[Elecraft] S- Meter HF ver. VHF calibration

2013-12-05 Thread K7WIA
Would it be possible to set up the K3 so that we would have the availability
to change the S meter calibration on 6 meters and the transverter bands to
conform to the attached standards, it would be nice to have this user
selectable in the menu. also it would have to be apply to the P3

Today two references values exist: for frequencies below 30 MHz, S9 is
defined as a voltage of 50 uV over 50 Ohms at the receiver antenna
connector; for frequencies above 30 MHz, S9 is defined as a voltage of 5 uV
over 50 Ohms at the receiver antenna connector. This refers to an
unmodulated carrier signal (N0N) that uses almost no bandwidth; in case of
real signals using a given bandwidth, this definition may not be enough
since a smaller receiver bandwidth allows a weaker minimum detectable
signal, but S-points are still a good tool for comparing received signals.
S-points for frequencies below 30 MHz:

[Elecraft] K3 6 mtr Pre Amp mounting for back clearance

2013-05-25 Thread K7WIA
This is how I mounted my Pre Amp for 6 mtrs so I would have clearance in the
back,
The Pre Amp does not extend any further than the back of the RS232
connectors when the cable is attached... used 2 standoff's a piece of
aluminum and 2 longer screws

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - MH2 mic switch mechanical noise

2012-11-10 Thread K7WIA
I have the same problem, not so much with the mic, but with a loud relay in
the Commander amp,

I talked to Elecraft about 2 months ago and asked it they could add a bit
more TX Delay to the menu.
as they said the TX Delay works both in SSB CW, and they said it could add
more time delay to be put in the next software up grade, this would allow
the relays, mike switch etc to switch before any audio would xmit. and the
delay would be adjustable..

Re: [Elecraft] Display frequency calibration

2012-10-04 Thread K7WIA
I use a program called Spectran ( freeware ) which will display the audio
frequency of the output of the K3
I set the Frequency of the K3 to .000 kc (usb) this will produce a
1kc tone to the sound card in the computer when tuned to WWV at 10 mhz

Spectran will then display the frequency of that audio tone on the screen.

I then go into the K3 confg menu to REF CAL and adjust it so that the
display on Spectran is as close to
1000 cycles ( 1kc ) as possible,
the best I can set the K3 to is with in .27 of a cycle. it does vary
between 5 mhz, 10 mhz @ 15 mhz though but not that much.
that is close enough for me.

also I find my self tuning in a station so there is a bit more highs to the
sound which will also offset my tnx freq, guess I need to use the RIT
more..

Re: [Elecraft] Display frequency calibration

2012-10-04 Thread K7WIA
Just another note:My K3 will not produce a audio tone below 200 cycles in
the speaker.. ( could be my ears) so finding a zero beat is impossible as I
could be off that much above or below WWV trying to callibrate that way.

Re: [Elecraft] PR-6 issue when QRO

2012-04-29 Thread K7WIA
Gregg, check inside the amp and see if the RF choke between the pi network
and the antenna jack is OK.

I was running a SB221 converted to 6 and i had a bad choke connection to
ground and when going to receive it would blow the rec. pre amp.

what happens when that choke fails the plate blocking cap builds up a neg
charge on the pi side and has no way to discharge untill it goes to receive
and it discharges through the pre amp.
the choke will discharge everything from the pi network to the antenna,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500 birdies

2012-01-28 Thread K7WIA
Contact Dale at Elecraft support...I had the same problem and it turned
out to be a bad cap on the board behind the front panel. they sent me a
replacement board right away.

A way to check it is go into the menu on the KPA500 set the LED BRT to
DAY and see if the birdies go away. if so it is a bad board, the birdies
are only present when the LED BRT is set to anything but DAY..

it has something to do with the driver for the display..

[Elecraft] KPA500 6 meter birdie source found

2011-11-15 Thread K7WIA
This is what I found as the source of the birdie's in the amp.

with the LCD BRT set anywhere from 1 to 8 the birdies are there.
with the LCD BRT set to DAY the birds are gone..

I have been working all day with Dale @ Elecraft with this and just sent him
a e-mail of what I found.
Dale has been very involved in this trying to track this down..

now we need to see just what kind of fix we can come up with..

I can't Thank Dale and crew enough for the support they have put into this,
as it appears everyone got envolved.

Thanks Again Dale @ crew..

[Elecraft] KPA500 makes birdies on 6 meters

2011-11-14 Thread K7WIA
I just put my KAP500 on a dummy load to set the drive power for all bands,
started at 160 and worked up to 6.
when I was done and before I removed the dummy load I saw spikes every 9.5
khz all across the P3.
they are about 7dbm above the noise floor of the K3 when on the dummy load,
turn off the KPA500 and they are gone. This is on 6 meters only as I don't
see any on the other bands. when the antenna is connected they are just
detectable above the ant noise.auggg.. just when I'm
getting F2 on 6..
Oh well if they get to bad I have a Commander VHF1200 as a stand

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 makes birdies on 6 meters

2011-11-14 Thread K7WIA
I just did a calibration check on the P3 and it was right on using the XG3 at
-107 DBM

with the K3 connected to a dummy load my measured noise floor is -133 DBM (
hard to get close as it is fuzzy) the strength of the birdies is at
- 125 DBM.

they seem to have peaks every 140 KHZ up and down the band,

my lowest noise floor in the city is right at -125 at the best.
so in the city this is not a big thing as you can just detect them if you
know where to look for them.

but I was planing to use the K3 + KPA500 for contesting in rare Grid squares
in remote location out in the boonies, which would be away from city noise,
and I am sure the noise floor would be at least -130 dbm
then this would be a problem...

maybe they can come up with a fix for it?

[Elecraft] P3 base line changes with span with.

2011-11-07 Thread K7WIA
I was using the P3 to capture a pix of the interference that I have on the 6
meter band calling frenquency to send to the FCC.

I captured a pix with the span set on the P3 at 100 kc,
then I reduced the span to 10 kc and captured a pix.

but I noticed that my noise floor with the span set at 100 is -125 dbm this
was adjusted with the XG3.
but when I reduced the span to 10 kc the noise floor changed to -135 dbm.
as I reduce the span from 100 kc it hold steady untill reduced to 50 kc and
as I narrow more the noise floor drops as it is being reduced

what is going on?

Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-23 Thread K7WIA
Hi Ed..I just did a check using the XG3. tap the disp button to display
AFV
I do not see a drop in voltage untill I turn the RF knob to about the 3:00
o'clock position.
so it seams that untill the RF knob gets to there, there is no gain
reduction untill we get past that point.
and at the point I start to see a reduction of AFV, the S Meter just starts
to do its dip, it will go down a small bit more and then start to climb up
as I reduce the gain more

Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-22 Thread K7WIA
No I don't believe there is a problem with the pot. because as I just start
to turn it the gain reduces smoothly all the way. I believe it could be in
the software, where as when the gain is reduced the ckt. that controls the
bars in the S meter does not kick in soon enough.
but it seams when I reduce the gain to where the ant. noise gets close to
-136 dbm ( the noise floor of the K3) that is where I can detect the weak
ones the best. It is just that my ears and brain seam to be more sensitive
when the audio is soft than when it is loud, as when there is a lot of noise
with the signal. it is just that I reduce the ant. noise close to the noise
floor of the K3, the signals are still there and they stand out better for
me... it's just that I started to use the old trick that been around for
years, and noticed the S meter did not follow the gain control.

Re: [Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-21 Thread K7WIA
Yes I am using the K3
I was using the preamp that is in the K3,I also have the ARR P50VD
preamp on the back of the K3 but using it just raises the background noise
to S7.
Remember I live in the city. I can turn off the preamp that is in the K3,
disconnect the antenna listen to the hiss of the K3, and then hook the
antenna back and hear the noise increase.. i am going to try it with out
using any preamp at all...I can still detect the weak beacon that are in my
area. and still hear a increase in noise when the antenna is connected. but
just to reduce the background noise has helped my 73 yo ears make the weak
ones stand out better.
even without the preamp on I still get the 2nd bar on the S meter to
flicker, and i can reduce the Rf gain just slightly ( not much) to dip the
S meter.
just the joys of living in a big city, powerline, and wireless headphones
on 6 meters

Ok we did the RF calibration per the K3 utility program using the XG3 for the
signal source and I see no change with the way the S meter responds, being
I use the K3 for 6 meters only I set the S meter calibration for that band
using the XG3 this is how my S meter is set up in the Confg. menu.

SMTR OF: 027
SMTR SC: 012
SMTR PK: OFF
SMTR MD: NOR
this is set with the preamp on in the K3

-107 dbm = S3
-73 dbm = S9
-33 dbm = 40/9

Don, when the RF gain is fully cw ( max ) I have 3 bars on the S Meter,
when I slowly reduce the RF gain control I watch the S Meter and when I get
it just past the 9 o'clock position the S Meter will reduce to only 1 bar
showing. you can hear the background noise drop as you do this, then I just
add a bit more gain back just enough to hear the noise increase back up.
the lowest I can reduce the S meter is to 1 bar showing, I add just enough
gain back to get the 2nd bar to flicker.. if i reduce the gain to much the
S meter will start to climb back up in the normal maner

[Elecraft] RF gain sweet spot

2011-07-20 Thread K7WIA
I found something interesting when I was working the CQ VHF contest this last
weekend.
I live in the city in which my noise level stays around S3.
while searching for weak signals, I started to reduce the rf gain. as I
reduced the gain I watched the S meter go down and as I contuned to reduce
it more the S meter would start to climb back up.
I found if I set the RF gain to where I got the lowest S meter reading ( S1
) and then Increase the gain ever so slightly just to the point to where I
would get the 2nd bar on the S meter to flicker was the sweet spot. as the
RF gain is reduced my noise floor dropped, but it had no effect on the
signals, so it seems to improve the Sig to noise ratio.
so I now I reduce the gain to the lowest S meter bar ( S1 ) and then add
gain just untill the 2nd bar just wants to flicker.so I guess this
is called Dip the S meter
I don't know how well this works on hf as I work mostly 6 meters.
I thought I would pass this tip along. it might now work for everyone but it
sure helped me dig out the weak ones. maybe someone in the know can
explain what is going on...

[Elecraft] P3 RFI

2011-07-06 Thread K7WIA
FWIW

This morning we had a very good opening on 6 meters to the east coast Maine
down to Florida from the PNW,
When the band died, I thought it would be a good time to go out and snoop
the neighborhood for the line noise source that bugs me, So i got out my
MFJ Line Noise Meter, put it on the desk to put in a new battery. I turned
it on and what a racket. so I snooped the shack and found it comes from the
P3.
turn the power off on the P3 and silence, I could get 30 feet away before I
could not hear it any more.
I don't hear any of the RFI on any band 1606. So I don't know if it is
there on 2 meters, The MFJ receives on the Aircraft band around 137 MHZ. so
I don't know if would effect 2 meters or not.

years ago ( ser # 22xx range)

I use mine only for VHF work, an with the rig running in the background
listing for band openings I was getting headache's...could figure it out for
the longest time but some complants on the reflector got me looking into it.
so i sold the K3

3 months later Elecraft came out with the DSP/ lowpass filter mod for the
K3. The person that bought my rig had the mods done and said it made a very
big improvement.

I waited a while and watched what the others posted about the up grade and
it was good.
so I went and bought another K3

all I can say is it is a all toghter a different rig than the first one.
the high frq artifacts are gone and the receive audio is very pleasent.

it's just that I can't keep up with all the up grades that Elecraft keep
comming up with

Don't think the Elecraft crew ever sleep..

I love the APF

[Elecraft] P3 LVL CAL ?

2011-02-14 Thread K7WIA

I calibrated my K3 with the K3 utility with the XG2 , and set the Lvl Cal on
the P3 to -10.6 for a S9 sig.
but then when I went to the 6 Meter band I had to set the Lvl Cal to -22 to
get a S9 sig on the P3,
it's like there is not enough transfer gain when on the 6 meter band..even
with the preamp on.
so when changing from HF to 6 meters I have to change the P3. because the
setting does not hold per band.
could be that the P3 needs a spot to Cal just for 6 meters like it has for
when using Xverters?

[Elecraft] P3 noise floor base line question.

2011-02-05 Thread K7WIA

K3+P3. when the K3 is set up into a dummy load, with the pre amp OFF. the
noise base line is at S1/2 (between S0 S1) on the P3.
Then switching in the ATT the noise floor climbs to S2,
With the ATT switched in and the PREAMP on, the noise floor goes back to
S1.
With just the Preamp On the noise floor goes to S0
It does this on all bands
Is this right? or am I just nit-picky

Re: [Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?

2011-01-14 Thread K7WIA

when the K3 is set up to use the xverter bands the K3 will have to be set up
to use what ever is decided to use (73dbm or 93dbm.) as the xverter IF will
be on the 10 meter band, so when the K3 is using xverters the K3 will have
to be set up on what ever xverter IF out put it uses to match the P3,
as now the 10 meter band uses -93 dbm as S9. that will have to change to -73
dbm when xverters are in use.

[Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?

2011-01-13 Thread K7WIA

I just downloaded the new software for the P3 the K3 and everything went
well..

I set the P3 to display S meter readings (not DBM) and I noticed something
when I went to the 6 meter band.

I put a dummy load on the K3 and went through all the bands and set the REF
LVL on the P3 so the base line is at S1
all went well till I got to the 6 meter band .
the Ref Lvl on the P3 is set to 125 on all bands untill I get to 6 meters.
now I have to set the Ref Lvl to 144 to get S1 to show at the bottom of the
P3 and now the base line is at S5 and it should be down at S1 like all the
other bands. this is with a dummy load attached right at the antenna
connector of the K3..just switching between 10 6 meters its like there
is too much output to the P3 when going to 6...
am I missing something?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 0.050 Glitch?

2011-01-13 Thread K7WIA

Thanks Alan, that explains the error,

BUT without a antenna connected It should not show S5 when the K3's S meter
just blinks once in a while.
I would sure like it to be set like it is on the HF bands. now when the
antenna is connected, living in the city the base line will jump up 2 S
units and be S7. and the S meter on the K3 will blink between S2 S3
Could the 6 meter gain be incorprated thto the menu XV Gain (transverter
Gain)
then we would have the choice between the 2 standard to use, as now most
of us are still using 50 mv=S9

[Elecraft] K3 noise blanker 6 meters

2009-12-20 Thread K7WIA

I use my K3 only for 6 meter work, but I have been unhappy with the
performace of the noise blanker for pulse spikes.

no matter how I adjust the DSP or the IF blanker I cant seem to bank out the
pulses.

I can take out the power line type buzz but not the sharp spikes

When playing with the IF adjustments and I increase it to NAR-7 with the DSP
OFF my S meter goes from S3 to S6 and the backkground noise increases and
sounds almost like intermod.

When I turned my antenna all of a sudden the noise level dropped to S3 my
normal background level.

I tuned down band a found 3 very strong signals,S9+40 (baby monitors) 49.830
49.870 49.890

It seems the IF blanker samples signals before the filters and therefore
look at a very large sprectrum.

and it appears that those strong down band signals overload the blanker...

I turned my antenna and peaked the monitor signals, then tuned up band, when
I got to 50.450 the overload went away. which is 600KC above the interfering
signals.

The bad part is if I turn my antenna to where I don't have the overload my
antenna will be stuck on JA land... not much good this time of the cycle
when you live in Seattle

It would be nice to be able to keep it pointed at Florida but that right
where the interferences is the worse.

don't know of the DSP code can be modified to incorperate pulse type spikes
or not..

[Elecraft] noise blanker/ 6 meter update

2009-12-20 Thread K7WIA

what I have done is put a bandpass filter in line with the K3 antenna..the
one I had that worked best was one made by Gold Line for CB'ers, its nothing
more than a pi network, cap/coil/cap and its tuneable from 13 to 73 megs,
it worked better than the one made by ICE...
now I can set IF NOR-7 all the way to WIDE-7 and don't have the apperant
overload problem.
so far it seems to do the job. once and a while I hear a pop, so I still
have to play with the settings..

So now to the VHF hand book and look up that strip line filter for 6..

[Elecraft] ERR TXF panic

2009-12-18 Thread K7WIA

while going through the menu adjusting the AGC setting the AF gain to low
seemed to help with the back ground noise. happy with that I went and did
the Tnx Gain calibration and got the ERR TXF..

seems that when I went through the menu screen past FL1 BW my fat fingers
bump the VFO B knob and changed the setting from 2.80 to 2.60. and that
shut it down.

Now would there be anyway to have it set up to lock the setting that are set
in the menu, as tuning through them and not accidently bumping them...like
pushing the LOCK button to unlock the item to make a change and when you
move on to another item have it go into a lock mode..

it does not trip the Hi Current untill the current goes to 25 amps...but now

Re: [Elecraft] Battery power requirements

2009-05-16 Thread K7WIA

My question is, Under these circumstances, can I expect the battery to
last for the more or less 18 hours that I will be operating?

Obviosuly, if not, buying a second battery is a not-very-expensive option.

Randy W6SJ

The Amp Hour rating tells you how much amperage is available when discharged
evenly over a 20 hour period. The amp hour rating is cumulative, so in order
to know how many constant amps the battery will output for 20 hours, you
have to divide the amp hour rating by 20. Example: If a battery has an amp
hour rating of 75, dividing by 20 = 3.75. Such a battery can carry a 3.75
amp load for 20 hours before dropping to 10.5 volts. (10.5 volts is the
fully discharged level, at which point the battery needs to be recharged.) A
battery with an amp hour rating of 55 will carry a 2.75 amp load for 20
hours before dropping to 10.5 volts.

Re: [Elecraft] Battery power requirements

2009-05-16 Thread K7WIA

Just doing the math...I would assume that you would draw aprox 20 amps at
100 watts..
you would not be at 100% duty cycle so that would help.
I don't think that your rig would work very well when the battery dropped
down to 10.5 volts
what I would think would be useable would be a battery with a 400 amp hr
rating..
400 divided by 20 = 20
that would give you some head room...
prob.. a deep cycle/RV type battery

just a guess...

performs..to check feed line loss and to set up the output signal level to
our tranceivers.
what would be nice would be to have a signal source of a known level.
something like the XG2 but would cover 50, 144, 220. 432 or one for each
band

[Elecraft] reciever does quiet after tune

2009-03-09 Thread K7WIA

only notice this on 75 mtrs. went into tune and then back to receive and the
receiver sensitivy dropped way down..the band noise was S9 and after tune it
dropped to S5.
just keying the mike with out talking a few times would restore it back to
normal.
i can repeat it often but not every time...
can also make it happen by just keying the mike,

Re: [Elecraft] 6 meter audio problem

2009-01-21 Thread K7WIA

I just did a check on mine with your mic comp settings and it sounds bad.
set your mic gain with the comp off5-6 bars on the alc graph. then turn
on the comp at a low setting a adjust it upwards...go into the TEST mode and
listen to yourself with headphones...
it sounds like the mic is set to low and you are trying to componsate it
with the comp setting

Re: [Elecraft] Six meter birdies.

2009-01-05 Thread K7WIA

I replaced my Orion 2 + Elecraft XV50 xverter with the K3, and I find I DO
NOT have any extra birdies that the Orion combo a Icom IC751A + Microwave
modules xverter had...
don't know if you are new to 6 meters but in the city there are a few
between 50.115 - 50.120 and a couple lower in the band..
you might post the freq of the birdies you have and i'll check with my K3

[Elecraft] S meter calibration?

2008-12-27 Thread K7WIA

when calibrating the S meter, the manual says to have the pre-amp on, SMTR MD
to Relative (NOR)
I find that I can't even get close.
with the pre-amp off it fall right into spec. as per the manual, with the
SMTR MD set to Nor
I am using the XG2, and receiving on 20 mtrs.
with SMTR MD set to Abs and with the pre-amp on it falls right into spec..
am I missing something ? or is the manual in error..

The manual is correct, and has always worked for me. In fact, I just ran
the calibration on four S-meters (two main K3 receivers and two KRX3s).
 The
instructions also call for AGC-S ON and SMTR PK OFF with the XG2 signal in
 the middle of your passband.

Re: [Elecraft] 6 meters

2008-12-23 Thread K7WIA

I replaced my 6 meter station ( Orion O2 + Elecraft XV50 ) with the K3.
I find that in my city location that the K3 is equal to the old set up. I do
have the PR6 preamp but I find that I do not need it as the one in the K3 is
just fine. living in the city the background noise is S3 - S4 most of the
time..when the rains come it drops to S2..unless you live way out in the
country and no noise you should not need the PR6 as all it will do is raise
the noise floor
don't forget that the skip on 6 meters can be quite selective, I have
observed that stations 5 miles away from me can work station that I can not
hear and a bit later I will be working them and the other station won't hear
them..
I have a 5 MHZ crystal reference that I use the 10th harmonic for
calibration at 50 Mhz and use it for a weak signal reference.. there is
very little difference between the 2 station set ups..
you need to set it up to be able to switch between the 2 radios and compare
at the same time.. if the K3 is weak contact Elecraft support...
