[Elecraft] S- Meter HF ver. VHF calibration
Would it be possible to set up the K3 so that we would have the availability to change the S meter calibration on 6 meters and the transverter bands to conform to the attached standards, it would be nice to have this user selectable in the menu. also it would have to be apply to the P3 Today two references values exist: for frequencies below 30 MHz, S9 is defined as a voltage of 50 uV over 50 Ohms at the receiver antenna connector; for frequencies above 30 MHz, S9 is defined as a voltage of 5 uV over 50 Ohms at the receiver antenna connector. This refers to an unmodulated carrier signal (N0N) that uses almost no bandwidth; in case of real signals using a given bandwidth, this definition may not be enough since a smaller receiver bandwidth allows a weaker minimum detectable signal, but S-points are still a good tool for comparing received signals. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - MH2 mic switch mechanical noise
I have the same problem, not so much with the mic, but with a loud relay in the Commander amp, I talked to Elecraft about 2 months ago and asked it they could add a bit more TX Delay to the menu. as they said the TX Delay works both in SSB CW, and they said it could add more time delay to be put in the next software up grade, this would allow the relays, mike switch etc to switch before any audio would xmit. and the delay would be adjustable.. Re: [Elecraft] Display frequency calibration
I use a program called Spectran ( freeware ) which will display the audio frequency of the output of the K3 I set the Frequency of the K3 to .000 kc (usb) this will produce a 1kc tone to the sound card in the computer when tuned to WWV at 10 mhz Spectran will then display the frequency of that audio tone on the screen. I then go into the K3 confg menu to REF CAL and adjust it so that the display on Spectran is as close to 1000 cycles ( 1kc ) as possible, the best I can set the K3 to is with in .27 of a cycle. it does vary between 5 mhz, 10 mhz @ 15 mhz though but not that much. that is close enough for me. also I find my self tuning in a station so there is a bit more highs to the sound which will also offset my tnx freq, guess I need to use the RIT more.. fwiw Ed -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Display-frequency-calibration-tp7563715p7563722.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] PR-6 issue when QRO
Gregg, check inside the amp and see if the RF choke between the pi network and the antenna jack is OK. I was running a SB221 converted to 6 and i had a bad choke connection to ground and when going to receive it would blow the rec. pre amp. what happens when that choke fails the plate blocking cap builds up a neg charge on the pi side and has no way to discharge untill it goes to receive and it discharges through the pre amp. the choke will discharge everything from the pi network to the antenna, FWIW Ed K7WIA -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/PR-6-issue-when-QRO-tp7511705p7512096.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I just put my KAP500 on a dummy load to set the drive power for all bands, started at 160 and worked up to 6. when I was done and before I removed the dummy load I saw spikes every 9.5 khz all across the P3. they are about 7dbm above the noise floor of the K3 when on the dummy load, turn off the KPA500 and they are gone. This is on 6 meters only as I don't see any on the other bands. when the antenna is connected they are just detectable above the ant noise.auggg.. just when I'm getting F2 on 6.. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 makes birdies on 6 meters
I just did a calibration check on the P3 and it was right on using the XG3 at -107 DBM with the K3 connected to a dummy load my measured noise floor is -133 DBM ( hard to get close as it is fuzzy) the strength of the birdies is at - 125 DBM. they seem to have peaks every 140 KHZ up and down the band, my lowest noise floor in the city is right at -125 at the best. so in the city this is not a big thing as you can just detect them if you know where to look for them. but I was planing to use the K3 + KPA500 for contesting in rare Grid squares in remote location out in the boonies, which would be away from city noise, and I am sure the noise floor would be at least -130 dbm then this would be a problem... maybe they can come up with a fix for it? Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot
No I don't believe there is a problem with the pot. because as I just start to turn it the gain reduces smoothly all the way. I believe it could be in the software, where as when the gain is reduced the ckt. that controls the bars in the S meter does not kick in soon enough. but it seams when I reduce the gain to where the ant. noise gets close to -136 dbm ( the noise floor of the K3) that is where I can detect the weak ones the best. It is just that my ears and brain seam to be more sensitive when the audio is soft than when it is loud, as when there is a lot of noise with the signal. it is just that I reduce the ant. noise close to the noise floor of the K3, the signals are still there and they stand out better for me... it's just that I started to use the old trick that been around for years, and noticed the S meter did not follow the gain control. Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot
Yes I am using the K3 I was using the preamp that is in the K3,I also have the ARR P50VD preamp on the back of the K3 but using it just raises the background noise to S7. Remember I live in the city. I can turn off the preamp that is in the K3, disconnect the antenna listen to the hiss of the K3, and then hook the antenna back and hear the noise increase.. i am going to try it with out using any preamp at all...I can still detect the weak beacon that are in my area. and still hear a increase in noise when the antenna is connected. but just to reduce the background noise has helped my 73 yo ears make the weak ones stand out better. even without the preamp on I still get the 2nd bar on the S meter to flicker, and i can reduce the Rf gain just slightly ( not much) to dip the S meter. just the joys of living in a big city, powerline, and wireless headphones on 6 meters Ed K7WIA -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/RF-gain-sweet-spot-tp6604787p6608306.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot
Don, when the RF gain is fully cw ( max ) I have 3 bars on the S Meter, when I slowly reduce the RF gain control I watch the S Meter and when I get it just past the 9 o'clock position the S Meter will reduce to only 1 bar showing. you can hear the background noise drop as you do this, then I just add a bit more gain back just enough to hear the noise increase back up. the lowest I can reduce the S meter is to 1 bar showing, I add just enough gain back to get the 2nd bar to flicker.. if i reduce the gain to much the S meter will start to climb back up in the normal maner Ed K7WIA -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/RF-gain-sweet-spot-tp6604787p6608509.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I don't know but I like it this way, as my noise floor changes through the day I do have to readjust the sweet spot, but it is just a very small turn of the RF knob I checked this with the noise blanker on and off and I see the same effect, it's just with the blanker off I can only reduce it to 2 bars on the meter. could be I got a special K3.. [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot
I found something interesting when I was working the CQ VHF contest this last weekend. I live in the city in which my noise level stays around S3. while searching for weak signals, I started to reduce the rf gain. as I reduced the gain I watched the S meter go down and as I contuned to reduce it more the S meter would start to climb back up. I found if I set the RF gain to where I got the lowest S meter reading ( S1 ) and then Increase the gain ever so slightly just to the point to where I would get the 2nd bar on the S meter to flicker was the sweet spot. as the RF gain is reduced my noise floor dropped, but it had no effect on the signals, so it seems to improve the Sig to noise ratio. so I now I reduce the gain to the lowest S meter bar ( S1 ) and then add gain just untill the 2nd bar just wants to flicker.so I guess this is called Dip the S meter I don't know how well this works on hf as I work mostly 6 meters. I thought I would pass this tip along. it might now work for everyone but it sure helped me dig out the weak ones. maybe someone in the know can explain what is going on... [Elecraft] P3 RFI
FWIW This morning we had a very good opening on 6 meters to the east coast Maine down to Florida from the PNW, When the band died, I thought it would be a good time to go out and snoop the neighborhood for the line noise source that bugs me, So i got out my MFJ Line Noise Meter, put it on the desk to put in a new battery. I turned it on and what a racket. so I snooped the shack and found it comes from the P3. turn the power off on the P3 and silence, I could get 30 feet away before I could not hear it any more. I don't hear any of the RFI on any band 1606. So I don't know if it is there on 2 meters, The MFJ receives on the Aircraft band around 137 MHZ. so I don't know if would effect 2 meters or not. I ran the whole VHF June contest with my K3/10K + Mirage A1015g brick + 8877 at 1500w out on 6 meters and have no trouble with the P3. in fact it helped me spot some very weak sig I would have missed with normal searching. although I found that the noise blanker in my Orion ll does a better job on the noise crud that I have living in the city.. BUT...when I go to CW with the K3 its a different ball game, the K3 blows the doors off the Orion. when I went to wk some really weak cw sigs I turned on the APF and did the sig stand out, The K3 is a real CW dream machine.. Re: [Elecraft] Problem with K3 receive audio
I also had the same problem as Tom did, I bought my K3 a little over 2 years ago ( ser # 22xx range) I use mine only for VHF work, an with the rig running in the background listing for band openings I was getting headache's...could figure it out for the longest time but some complants on the reflector got me looking into it. so i sold the K3 3 months later Elecraft came out with the DSP/ lowpass filter mod for the K3. The person that bought my rig had the mods done and said it made a very big improvement. I waited a while and watched what the others posted about the up grade and it was good. so I went and bought another K3 all I can say is it is a all toghter a different rig than the first one. the high frq artifacts are gone and the receive audio is very pleasent. it's just that I can't keep up with all the up grades that Elecraft keep comming up with Don't think the Elecraft crew ever sleep.. [Elecraft] P3 LVL CAL ?
I calibrated my K3 with the K3 utility with the XG2 , and set the Lvl Cal on the P3 to -10.6 for a S9 sig. but then when I went to the 6 Meter band I had to set the Lvl Cal to -22 to get a S9 sig on the P3, it's like there is not enough transfer gain when on the 6 meter band..even with the preamp on. so when changing from HF to 6 meters I have to change the P3. because the setting does not hold per band. could be that the P3 needs a spot to Cal just for 6 meters like it has for when using Xverters? Re: [Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?
when the K3 is set up to use the xverter bands the K3 will have to be set up to use what ever is decided to use (73dbm or 93dbm.) as the xverter IF will be on the 10 meter band, so when the K3 is using xverters the K3 will have to be set up on what ever xverter IF out put it uses to match the P3, as now the 10 meter band uses -93 dbm as S9. that will have to change to -73 dbm when xverters are in use. [Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?
I just downloaded the new software for the P3 the K3 and everything went well.. I set the P3 to display S meter readings (not DBM) and I noticed something when I went to the 6 meter band. I put a dummy load on the K3 and went through all the bands and set the REF LVL on the P3 so the base line is at S1 all went well till I got to the 6 meter band . the Ref Lvl on the P3 is set to 125 on all bands untill I get to 6 meters. now I have to set the Ref Lvl to 144 to get S1 to show at the bottom of the P3 and now the base line is at S5 and it should be down at S1 like all the other bands. this is with a dummy load attached right at the antenna connector of the K3..just switching between 10 6 meters its like there is too much output to the P3 when going to 6... am I missing something? I would sure like it to be set like it is on the HF bands. now when the antenna is connected, living in the city the base line will jump up 2 S units and be S7. and the S meter on the K3 will blink between S2 S3 Could the 6 meter gain be incorprated thto the menu XV Gain (transverter Gain) then we would have the choice between the 2 standard to use, as now most of us are still using 50 mv=S9 Ed -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-0-050-Glitch-tp5920743p5920807.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 noise blanker 6 meters
I use my K3 only for 6 meter work, but I have been unhappy with the performace of the noise blanker for pulse spikes. no matter how I adjust the DSP or the IF blanker I cant seem to bank out the pulses. I can take out the power line type buzz but not the sharp spikes When playing with the IF adjustments and I increase it to NAR-7 with the DSP OFF my S meter goes from S3 to S6 and the backkground noise increases and sounds almost like intermod. When I turned my antenna all of a sudden the noise level dropped to S3 my normal background level. I tuned down band a found 3 very strong signals,S9+40 (baby monitors) 49.830 49.870 49.890 It seems the IF blanker samples signals before the filters and therefore look at a very large sprectrum. and it appears that those strong down band signals overload the blanker... I turned my antenna and peaked the monitor signals, then tuned up band, when I got to 50.450 the overload went away. which is 600KC above the interfering signals. The bad part is if I turn my antenna to where I don't have the overload my antenna will be stuck on JA land... not much good this time of the cycle when you live in Seattle It would be nice to be able to keep it pointed at Florida but that right where the interferences is the worse. don't know of the DSP code can be modified to incorperate pulse type spikes or not.. [Elecraft] noise blanker/ 6 meter update
what I have done is put a bandpass filter in line with the K3 antenna..the one I had that worked best was one made by Gold Line for CB'ers, its nothing more than a pi network, cap/coil/cap and its tuneable from 13 to 73 megs, it worked better than the one made by ICE... now I can set IF NOR-7 all the way to WIDE-7 and don't have the apperant overload problem. so far it seems to do the job. once and a while I hear a pop, so I still have to play with the settings.. So now to the VHF hand book and look up that strip line filter for 6.. [Elecraft] ERR TXF panic
while going through the menu adjusting the AGC setting the AF gain to low seemed to help with the back ground noise. happy with that I went and did the Tnx Gain calibration and got the ERR TXF.. seems that when I went through the menu screen past FL1 BW my fat fingers bump the VFO B knob and changed the setting from 2.80 to 2.60. and that shut it down. Now would there be anyway to have it set up to lock the setting that are set in the menu, as tuning through them and not accidently bumping them...like pushing the LOCK button to unlock the item to make a change and when you move on to another item have it go into a lock mode.. Re: [Elecraft] Battery power requirements
My question is, Under these circumstances, can I expect the battery to last for the more or less 18 hours that I will be operating? Obviosuly, if not, buying a second battery is a not-very-expensive option. Randy W6SJ The Amp Hour rating tells you how much amperage is available when discharged evenly over a 20 hour period. The amp hour rating is cumulative, so in order to know how many constant amps the battery will output for 20 hours, you have to divide the amp hour rating by 20. Example: If a battery has an amp hour rating of 75, dividing by 20 = 3.75. Such a battery can carry a 3.75 amp load for 20 hours before dropping to 10.5 volts. (10.5 volts is the fully discharged level, at which point the battery needs to be recharged.) A battery with an amp hour rating of 55 will carry a 2.75 amp load for 20 hours before dropping to 10.5 volts. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Battery-power-requirements-tp2914254p2914474.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Battery power requirements
Just doing the math...I would assume that you would draw aprox 20 amps at 100 watts.. you would not be at 100% duty cycle so that would help. I don't think that your rig would work very well when the battery dropped down to 10.5 volts what I would think would be useable would be a battery with a 400 amp hr rating.. 400 divided by 20 = 20 that would give you some head room... prob.. a deep cycle/RV type battery just a guess... Re: [Elecraft] 6 meters
I replaced my 6 meter station ( Orion O2 + Elecraft XV50 ) with the K3. I find that in my city location that the K3 is equal to the old set up. I do have the PR6 preamp but I find that I do not need it as the one in the K3 is just fine. living in the city the background noise is S3 - S4 most of the time..when the rains come it drops to S2..unless you live way out in the country and no noise you should not need the PR6 as all it will do is raise the noise floor don't forget that the skip on 6 meters can be quite selective, I have observed that stations 5 miles away from me can work station that I can not hear and a bit later I will be working them and the other station won't hear them.. I have a 5 MHZ crystal reference that I use the 10th harmonic for calibration at 50 Mhz and use it for a weak signal reference.. there is very little difference between the 2 station set ups.. you need to set it up to be able to switch between the 2 radios and compare at the same time.. if the K3 is weak contact Elecraft support...
