[Elecraft] Kidde Smoke detectors

2020-11-08 Thread Frederick Dwight
I had several 7 year old Kidde wired smoke/CO detectors on two levels. I only
run 100 watts, but occasionally triggered alarms on 160 meters where my
vertical is
only 30 feet from the house. I replaced all detectors with First Alert units
which come with a 10 year back up battery. Never any trouble with the Kidde or
First Alert units on 80-6 meters. I never installed any ferrite or ran a high
power amp so no idea how they would respond to 1KW plus. The First Alert units
do not have the voice warning, but give coded beeps for fire and CO. I tried
one unit first, then since my old ones were 7 years old, just replaced them
all. This is not a scientific
test with a sample size of ONE. Just an idea to try, and my new units have
only been installed less than 2 years. Good Luck. KL7CW

Hi,
Got the attachments in the other email, thank you... I will be sending
a piece of traffic...

Interestingly enough, ardop works, and VARA does not, even though both
are set up the same...

In any case, thank you for the help!

its VARA or ARDOP (and VARA is quickly emerging as the standard, since it

Hi Lyn,

First off, THANK YOU for the help!! I must have been unclear in my
first post...

I was using Winlink Winmore, and it does drive the radio to different
frequencies, the radio control is partially working... It also used to
work 100%...

I am presented with a COM port, not a USB selection, (Winmore, or Vara),
when in the RADIO SETTINGS within the program, nothing to do with USB...

I was not aware there was a Red Cross drill was coming up. I keep
Winlink around in the event of an emergency, it would be nice to be able
to get out an email or two in that event.

My Winlink setup is based on my desktop machine, (not mobile in any
way), which is Windows 10. It has worked in the past with zero issues
across multiple updates...

Yes, what you said was " Kenwood, Yaesu and Ten-Tec transceivers do not
provide bias for an electret mic *at all*. To use an electret mic with
those transceivers one needs to install a "power adder"". Actually they do
provide bias to their own line of electret mics, so you could have been a
little more specific and said "for non-OEM mics". We can't tell what you
are thinking when you type.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kidde smoke detectors; Any follow up on RFI frm wireless models?

2020-11-08 Thread Paul Taenzer
Hello Lyn and Thanks.

I have a very similar arrangement with the KPA/KAT500 and three wired Kidde
smoke/ CO detectors.

I've had problems with it periodically over the years in spite of various
attempts to resolve triggering the smoke detectors using various ferrite
cores and bypass capacitors and being as fastidious as I can with grounding
in the shack.

Glad to hear it's working well in your shack

;-)

I'd be interested if anyone has experience running some power with the new
wirelessly interconnected Kidde detectors that create their own rf based
interconnection rather than use the wifi system that may already be present
in the home.

Hello,

I read the thread from several weeks ago discussing the Kidde wireless
interconnected smoke detectors and the concern that they would be triggered
by RF from ham radio.

Has anyone who is running any power tried them?

A local ham running 100 watts hasn't had problems.

2020-11-08 Thread VA3LX
Hello,

I read the thread from several weeks ago discussing the Kidde wireless
interconnected smoke detectors and the concern that they would be triggered
by RF from ham radio.

Has anyone who is running any power tried them?

A local ham running 100 watts hasn't had problems.

I have a Kidde wired interconnection smoke detector system that I trigger
with > 250 watts. Numerous attempts with ferrite chokes and bypass
capacitors haven't resolved it.

2020-11-08 Thread Walter Underwood
The official product page is also wrong, either through ignorance or
spell-check. It describes it as "a sensitive electric microphone”.

https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/accessories/cm500/features.html#product-tabs

I think we can all agree that a) it has an electret mic, and b) the official
product descriptions are a mess.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Cancellation

2020-11-08 Thread kevinr

Hello,

Due to the sweepstakes contest there will be no CW nets today.
Gives me time to do some serious fall cleaning.  I hope the solar flux
remains high.  It is over 90 right now after years stuck at 70.  There
is also a large sunspot group.  The new solar cycle has arrived.

   See you next week,

  Kevin.  KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] CM-500

2020-11-08 Thread Bill Frantz
As I noted in my report, which deliberately reached no
conclusions, just the facts ma'am, the microphone stopped
working when I removed the "bias" on the K3. So it needs that
power. Well, electret microphones certainly need power to run
their internal amplifiers. Some other microphones (e.g.
condensor) also need power, which is why pro audio systems have
phantom power over their audio cables.

It very probably isn't a dynamic mic, although someone might
build a dynamic mic with a built-in amplifier which would only
work with external power. YMMV!

However, given the electret microphones are very cheap and are
good quality, I'd bet on electret.

For more information and a fun read, see

The CM500 has had an ELECTRET mic as far back as 2008, when
W6XU, another audio professional, arranged a group purchase for
your Bay Area contesting club. It DOES need Bias, which most
modern rigs provide on one pin of their mic connector. Simply
adding a resistor of suitable value (in the range of 5-10KOhms)
between that pin and the mic input pin, provides bias suitable
for most electret mics.

Hi again,

Thank you! I set Ardop, and all is working again... I will move to

You mentioned a Red Cross drill... Our club is associated with the Red

If you try to send a Winmor message thru an RMS station, it will not happen.

P2P Winmor still works, but for messages designed to go thru the CMS on HF,
its VARA or ARDOP (and VARA is quickly emerging as the standard, since it is
much faster than ARDOP).

2020-11-08 Thread Gwen Patton
Since I mostly use my KX3 at home with the PX3 and KXPA100, I have the
radio permanently connected to the audio of my computer. I have Voicemeeter
Potato installed, so my output is the computer's speakers (currently sent
to headphones), and the mike input comes from a Zoom H4n Handy Recorder in
USB interface mode. The radio doesn't supply power, the USB on the computer
does. If I had to hook it direct, I'd make a custom cable for the mike
input, XLR to 3.5mm, or at worst, 1/4" phono to 3.5mm. The H4n has, in
addition to built-in mikes, XLR in/out with integral 1/4" sockets. Then I'd
put batteries in the H4n to supply its power. The H4n also has a 1/4"x24
stud mount, so it can be connected to a tripod, a cold shoe for a video
camera, or a mike stand adapter to fit a standard mike stand or boom.
That's how I have it set up right now, with an On-Stage extendable arm,
clamped to the upright pipe of the wire rack next to my chair that I use as
my "shack stack".

The built-in stereo mikes are electrets, of course, but they're GOOD
electrets. The H4n is prosumer gear bordering on professional grade, with
VERY good sound. I get a lot of compliments on the SSB output of this setup.

Just Winlink fails to PTT.

The sales/marketing department, usually ignorant of what they're
selling, wrote that drivel you're reading, which is intended simply to
sell more of whatever they're selling.

The CM500 has had an ELECTRET mic as far back as 2008, when W6XU,
another audio professional, arranged a group purchase for your Bay Area
contesting club. It DOES need Bias, which most modern rigs provide on
one pin of their mic connector. Simply adding a resistor of suitable
value (in the range of 5-10KOhms) between that pin and the mic input
pin, provides bias suitable for most electret mics.
