[Elecraft] KPA 1500 #106
Someone mentioned that new KPA 1500 owners were not posting to the list. KPA-1500 Serial 106 was received today, installed and on the air! Purchased 25-Aug-2017 12:54:30 PDT by phone. Yes, it is as awesome as we have been told. Thank you, Elecraft! One question-the status of the KPA 1500 is listed on the K3 screen as KPA 500. Is there a way to change that now, or will that be in another K3 firmware release? [Elecraft] KPA3 removal
Hi, I am about to start replacement of the LPA output devices. To do so I think I first need to remove the KPA3. Once done can I just operate the K3 at low power to prove the LPA? I don;t have the jumper block so would just leave the interface block in place. I'm assuming it does much the same thing at low power . Is there a procedure of any sort I can follow? What bias current should I set R18 and R19 for? Re: [Elecraft] Current Flow on Copper Strips - a Question
"When skin effect is present, the current is always redistributed over the conductor cross section in such a way as to make most of the current flow where it is encircled by the smallest number of flux lines. This general principle controls the distribution of current irrespective of the shape of the conductor involved. Thus, with a flat strip conductor (figure reference not shown) the current flows primarily along the edges, where it is surrounded by the smallest amount of flux, and the true or effective resistance will be high because most of the strip carries very little current. (A reference to the missing figure) makes clear that it is not the amount of conductor surface that determines the resistance to alternating current but rather the way in which the conductor material is arranged." Re: [Elecraft] K3 AR0 & AR1 commands not working
I’m assuming you do have a KXV3 installed? Make sure you’re not in BSET or VFO A/B REVerse when you send the command. Also try sending just “AR;” in the command tester and see if you get a response. If you don’t, then you must have older firmware without the command implemented. 73, Wayne N6KR > On Apr 26, 2018, at 6:29 PM, Rich - K1HTVwrote: > > I have been unsuccessful in being able to control the K3 "RX ANT" using > macros with either the AR1 (on) or AR0 (off) commands. [Elecraft] Second speaker just turns off K3S
My K3S has two receivers and is up to date on firmware. I have a pair of the Elecraft speakers on it. I haven’t found any particular pattern to when it does this, but every once in a while the second speaker just cuts out and when I look at the menu selection it says 1 SPKR. I change it back to 2 and it pops back on. I can be operating or sitting across the room and it might do it every other day or so. I do have the second receiver and often I’m listening with Diversity turned on. I can’t remember it ever doing it when i was listening to two frequencies on each receiver. [Elecraft] K3 AR0 & AR1 commands not working
I have been unsuccessful in being able to control the K3 "RX ANT" using macros with either the AR1 (on) or AR0 (off) commands. Manually tapping the 'RX ANT' button on the K3 will correctly toggle the K3 receiver between the MAIN and RX ANT (Beverage) antennas. Using the latest version of the K3 Utility I verified that the K3 has the latest version of firmware and that it responded to a number of commands, but it would NOT respond to either the 'AR0' or 'AR1' commands. The K3 is SN 3657 with sync and the KIO3 USB upgrades. Thinking that there may be an EEPROM corruption problem I did an EEINT factory reset. After changing the CONFIG 'RS232' setting back to 'USB' so the K3 Utility could communicate again with the K3, I reloaded the last backup of the configuration settings. I still could not get the AR0 or AR1 commands to switch the RX ANT on the K3. Any suggestions as to how to get the 'AR0' and 'AR1' commands to work so I can use them in a macro? [Elecraft] Odd problem
I have K3 s/n 3400 plus which I’ve owned since. I have come across an odd problem. Occasionally when tuning across any band, the display suddenly jumps from 14023 to a frequency in the 80-100 MHz area. The only way to fix it is to turn the radio off and then back on. Of course, it is an intermittent condition. Doesn’t happen all the time. Re: [Elecraft] CW AGC settings
I *always* have AGC on. To each his own. Don has an excellent and enlightening AGC dissertation at www.w3fpr.com which is worth reading. See "Noisy K3." You asked for settings, mine are: THR=10 SLP=14 PLS=nor HLD=0.1 DCY=nor Fast=120 Slow=20 I operate mainly CW although I do listen to SSB a little and do a little general coverage SWL listening. I run fast AGC on CW, usually slow on SSB. Your threshold setting will depend somewhat on your ambient noise level. Slope seems to be a personal preference. I like to hear a difference between signals of different strength. Before we moved, I was surrounded by electric fences [some mine] which always started arcing in the spring when the weeds grew up on the fence line. The noise blanker would take the pulses out, PLS=nor prevented them from activating the AGC. I think DCY is personal preference, nor seems to work best for my compromised hearing. Hope this helps ... and actually answers your questions? 73, Fred ["Skip"] K6DGW Sparks NV DM09dn Washoe County On 4/26/2018 12:01 PM, Bill Stravinsky via Elecraft wrote: I never use AGC on cw, only on ssb (and that ain't too often, hi) Bill K3WJV On Thursday, April 26, 2018, 1:17:25 PM EDT, Leroy Bullerwrote: Hello all. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Grounding Question
Thanks for this reference. K6STI sent me a comparable paper from NASA. Note that the graph (which came direct but not on the reflector) is for the radiated field, not the energy in the strike itself. My reference for lightning spectrum is for the energy in a strike, and is from IEEE Standards for power and grounding, which are published as "The Emerald Book" and "The Green Book." It's been at least ten years since I read it, and I don't recall in which book it is stated. 73, Jim K9YC On 4/25/2018 5:17 PM, Jef Allbright wrote: On Wed, Apr 25, 2018 at 4:17 PM, Jim Brown>wrote: On 4/25/2018 1:59 PM, Jef Allbright wrote: The vast majority of the energy in a lightning strike is well below 1 MHz WRONG! So the bulk of the energy is released well below 1 MHz. To provide equivalent energy above 1 MHz, you'd have to imagine the graph somehow suddenly leveling off and then continuing at that amplitude (25dB down) for nearly 500 MHz to provide a similar integral area. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I currently use AN1; and AN2; to select between the two antenna inputs on the K3 - this requires two switches be assigned to toggle between antennas. Push button selection. However, on the K3, only a single switch ANT on the rig to toggle between the antennas. Toggle selection. Is there a macro or assignable command to toggle from a single key? Re: [Elecraft] Reminder: Most Elecraft rigs can scan "dead" bands for signals
I wrote a macro that will scan the range between the VFO-A freq and the VFO-B freq. Just dial in the freqs and hit the macro key. A short push will scan muted; a long push will scan unmuted. A manually paused scan can be resumed by hitting the SCAN key. Named "SCANNOW" in the Programmer's Reference PDF. Regarding scan, I wish... - scan rate could be variably adjusted during scan; the current COARSE is often too fast and the FINE is too slow; - could set a fixed dwell time; the current dwell time is random. 73, Drew AF2z On 04/25/18 23:46, Wayne Burdick wrote: Those of you who are new users of an Elecraft K2, K3/K3S, KX2, or KX3 may not know about the scanning and channel-hoping feature that’s common to all of these rigs. Scanning a seemingly “dead” band segment can reveal signals as they come up, allowing you to do other things (work out, paint, dust, reread “Ecotopia” by Ernest Callenbach, brew an IPA, whatever). You might think of scanning as an eyes-free panadapter. Well, I do. The basic scanning mode keeps the receiver muted until signals appear. It’s a real ear-saver. In addition, the K2, K3/K3S, and KX3 have a “live scan” feature that simply scans continuously with the receiver audio unmuted. This is especially useful on bands where very weak signals might appear from nowhere out of low-level atmospheric noise, say 15 meters. All of these radios also support hopping among a set of labeled memories. This is typically used on 60 meters or other channelized bands, e.g. those with repeater allocations. For details, see “Scanning” in your owner’s manual's table of contents. Tips: - If you’re scanning for CW signals, perhaps this coming Friday in honor of Morse’s birthday (hint), set the bandwidth very narrow (50-200 Hz). - If there’s a lot of band noise, turn off the preamp. This will give the scanning algorithm more audio dynamic range to work with. - Scanning steps match those set up for the VFO knob; using fine steps will miss fewer signals but take longer to scan the segment of interest. - Configure all of the above *before* saving setups to memory as scan start/stop end points (VFO A and B). Later, you can recall your favorite scan ranges preconfigured for various band conditions. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to pu...@af2z.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX2 recommended power supply
That's a good unit. I have one, and recommend it. It's small enough to fit in my LowePro Edit 140 bag, along with my KX3, the mic, paddle and wire for an antenna. 73 de Ray K2ULR KX3 #211 -Original Message- From: W0FKTo: elecraft Sent: Wed, Apr 25, 2018 10:13 pm Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX2 recommended power supply I like the ProAudio Engineering Kx33.
