See https://www.ridgeequipment.com/store/dummyloads.html. If ever you run into a problem, the first check is to see what happens when you transmit into a dummy load. That removes many variables - like RFI problems and antenna problems. It is the first check I recommend. If the rig works into the dummy load, you need to look for the problem somewhere other than the rig. I have had rigs sent to me for repair only to find that there is nothing wrong. The resulting repair charge is greater than the cost of a good dummy load. If you look for one at a hamfest, take your ohmmeter along to check if it is still a 50 ohm load - some are burned out from excessive power. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/24/2015 3:25 PM, Tony Estep wrote: Well, now I downloaded the new firmware, only to discover that I have to do the 50W calibration. I've never seen a Power Pole crimper -- all of mine are soldered. I find them very easy to do, once you understand how they work. Inside each plastic housing is a spring. The contacts have a sort of curled lip that is intended to fit over that spring, which locks it in position. The contact must be inserted so that the curl is in the right direction, and it must be pushed all the way to the spring. Usually you will hear a click when that happens. For small diameter wire, I often must use a small screw driver (like the miniature Xcelite Red or Green) to push the contact from the wire side of the housing. For large diameter wire, it may be necessary to strip a bit more insulation so that it fits into the housing. The only times I find it difficult to install a Power Pole is when I'm using #10 wire, which requires the largest of the three sizes of contacts (the type with the U-shaped holder for the wire). The wire must be very carefully tinned, inserted very carefully, and the U-shaped holder carefully folded over so that it fits into the housing. I do this with a pair of needlenose pliers. A crimper might make that easier. The only times I've had Power Poles disconnect were when the DC cable for one of my K3s was too short, and I pulled the radio forward. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to w1...@earthlink.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

What I have not been able to find out is whether an IRC purchased in country A (e.g. Canada) and sent to country B (e.g. some DX entity that's part of the international postal union) can be used in country B to pay for return QSL postage from B to country C (the USA) - that is, a country other than the one where the IRC was purchased. I submit that electronic logging, with automatic upload to services like LOTW, Clublog, QRZ and getting a near immediate return confirmation results in one huge benefit... I can get back to operating quicker to make more contacts (be it DX, a contest or a ragchew). It's simply a more efficient use of time, sometimes in places where time and numbers matter (like contests). It allows me to do more of what I want to do, operate. I also use a remotely controlled station, automatic antenna tuner and antenna switch and an instant on amplifier. I started with much less and I enjoy the reduced load on me so I can focus on different things and enjoy them more. I know I can manage with less but have no desire to return to my earlier stations. I look at it as combining my interests (and toys like computers, networks, radios) into ways that make things both complex to set up (any modern radio), but easier to use once that is completed. It has allowed me to do some super cool things such as having my morning cuppa while watching the sunrise on an Alaskan volcano while participating in the local 'old guy' net at home, several thousand miles away, thanks to the new technology I use. (I bluetooth audio to a laptop or iOS device and use the remote control features of my home station from the same device.) I can go back to old school, but at what cost in this example? In fairness, the 'new' method of logging and QSL isn't as elegant or personal as receiving a hand written card, akin to texting instead of mail or a phone call compared to email. I get that. But with the limited time we have in this place, I'll take the fun over the tedious. I'll leave the personal touches for the contact itself and hopefully recontact that station on several band/modes to develop a relationship over time. 73 es Happy Christmas, Rick, WA6NHC iPad = small keypad = typos = sorry ;-) On Dec 8, 2014, at 5:17 AM, G4GNX g4...@theatreorgans.co.uk wrote: Stan. Finally I have 98% of what I had working under XP. It took an estimated 80 hours of work and cost in excess of $500. Admittedly, I'm on the low knowledge end of OS stuff (and maybe in the majority of ham users in that regard). The most difficult parts were: 1) Device drivers. Trial and error process. 2) Sound card problems. It's a zoo. 3) Networking (it takes 15 at first unknown steps in several pull down boxes to do what a single click in XP used to do) I still have one unresolved issue with the motherboard sound. It simply won't output anything via line out. I'm almost convinced that the sound out hardware is bad. It's quite possible on the refurbed machine that the previous owner clobbered the hardware. WIN7 seems a bit flaky in sound card stuff. It isn't a trivial process unless you're just interested in E-mail, Internet browsing and a few spreadsheet programs. IMO, since the demise of Al Kahn, Ten Tec has been sliding downhill. Since Al's departure, Ten Tec really has not produced anything new or innovative. I still have three Omni 6+ rigs and one of the Corsair II, both of which I think have excellent receivers. I owned a couple of their amplifiers and they were both good and reliable. I now own an Alpha 9500 which is proving to be a real workhorse amp. I am fortunate since switching from the Alpha 8510, which was troublesome, to the 9500 , to not really have to utilize their tech support again. Ten Tec's tech support was what I would call less than stellar but you eventually could get some help from them. My impression, especially now with Elecraft available, Ten Tec was slowly sliding down the hill. With Alpha showing very slow design capability, in terms of their automatic tuner, they are not very attractive either. Both companies probably could be excellent for the hobby IF they could acquire some management who were capable of looking forward. I just hope we don't lose either one of them! 73, Tom - W4BQF -Original Message- From: cw...@yahoogroups.com [mailto:cw...@yahoogroups.com] Sent: Monday, May 12, 2014 12:11 PM To: cw...@yahoogroups.com Subject: [cwops] merger of Alpha and Ten Tec I'm still on the fence about this one. I have owned both companies' products. I had a Ten-Tec OMNI D, two Centurions, and a Titan. I still own an Alpha 87A. In the early 1980s, when I bought the Ten-Tec OMNI D I thought it was a very good transceiver. With regard to my amplifiers, though, the Titan and one of the Centurions both developed power transformer shorts and it was expensive to fix them. I have had very good service, so far, from my Alpha 87A. But...I'm not so sure the 9500 is an improvement over the 87A, or so I've heard. The 87A uses pin diodes and is relatively quiet. The 9500 uses relays and is relatively noisy. Both use vacuum tubes. From my perspective (opinion, not necessarily fact), Elecraft is the most innovative ham company; and SPE has succeeded in designing the 2K-FA solid-state amplifier that has nearly a 5 out of 5 eham rating. In my perfect ham world, Elecraft would make a 1.5 KW solid-state KPA-500-like amplifier. My station would become a K3/P3 and 1.5 KW all Elecraft station (actually a pair in SO2R). I'm not sure Elecraft will make that 1.5 KW amplifier. So, it's a question about whether a pair of K-lines in SO2R would be sufficient for me. There is also the possibility that I would get a 2K-FA (W9KNI loves his). So, getting back to the merger, I'm sure it makes economic sense to merge...but I'm not so sure I would consider it a marriage of two companies who have been and continue to be state-of-the-art ham product makers. You may see it differently, of course, and that's what makes things interesting. 73, Rob K6RB PS: See you in Dayton ! ; __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to w1...@earthlink.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

There is a market for a 1,000 or 1,500 watt Solid State Amp, with Autotuner, that covers 160 through 6 and doesn't cost $10 Grand. You could sell a lot of them if they were priced at $4K or under.
