[Elecraft] K2 and KNB2

2014-06-14 Thread John Oppenheimer
I've built my K2/10 almost three years ago. My quest was to enable all
of the front panel buttons. I finally achieved my goal yesterday with
the completion of the KNB2. The KNB2 works as advertised!

A thank you to Elecraft for keeping the K2 on your order page.
http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm#k2

For all of you that missed out during the K2 days and need/want to build
a full solder kit, it's available, fun to build, and a joy to use. The
K2 is rather capable and has an impressive position in the Sherwood
Engineering Receiver Test Data page http://www.sherweng.com/table.html
(The K1 and KX1 full solder kits are also available)

2014-06-14 Thread Dick Dievendorff
CONFIG:PTT is not required for the K3 Utility's keying, it uses the serial
port and the KY command.

If touching a paddle keys the K3, so should the K3 Utility's Terminal page.

Is your K3 in mode CW? VOX on?

[Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

2014-06-14 Thread Mike Hagele AC6JA via Elecraft
I am using a K3 and KPA500 with the KAT500.
I also have the KAT500 mode set to MAN.
I thought that the firmware was supposed to switch the tuner automatically
when you switch bands?
After I go to a new band, I need to tap my key momentarily to get the
tuner to tune to the new frequency.
Is this normal?
Let me know as I thought the tuner would remember the presets when QSY'ing
to a new frequency?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

2014-06-14 Thread Mike Hagele AC6JA via Elecraft
I am using the most current firmware versions in the K3, KAT500, and
KPA500.
I am also using the Elecraft auxilliary cables.
Not sure what else to check as to why the KAT500 won't update the tuner
preselects when QSY'ing?

Mike,
Not normal! The KAT should QSY if the KAT500 is interfaced with the K3
KPA500 as per the manual. It is trule a K=Line system!

First - make sure you have the most current version of firmware. There
have
been a few updates that fixed issues that you describe. I have Beta 1.63
in
my KAT500.

You need the K3, KAT, KPA all tied together as per the KAT manual. I may
not have the same manual as you do but it is the section interfacing K3
KPA with DB15 cables.
Make sure that the antenna selection for each band is correct using the
KAT500 Utility.
Set the tune power in the K3 - I use 20 watts; because I had an early KAT
and that was what it needed. Not sure if it affects the KAT but I have my
K3
power set to per band for the KPA.

Then you need to train (tune) the KAT on the band segments that you will
be
QSYing to. The bands have different segment sizes so check the manual. I
tune with the KAT in Auto mode. Press the KAT Tune button then hold the K3
Tune button. This should initiate the tune function in the KAT500.
I Trained my KAT on all bands that I use. I incremented the frequency
from
the bottom of the voice frequencies to the top frequencies. This did take
a
while but now I can QSY and a second or so after I stop turning the VFO
dial
I hear the relays in the KAT set. This means that the tuner is optimized
when I transmit. BTW - I do run my tuner in MAN (manual) mode so it does
not
try to retune on voice modulation.

Above is how I operate my KAT. I have an early Kit that has had several
firmware updates. A couple were for the issue you seem to have.
Mine works well for me with several antennas.

Hope this might help you. If not others may have an idea of Elecraft will
surly help on Monday.

Hmmm ... I have the control cables ... K3--KAT500/KAT500--KPA500,
I've trained my KAT500 for all 3 antennas on all the bands that each of

I'm hardly an expert on the insides of Elecraft firmware, and I suppose
it could be recalling on very first sign of RF and doing so very quickly
so that I don't notice it, but I really don't think so.

I do notice when changing bands that the K3 power control sometimes
takes a dit or two to settle to the correct drive power ... often that
first dit will blink the 600 [occasionally 700] watt LED.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

2014-06-14 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Mike,
Does the KPA500 follow the band switching and display the correct band on its
LCD? That would mean that the band data is getting through the cables. The
KAT500 uses the AUXBUX (pin 2 in the 15-pin cable) to get the frequency
information in addition to the band data pins. You might check your K3-KAT
cable to see if that pin is OK.

You might try going through all the KAT500 configuration screens to see if
something looks amiss and then open the Operate screen. (In the KAT500
Utility). That screen is VERY useful to help you figure out what is going on.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

Mike,

Are you using *anything* in addition to the basic cables between the
K-line units?
If so, try removing all the extras (includes the Keyline interrupter and
the RCA keying cables if used), and then see if it works as expected.
If it does, then begin putting the other things back in place to
determine which part is causing the failure.

Have you verified that this automatic feature is enabled in your K3?

Here is what you need to do on the K3:

  - Locate the K3's CONFIG:KAT3 menu entry,
  - Tap '1' until you see KAT500Y. (The other selection is KAT500N, the

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

2014-06-14 Thread Fred Jensen
Well, someone who actually knows about this needs to weigh in. I recall
a list thread about this and changes being made in the latest firmware
to accommodate those who wanted the KAT500 to follow the current
frequency of the K3, without making any RF. Apparently there was a
downside ... KAT500 clicked some while tuning, which I guess annoyed
some. I'm beyond half-deaf and I run my radios with headphones all the
time so I don't hear anything from the KAT500 [or fans in the KPA500].
Elecraft Standard Practice in these situations seems to be, Add a
K3/KAT500 menu option to turn whatever on/off. Possibly that might be
the answer here

Not going to put money on it, but my guess is ... that's what they've done.

[Elecraft] K2 panadapter setup - report

2014-06-14 Thread Robert G Strickland
Just finished installing the Clifton Labs IF out board in the K2 and
outfitting my trusty ThinkPad [quite old] with miscroHam Router, LP-Pan2
and NaP3 for panadapter display. Some effort getting the ThinkPad to run
everything, but once over that hurdle, the pan display is very good.
Running N1MM beneath the pan display fills the laptop screen and give a
nice portable, Field Day, setup. Anyone wishing more details can contact
me here or off-list. One moral IMHO: never sell a K2 :-). Thanks Elecraft.

[Elecraft] KXPA100 issue

2014-06-14 Thread WA7SPY
My KXPA100 has been working great since I purchased and assembled it about 4
months ago with my KX3. The KXPA 100 has been putting out 100 watts or so on
all the bands. I am using a Carolina Windom antenna by Radio Works which also
has been working great!

Last night all of a sudden my output from the KXPA100 is half of what it should
be. I can only get 50 - 60 watts output. I connected my KXPA100 to two
different dummy loads. One a Bird 100 watt 50 ohm dummy load and the other a
MFJ 300 watt 50 Ohm dummy load. I can only get 50 watts or so output with 110
watts selected on my KX3 into either dummy loads using a Daiwa CN-101L SWR watt
meter with eitehr ANT 1 or Ant 2. Yes I have tried several different coax
jumper cables with the same result. I have the 100 watt antenna tuner installed
into the KXPA100. The LED's on the KXPA100 indicate the same 50 watt output.
Yes my voltage to the KXPA100 is good 13.8 volts with a very short run from my
Alinco DM-330MV power supply with only less than 1/2 a volt drop to the KXPA100.

I did a reload of the firmware to both the KX3 and KXPA100 with versions KX3
0.194 and KXPA100 0.132. I did get the following message from the KX3:
Loaded MCU revision 0.194.KX3 responded with version 99.99.

I will be calling Elecraft Support on Tuesday morning which is one of my days
off from work. Any suggestions in the mean time?

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 issue

2014-06-14 Thread Matt VK2RQ
What about the power for the KX3? If the voltage to the KX3 is insufficient, or
has failed completely and you are running off internal batteries, then you may
not be able to develop full power out. Check also the attenuator setting on the
back of the KXPA100.

After eliminating the obvious simple cases, contacting Elecraft support is a
good move, so they can help determine if it may be something more serious (like
a failed final transistor).

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2014-06-14 Thread Kevin

Good Evening,
The weather has cooled off and gotten wetter. The rainy season is
far from over. Lots of wind knocked down the new grass and the old
needles were falling like rain. I have to sweep the roof at least once
a year or else the ferns start to grow. But the fir trees are enjoying
it showing a lot of new growth.

With the active sun propagation has been either marginal or not at
all. There is a CME due to arrive soon (maybe) which will increase the
normal, spring QRN. Forty meters has become harder to use. If I moved
the second net later it would work but I can't fit it into my schedule
nor can people stay up late on Sunday night.

Please join us tomorrow.

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday (3 PM PDT Sunday)
7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (6 PM PDT Sunday)

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

2014-06-14 Thread Dick Dievendorff
If the ACC cable is working as expected, the KAT500 and KPA500 will both
bandswitch using the 4 band data lines from the K3. The KAT500 utility operate
page shows the band the KAT500 is on and it should change as you change K3
bands. In addition, relatively new K3 and KAT500 firmware can work together to
bandswitch and select ATU memories as the K3 is tuned across the band. This
uses the AUXBUS, one of the wires in that 15-pin ACC cable. From your
description, it sounds like the band line mechanism may not be working. I'd
try checking the cables and look for additional devices that may be loading the
band lines. Some, including me, have found that swapping the cables can help.
There aren't KAT500 configuration options to choose band line band switching.
It's always on. There is a K3 menu option to choose the AUXBUS mechanism,
described in K3 firmware release notes.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

2014-06-14 Thread Phil Hystad

 Phil,

 Who reads release notes? :-)

Actually, I always read the release notes, you learn things that often are
never written up anywhere else. Or, as in this case, when release notes also
double as documentation for a new function -- sort of a mini pre-release of
formal documentation to be updated.

I also always read the Preface of books, all books. On some technical books, I
peruse the index because often times there are little jewels of information
hidden away in the index. An index is not just a list of words referenced in
the book -- it contains nifty cross-references and often times other terms that
of related information.

And, when I read technical books (usually Physics and Math) I study the
background of the author. Sometimes, if Physics, I am reading some of their
published papers (I am a member of APS primarily to gain access to physics
research papers).

Yes, I do read release notes and many times I even print them out and include
in my notebook collection of things about the Elecraft rigs.

P.S. I usually do not read the actual user documentation before trying out
things though. I need to get better at that.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 operation?

2014-06-14 Thread Rick Bates, WA6NHC
If the commentary announcing new firmware suggests a new mode, feature or
setting, I'll read the release notes. Most updates are tweaks, not new items,
but I'm grateful for all of them.

I generally try to NOT read the user documentation (for the first day or so)
and will see how far I can get by poking around the program or device. That is
one of my personal 'tests' on the user interface, which should make complex
things, simple to the user.

However, in the case of the K line, eventually reading the documentation pays
off because of the sheer complexity and number of choices available for
personal preferences. Elecraft still manages to keep things simple, bravo!

Rick, WA6NHC

iPad = small keypad = typos = sorry ;-)
