Re: [Elecraft] OT: Pigremote availability

2018-01-04 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Tim,
Just saw your other message direct to me. I'll reply here for anyone else
that may be curious.

I have all of the individual components that go into making a PigRemote
except for a pretty important one, the audio codec board. When I first
designed PR I decided to not put the audio codec, and it's related
circuitry, directly on the PR motherboard for certain reasons I'll spare
you the details of. The price for manufacturing that board has gone up
drastically since I last ordered, probably because I always deal in
relatively small quantities and board fab shops like to address something
called a burden rate when accepting jobs.

I'm not sure when I'll have that critical component so I can't make any
guarantees on when I might be able to get one to you. It'd probably be
faster to ask this group if anyone has one for sale. The PR was primarily
designed to interface with the K3 and KX3 so there should be more than a
handful out there. Whether or the owners want to part with them, not
sure. :)

On a side note, I do have a prototype PR that works with the K3 USB
connection and it's the size of a deck of cards. I should revisit that to
see about making it a product offering.

For PackTenna, George (KJ6VU), the other half (more like 9/10ths) of

Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod vs Pigknob (was Re: [Elecraft_K3] New Elecraft Product: K-Pod Control Panel for K3S and K3 Transceivers)

2016-04-14 Thread Nick Garner
The K-Pod has a vastly superior encoder and knob compared to the PigKnob.
Using the same encoder as the K3 in the PigKnob wasn't economically
feasible at the low quantities I deal with. There is a header on the board
though for enterprising individuals who want to connect the K3 encoder
(purchased from Elecraft) to the PigKnob.

Hisashi, send an email over to supp...@pignology.net if you run into issues

Re: [Elecraft] pig knob for B vfo

2015-03-09 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Bob,
You can alter the commands that are sent when the knob encoder pulses so you
could use UPB and DNB to control VFO B.  Since the knob has two modes, toggled
between with a push of the knob, you could have one of the modes control VFO A
and the other control VFO B.

The commands to configure the knob to accomplish this would be:

cw up;
cc dn;

fcw upb;
fcc dnb;

Re: [Elecraft] Pig Knob

2014-10-05 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Ted,
On the back of the P3 are two 9-pin serial ports, labeled PC and XCVR. You
would connected the Knob to the PC port of the P3 and then the XCVR port of
the P3 to the K3. The P3 will proxy the serial data between the Knob and
the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 & Pigknob

2014-10-03 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Sid,
Thank you for confirming that it works. I think the second part is a
question for the Elecraft folks.

Elecraft,
If the KX3 is manipulated with the UP/DN commands via the serial port, is
that reflected to the PX3 in the same way that a VFO knob turn on the KX3
does?

Hi Sid,
You can daisy chain them, similar to the KXPA100. Connect the knob to the
PX3 ACC1 PC port. Then the PX3 ACC1 XCVR port to the KX3 ACC1 port.

Re: [Elecraft] Logging software advice

2014-07-02 Thread Nick Garner
Nobody ever mentions HamLog for Mac. :)

To answer some questions directed at me about the Piglet with HamLog on
iOS...

(1) Can it fetch the frequency in use from the rig (K2 or KX3)?
Yes.
(2) Can it enter a frequency from the iPad?
Yes. For K3 and KX3 it actually puts the whole face of the radio to iPad.
(3) Can it send CW or PSK31 from the iPad?
Yes, it's via keyboard though and only what the radio decodes, no waterfall
or decode via audio (yet).

Re: [Elecraft] Logging software advice

2014-06-30 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Phil,
The Piglet creates a wireless network out of the box. It is possible to
reconfigure the Piglet to join a home wireless network or a hotspot network
created by a mobile device. When using it with iOS it's also possible to
reconfigure the Piglet to create an ad-hoc wireless network allowing for
simultaneous Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity for rig control and callsign
lookups. This reconfiguration can be done with a null modem adapter or
cable.

smartphones and tablets.
Piglet - A device that enables your radio to be operated from smartphones
and tablets while in the field.

user-defined macros.
CT-17 Adapter - For use with Icom radios and the Piglet.

Shop:

It was a great show and it was nice to meet everyone who stopped by. See

Re: [Elecraft] K3/P3 and Pigknob

2013-11-18 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Bill,
I know of a few folks using the knob with both the P3 and K3. The only
issue I'm aware of is if you want to program a P3 macro into one of the
programmable knob push buttons you have to prefix the command with a
semi-colon. For example, if you wanted to send the P3 command to set the
span to 50 kHZ, "#SPN000500;" you'd have to program the PK button to
";#SPN000500;",
note the leading semi-colon. I wasn't able to work out why this is but it
works. This is only a problem for commands going to the P3, button macros
going through the P3 to the K3 don't need this semi-colon prefix.

I'll drop your knob in the mail tomorrow.  Also, I do full-refund returns;
if you feel it's not for you just let me know.

Re: [Elecraft] Default tuning rate on the Pigknob

2013-06-10 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Howard,
There isn't a command to change the rate that the encoder built into the K3
operates, what we can do is send a command to the radio to move the VFO
frequency up or down at different distances from the current frequency.

When the PigKnob encoder pulses, the microcontroller first determines which
direction the knob is spinning, then consults EEPROM to get the configured
command to be sent and then writes those characters out the serial port to
the radio. The knob has two states, normal tuning and alternate tuning.
The factory config will send the "UP;" command for clockwise and "DN;"
command for counter-clockwise. When the knob is toggled into the alternate
tuning mode, by depressing the knob once, the default commands sent are
"UP4;" and "DN4;". The 4 in these commands tells the radio how far it
should move up or down, "4" is 1 kHz. When there is no number defined, it
will move 10 Hz.

All four of these commands are configurable. The K3 Programmer's Reference
says that the command "DNn;" and "UPn;" has options for "n" defined as:
0=1 Hz; 1 or not used=10 Hz; 2=20 Hz; 3=50 Hz; 4=1 kHz; 5=2 kHz; 6=3 kHz;
7=5 kHz; 8=100 Hz; 9=200 Hz
Following these specifications if you wanted to have the clockwise encoder
pulse move the VFO up 5 kHz, for example, you would send the "UP7;" command.

To address your question, if you wanted the default tuning state to move
up/down 1 kHz per pulse of the encoder and you wanted the alternate state
to move RIT up or down, the following configuration commands would
accomplish that.

cw UP4;
cc DN4;
fcw RU;
fcc RD;

Re: [Elecraft] Pigknob

2013-05-22 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Brian,
I replied to your email a couple hours later, on Feb 1st at 15:02 PST.
Perhaps it got filtered, there were quite a few emails in that thread and
the subject had [OT] in it.

Here are the relevant excerpts.
--
Original:
I'm trying to think of whether there would be any interaction with a K3
attached to LPBRIDGE. The LPBRIDGE creates up to 5 virtual serial ports
and it essentially runs K3 the via the one real RS232 port. It polls as
typically at 200 ms. The virtual ports are use by a logging program, the
SKIMMER decoder/or ROCKY panadapter, and separate digital mode program(s).
All must be run at the 38.4 baud rate.

I suppose, one would connect this device in the RS232 line. Would there be
a problem with this?
--
Reply:
The question about where to put the knob; I imagine it could either go into
another serial port that LP Bridge manages or in-line. If LP Bridge is
sending data that fast, there would be contention if the knob is interacted
with while LP Bridge was talking through the knob.
--

To add to that reply from back then, if the knob were connected in-line
with the computer and K3, as data comes into the knob from the computer, it
is immediately sent out the other port, byte for byte, unaltered. The same
occurs in the other direction, from radio to computer. If a button is
pushed on the knob, the entire text of that macro is immediately sent out
to the radio. If LP Bridge can use another physical port, then you could
connect the Knob's rig port to a physical port on the computer and let LP
Bridge manage the communication from knob to radio.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: [Elecraft] Pigknob

2013-05-22 Thread Nick Garner
Something I discovered at Dayton is I probably shouldn't have called that
switched mode in the encoder Fast Tuning Mode. I should have called it
Alternate Tuning Mode or something similar.

I was asked several times, "Can I tune RIT with this?" After the third
person asked, we tried it. Every switch/function on the knob is
configurable including the commands that are sent when the encoder pulses.
The fast tuning mode is toggled on/off with a push of the knob to activate
the switch built into the encoder. We changed the fast clockwise command
to RIT Up (RU;) and the fast counter-clockwise command to RIT Down (RD;)
and then we configured one of the push buttons for RIT Clear (RC;). In one
tuning state VFO A would tune up/down, when the push button in the knob was
pressed to toggle to the alternate state, we could tune RIT up/down and at
anytime could push the RIT Clear button to reset the RIT offset.

Re: [Elecraft] iPad as wired remote for Elecraft rig?

2013-05-13 Thread Nick Garner
Hello Everyone,
When I first started work on Pigtail, the original plan was to make it a
wired accessory. With the assistance of a lawyer (required) I went through
the whole licensing and NDA process to make approved hardware and the very
first prototype was working on the bench a couple months later. It plugged
into the 30 pin connector on iOS devices. As I got deeper into the
process, unless I was making thousands of them it just wouldn't be feasible
without the cable costing a lot of money. I switched over to Bluetooth
which is also restricted when it comes to serial data and found many of the
same roadblocks. I eventually went with WiFi because it's universal and
there's no licensing restrictions. When first considering WiFi I thought,
"But... there's not going to be WiFi on top of the mountain..." The wifi
module I'm using can operate independently of any wireless networks so that
problem went away and off I went. And with the switch from the 30-pin
connector to Lightning on iOS devices, I'm pretty happy I did.

I'm giving a talk at Dayton later this week on the process I took and
mistakes I made when going through the process of making Pigtail. A large
portion (and goal) of the talk is how to DIY for anyone who wants to make
something like this themselves.

Re: [Elecraft] 4-pound Field Day, anyone?

2013-04-26 Thread Nick Garner
On the HamLog note, it does have a Field Day logger built in.

It's coming close to the time for me to get any changes into that part of
the app to make sure they're live before the event. If anyone has any
suggestions on things to change, please send them directly to me and I'll
try to get them in there. I recently made a few changes to the dup checker
to make it more proactive and added the new Ontario sections. Also, it
does work with Piglet/KX3 for automated mode/freq logging.

I happily give out Promo Codes for the app, so if anyone wants a free copy,
let me know.

[Elecraft] [OT] K3UI and KX3UI for Windows

2013-03-22 Thread Nick Garner
Hello Everyone,
Since I released KX3UI for Mac a couple months ago, I've received several
requests for something similar on Windows. I've just published the first
versions of these two applications. They include support for
Piglet/PigRemote as well for wireless/remote control.

You can see KX3UI in use in the PigRemote First Look video at the following
URL if you're interested.
http://youtu.be/tiRyn-H-_lk?t=6m09s

The software can be installed from here:
http://pignology.net/winapps.html

I'm a big fan of improving software so if you give it a test and have some
feedback, please email me directly at n...@pignology.net and I'd be happy
to do what I can to make the software better.

73,
Nick
N3WG

P.S. For the Mac users, K3UI for Mac OSX is just about done, it should show
up in the Mac App Store in a few weeks.

[Elecraft] [OT] 4G Coverage at Dayton?

2013-03-17 Thread Nick Garner
Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know which, if any, nationwide cell service provider has the
best 4G coverage inside Hara Arena? I need to run a mobile hotspot inside
the arena for a demo and would like to get a hotspot from the provider with
the best coverage.

Thank you and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] I made a knob, a PigKnob.

2013-02-10 Thread Nick Garner
Hi everyone,
Going wireless, adding the transceivers, would increase the cost quite a
bit and power has to be figured out. Some day, perhaps.

I have received many suggestions from folks who have seen the video and a
lot is going to change. Once the next prototype is built, I'll put up a new
video.

Thank you to everyone who sent me feedback and I apologize that I wasn't
able to reply to all of them. They were all read and you might see your
suggestion in the next video.

[Elecraft] [OT] I made a knob, a PigKnob.

2013-02-01 Thread Nick Garner
Hello Everyone,
A few weeks ago there was a thread on here about a remote tuning knob.
This topic has come up every now and then on the mailing lists out there
and it's something I've wanted to try to make for a while. I got back the
prototype boards yesterday, soldered on the parts, loaded my firmware into
the microcontroller and hacked up the enclosure to make it all fit.

I made a demo video of it yesterday. It can be viewed here:
http://youtu.be/bqBU2L8rbyw

It works great with a K3 as well. I was going to use that in the video but
my long serial cable has walked off.

I'd be happy to hear any feedback, even if it's just, "I'd be interested in
one." I need to gauge demand before pulling the trigger on making it.
Please email me directly to avoid filling the reflector with an OT
discussion.

[Elecraft] Fwd: iSDR app and KX3 not working

2012-12-29 Thread Nick Garner
Howdy Folks,
Just a quick note on the comments from Buck. Pigtail works with HamLog to
allow an iOS or Android device to act as a CW/DATA terminal (along with all
the other stuff it does) with no waterfall. Pigtail/Pignology is not
associated with the iSDR application. I think it'd be pretty neat if the
author of iSDR wanted to integrate the Pigtail connectivity into his app to
gather the frequency automatically but I haven't approached him about it.

[Elecraft] [OT] Remoting HRD via EtherPig Demo

2012-10-08 Thread Nick Garner
Hello Everyone,
I've released several updates to EtherPig including a Windows server and
client in the past week and it's coming out of closed beta in time for
Pacificon.

Yesterday I put together a demo of remoting a K3 using Ham Radio Deluxe.
You can take a look at it here: http://youtu.be/ebtqacEkT4I

EtherPig is still in beta and will be for a while but it's open for testing
for anyone interested. Head over to
http://EtherPig.com to
get started.

On a side note, if you'll be at Pacificon, I'll be in a booth next to the
HamStack folks and will have all of this running including remoting
audio/rig control via iPad/iPhone. Pigtail will be there as well. Feel
free to stop by and say hi!

[Elecraft] [OT] Pigtail Rig Control with Android and Mac

2012-09-06 Thread Nick Garner
Hello Everyone,
I've added support for Pigtail into HamLog on Android and Mac. The Android
update (v4.0) has support for Elecraft (KX3, K3, K2) and Yaesu (FT-8X7's).
The update for Mac has all the same Pigtail functionality that you see in
the iOS version of HamLog (Elecraft, Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood) including the
KX3 user interface and CW Terminal.

Here's a demo of the Mac update with Pigtail and KX3:
http://youtu.be/6XZXxzuKCjM
The Mac update will be in the Mac App Store in a few days.

Here's a demo video of Pigtail with a KX3 and an EVO 3D cell phone running
Android ICS, all on batteries:
http://youtu.be/5xoURF-WPPA
This Android update is in the Play Store (Market) now.

If you're a user of HamLog on any of the platforms it's available for and
would like to see something added, please send me an email at
n...@pignology.net. I'm always happy to get new features added.

73,
Nick
N3WG

P.S. EtherPig is pretty much ready to go. I made a 70 cm QSO with it the
other day: http://youtu.be/ETbaqQCsgu0. It should be ready for general use
around the time of Pacificon.

[Elecraft] [OT] Remoting with iPad/iPhone - Testers Needed

2012-08-10 Thread Nick Garner
Howdy Folks,
I'm N3WG, the HamLog/Pigtail guy. Something I've been asked for often, and
something I've wanted to do for a while, is get bi-directional audio built
into HamLog on iOS devices. Over the past week I've got it working to
where I have rig control of a radio at home with audio streaming for both
TX and RX, no Skype needed. The first implementation of the software that
runs at home with your radio is in the form of a Mac App.

I have a demo video of it up here with a K3 and KX3:
http://youtu.be/2pWIGSrwHwU

I will be needing additional testers (about 5) in about 2 weeks. If you
have a Mac computer and an iPhone and/or iPad and would like to help out,
please visit http://etherpig.com and enter your email in the newsletter
form. If you're not comfortable entering your email address in the
website, feel free to email me directly and I'll add you to my list.

[Elecraft] [OT] Radio Control via HamLog on iPhone

2012-02-14 Thread Nick Garner
Hello Everyone,
Over the years that HamLog (http://goo.gl/BMFzM) has been available on
the various mobile platforms out there, I've had several users ask me
for a way to get radio information into the app automatically, both at
home and/or out in the field, portable, dxpeditions, etc.  In the past
few weeks I've put something together that allows HamLog to talk to
radios for both command & control and state retrieval.  Below is a
link to a demo of it working with an iPad and a K3. The video should
answer a lot of the questions you might have.  This is all entirely
beta at the moment so it might not look like this in the first
release.

Demo Video (about 9 minutes):
http://goo.gl/N8JK7

Take a look and let me know what you think!  If you're interested in
having one, please visit the following URL and enter your call sign
and email address.  There is no obligation and I'm not asking for any
type of deposit; I just need to gauge the demand for the initial run.

Interest Registration:
http://pignology.net/ptainterest

I envision a KX3 stashed in a backpack (HF Pack style) being fully
controlled by an iOS/Android device while walking down the trail, all
the while logging the contacts you're making.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 transport box ?

2011-10-21 Thread Nick Garner
Hi Erwin,
I use a Pelican 1510 . It's
made to be a carrry-on for travel with wheels and a retractable tow handle.
I had to remove the handle from the K3 to get it to fit. I don't miss that
handle though.

Here's a picture of it:
http://i.imgur.com/YbHHL.jpg

That's a Gamma Research power supply (
http://www.gammaresearch.net/hps-1a.html) on the left and I put everything
else (mic, key, cables, etc.) in the open area on the right. I was forced to
gate check it one time and it made it through with just a few scratches;
works great for me.

[Elecraft] Random Wire from KAT2

2009-10-29 Thread Nick Garner
Howdy Folks,
I usually run my KX1 like this , with wire straight
off the antenna connector using the internal tuner. I've had my K2 for
about 8 years now and I'd like to add the internal tuner. Is anyone running
wire straight off the KAT2 antenna connectors when portable or can you see
any problems with doing this with the KAT2?

Thank you and 73,
Nick

Re: [Elecraft] IPhone apps: remote control of K3, etc.?

2009-06-30 Thread Nick Garner
Thank you, Weymouth.

I'm given a limited amount of promotional codes to give away HamLog for
free. To give back to the Elecraft community that has served us all so well
over the years, I'd be happy to give away the software to the first ten
iPhone owners who reply direct.

The codes expire after four weeks and are worthless without an iPhone so
please only request a promo code if you have an iPhone.
