If Randy would like to keep the K2 the Temperature Compensated PLL Reference Upgrade Kit (item #E850138 for $24.95) is still listed on the order form for K2 Revision A to B Upgrade page. The information for that mod also suggests installation of the BFO mod kit (item BFOMDKT for $10.95) and a firmware update if the K2 has a firmware version less than v2.0. Those are relatively inexpensive upgrades and worth doing to improve the K2 if Randy doesn't want to go the full A/B upgrade path right away. I found out first hand a number of years ago that a device that has type approval in the US can still spew a lot of unwanted RF. Better to have some approval process but it would be better if the specs were much more strict. I worked for a company that had a pair of transceiver devices used in real-time data collection. The devices had FCC type approval but failed to pass the UK type approval process. I couldn't believe what I saw when I put the devices on a spectrum analyzer. The main oscillators operating in the 27MHz and 49MHz ranges had harmonics galore up in to the gigahertz range. It made me wonder if the original designer ever checked the devices with an SA. I was able to fix the problem for both devices with trivial changes and the devices then passed the UK approval process. The FCC (or was it ARRL) is doing a study/survey about the increasing noise floor in the RF spectrum. [Elecraft] Problem with KAT2?
Greetings, all. For some time I've suspected my K2 of being partially deaf (ie. not as sensitive as it should be). I bought an XG3 a while ago and finally sat down to check my K2. I set up the K2 following the XG3 manual. Volume control set to was slightly before 12 o'clock so I had maximum volume possible before there was audible distortion heard in the speaker, I used a 400Hz filter as I don't have a 500Hz one set up, and I removed the KAT2. I took measurements at the speaker terminals with the speaker disconnect as the volume was quite loud with the speaker connected. On 40m, S+N was 532mV and N was 19.2mV for a receive sensitivity of -135.7dBm (approximately). I installed the KAT2, tuned in to a dummy load on ANT1 that measured 51ohms on an ohmmeter, and set the KAT2 to calS mode. I ran the test again without changing any controls from the first test. The speaker volume was only 55mV, about 1/10th what it was without the KAT2. Calculated senstivity was around -128dBm. Sensitivity seems a bit lower with the KAT2. Perhaps I should have upped the volume setting but I thought I should try and do a more direct comparison to the bare K2. Center conductor of ANT1 to KAT2 output is only 1 ohm so there is nothing obviously wrong at DC levels. I don't like the 10 fold drop in speaker volume with the KAT2 installed with all other things being equal. Is this considered normal or is this an indication of a problem in my KAT2? Any thoughts what to look for if this 10 fold drop in output is not normal? -- Cheers! I have a KAF2 and it is a nice device to have that has little impact on the current drain from the batteries. That is important to me because my K2 is almost always running off it's internal battery. The only DSP unit I have used with a radio is a JPS NIR-10 outboard DSP unit which I used with a Yaesu FT-890. With some noise it did such a good job you had to look at the radio to see if it was still on. With steady tones it worked a treat. CW would turn in to just clicks and all those people tuning up on wouldn't be noticed other than by a slight reduction in the level of the signal you were listening to (due to the IF reacting to the tuner upper). I found it was worth buying the DSP unit. Having the noise reduced (substantially on higher bands), makes ragchew or long periods of listening much more pleasant. During net operations, or while trying to bag that rare (DX) station you need for the log, multi-notch filtering really helps save ones ears from the tuner-uppers. The KDSP2 unit would be handy if you find your operating could benefit from what it can offer for just the cost of a slight increase in current draw. Being built in to the radio, it will always be there if you go portable. An external DSP has the advantage of being usable with other radios but would be complicates things when it comes to having to get power for it during times of portable operation. -- Cheers! Re: [Elecraft] International shipping costs

UPS does seem to handle customs clearance and they make you pay for it if you don't have your own clearance broker. Last time (several years ago) I had something sent from US to Canada via UPS they wanted to hit me up for $45 in fees. I refused the item and had it reshipped via USPS. UPS may be a faster way to get something than if it was shipped via the local post office but if the parcel crosses a border you have to be aware you may be in for an additional fee from UPS related to customs clearance. -- Cheers!
