Thanks for the pointer, Fred. With the book open to p.165, plus a couple of
other menu adventures, I was able to get the K3 working like it should. Don’t
know how the settings were scrambled - something of a mystery.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - AFSK

2016-11-13 Thread Richard Ferch
If the K3 is sending a steady carrier, by far the most likely explanation
is that it is in FSK D instead of AFSK A.

The data sub-mode is remembered per-band, so perhaps it is not set
correctly on all bands.

Another cause can be a logging program - for example, if you are using
MMTTY from within N1MM+, you have to make sure that the Mode control
setting for the mode sent to the radio is AFSK, not RTTY. RTTY in the mode
control selector in N1MM+ means FSK, and it will cause the radio to be put
into FSK D every time a QSY is commanded from N1MM+. A similar phenomenon
can occur with other logging or digital mode programs.

Is there some way you are getting rf back into the rig just in 15m?

Does it do this on a dummy load?

Have you taken the K3 completely out of line, no computer, no amp, no

Re: [Elecraft] K2 VFO question

2016-11-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hi Terry:

No, the knob should spin freely unless it is hard against the felt. I and a
lot of other K2 builders a decade ago ran into this issue. What has most
likely happened is that one of the threads around the inside opening of the
felt washer has gotten caught in the shaft and wound itself into the
bearing, causing it to bind.

On mine, after removing the knob and washer, I was able to see the thread
sticking out around the C retainer on the encoder shaft. I grabbed it with
tweezers and, by turning the encoder shaft the correct direction, it slowly
unwound and came back out. After that the shaft turned very freely.

You have a few choices:

I used a little CA (super glue) cement around the inner hole opening in the
felt washer and, after it hardened, trimmed off any loose threads remaining.

Others had luck just opening up the hole in the felt washer.

And a few replaced the felt washer with one they made out of a scrap bit of
leather from an old belt, etc.

The K2 is a superb CW rig and does a decent job on SSB.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 No LCD display

2016-11-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Robert,

Is this a new K2 that uses the new VFO encoder mounted on a board?
If so, the most likely problem is that the encoder board is contacting
the back of the Control Board.

Flush cut *all* the leads on the encoder board - really flush with the
board.
Then also flush cut the leads on the Control Board that might contact
the encoder board.

Put some electrical tape over the encoder board and see if it works.
In extreme cases, a better insulator such as fish paper or some other
plastic insulator may be required on the encoder board.

You can gain extra space between the encoder board and the Control Board
by placing the lockwashers for the Front Panel standoffs between the
rear of the Front Panel Board and the standoffs instead of behind the
screwheads.

Make certain the pads between the top rear of the Front panel board and
the 2D connectors are properly in place.

[Elecraft] K2 No LCD display

2016-11-13 Thread Robert Forster
Hello all,

I finally made it to the first power up of my K2 and seem to have hit a
snag.
The radio powers up, The relays click and the backlight of the LCD comes on
but no text. After searching the list it seems that pin 1 of the driver is
a likely suspect. I took a look at it with a USB microscope and it looks
like the solder joint there is fine. I posted a picture of it here:
https://flic.kr/p/P3Esg4

Here are the steps I've taken so far:

I reflowed a few of the pins that looked suspect going from the LCD to the
driver IC

Checked the values of R15 and 16 they both test as the correct values

I show fluctuating voltage on pins 16 and 17 indicating data is present

Pulled the Driver IC and tested continuity from pins 1 and 2 to the rf
board connector pins 16 and 17

Further tested continuity from lcd controller pins 1 and 2 all the way back
to pins 38 and 39 on the MCU

Confirmed proper voltage to the MCU (5V) and I do hear the oscillator @ 4Mhz

Confirmed I am getting 5v at the voltage regulator on the control board and
that is making it to the front panel board

I'm not sure what else to test now. One thing that is mentioned in the
troubleshooting is if the bargraph is also not working to check the 5V
line. Should the bargraph be lit at all during power up? Maybe that's a
clue? I would like make sure I'm getting the 2V? to the LCD driver but
when everything is assembled I cant get at that pin.

Thanks for any and all help!
Robert

Re: [Elecraft] Magnetic Loop Antenna Question

2016-11-13 Thread Ignacy
Magnetic loop is interesting when running 100W without a tuner. I had lots of
interesting contacts on 20-10 with the loop 8 ft up and an air split-stator
capacitor. Altogether the loop weighted some 2 kg and was pretty large.
Such a loop for 40m would be inefficient.

When your KX3 weighs < 1 kg and has ATU, end fed is likely to be as
efficient and much lighter. Also it can cover many bands without extra
tuning.

I made my mag loop over 20 years ago and made many contacts. Since I bought
ATU, the loop was not in use. I tried to compare it to along wire, and the
wire was stronger and lighter. The loop may have a purpose in
quasi-stationary situation especially if there is RFI since the loop can be
rotated to minimize RFI.

There is a picture of my two-turn mag loop for 40-80m on my QRZ .com
page. I wrote an article for antenneX several years ago describing this
antenna, but it is behind the "pay wall" so I can't post it anywhere else.

The main loop is about 4.5 feet in diameter formed by using the shield
of 7/8-inch Heliax. The loop is remotely tuned over the coax by a DC
motor-driven vacuum variable capacitor. The antenna can handle between
500 watts and 1KW depending on frequency if the VVC is stout enough
(15kV at 60 amps). The driver loop is about 1/5 the diameter of the main
loop diameter.

[Elecraft] KPA500 power output starts out low, then goes up

2016-11-13 Thread Barthold Lichtenbelt via Elecraft
Hi All,

Maybe you can help with something that is baffling me. My KPA500 doesn't go
to full output until I have spoken my callsign (when trying to get through a
pileup) a few times. It starts off with 100 or so watts, and after a few
iterations rises to the full 500W output. I see this both on the KPA500 LED
bar, as well as on the P3 PEP output monitored by P3TXMON. My full setup is
K3S+KPA500+KAT500+P3+P3TXMON. All devices run the latest released firmware.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Barthold

Re: [Elecraft] Magnetic Loop Antenna Question

2016-11-13 Thread Fred Jensen
I've built several of those ... most before I understood how they worked
... or didn't. [:-) The #1 requirement, if you are building an antenna
and not a dummy load, is resonance. Since most loops are used fairly
close to the TX with short transmission lines, SWR doesn't matter much,
except to keep the TX happy.

It the loop is resonant, you can match the impedance at the input end of
the line with a tuner if you have to. But, the problem is folks new to
mag loops tend to get the loop close to resonance [usually because the
exact point tends to be fairly sharp on the capacitor rotation], and
then "let the ATU do the rest."

Loops will get you attention, sometimes more than you want:

A couple years ago, I set up for the FOBB at a local park on top of a
little knoll with my Alexloop. I sit under mine and can reach up to
tune it easily. Several people inquired what I was doing. Finally, one
older guy who had been walking past me several times at a bit of a
distance finally came up and said, "You're the CIA and you're spying on
me aren't you?"

The darn thing worked incredibly well! It was for 40 meters. Here's
the

"starter article" at http://www.antennex.com/hws/ws0902/hardline.html

This inspired me to build a square loop made of two inch copper pipe
with a vacuum variable and a 1 rpm 12VDC motor which I switched by
reversing polarity. It was for 20 meters and worked great with QRP.

I finally bought an Alexloop for true portable work.

Even though band conditions are rather poor these days, you can still
do good things with a mag loop--especially on 20 meters. You may not
be able to run that amp through it, unless you get a pretty husky
capacitor, but 15 watts is not usually a problem. You just might be

Re: [Elecraft] Fldigi Mac no TX Audio

2016-11-13 Thread a45wg
The Solution has been found.

Firstly, I checked that Fldigi was not misbehaving on my Mac.

Installed on a spare development Mac, and with no radio connected at all -
pressed CQ, I audibly verified that I could hear the audio comping out of the
Mac’s speakers… It was very nice sounding. (I double checked this with the USB
Codec using the excellent Audio Jack from
Rogue Ameoba - excellent - and again I could hear sound card generated output).

So Mac Ok (IMHO) lets check the K3-S….

1 Usb Cable plugged in - no audio in or out leads (there were this morning !!
thanks Don). Plus I have my Bencher plugged in - which seems to be rather
laughing at me.

K3-S settings
Data Mode-A
MIC SEL Line-In
LIN OUT - Nor 10(I can see this effects the Decode signal
strength on the Mac so this must be correct also)
PTT-KEY OFF-OFF

Scanning the Elecraft archives for the umpteenth time - I found a similar issue
(Thank you Brian — K1LI)

I seemed to need to adjust something called the mic button - Huh … I almost
never use Voice - so I had to read the manual (again) and after a suitable
tweak - it all worked.

Apologies - Apple, Fldigi software developers - nice work Elecraft - Digital
with 1 cable … awesome

regards

Tim - A45WG

Fred, can you specify the macro for setting two different options of AGC, for
example:

a) thr 10 - slp 5
B) thr 6 - slp 12

I would like to set them both on PF2 and on different macros on K-Pod.

I have seen examples on your K3S book that I own and on ham web pages. I have
programmed split+2 on and off on PF1, and on K-Pod, pwr 100 and pwr 65 (for
driving amp), but dont understand how to set these values for AGC in a macro.

Thanks

We have seen some great macro ideas where a single function key is used to
toggle between two different K3 states, e.g. in and out of split, toggling
between two AGC THR settings, etc. Unfortunately, this idea cannot be used
(directly) with a KPod button.
Each of the the 16 KPod buttons are dedicated to a single macro and cannot be
changed like the function key assignments can.

However, I just twigged onto the thought that you can assign a third macro to
be activated by a KPod key that then toggles the macro sequence. For example,
if you use a hold of PF2 to toggle in and out of split, that uses Macro 7 and
Macro 8 (say) you can
assign SWH47; to Macro 9 and then tap the KPod F1 key to run Macro 7 and then
Macro 8 in sequence.

Don't why I didn't think of it before or if I missed it when somebody else
mentioned it.

have a good weekend all.

[Elecraft] Audio Drop ... looking for additional suggestions?

2016-11-13 Thread Nolan Kienitz
I have an occasional audio drop on my K3 when closing my logging program -
Log4OM. The problem is an annoyance more than anything, but is still
frustrating. There is also another OM who is experiencing the same audio drop
as I do with his K3S. The audio drop can easily be reversed by simply tapping
the XFIL key or by only slightly moving the shift or width knobs. By doing that
the audio pops right back up. I can also reload the Log4OM application and
click on a cluster spot (maybe even same station) and the audio will pop back
up.

I have spent extensive effort with the programmers of Log4OM and the developer
of the OmniRig application used to send the band, frequency commands between
Log4OM and the K3. I've captured many debugging files and trace files trying
to come up with item that may be causing the audio drop. So far to no avail.

I've worked extensively with Wayne and he has provided me with early Beta FW
versions in attempts to isolate the problem. He is tending to think it is
related to flash read errors, but we still have not hit on the key.

My K3 is s/n: 9013 and was assembled in May-2015. Since that time I've added
a number of upgrades and one included the KIO3B interface. I installed the
KIO3B option in June-2016.

I have been able to isolate the audio drop to a change in the K3 Firmware. The
audio drops started to appear with FW V5.50 that I installed in July-2016.
I've tried other FW Beta releases and am currently using FW V5.56.

Sometimes the audio drop won't occur for a day or two and other times it
happens each and every time I close the Log4OM application. Doesn't seem to
matter if I'm using the USB or serial I/O for communications.

What does help isolate the problem is that when I revert back to FW V5.38 the
audio drop just does not occur at all when closing the Log4OM application.

Certainly seems to be some weird anomaly in the FW and maybe there is a timing
issue with commands coming out of Log4OM and OmniRig, but just have not been
able to ID it yet.

As I've noted Wayne has been working hard to help out, but we're still both a
tad stumped. I'm just tossing this out looking for some out of the box
thoughts for something I'm completely missing in trying to trouble-shoot.
Again, this is not a huge problem rather just an annoyance, but it still bugs
the heck out of me.

Re: [Elecraft] Magnetic Loop Antenna Question

2016-11-13 Thread stan levandowski
My first loop was because of an article I read online that said, "Look
no further! Here is all you need: 10 feet 3 inches of 3/4-inch hard
line, 2 hose clamps, a chassis connector, a little bit of house wire,
and you could be in business as shown in the photo below"

The darn thing worked incredibly well!  It was for 40 meters. Here's the
"starter article" at http://www.antennex.com/hws/ws0902/hardline.html

This inspired me to build a square loop made of two inch copper pipe
with a vacuum variable and a 1 rpm 12VDC motor which I switched by
reversing polarity.  It was for 20 meters and worked great with QRP.

I finally bought an Alexloop for true portable work.

Terry,

If you have the inclination at all, why not build one! It's really
not all that hard to do. Quite a few years ago I did that, and the
thing worked pretty well. I got the info from a QST article from back
in the 90's. The hardest part might be finding a proper capacitor for
tuning, but if your junk box has much in it, you may have that problem
solved. I complicated things a bit by adding a small low voltage
motor to turn the capacitor. You need to use one that has a very low
rpm rate for that, but they are available. Not counting the motor,
the whole thing cost lest than $10 to build. I used copper tubing,
but you could use coax shield. I recommend copper tubing.

Even though band conditions are rather poor these days, you can still
do good things with a mag loop--especially on 20 meters. You may not
be able to run that amp through it, unless you get a pretty husky
capacitor, but 15 watts is not usually a problem. You just might be
surprised at what you can do with one of these things. They are fun
to play with.

In the K3S menus, Have you verified the selection for Mic Select : rear mic,
front mic, or line in? Having it set to the wrong input could make same
symptoms you experience. Don't ask how I know :-)

[Elecraft] R: Macro sequencing

2016-11-13 Thread glcazz...@alice.it

Fred, can you specify the macro for setting two different options of AGC, for
example:
a) thr 10 - slp 5B) thr 6 - slp 12
I would like to set them both on PF2 and on different macros on K-Pod.
I have seen examples on your K3S book that I own and on ham web pages. I have
programmed split+2 on and off on PF1, and on K-Pod, pwr 100 and pwr 65 (for
driving amp), but dont understand how to set these values for AGC in a macro.
ThanksIan IK4EWX

Ogg: [Elecraft] Macro sequencing

We have seen some great macro ideas where a single function key is used to
toggle between two different K3 states, e.g. in and out of split, toggling
between two AGC THR settings, etc. Unfortunately, this idea cannot be used
(directly) with a KPod button. Each of the the 16 KPod buttons are dedicated
to a single macro and cannot be changed like the function key assignments can.

However, I just twigged onto the thought that you can assign a third macro to
be activated by a KPod key that then toggles the macro sequence. For example,
if you use a hold of PF2 to toggle in and out of split, that uses Macro 7 and
Macro 8 (say) you can assign SWH47; to Macro 9 and then tap the KPod F1 key to
run Macro 7 and then Macro 8 in sequence.

Don't why I didn't think of it before or if I missed it when somebody else
mentioned it.

have a good weekend all.
