Re: [Elecraft] Possible bad KREF or K144XV Ref Lock or ???
Hi Peter, I'll try to play with the crystal (inside the K144XV, right?) In fact, I have, probably, have missed the Elecraft recommendations. Just got RIGOL DSA815-TG 1.5 GHz Spectrum Analyzer so will be able to see the LO specrtum purity. Will let VHF folks know the results. Regarding the MMIC, I was just referring to LO level difference at the mixer LO port. Will check the relays info. Thank you so much for your help and ideas! 73 Vic On Mon, 5/5/14, Peter Torry peter.to...@talktalk.net wrote: Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Possible bad KREF or K144XV Ref Lock or ??? To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Monday, May 5, 2014, 8:49 PM Hi Victor, Thanks for the update - most interesting. I am using the K144XV in conjunction with the REFLock and found that the crystal and its grounding was the problem. May I suggest that you experiment with earthing the crystal can as suggested by Elecraft and / or changing out the crystal. As far as small RF relays are concerned I use the Teledyne TO5 can type 732 that will fit easily in the enclosure and have reasonable isolation across the contacts. I have not found any problems using MMICs and will continue to use them. In fact I use a PGA103 in my masthead preamp without a problem. Hope the above is of some help. 73 Peter G3SMT On 04/05/2014 09:28, Vic Goncharsky via Elecraft wrote: Hi Harry, Hope the info that follows will be useful. I have made some research of how to make the internal K144XV Elecraft transverter be useful in contests. Originally it was almost useless due to many parasitics all across the band even from S9 signals. The stronger – the worse and there were a lot of them even here in KN29AU. So in July, last year, during IARU R1 3-rd subregional VHF contest, the band was full of clones. HI HI. Comparying the schematics of both internal and external Elecraft 144 transverters shows three major differences that could have caused the different dynamic performance of the internal one. Firstly - the usage of three diode switching components in the Front-End chain up to the ADEX mixer. Secondly - usage of MMIC instead of BFR96 in the LO amplifier stage. Thirdly - the K144XV PHASE LOCK BOARD Here are some findings and possible solutions. 1.Remove (do NOT install) the K144XV PHASE LOCK BOARD! In this case transverter is using just its own Xtal generator and spirious signals caused, possibly, by leakage from the synthesizer are gone. 2. Bypass the input diode T/R input switch by using separate receiving path. Remove the shorting block from pin1-2 of the P3 connector and connect separate coax to pin2 – RF, pin3 – ground. This requires adding some front-end filtering and RF relays in PA, LNA or wherever you like. (I would have prefer to get rid of all diode switching in RX RF path but have no idea of RF relays small enough to fit into K144XV box). I have tested this setup in September during IARU R1 VHF championship and compared to July's event it looked like day and night. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to us...@yahoo.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Question about Data Modes...
Hello, I am still trying to get my head wrapped around the K3 for RTTY and-- lets say JT65. Here is the K3 setup: 1. Microphone to Mic input, radio set to look for Mic in SSB on MIC INPUT. 2. Computer to LINE IN, DATA MODE A set to look to LINE IN for sounds from the sound-card. 3. PTT being asserted via RS-232 for data modes, and using a foot switch for SSB. Old Pro 3 setup: When I had my Pro 3, I used the mic input for SSB, and data, using a Rigblaster to mix inputs when needed. I avoided the data inputs because they also offset tuning on the Pro 3, and I was not running FSK, so I always just used USB for all sound card modes, and did not have to switch , or rewire anything to change any modes. I would like that or as close to that as I can get on the K3 New K3 Setup: Now under the K3, and no Rigblaster, I have JT65 (WSJTx), running perfectly... Rig control, decodes, makes contacts, etc... I am using DATA MODE A, and LINE IN for audio. Works like a champ! However when I go to RTTY using MixW software on the same computer, leaving the K3 in DATA MODE A, I get the oddest behavior... I can not decode RTTY no matter how I try and/or how I tune it. I have the waterfall on the computer software showing that I am tuned correctly, levels are good, but it fails to decide RTTY. If I force a sideband switch on the radio and re-tune it still does not decode RTTY, if I force a sideband switch in the software and re-tune it still fails to decode RTTY. In tuning, to center a signal in the passband, the markers for the signal in the computer waterfall the opposite direction from what I would expect. I have the same function running under CW, using the same tuning method and the radio tunes as expected. There is something special about DATA MODE A I am missing. HOWEVER... If I switch the radio to USB, all decodes fine. However I can not transmit RTTY because I am in USB mode, and as such the radio is expecting the computer RTTY tones to appear in the Mic input, where I have my microphone, I have the computer wired to the LINE IN. I really want to be able to run RTTY in DATA MODE A because I don't want to change mic inputs every time I switch modes between JT65 and RTTY. Is my assumption that AFSK A can not look at LINE IN correct? So here are the questions: 1. If you are running RTTY and any JT65 are you always in DATA A mode, or do you change between data modes if you switch from JT65 top RTTY? a. If you change to RTTY which mode for the radio, if JT65, which mode for the radio? 2. Any idea why I can not decode RTTY in DATA A mode? a. I believe it is something to do with my not getting the sideband settings right in MixW, or on the K3. 3. What exactly is the difference between DATA MODE A, AFSK A mode, and SSB? 4. Are all sound card modes supposed to use the same DATA Mode, either DATA A or AFSK A? a. If so, why? b. If not, why? I have Cady's book, but for some reason, (I suspect frustration, and a preconceived idea of how I think it should work), I am unable to unwind this problem. I see the Cady's book says to use AFSK A for RTTY, and it says use DATA MODE A for PSK, and I assume JT65, etc. Why? This relates to question 3 above... Can I assign LINE IN as the sound input for both DATA MODE A, and AFSK A? I believe I may be constraining the problem too much to solve it here... So in short here is my goal: I want to be able to just switch to DATA on the K3 and have it work for all sound card modes, with no rewiring, or changing of the configurations. Is this possible? Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to be as clear as possible in this. -- Thanks and 73's, For equipment, and software setups and reviews see: www.nk7z.net for MixW support see; http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/mixw/info for Dopplergram information see: http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/dopplergram/info for MM-SSTV see: http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MM-SSTV/info __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 With SDR-IQ
While the P3 fits in nicely with the rest of the Elecraft gear, you can’t compare it to the SDR-IQ. With the SDR-IQ you can use your mouse to click on a signal, and you can listen on a different frequency on the same band (within the 192 KHz range). You can also select from the many different software applications with options such as recording, etc. It can also be used standalone as an excellent HF receiver. 73 de Sebastian, W4AS On May 06, 2014, at 11:39 AM, Fred Smith m...@totalhighspeed.com wrote: I had problems frequently with the one I had when I tried it on one of my K3's, spent more time fooling with it than using. Re: [Elecraft] Question about Data Modes...
AFSK A mode is not only LSB, but the K3 displays the mark frequency. That works quite well for those who are using MMTTY. It may be that frequency display difference that is causing MixW to 'misbehave' - just a guess, I do not know much about MixW behavior. You can use DATA A mode for RTTY, but you will likely have to tell MixW to send in RTTY reverse. Universal Radio has the plug, the part number is 2112. ( I think the manufacturers part number it P-T700 ) . They are $3.99 each. I believe it to be the standard 8-pin Foster connector used by most radio manufacturers. Radio Shack advertises their model number 274-025 for $4.49. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062445 If you have a local store, you might avoid shipping charges. Otherwise many of the mail order stores have them. Maybe free shipping. [Elecraft] KX3 and Re: K2 Keying on SSB
May I again make my plea to upgrade the KX3 firmware to provide the normal CW vox delay when using CW in SSB? Still not there in Ver 1.87. [Elecraft] [K2] SWR meter reads 'funny' on just 20 meters
Don (and list) I just replaced my 'back up shack' antenna today (it was a 45/90 OCF experiment) with a 138' open wire fed doublet. The center is up 50' and the elements are more-or-less installed. They will get more installed later. I used the 'Ladder-Snap' pieces to make the feedline. In 35 years of being licensed and active, I have never had an open wire fed antenna. They look cool, kinda retro, sort of old (like me, I am 53 today), a real classic. Anyway, I fired up the old K2 and hooded it up to the new aerial. The K2 (the same one since 1999) has the KAT2 installed, which works well, but the ATU portion isn't in line for this setup. Instead, I have a DC-phantom-powered SGC-239 out at the feedpoint. Inside, I have an A-B switch that can steer the rig's output to a lab grade 50 ohm load. On all bands but 20 meters, the outside tuner quickly found a 'solution' for the new doublet, none worse a match that 1.5:1. Nice. However, on 20, the K2 said it was 3.0:1 ... Hmm.. I flipped to the dummy load. All bands show 1:1 on the K2 display except for 20, where it reads 1.8:1 ... into 50 ohms. I switched the K2 display to read FWD REV, instead of SWR, and then the display showed 5.7W fwd and 0.7W reverse into the dummy load. So, what do you think the problem might be? Thanks in advance for the opinion. Hope you're enjoying the terrific weather. Not an Elecraft ATU? Re: [Elecraft] K3 With SDR-IQ
I'm using LP-Pan2, NaP3, and an M-Audio Delta card in my Win7 computer with the signal from the K3 IF out. I use microHAM Device Router [comes with my CW keyer] for linking the K3, NaP3, and N1MM [for contesting]. This package runs flawlessly for both general operating and contesting. I did not get a P3 for space reasons; don't know what it can and cannot do. Others will no doubt fill in this gap. The above combination is very versatile in my operating environment, and at this point I can't imagine operating without it. In a contest, it's a game changer IMHO. The pan display is on the same monitor as all other operating related programs, and this has not presented any problems, even in contest conditions. I gather that the P3 is a turnkey approach and works right out of the box. That's an advantage. Assembling the various components for a unique pan installation is a bit tricky, no doubt; it was for me. This occurs because each component has its own setup parameters, and getting all the parameters from various elements to work together does take some time and help. Once its properly organized/setup it's transparent, or at least it is here. ...robert -- Robert G Strickland, PhD ABPH - KE2WY rc...@verizon.net.usa Syracuse, New York, USA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] [K2] SWR meter reads 'funny' on just 20 meters
Well, I see how his dipole might be presenting an extreme value of impedance on 20, depending on the length and impedance of the line. But why is his dummy load weird only on 20M? If for some reason you want to listen to the SDR output via your computer, you can do that too, using the PSDR filters and other features -- although the K3 is way better. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] SWR meter reads 'funny' on just 20 meters
It sounds like something may be amiss in the K2 for 20m; not sure how or what. But it may be the SGC is getting to 1.5:1 on 20 also -- since the K2 seems to be reading 1.8:1 for a dummy load which is 1.0:1 we can assume. Do you have another rig you can test this with -- or maybe a meter you can place at the output of the K2 as a redundant measure of SWR or forward and reflected power? Re: [Elecraft] [K2] SWR meter reads 'funny' on just 20 meters
Steve, Yes, the weather has been great here in the Triangle area. Generally OCF dipoles can generate a lot of common mode RF and bring it into the shack unless measures are taken to kill that aspect. However, your results on 20 meters with the dummy load do deserve a lot of careful consideration. First a statement that the KAT2 is not band dependent when in CAL P or CAL S ATU menu state. The response of the KAT2 diodes may vary a bit with frequency, but not to the extent you have stated, and certainly not on any one band. You say the KAT2 is not in line. The menu ATU settings that take the KAT2 off line are CAL n, CAL P and CAL S. If you were using CAL P, the L and C solution for 20 meters was still present, but the display during a TUNE would show the power output with that tuning solution present. I would suggest that you continue to test into the dummy load, and set the KAT2 to Auto, then do a TUNE on 20 meters to see if anything changes. If things remain the same, I would suspect that there is a relay in the KAT2 that is not working properly and leaving some residual L or C in the circuit. Normally, that would affect all bands, but there is an off chance that it would only be noticed on one band. The relays for the capacitors are relatively easy to check - go to CAL P or CAL S in the ATU menu and then check the resistance to ground for both legs of the capacitor - all should measure infinite resistance. Checking the inductors is not as easy (unless you measure the inductance from input to output of the KAT2 with an inductance meter). The normal procedure is to lift one end of each of the inductors and make certain that there is still continuity from the input center conductor to the output center conductor. If that continuity test fails, find the relay that is open and once found determine why it is not operating to short out the inductor. OK, so much for that kind of theory stuff. Let's simplify a bit. If you have excessive L or C in the KAT2, the wattmeter bridge will not balance. So the first quick check is to set the ATU menu to CAL n and check the wattmeter for a good null on C55. If you do achieve a good null, then do the CAL P and CAL S calibration and check the SWR indication on all bands again. If you cannot achieve a good null, it could be that something has changed in the wattmeter section, or (as above) it could be a stuck relay). To check whether it is a wattmeter problem or an L/C or relay problem, set to ANT1, and then separate the KAT2 LC board from the Control Board, then put a long jumper between J4 pin 2 and J5 pin 15 (one pin in from the ends of those two headers). Again try the null procedure and the calibration. If all is OK with that test, the problem is on the L/C board, but if you still cannot achieve a good null, blame the wattmeter components. Should it be the wattmeter at fault, any of the components C54, C55, R3, R4, D1 and D2 are suspect. First check the diodes with an ohmmeter preferably set for diode test. If OK, proceed to the capacitors - replacement is most certain test because they may behave differently at RF than at the low test frequency used in a capacitance meter like the AADE. For the resistors, check the soldering first. If you have to measure the values, lift one end to make the measurement. Good luck with it. Lastly Steve, if you are using your garage mounted high power dummy load, I suggest that you use another dummy load at the workbench (or shack) with a short length of coax as a check. There is a possibility that the particular length of coax has somehow changed characteristics (maybe loose connectors) and is causing problems on 20 meters due to its length. That exhausts all my current suggestions. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/6/2014 9:21 PM, inventor61 . wrote: Don (and list) I just replaced my 'back up shack' antenna today (it was a 45/90 OCF experiment) with a 138' open wire fed doublet. Good answers all, but it's the part in the subscription page that isn't really working. I think if that were implemented, then I could simply subscribe to the KX3 thread and be done with it. Re: [Elecraft] Limit topics in email
There are times when I wish the Elecraft list was by model (and not just one big list) and then there are times when I learn things that apply to my KX3 that would never have been posted to a KX3 list. ... and that reminded me of a tool I used to use called POPFile. While I used it for spam filtering (it's a Bayesian filter so it learns to classify mail by example), I'm using similar Bayesian algorithms built-in to Thunderbird for anti-spam. What POPFile does that's somewhat unique is that it will classify on really any criteria, not just good/bad (non-spam vs. spam). It could be applied to this list to sort it by interest area (portable, antenna, contesting, firmware, etc.) and with a little training (a few days) give someone exactly what they'd want. You'd find it at http://getpopfile.org. As for implemented/unimplemented features, the list is operated by QTH.net. They run a whole stack of amateur radio related lists using Mailman, which is free software. It works reasonably well, but I don't think QTH.net makes a lot of money on list management, and probably isn't too motivated to fix issues. There is the KX3 Yahoo group, but the signal/noise ratio is really kind of awful, IMHO. 73 -- Lynn On 5/6/2014 9:39 PM, HREFAB wrote: Good answers all, but it's the part in the subscription page that isn't really working.
