Re: [Elecraft] K3 External Frequency Reference Questions
Dave I installed one about the time they were released, it was a pain free exercise, plug an external 10Mhz in and it worked, unplug it and it falls back to the internal reference. The whole exercise has proved invaluable for external microwave transverters as well as the internal 2M module which is now locked. I built a 10Mhz reference based on the VE2ZAZ design ( http://ve2zaz.net/GPS_Std/GPS_Std.htm ) and used it to reference my test equipment, frequency counter, signal generator as well as the K3, my shack is basically GPS reference locked.. It is a GPS locked reference, a little slow to lock, about 5 mins but rock solid when locked (I never turn it off). Bert VE2ZAZ also had a design for a station clock based on the GPS receiver, now this is one of the best things I have ever built. I also have Rubidium standard but rarely use it for anything, it draws a lot of current, particularly at start up. The only warning I have ever seen about radiation was from spectratime ( http://www.spectratime.com/uploads/hazmat331.pdf ) and I doubt it is an issue for anyone. The lamps lose efficiency as they age as well and some of the older ones on EBay are getting to the age where they are marginal. If you decide to build one I am sure there are lot of folks who have done just that and can assist you, I would be happy to share my construction experiences off list with you. Regards. Roger VK3ADE. -Original Message- Subject: [Elecraft] K3 External Frequency Reference Questions Hi All, I'm interested in possibly trying the K3EXREF in my good ol' K3 for no good reason other than its something new and fun to try and can give some bragging rights about frequency accuracy. Can any of you comment on your experiences in using the K3EXREF? Elecraft provides very little background info on how to get started with this accessory after its installation. I see that the once prolific Trimble Thunderbolt units are now quite scarce on eBay and elsewhere those that are available are now really pricey. What are any of you now using if you went the GPS disciplined oscillator route? Have any of you used a rubidium standard as the alternative? This may sound naive, but is a rubidium standard device safe to have at home, i.e. is it radioactive? I think I know the answer but I want to ask anyway. With a toddler grandson around here often I want to be very safe and very certain. Any suggestions as to how to proceed, encountered pitfalls and sourcing a reasonably priced frequency standard would be greatly welcome. I thank you all in advance. 73 de N1LQ-Dave __ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR needs improvement
I live in a high noise environment for 40 and 80m and find I can never get a useful result with the noise reduction on the K3, subsequently I never use it. I find that my other rigs finish up far more comfortable to listen to on these frequencies where noise is prevalent. In an otherwise excellent radio this is a major disappointment, I might be wrong but most of the software effort seems devoted to the KX3 so I am not expecting any change soon. 73 Roger VK3ADE. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A Not Responding message
Dick For it to lock your computer totally it is usually a problem in the driver area and I would suspect a problem with the USB to RS232 interface if that is what you are using. I know proper RS232 ports are rare these days but you may consider a PCI express type RS232 port. After some frustration with similar problems over the years I have made them go away by not using the USB to RS232 solutions, some of them just seem a little sensitive to RF despite common mode chokes. [Elecraft] K3 - Microphone Connector
This is a question about the K3 Microphone connector, is it correct to assume that the UP and DOWN operations are achieved by momentarily grounding the pins the corresponding pins? Secondly there is a pin designated FUNCTION, I cannot see any description of the purpose of this pin in the manual, can someone enlighten me as to what this pin is used for. [Elecraft] K3 - Transverters
Hi to All. I have a K3 with several transverters attached, two of which are Elecraft 144 and 432 models, the others are generic. I have used this configuration for over 12 months and in this period had not upgraded the firmware in the K3 (it weren't broke). Early this week I did upgrade and found the K3 would not turn on or respond until I removed the connection between the K3 and the Elecraft transverters. I have since discovered that if there is no power to the transverters the K3 will not turn on, if there is power then all acts normally, it seems to be an issue with I2C type bus between the K3 and the transverters. It's no big deal, I just have to ensure there is power on the transverters all of the time. My questions are (In the hope some Elecraft engineers or other clever folk read this) 1: Is this unique to my configuration? 2: Was the firmware change by design or as a consequence of supporting other devices on the bus? Re: [Elecraft] [W2} Elecraft W2 Interface program (Ver 1.1.4.12)
David You can download the application from www.remoterig.com. Without a USB key you will not get it going but it will demonstrate the problem. The problem is that the remoterig ports have nothing to connect to until their application is actually running so anyone that polls their virtual ports will simply hang. Probably the best and fastest solution is simply allow your user to select a comport rather than you trying to help by polling for a W2, the remote rig people could also help by modifying their virtual port drivers. I then started your application and it came up just fine, so I now know why your application hung. I assume you application is enumerating the com ports at start up and possibly trying to open them, it hits the virtual ports and hangs, Regards. Roger VK3ADE. To unhide this folder (and others), open the Folder Options in the Vista Control Panel, and on the “View” tab, change the option to “show hidden files and folders”, and click ok. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)
Doug The crystals originally supplied by Elecraft for the 2m Transverter were stamped 116.01Mhz so they were always going to be problematic and off frequency. The ones they replaced the originals with were also 116.01MHz and I really don't know why they were sent unless it was a mistake. maybe some one from Elecraft could comment. Given the distance you are off frequency I would suggest you have similar crystals, by memory there was not offset adjustment available to correct for the frequency error. Ireplaced them with a locally sourced crystal of 116.0Mhz and the transverter came up right on frequency. Regards. I have the Crystal Oven option installed, so would have to take things apart to see the crystal markings. In the manual it says: Y1 Crystal, 116 MHz 5th Overtone Series Resonant (116.000) Did the ones Elecraft sent you have (116.000) stamped on them? (144MHz input = 116MHz LO + 28MHz IF) Was it the accuracy of the Elecraft crystal parts that was questionable, or were the markings/parts wrong? Hopefully Elecraft will check their crystals for the XV144 and comment before I need to start taking things apart. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)
Doug Check the frequency stamped on the crystal, mine was the wrong frequency and gave the exact same problem, I requested a new one and it was also the wrong frequency. In the end I obtained a high stability crystal locally and it came up exactly on frequency. I don't know if Elecraft was aware of this but at the time it was very frustrating. Re: [Elecraft] USB to serial angst
Totally agree, a direct Ethernet connection would open a world of possibilities, remote operation without a remote PC and also remove the driver dependencies that plague the USB to serial arena. I suspect it will not be long before we see it on the mainstream manufacturers equipment. Regards. Roger VK3ADE. S Sacco wrote: Great debate, but perhaps misplaced?
