[Elecraft] Exhaust Fans

2017-02-11 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Fellow Elcrafters:

Been reading the posts about fans for the K3.

So here’s my dumb question for the week.

Are there fans specifically designed to exhaust hot air from radios as opposed
to fans that blow cool air into the radio?

Or is it simply a matter of turning the fan upside down to go from “blow in”
to “exhaust out”??

Thanks for any info.

[Elecraft] Audio Output Impedance of the KX3

2017-01-23 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

Checked the KX3 manual but was unable to find the audio output impedance of the
KX3, i.e., what impedance headphones/speaker should I be using on the rig?

I’m looking to buy a lightweight headset for portable ops and want to know what
impedance I should be looking for.

Many thanks for any info.

[Elecraft] KX3/iPad mini and PSK31

2016-08-06 Thread Joe W2KJ

I have an iPad mini that I would like to use with my KX3 to operate
PSK31/RTTR/CW in my portable ops.

I saw on QTH that Pignology made something that would do the job but i can seem

I sent an email to them and got a response back indicating the owner was
traveling in Europe and wouldn't be back for several days, thus my query to the
group.

If anyone using an iPad and KX3 for PSK31/RTTY/CW or.PSK31 only. I

[Elecraft] KX2 and Field Day

2016-06-27 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

Was able to take my KX2 out for Field Day for a while on Sunday and made a
bunch of contacts.

Operated all CW save for one SSB contact...just to try that mode out (grin).

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the KX2 handled all of the strong
signals on the bands...no overload and selectivity was excellent.

Even worked stations on 15 and 10M.bands I had presumed dead based on zero
activity during the previous week.

Purchased the rig with the accessory battery and charger and they play well
together.

Hardly put a dent in the battery after an hour or so of operating.

Overall, a really fun experience for the first time out portable with the
KX2and it performed extremely well.

With its internal tuner and battery and very small size, the KX2 is an
excellent choice for portable ops.

I thought the KX3 was the ultimate fun-portable rig..until now (grin).

Elecraft has hit another one out of the park with this little rig.

Howdy Fellow Elecrafters:

As I anxiously wait for my KX2 to arrive I'd like to congratulate Wayne and
Eric for hitting this one out of the ball park.

I don't believe there is another QRP rig on the market that can compare feature

In any event the KX2 will be my portable field rig for the foreseeable future.

Sitting here in my shack I'm trying to visualize just how small the KX2
is..hard to believe!!

Hoping to get my new rig before Field Day...that will provide a good "shake-out
for the little rig.

Things sure have changed since I was a Novice back in '62 (grin)DX20 and

I'd like to be around for another 54 to see the future tech...but I don't think

[Elecraft] Icoms answer to the KX3??

2015-10-28 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Fellow Elecrafters:

Saw something new from Icom called the IC7300.

Looks like a direct conversion architecture ala the KX3 but larger in size, I
believe.

The KX3 might have been the first such multi-band design with front panel
display, knobs. buttons, etc, similar to traditional superhet transceivers and
it appears that Icom is following the lead.

Would love to see the technical specs on this new rig.

[Elecraft] Upgrades for the K3

Is there info on the Elecraft website that describes what new boards will be

Re: [Elecraft] Is there a K4 on the horizon?

2015-04-01 Thread Joe W2KJ
I tend to agree with Joe's comments.

The K1 was a much different rig than the KX1 and the K2.

These were distinctly different rigs..one didn't morph into the other , etc.

A full size K4 (whatever size that may be) might be of great appeal to the
Amateur that wants a larger and perhaps easier to use radio, larger buttons, no
push or hold functions, spectrum display, etc.

I love my K3 and KX3 but I would welcome a K4it's gonna happen
sometime...the K3 will be getting a little long in the tooth in a few years (or
sooner).

Looking forward to warmer weather here in Southeastern North Carolina and
taking my KX3 to the field and play with some new antennas.

The fun never stops!!

A huge selling point for me was the modular and up-gradable approach of the
 K3 (and the K-Line as a whole)
You can go every where from the Base radio (as a great radio all by itself)
up to the full blown K-Line fully loaded.

I also had radios from The Other Guys and having to buy a whole new radio
to get new features really is a waste of money.

As the Elecraft product line increases it allows me to add in new gear that
integrates well in both function and appearance
to my existing equipment so I don't wind up with the mishmash of shapes and
sises so common with the other guys

Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 4band version gone?

2014-07-17 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Fellow Elecrafters:

OK...it's so obvious even I figured it out.

Notice that we have a KX1 and a KX3??

What happened to the KX2?? Well, read on.

I predict the next new transceiver from Elecraft will render obsolete the K1-4
and KX1 obsolete...it will be called, obviously, the KX2.

It will be a CW only all band 160M-6M DDS VFO controlled Direct Conversion SDR
ala the KX3 but much smaller.

Perfect for field use it will become the new rage of the SOTA and IOTA crowd as
well as the QRP community in general that likes to take their rigs out for
portable OPS.

OK Waynesorry I let the cat out of the bag but at times I am just so darn
prescient it surprises me.

So, when can we expect the new KX2 to be available for order??

OK...OK...All of the above said with tongue firmly placed inside of
cheek.but it is just too nice to think about.

I really wonder why the KX2 nomenclature has been skipped???

Am I on to something??? (large grin).

[Elecraft] Desk microphones for the K3

2014-07-08 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

I needed a HI Z mike for my TR7 and decided on the MC50just rewired the
plug to be compatible with the TR7 and it works FB.

I also got an MC60A mike for my K3...got an 8 to 4 pin mike adaptor, which I
had to re-wire, and set bias to OFF on the FP)...the K3 likes it and I get
good audio reports.

OK...so why not go one further...I got an MC50 for my Drake T4XC and it works
great.

No RFI or any other issues with any of the rigs...maybe I'm just lucky.

The MC50 andMC60A can be switch from LO to HI Z which makes them extremely
versatile in terms of old and new rigs they will work with.

I do really like the ability to remove the mike from its holder and use it
like a hand mike.

Funny, I'm 100% CW and QRP except for one weekly sked on SSB with a retired
buddyplus I love to keep the older classic rigs on the air...perhaps since
I grew up with them (grin).

My favorite rig hands down is the KX3...simply the ultimate in small, portable
QRP gear.

Re: [Elecraft] Weller WTCPT soldering sta....?

2014-06-05 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

I had a Weller WTCPT soldering station for several years...it performed well.

Several years ago I decided to try a Hakko 936 soldering station (based largely
on excellent reports posted to the QRP-Lists.

The 936 was an excellent performer...when the new digital FX888D station came
out I decided to buy it.

This is an excellent soldering station ala the 936 and I have had very good
results with the unit.

Again, based on comments posted to the QRP-Lists I bought a couple of
replacement tips from Plato.

[Elecraft] Ever had a WOW moment?

2013-12-26 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

As the subject says, have you ever had a WOW moment using QRP on the bands??

I just did as I answered a very weak response to my CQ on 21.060 at 1613Z.

G3YPZ called and I couldn't really couldn't copy much until I got him zero beat
and turned on the APF in my KX3.

Finally got his call and then copied just about 100% of his transmissions from
then on.

Turns out that John was running a K3 at 100mw!! Of course the fact that he
had a 2 element quad certainly helped but I can't recall ever working a DX
station when he was running so little power.

Solar Flux today is only at 123 so condx not great but 15m can be magical at
times.

This QRP stuff is amazing...we can be thankful to Wayne and Eric for such
superb equipment that allow us to work farther with less these days.

I harken back to my beginning days as a Novice with a homebrew 6V6 and S77
Hallicrafters receiver...amazing that I made any QSOs back then in 1962!!

[Elecraft] Importance of good coaxial jumpers

2013-11-11 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

I find my KX3 to be my go to QRP rig these daysmy K3 is getting dusty
(grin).

I was on 15M CW the other day and noticed birdies every 1Khz across the band.

I didn't think this was right so I dug deeper.

After eliminating the antenna coax switch and connecting the antenna directly
to my KX3 lo and behold...no birdies.

Hmmmwhat's going on here.

I replaced the coax jumper cable (RG58) from my KX3 to my coax antenna switch
with a new one and the birdies disappeared!!

I checked the cable (PL259's on each end) and found that the braid was not
solderedevidently the only thing making connection from the braid to the
reducer was a friction fit.

The copper braid looked kinda sparse so I replaced with a know new good jumper
cable and the problem was solved.

Now I'm gonna check all the coax jumper cables I have in the shack and make
sure they all have properly installed coax connectors on them.

Lesson learnednow back to 15M!!

[Elecraft] KX3 RF preamp problem

2013-07-15 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

I developed a problem with my KX3 preamps earlier today...I lost the 10-20-30db
preamps on 80M and 6M.

Have no idea how this could happenbut then radio mysteries keep us on our
toes now don't they?? (grin).

After an exchange of several emails with Howard at Elecraft support I had my
KX3 back operating normally.

I had to load the original config file for my KX3 s/n 994...after doing that
all was well.

Kudos to Howard and Elecraft for such wonderful customer support.

If my rig had been a YaeCommWood..well, you know the drill.

I will continue to spend my ham radio money wisely by buying Elecraft
products...after 2 K2's, 4 K1's, 5KX1's and 2 K3's I have learned to value and
appreciate Elecraft customer supportthat's why I keep going back.

Keep up the excellent work Elecraft.

I've trimmed several PAR EFHW antennas over the past few years and don't cut

lengthening the wire until I hit the sweet spot.

[Elecraft] New product for KX3

2013-07-09 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

I power my KX3 from an outboard LiFePo battery in my portable ops and don't
need the KXBC3 battery charger module.

It would be nice not to have to set the TIME on the KX3 every time it is
powered up and I was thinking about a simple plug-in board with a keep-alive
battery on it that could be plugged into the KXBC3 slot.

Is this feasible or am I hopelessly lost in wishful dreaming??

[Elecraft] New product for KX3

2013-07-09 Thread Joe W2KJ

Sorry Fred, but I can't justify spending $60 just to have a clock (grin).

I have a watch and carry my iPhone and they do just fine...it's just a matter
of convenience reading the time off of the KX3 display.

As far as prices for LiFePo batteries being outrageous, I bought a Zippy
4200mah LiFePo for $42 and $22 for the chargerbeen using it with my KX3
and get quite a few hours of operation at 4W.

I agree that BuddiPole LiFePo batteries are out of sight.but perhaps the
plug and play aspect of the BuddiPole batts are what people don't mind
 paying for.

Imagine..I had to install an Anderson PowerPole connector on the leads of my
Zippy battery!!...took all of five minutes.

One can buy 4 Zippy batteries for the price of one BuddiPole battery...not a
 bad bang for the buck.

Assuming all the stuff comes from China anyway.

   73, Joe W2KJ

If not for that reason alone it's worth the cost of the KXBC3. Personally I
wouldn't own a KX3 without one and I use an external battery also. A Belkin
10Ah battery with built-in charger and power plug that fits KX3. They are
small weigh about 4# and last a very long time, best part can be bought used
 on eBay for about $20.

The price of the LifePo is outrageous for what it is and Ah's vs. weight
 WOW!

[Elecraft] KX3 VFO Noise Reduction mod

2013-07-08 Thread Joe W2KJ
Howdy Gang:

I just did the KX3 VFO Noise Reduction mod put out by Wayne recently and it
worked a treat.

No VFO noise can be heard...even without an antenna...6 and 10 meters were most
affected until I did the mod...everything is FB now.

If you haven't done the mod yet it is well worth the few minutes it takes to
get it done.

I purchased my first Elecraft kit...a K2...back in 1999...built several since
then...now have a K3 along with the KX3.

Great performance and superb design and engineering go into these rigs .

Along with the best customer support on the planet keeps me going back to
Elecraft time and again.

Oh, and by the way, these two radios are at the top of the charts for receiver
performance!!

Many thanks Elecraft for continuing excellent support of your products.

Re: [Elecraft] PAR End Fed Half Wave antenna

2009-03-02 Thread Joe W2KJ
I've been using two PAR EFHW (End Fed Half Wave) antennas in portable ops
for several weeks now with excellent results.

I have the 20/40M and the 10/20/40M antennas that I use at the local park.

What I like about these antennas, besides the fact that they work very well
indeed, is that no transmission or support rope is required.

I get one end up in the air using the monofilament line on my wrist rocket
and tape the match box end to my operating tablea short coax jumper
cable to my K2 or KX1 completes the installation.

Using the monofilament on the wrist rocket to support one end of the antenna
obviates the need for a support rope of some kind so this along with the
transmission line is eliminated.

These end fed half waves appear to be ideal for backpacking ops since they
eliminate a lot of weight and bulk.

I also have played with an 88ft center fed doublet fed with 450 ohm ladder
line and this has also been an excellent portable antenna, although it
requires a transmission line and antenna tuner and at least one support rope
in the center and two shorter lines for the ends.

What is really neat about the PAR EFHW's is that once pruned and tuned no
antenna tuner is required so even more weight and bulk is eliminated for the
portable operator.

The PAR 10/20/40M job provides 3 bands of operation with no tuner,
transmission line or support rope...not too shabby.

We are supposed to warm up considerably hear in southeastern North Carolina
over the weekendsupposed to be in the 70's so I'll be in the park on
Saturday and perhaps on Sunday playing with these antennas...hope to meet
you on the air this weekend (CW of course!!!--grin)

[Elecraft] K3 Mojo

2009-02-25 Thread Joe W2KJ
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool CW Op and have been trying to work K5D for the past
week on QRP CW to no availwith a CF Zepp up only 20 feet I am not
surprised (grin).

After looking around the bands for them I heard them on 18.165 SSB of all
things listening on 18.155 and I worked them on the 3rd call with my K3 at
5W on SSB..go figure!!!

I can't remember the last time I operated SSB with my K3 but it has been a
while so I guess you just can't keep the Elecraft/K3 Mojo down.

I operated portable QRP this past weekend from a local park with my K2 at 4W
and a 100 foot wire antenna up in the trees and worked a bunch of DX
stations...Hawaii being my best DX so the Elecraft Mojo is still jumping in
my K2.

And the Elecraft hits just keep on coming!!

Subject: [Elecraft] OT Slightly: PC Board Recovery -Plated Through Holes

I was putting together a kit this evening (non Elecraft) and discovered I
was using the wrong instruction sheet version to the parts and board I was
using. (Always check your parts before beginning - which I did not) I had to
putt about 10 resistors of the board. They are plated through holes. I did
not have a vacuum desoldering station...so I have to think of somethingto
get the solder out of the holes. A small drill? Anyone has some comments?

Lee Buller - K0WA
Embarrased to say the least

Howdy Lee:

If you don't have good solder wick then try using a stainless steel sewing
needle.

I've used a sewing needle many times and it works great...heat the pad and
stick the needle down thru the hole while the solder is melting.

The needle will push the solder out the other side where you can clip off
the excess and clean the remainder up with solder wickthe needle, being
stainless steel, won't adhere to the solder so it will just pull right back
out of the hole.

Best of luck in getting your board cleaned up.
