[Elecraft] Practicing using my new Vizkey 90 deg bug.

2017-12-29 Thread Steve Nielsen
I have never used a bug before trying my new Christmas preent, a Vizkey 90
degre bug.  It is very different than anything else I have tried, but it is fun
and is a welcome addition to my collection.  I like to use a different key each
day.  I have my favorites too, a begali Blade, a begali HST, begali Traveler,
Vibroplex speed racer, SKCC straight key by LNR, and some others.  Now, I will
add a bug to the rotation.
I hope that we can work each other on the air sometime.

Re: [Elecraft] Modifying the K2 for use as an IF radio for the microwave bands

2017-12-18 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
There's been several good points made about my K2 internal 2m transverter
project...here's a bit of my thinking about why I went the way I did:

(1) Using an alternate transverter (VE3SYB) - I did consider the Transverters
Unlimited board from the Ukraine to potentially give me more output, but in any
case it would require some modification to reduce the output from several watts
to 100 mW. In the end, since I had acquired the quasi-DEMI transverter at a
flea market already, I decided just to go with it.

I think it would be pushing the state-of-the-art in high-level mixer technology
to make a mixer which would directly take ~ 1 watt in and produce 100 mW out at
144 MHz, without either pre-attenuation or post-amplification, but it might
just be possible.

(2) Using the K60XV transverter interface (W3FPR) - I thought about that option
and eventually decided against it, primarily because of the extreme sensitivity
of the K60XV output to RF signals getting into it and causing the K2 receiver
to shut down (an odd quirk of the circuitry and firmware). Using a modified
version is an interesting possibility which didn't occur to me - maybe enough
space could be freed up to build a filter or buffer amp on the original board
to fix that problem! I do have a K60XV in my other K2 which I have used with
good results on 50/144/222/432 MHz, but it does require an external filter on
the output RF jack to prevent weirdness from happening when other nearby
transmitters are active!

(3) K1WHS interface (K1WHS) - I suspect this is much the same as what DEMI made
for a while before the K60XV came out (and it was much cheaper than the K60XV,
too). N2CEI was nice enough to give me one after they stopped producing them.
I tried it but decided I missed the full Elecraft-style front panel RF power
control which it did not support. I recall Dave telling me years ago that the
K2 made a pretty good IF radio, so it's been in my mind since then! I can
confirm that I too get a group of strong birdies near 145.1 MHz, but as I am
using 144.1 MHz as my IF this is not a problem for me.

(4) Internal 630m transverter (KE6US) - sounds like a great project! For 2200m,
maybe not, as one might want better frequency accuracy in such a narrow band
than the K2 can provide.

[Elecraft] Modifying the K2 for use as an IF radio for the microwave bands

2017-12-18 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
For a while now I've been working on a project to install a low power 2 metre
transverter inside an Elecraft K2, in order to use it as an IF transceiver with
transverters for the microwave bands. I got it done this summer and used it on
10 GHz during the ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest, as a "plug-and-play" replacement
for one of my aging FT-290Rs. I have just finished writing this project up, as
it may be of interest to other microwavers. The description is at

http://www.qsl.net/ve3sma/TheK290RProject.pdf .

Happy reading!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: 2 meter SSB/CW Capability Questions

2017-12-14 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
Phil

One possible way to make a decision is to consider whether or not you might
want to try meteor scatter on 2m using MSK144. The recommended absolute
frequency accuracy for that mode is 25 Hz (though I think you'd get away with
80 Hz). This is a real challenge at 2m and the XV144 isn't really up to it,
though I have managed a few MS QSOs using a K2/XV144/amp combo.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and WSJT-X Split operation.

2017-12-05 Thread Steve Lund
I have to run my K3 (S/N 1260) in split mode for WSJT-X.

It works fine for tone frequencies above 1500 Hz, but for low (<1000 Hz)
tones I can't get the ALC above a few bars with all controls (windows,
wsjt-x, K3) to their maximum settings.

Split 'solved' the problem, so I haven't investigated what is causing the
low frequency roll off.

Re: [Elecraft] Experience with KX2 indoors

2017-11-30 Thread Steve Sergeant
I often use the KX2 indoors with one of two temporary antennas:

1) A 3.9, 7.2, and 14.3_MHz 76' trapped and coil-shortened center-fed
inverted-V (dipole) with a SOTAbeams 1:1/15W balun, pitched on a 10m
MFJ "fishing pole", and terminated on some 6' wooden fence posts. This
connects to my shack using a 75' length of RG58.

2) A 36' helical-wrapped vertical wire on that same "fishing pole", five
random non-resonant radials varied between 12' and 33' long at 6 to 12
inches above the ground, and a SOTAbeams 4:1/15W balun. I use this on
7.0 through 29.7_MHz. This connects to my shack using a 35' length of RG-8x.

With this setup I have worked 47 states and 3 Canadian provinces on
JT65, and 8 states on SSB. I regularly check-in to a couple of
multi-state public service nets on 75m as well.

I also carry those same two antennas into the field for camping trips,
but instead of RG58 or RG8x, I carry a 60' piece of RG174. Around the
time of the recent solar eclipse, I made about 20 contacts in 3 hours
from my campsite in Idaho outside Yellowstone N.P. with stations from
the west coast all of the way to the Great Lakes region on 80m and 20m.

When I used the KX2 with a Chameleon "P Loop" I was underwhelmed with
the results.

Re: [Elecraft] Digitized IF over IP?

2017-11-20 Thread Steve Sergeant
Somebody must have already written the code to collect several hundred
FFT bins of 100 or 125 millisecond duration over IP as single-line
updates to a display app on the far end. With typical compression (LZV,
RLL, etc.) that would yield around a 300kbps bitstream or so for 512
frequency bins and 1/8-sec updates; not really a lot of data for most
modern Internet connections.

This is all really well-understood technology which is well supported by
a number of development environments.

I couldn't tell you what commercial products do this, if they do exist.

[Elecraft] MIO's

2017-11-20 Thread Steve Steltzer via Elecraft
I had a buddy who was an Army MIO back in the cold war days. When he got
out I said, hey, why don't you get your ham license? He said he couldn't copy
code until he read what he had typed. They type each letter as they hear it
without actually thinking about it. Which makes sense when you are listening to
foreign languages. In his case he was stationed in Alaska, so I'm sure he can
"type" the extra characters in the Cyrillic alphabet :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Using T1 with KX2 or KX3

2017-11-15 Thread Steve Sergeant
Hmmm. That means that it should be trivial to make a DC-blocking circuit
that would allow you to pull the ring of J3 to DC (and not RF) ground
over the coax to initiate tuning. Then you would have part of the remote
control puzzle solved.

That's nearly enough to finally get me to buy a T1.

[Elecraft] K3S RX antenna switching questions

2017-11-13 Thread Steve Steltzer via Elecraft
Here's the setup : 3 month old K3S. Full wave 80 mtr RX loop. Closest point to
TX antenna is around 200 ft. Over 50 watts I hear relays clicking and stations
have a hard time breaking in even using QRQ plus. I assume the RX antenna is
not switching fast enough and I'm getting  milliseconds of high RF into the
front end and protection relays are kicking in???
Will increasing TX delay help this? If so, how much can I increase it from the
factory setting of 008 before the keying gets choppy running 50 to 60 wpm? Are
there other settings that would affect this? I also run an Acom 2000A from time
to time, which has pin diode T/R switching and, according to reports, does QSK
perfectly at those speeds. I don't want to mess that up either.
Thanks,Steve, WF3T

[Elecraft] Perfect code

Good morning gentlemen,
As Kent and Gary said, timing is everything and sending perfect code should
be the goal of every op. Of course we all make mistakes, even using a keyboard.
We're human. But whatever speed you are at, please don't run words together!
For anyone who copies by the word that makes copy difficult. And it's very
common when a guy gets competent at 30/35 wpm and tries to push faster.

[Elecraft] On CW

2017-10-31 Thread Steve Silverman
Hi Wayne

A few years ago I was in a hotel in Sanford, FL for recurrent aircraft
training. It was actually hovering around 32F.

I was awakened in the middle of the night by some banging on the wall from
my hotel neighbor, and figured a party was going on and went back to
sleep. Some time later I again heard the banging, but this time it was a
distinct SOS. Not having any idea of what might be going on, I called the
front desk (3 AM) and informed them that someone might be in trouble
because of the SOS.

A short time later there was fire equipment outside, but no obvious fire or
other reason for concern.

When I checked out after breakfast, I inquired about what had happened
earlier. The clerk asked if I was the guest who had called to report the
trouble. When I answered in the affirmative, she explained that my
neighbor was in the military and knew how to sound SOS and he wanted to
extend his thanks for saving him.

So what had happened? This guy had stepped out onto his balcony to have a
smoke. As he closed the sliding door, the latch snapped closed and he was
trapped outside, stark naked, in cold weather. The front desk clerk went
to his room, but he had closed the safety bar to prevent any intrusion and
the hinges weren't accessible from the outside. So the fire department was
called and brought him down with a ladder (and hopefully in a blanket).
The hotel had to put him up an an empty room, since his was inaccessible.
The next morning the maintenance crew used their ladder to get inside and
open the door so he could get his belongings.

Morals of the story: 1. You never know when knowing Morse Code can really
make a difference. 2. Don't ever smoke naked outside

[Elecraft] [K2] Frequency Calibration using WWV Audio Tones

2017-10-31 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
I was wondering if anyone had tried doing the reference oscillator frequency
calibration for a K2 without the rather troublesome step of accurate
zero-beating by feeding the 500/600 Hz audio tones from WWV/WWVH to a computer
sound card or smart phone spectrum analyzer, or similar program? It's pretty
easy to read these audio frequencies out to a precision of 1 Hz or so using
Spectran or Spectrogram, for example.

Right now, I'm seeing both WWV and WWVH tones (at the same time!) on my
computer screen (within a few Hz of the correct audio frequencies), with the K2
tuned to 15000.24 kHz, so it really ought to be re-calibrated.

Are there any issues with this option, before I start into the whole process?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 silent on power up

2017-10-15 Thread Steve Webre
Folks,

Have a K3 (#8829) that has been spectacular to date with one exception. Since
first put together, about 10% of the time when powering up, the radio remains
silent with the P3 flat lining. All front panel lights and the main display
come on as normal with no error messages displayed. Turning the K3 off,
waiting several seconds and turning back on restores normal operation with no
other glitches/problems observed.

All software in both the K3 and P3 is current and both update without issue.
Unit is always shut down by the radio power switch and seems to work flawlessly
otherwise.

Any others see this condition?

Re: [Elecraft] Ear Buds with Microphone

I bought the parts to make the adapter cable to use my cell-phone

[Elecraft] practicing CW on K2 without transmitting?

2017-09-25 Thread Steve-KI4EZL
I don't use my K2 much and have forgotten some of the functions. My wife
wants to practice sending CW (CW Ops class), and I wanted to setup the K2
with a good key for her to use. The trouble is, my forgetfulness has won
this battle and I cannot remember what to do on the K2 so that it will not
transmit. Please remind me how to do this.

[Elecraft] KX2 latest beta FW? (and spkr issue)

2017-09-25 Thread Steve Sergeant
I haven't seen much (if any) discussion about the latest KX2 beta
firmware (MCU 2.77 / DSP 1.50, May 26, 2017).

I generally don't try beta firmware unless I have a surplus device to
try it on (or unless I really don't care if device I'm trying on works).

Who else, outside of Elecraft employees, is running it? Have you noticed
any stability issues?

-
As a side note, I thought I had somehow blown my KX2 speaker by
accidentally turning off the AGC. So I just switched to earbuds and
didn't mess with it for a month. Then I got brave and set out to remove
the speaker from the KX2 bottom plate.

After removing the bottom plate from the KX2, and before removing the
speaker, I saw something shiny between the grille and the cone. It was a
single whisker-strand from the 26ga copper-clad I use for my portable
wire antenna. It was completing a magnetic circuit between the voicecoil
spool and the chassis sheet metal. After some very patient work with
tweezers, it was removed and my speaker was fixed.

I recommend that Elecraft glue a layer of fine mesh fabric to the inside
of the sheet metal to protect the speaker from this kind of dirt.

[Elecraft] T1 as remote tuner for KX2/KX3?

2017-09-15 Thread Steve Sergeant
I am developing plans a hut-to-hut skit tour in Canada for next winter.
On this trip, I will want to operate my KX2 inside of metal-roofed
A-frame huts with a 60' feedline (RG-174, RG-58, or 300Ω twinlead?) to
some kind of wire antenna outside. I plan to operate SSB on 40 & 20
meters at a minimum, and 15 & 10m if possible; likely in adverse weather
conditions.

I read the FAQ for the T1 on using it as a remote tuner, which says:

> The T1 is intended for use near the operating position. But with a little
> effort it could be remoted, and its extremely small size would be beneficial
> for this purpose. First, the tuner must be placed in a weatherproof container
> if used outdoors. Second, controlling the tuner remotely requires a shielded
> control cable back to the operating position; this cable must supply, at
> minimum, a simple switch closure to wake up the tuner. It’s also possible to

> the T1 Owner’s Manual. Finally, you’ll need an SWR bridge at the operating
> position since you won’t be able to see the LEDs on the T1.

I can see that the KX2 manual and the T1 manual give a lot of
information about control signals and such. But before I take the time
to try to engineer something or hack something, I'll ask the obvious
question:

Has anybody out there done this?

Follow-up questions to anybody who has:

Can you describe your set-up?

Have any of you found a way to use the KXIO2 and either the PFn or some
other feature to control the T1 from the KX2 through a separate
3-conductor cable?

Thanks and 73s. DE KC6ZKT

[Elecraft] band data from the RS232 port while using the USB cable?

2017-09-12 Thread Steve Steltzer via Elecraft
Brand new to the K3S. Is there a way to get band data to control an Acom amp on
the RS232 port while using the USB cable? I had a lot of trouble with Win10
assigning the radio to ports already in use when I tried using the RS232 port.
Going in and manually changing the port number in Device Manager didn't work.
Finally got it working using the USB cable and I really don't want to go
through all that hassle again to try and get PC comms working using the RS232
port. Apparently when you select USB in the menu, it shuts off the RS232 port?

Re: [Elecraft] Make this email list more manageable - a forum instead?

2017-08-19 Thread Steve Mollman via Elecraft
Another vote for a Forum format.  I use forums for several specialty/collector
cars.  MUCH easier to navigate and isolate the subjects that interest me.
Using Nabble to find information is time consuming and very awkward.

Even though this subject has been brought to Elecraft's attention several
times in the past, for some reason they keep shooting it down.  It is time to
update this to the 21st century.  For a company that prides itself on customer
service and "friendliness" the present method is a failure.

Re: [Elecraft] Make this email list more manageable - a forum instead?

2017-08-19 Thread Steve Sergeant
Like other email lists which convert to a forum, it would change the
whole character of the group and interactions. In my mind it would make
it less social, less friendly, and fewer people would bother to share
their knowledge and experience. I would only visit such a forum if I had
my own specific question to ask or problem to solve; I wouldn't think to
just cruise it to look for ways to help others.

The answer to the problem you describe is for people to get real email
clients with filtering and threading, and to learn how to use them.

Even with Thunderbird, which is just an OK email client, I can easily
manage to volume on this list. I filter all messages to its own separate
mailbox, and they age-off (are deleted) automatically when they're older
than about six weeks.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Sensitivity Spec

2017-08-16 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
Thanks for your comments, Don. When you test K2's, can I assume you have the
signal generator connected directly to the K2 (or through an attenuator) with
no antenna connected?

Normally, one might hope that a preamp would provide some improvement in
receiver noise figure (and hence MDS, sensitivity, noise floor), or there isn't
much point in having it. I've never run into an intermodulation or blocking
problem on 10 GHz (sideband noise issues tend to dominate the *rare* strong
signal scenario) so I expect to leave the K2 preamp on in an attempt to
maximize the sensitivity

I agree that most often transverters have lots of gain but I noticed, with the
particular combination I have, that the increase in receiver noise output
resulting from turning on both the 10 GHz-to-144 MHz and the 144 MHz-to-28 MHz
transverters was only about 7 dB (K2 preamp on, AGC off) compared to the K2
alone, rather less than usually seems to be the case, so I was afraid that the
front end noise might not dominate the overall receiver noise. The
intermediate transverter does have relatively low gain, by design. With a
couple of tweaks and a minor repair in the transverters I've now increased this
ratio by a couple of dB.

Since the 10 GHz transverter noise figure was measured by the manufacturer at
1.2 dB and the K2 is something closer to 10 dB the increase in noise may not
have to be all that much for the system to be working right. I haven't felt up
to doing all the necessary math this week to make sure, especially without a
reliable number for the K2 noise figure. Most likely I'll try it out in the 10
GHz and Up contest this weekend and if it proves to be deaf compared to others'
rigs, I'll have to delve deeper.

 Steve,

Typically, the receiver is limited by the noise
 floor, so the MDS will
 not change much
whether the preamp is on or off.  While the preamp will
increase the strength of the signals, it also
 adds to the noise floor.

Generally a transverter will have a low noise
 preamp with plenty of
 gain, so there is
usually no advantage in running the transceiver with
the preamp on.  Use your ears while listening
to a strong signal to see
 if you can detect
overload of the receiver preamp - if so turn it off,
but if there is no overload distortion, you can
 leave it on.

 Typical MDS
measurements are made at 500 Hz.
 I typically
do a quick test of the sensitivity of K2s that I repair.  A

-130dBm signal should be detectable above
 the receiver noise floor.  For
 that test,
I have observed that it makes little difference whether the

preamp is on or off.  So I would suggest
 you test whether strong signal
 performance
is better with the preamp on or off.  My wager is that you

will choose to leave it off unless your
 transverter(s) have negative
 gain on RX.

[Elecraft] KPA 1500 and Pure Signal - a DDC/DUC SDR in the Elecraft pipeline?

2017-08-14 Thread Steve Ireland
G’day

I am sure I am not the only one who has noticed that the new KPA 1500 has a
connector on its rear panel labelled ‘TX Sample’. Reading the Elecraft FAQ on
the KPA 1500, it says that this “provides a low level KPA 1500 TX RF signal for
sampling use by transceivers that support closed-loop pre-distortion
techniques, e.g. Pure Signal. This low-level signal is taken directly from the
amplifier’s directional coupler.”

For those on this reflector who are not familiar with ‘Pure Signal’, it is the
name given to “the theory and implementation of the clean transmission logic
developed by the OpenHPSDR team and implemented in PowerSDR [softwar as used
with the ANAN radios” (see SDR-Radio.com -
http://sdr-radio.com/Version-3/Transmit/Pure-Signal).

Using pre-distortion, Pure Signal means that transmit IM3 can be improved
significantly – up to 20dB from memory.

Now Pure Signal is an SDR technique and many amateurs have been wondering when
Elecraft is going to finally take a leap beyond the KX3 into digital down
conversion/up conversion SDR or even the latest Direct Fourier Conversion SDR?

Looks to me perhaps that the leap is not far off – unless Elecraft are seeing a
big market for ANAN SDR owners buying the KPA 1500 (which, incidentally looks
fabulous)? ;-)

What say you, Wayne N6KR?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Odd ALC behavior

2017-08-03 Thread Steve Lund
Dave,

I have exactly the same problem. For me it does not occur with RTTY. That
seems to be solid. JT65 and FT8 really show the problem. When the problem
occurs I can often make a RTTY transmission and suddenly the ALC shows for
FT8/JT65.

I have multiple soundcards in my computer and in theory the windows
'sounds' are going to another soundcard. But, it has always seemed like the
problem occurs after I've gone on the internet and a website has sound on
it.

I'm going to try K4TAX's solution. When 'working' my K3 Line In is 4 or so;
WSJT-X is 70% and Speaker is 100%.

Let us know if you get a stable solution.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Kit issue - Does not transmit in SSB

2017-08-01 Thread Steve Lund
This is a really common problem with Win10. If it has downloaded a new
update in the background, but not installed it, many of the drivers quit
working. For me it is ALWAYS soundcard #1 that fails. Once a reboot is
performed, things start working normally.

Re: [Elecraft] MAC BOOK KX3 QUESTION

2017-07-31 Thread Steve Sergeant
Gerry:

I suspect that your MacBook Pro does have an audio input. If there's not
a separate mic connector, then the headphone connector probably provides
a mic/line input on a 4-conductor TRRS connector.

You might have to build a custom cable.

[Elecraft] KPA500 dead?

2017-07-28 Thread Steve Lund
It appears that my KPA500 has failed. It has a permanent "PA DISS" on all
bands. Just before that fault it smelt like wire insulation was burning (no
smoke). It has this condition on 160 - 6m. The fans seem to be running fine
and the PA temp was 50C. I've run the KPA500 on JT65/MSK144/FT8 for over a
month on 6m without a problem.

I was using the amp on 6m with 400w out (about all I can get on that band
with 110vac). I had just finished a QSO on FT8. I can only get about 50w
out before the "PA DISS" occurs.

I've opened the top cover and see no obvious damage. Are there any other
checks before sending it back to Elecraft?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] "Hot" setup for Field Day with op headset, logger headphones, and speakers

Hi all,
With Field Day behind us, and since our club runs mostly K3's, I thought I'd
ask if anyone had suggestions for the best way to configure the K3, use
adapters, audio distribution box of some sort, etc., to allow for a headset for
the operator, headphones for the logger, and speakers for the "gallery" to hear.

Re: [Elecraft] A question about using the K3S with KPA500 on fullbreak-in

2017-06-17 Thread Steve Ireland
Hi Fred

Thank you so much for the information and the K-line intro_guide PDF – very
much appreciated! It looks like the key to the situation is connecting the ACC
connector from the K3S to the KPA500 and, once this is done, the KPA500 will
follow the K3S settings, i.e. if the K3S is set to full-break in, the KPA500
will follow this.

Have a great weekend!!!

Hi Steve,

Maybe the K-line_intro_guide.pdf available at
http://www.ke7x.com/home/k-line-introduction-and-set-up-guide might help.
Although written for the K3, there isn't anything different you need to do for
the K3S.

have a section in it on doing full break-in with the K3S.

Please can someone on the list let me know what interconnections/cables are

selections that need to be made, so I can pass this information onto him.

Thank you!

I may have misread the Heil webpage. Heil responded and told me to read the K3

It did not, IMHO, and Elecraft couldn't help either. It would help if people,
such as Heil, understood that we aren't all mic experts!
This scenario kind of reminds me of the old days of supporting leased data
lines when Pac Bell was responsible for the ends and AT in the middle. LOL!

[Elecraft] K3 & Heil HM-10 Dual

2017-04-17 Thread Steve Wilson via Elecraft
Hi all,
I setup a K3, that my godfather is borrowing, while his Kenwood is off the air.
I reviewed the webpage on the Heil Sound website here:
https://heilsound.com/heil-amateur-radio/support/dsp-settings/all-things-elecraft/
Unfortunately, the page refers to the mic with regard to the front panel
setting, but does not specifically refer to the mic model with respect to the
mic gain and mic bias settings. I sent an email to Heil Sound suggesting that
the missing detail be added for this particular mic. But thought I'd ask here,
in case anyone knew the answer. I deduced that the setting should be Front
Panel, Low, No Bias, but am not 100% sure about that!
Here's the strange part about this story. I did have a QSO with a station in
North Dakota after setting up the rig, so we knew all was working. We shut off
the rig and I left for home. Later in the evening, my godfather turned the K3
on and tried to transmit, but noticed that he wasn't getting any moving bars
with the transmit audio. I walked him through putting the K3 into test mode,
turning down the mic gain, and then turning up the mic gain while he was
transmitting to find the optimum level, but we couldn't get the meter to show
any response to the audio. I did the same procedure on my own K3 to make sure I
was talking him through the right steps and it worked fine on mine. He did try
a Heil headset with the same results. I plan to try and get up to visit again
this weekend and bring a hand mic with me to try and make sure that it is
definitely the K3 and not the mic.
So unless I'm missing something obvious, it seems like there is an issue with
the K3 itself. Unfortunately, Elecraft support couldn't go beyond the same
tests that I did last night.
Does anyone have any suggestions short of shipping to, or dropping off the rig,
at Elecraft for a thorough test?
Thanks, Steve  KG6HJU

pushing (and holding) the tune button with the power set to 11 watts or more, I
get a high reflected power message on an antenna which is matched at low power.
The power supply voltage reads about the normal 14V and the ammeter in the
power supply is pinned at 25 A (or more) when this happens. An external SWR
meter reads lots of reflected power. Everything unplugged from the rig except
the power cable and the coax to the external SWR meter/antenna tuner/antenna.
It's fine on a dummy load.

I'd suspect a simple RF feedback problem, except that with 100 watts of CW
everything is perfectly normal. The problem occurs only when using the tune
button around the nominal tune-mode 20 watts, so the external SWR meter reading
implies that the PA is probably oscillating at some frequency where the antenna
is not matched. I haven't tried any other bands yet, but since there does seem
to be RF feedback involved, I'm not sure they will tell me much of a diagnostic
nature.

Any ideas as to what might be happening and how to stop it?

73,
Steve VE3SMA

[Elecraft] K3 slightly off frequency

2017-04-08 Thread Steve Wilson via Elecraft
A few of us in Fremont, CA have a weekly 10 meter net. I have a friend with a
K3 who always sounds off frequency. When I use my K3, I've been told that I am
off frequency. There are a couple of KX3 users who don't seem to have a
problem. When I use my Kenwood TS-590 I seem to be on frequency.
Is the K3 known, in general, for being slightly off frequency?

Re: [Elecraft] Future KX3/KX2 accessories?

2017-03-30 Thread Steve Sergeant
I hope we can be more creative than that!

How about recording, playback, and automation features, some of which
have not yet been imagined. How abut signal processing operations that
are beyond the DSP capability in the radio? How about some
not-so-distant future when spoken language translation might be possible?

A sound-card type interface within the unit opens up whole new doors of
possibilities.

Here's a few non-trivial brainstorms:

1) A bluetooth interface that allows rig control and audio I/O on a
nearby (smart-) phone. While the front-panel UIs of the KX2 makes
really clever use of limited knob and switch space, being able to build
richer interfaces into the phone would be awesome. The possibilities
become really crazy then: Logging, some kind of mini waterfall display,
sound recording and playback, comparatively unlimited freq. memories
with extended meta-data, calendar interaction, storing QSO logs for
later acknowledgment in email, slow-scan TV support, etc. and too many
other et ceteras to count.

2) An automotive (12V) charger for the on-board KX2 battery.

3) A really tiny, ultralight 9:1 UNUN--perhaps AA battery size. This
would be for matching a long wire antenna that doesn't start right at
the radio (instead of using the BNC-binding-posts adapter) in situations
when you want the radiating wire some distance away, like outside your
car, tent, or a metal-roofed cabin. Imagine trying to make contacts from
inside this kind of building in the dead of winter after carrying your
gear in on skis or snowshoes: [ http://clairtappaanlodge.com/bradley-hut ]

4) An "Otter Box" style or neoprene case for both the KX2 & KX3 that
would protect them from slightly rougher handling.

And I second the idea for a way to back up all of your memories,
settings and tunings.

[Elecraft] Beware of the speaker magnet on the KX2

2017-01-28 Thread Steve Wilson via Elecraft
The other day I turned on my newly acquired KX2 (thanks Santa!) and found that
the audio had a horrible buzzing noise. I started to assume the worst, but I
didn't have time to troubleshoot it.
This morning, I turned on the rig and observed the buzzing again. I turned the
rig over and started to laugh! A used staple was caught in the speaker grill.
Once I removed the staple, the audio was perfect. This incident reminded me of
my old BlackBerry. One day a paper clip was stuck to it. I had no idea how
magnetic it was!
Bottom line...be careful of any loose, metal objects that may be under your
KX2! :-)

As I have been reading the various threads on Amplifiers over the past few
days, I am struck by the incredible variety of topics and activities that
bring all of us joy in Amateur Radio. For some of us, it is the ability to
make contacts with very little power. For others, just running a standard
100 watts and trying to earn DXCC etc. or other awards, is a great
challenge.

For others, getting every bit of legal power output as possible, or
discussing what 1-3 dbs. means in making that contact is very important
whereas, someone else might say, "Who cares?" We all get enjoyment from the
hobby in so many ways.

The maximum power I have ever used was 100 watts. With a good yagi, there
was never a station if I heard it, I could not work it. I might have not
been able to bury everyone with a kilowatt signal and be heard first, but it
is really an amazing thing to be in the fray with the big boys and through
timing of the call and other tricks learned over the years, get someone to
come back to me.

I was exclusively an SSB operator for 24 years, then took 9 years off from
the hobby then came back as a CW operator. It was quite a challenge to get
my speed back after so many years of viewing CW as a means to get up to
Extra, instead of a mode of conversation that I could really enjoy.

After all these years, What I have discovered is not whether I can squeeze
out all the power possible, or have the greatest antennas, or all the
greatest rigs, (Although my K2, KX3, PX3, and KXPA100 are absolutely the
best rigs I have ever ownedthanks Elecraft!) or spent time on this group
arguing the minute details of some technical question, even though many get
a great deal of enjoyment doing that.

What I have discovered is it is the relationships we make on the air with
our fellow hams. It is that human connection across the miles, whether it
be several miles on 160, or around the world on 10, it is the great memories
of all the interesting hams I have met on the air, both on SSB, Digital, or
CW that really make Amateur Radio special.

We are all very fortunate to have such a great hobby to enjoy...and to
always remember it is a hobby, and that family always comes first, yet have
great experiences along the way.

When I became a ham at 34 years old, I thought about how ham radio would be
with me throughout my life and as I got older and had more time, it would be
wonderful to have the hobby. Now that I am 68 years old, I still don't seem
to have enough time, but ham radio is a wonderful hobby to enjoy. One of my
realizations is that even though I have enjoyed several sunspot cycle
maximums over the years, if I am lucky, I will get to enjoy only one more
in my lifetime. Life passes so quickly. Enjoying every day in the
wonderful hobby is such a blessing, and I know that many of us share those
thoughts.

Very 73's,

Terry, N7TB

[Elecraft] KPA500/KAT500 with Icom ic-7300

2016-12-26 Thread steve foster
Has anyone successfully run this combination? I have tried rf sensing
and get a fault on the amp,or the tuner locks up. tried using the Icom
band data to the amp, using the elecraft aux cable between the tuner and
the amp, and any combination of the above. It appears not to be mode
dependant. I am driving the icom with 30% power. The power level does
not appear to matter. The tuner/amp combination has been working
successfully with my previous radio (brand Y). There appears to me to
be an issue of the amp keying at the same time the tuner is switching
bands.
Both amp And tuner have latest firmware. Cables are from the elecraft
manuals, or Elecraft.

 Any help greatly appreciated.

2016-10-18 Thread Steve
I have seen a similar issue with my PX3 but it may not be the same or it
may be related to the root of the problem.

What I notice is what "in the old days" would be switch bounce. What I
notice (like you) is when I turn the knob fast the value bounces around
but doesn't go anywhere. I find that if I turn the knob real slow it
will work. The knob is an encoder and must be seeing CW/CCW pulses out
of sync or something like that?

Does slow work?

The PX3 is otherwise functional.

Any suggestions? I opened it up and all the solder connections for the

During the CQWW RTTY contest just concluded I happened to accidentally QSY
to 17m and my radio basically locked up in transmit mode, it'd "blip" into
RX every second or so, but go right back to TX before I could do anything
to stop it. The only way out seems to be the band selector buttons on the
KPA500 which allowed me to switch back to 20m.

I checked all the other bands and did not observe this behavior, it's only
17m. I'm at a total loss as to what is happening as it doesn't appear to
have anything to do with the computer interface (I unplugged the USB cable
from the rig and the problem persists). It may be the case the problem has
been with me a long time as my antenna is not resonant on 17, so I hardly
every go there.

Corrupted config or firmware maybe?

I had recently stopped monitoring the reflector as I only have a K1 and
two K2's. Everything is K3 and subject lines rarely reflect that anymore
so it's hard to filter them. But I had a K2 problem and rejoined. Got a
response with solution within an hour! And discovered that I miss the OT
discussions from a unique bunch of experts. Most of the OTs are
interesting and more relevant to a non-KX/K3 owner. So I'm back to
monitoring only OTs. hi.

The new products don't fill any need in my hamming that isn't satisfied
by the K2, but the ongoing development of the state of ham art at
Elecraft is extraordinary to see.

[Elecraft] Questions about portable vertical and Super Antenna

2016-09-17 Thread Steve via Elecraft

In some recent postings about Super Antenna and other portable verticals,
issues were raised about a suitable counterpoise. Please excuse my
callous and opportunistic plug for my (still in review but available)
incursion
into the question. It is posted at http://www.eham.net/articles/37408
(Space Blanket Revisited). It seems to load and work nicely with my KX1 and
KX3 internal ATU's,

Re: [Elecraft] T1 as stopped tuning correctly.

2016-08-08 Thread Steve-KI4EZL
Thanks Don.

The antenna that I am using is the UltiMax 100 End Fed antenna with a 33' wire
which all came from the factory as is. It has been a super antenna, worked
lots of state side and DX with it and the MTR 5b radio tuning with the T1. I
just spent a week with it up in the Smokes. It was hung off a 31' Jakite
fiberglass extendable pole mounted up on the rear ladder of my motorhome, about
35' in the air.

Thanks for helping, I appreciate it.

I heard from Gary at tech support, moments ago, and he had me test some things.
He thinks that there are a couple diodes gone, and offered to fix it if I send
it in. I also just ordered a second T1 to use when I break one of the tuners.
I have big stuff, but don't care to use them with my little qrp radios.

Thanks again for your help.

I have very recently purchase several little kits from Elecraft, to learn how
to build and fix on. I also want to try building a very basic kit radio, then
a K1. I have all the recommended tools, the adjustable Weller solder station,
magnification lens and light, proper solder, etc... Hopefully, I will soon
have the skill to handle this type of small repair job on my toys.

I have a very nice K2 that is loaded, several little elecraft kits, and want to
build a K1 soon. I am also saving up for a new factory built K3s.

Take care Don,

Thanks again,

Steve

Re: [Elecraft] T1 as stopped tuning correctly.

2016-08-08 Thread Steve-KI4EZL
Thanks Don.

In the video I posted on youtube, the blinking yellow is actually the self test
sending code for each value.

The green light was blinking when in first step of tune mode, then touch paddle
to start 2nd step of tune mode. Normally it moves around trying different
tunings and latches on to the best one. Now, it just has steady tone, steady
green light, flickering yellow a tiny bit, but does not try different tunings
and does not latch, and does not finish the tuning, like it use to. I ran the
self test and the blinking yellow light showed the following results.

S=1R0,SWR
V=8R9,BATTERY VOLTAGE
L=0, INDUCTANCE
C=0, CAPACITANCE
N=t,  NETWORK CONFIG
B=0,  BAND ID
F=1R07  FIRMWARE  REVISION

Tested following with neg dmm lead on neg bat tab. No battery in device
tested. Red DMM lead on parts ends, one at a time:
D1: 122/0
D2: 122/0
R3: 120 / 117
R4: 120 / 117
R5: 118 / 0
R6: 118 / 0

Then, testing with both pos & neg DMM lead tips on each end of parts, then
swapping neg for pos & vice versa,
D1: 122 / 79
D2: 122 / 79

[Elecraft] T1 as stopped tuning correctly.

2016-08-08 Thread Steve-KI4EZL
Hello,

My T1 tuner quit working. It is about 5 weeks old.

I have video taped the attempt to tune and the self test, and posted it on
YouTube. I hope this will help with the diagnosis. Here is that link
- https://youtu.be/jprcv6q_HFQ

Station is a 33' EF wire antenna, t1 tuner, LNR MTR 5b QRP radio, Begali
traveller light iambic key. Radio runs on AA batteries, 10-11 volts. It
has always worked well before, but now does not tune.

Self test results: S=1R0, V=8R9, L=0, C=0, N=t, B=0, F=1R07.

Please advise.

Thank you,
Steve

[Elecraft] "Blue" topic list

2016-07-31 Thread Steve via Elecraft

First off, I really like reading the Elecraft reflector. Not only is it my
main source of info about Elecraft gear and operation, but many interesting
other ham radio (and life in general) topics. However, there are times
when I am too busy/lazy to read everything and find it tedious to copy topics
into the search field ( "CRTL F" ) etc. On quite a few blogs and email
newsletters I have seen the topic list is structured as a set of links to the
specific items; such that, one clicks the (blue) topic and jumps right to
the posting. I wonder whether this might be done with this Elecraft
reflector? I realize I am being selfish and lackadaisical, but please consider
this
suggestion.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 cycling

2016-07-30 Thread Steve Ward
When my KAT500 started acting strange I opened it up. There are two
thick, green insulated wires that cross each other on the PCB, and the
top one had sagged down and got close enough to the bottom one that it
had arced through the insulation. I'm guessing I had a less than
optimal match! Anyway after consulting support, I gently separated the
two lines and put a double layer of electrical tape between to hopefully
prevent recurrence.

[Elecraft] Kady K3 Book available

2016-06-22 Thread Steve via Elecraft

When I got my K3 last year, I didn't realize that the deal included a copy
of Fred Kady's K3 book. I ordered a copy from Elecraft, but I was too late
in trying to cancel my order. Result is that I have a nice used copy
(residing on my clothes hamper covered with tear stains and candle wax) and a
new
copy, in the original mailing box. I would like for it (the new copy) to
have a good home. I will be happy to trade for (a) a certain microphone
adapter cord ( IC-735 to JT270) for which I can supply pin-outs or (b) CW sked
with Alaska (first choice) or (Nebraska) including LOTW AND card no matter
how long it takes to prehend my puny sigs and lousy fist. Alternatively I
will pay attention to any other offer or request. Please reply to

[Elecraft] Question re TXMON

2016-06-07 Thread Steve via Elecraft
I have recently added P3 to my K3 and (surprise!) I love it. My
(previously owned) P3 came with TXMON. TXMON works fine with dummy load, but
often
shows very high SWR readings when K3 ATU is used with non-resonant antenna.
I understand that the TXMON "looks at" antenna and doesn't know what ATU is
doing. My question is, "Is there any problem or danger to leave the TXMON
connected when using ATU on non-resonant part of antenna bandwidth? My
reason to ask is that tab to release TXMON sensor plug is right up against top
RS232 plug and I need to disconnect that plug in order to disconnect TXMON
sensor cable.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] HFpack and the KX-Line

2016-06-03 Thread Steve
Wayne & All,
High on my “convenience” list, is the ability to see/use the controls of
whatever radio is selected for HFpack /PM operation while one walks. As a
result, this is one reason I have shunned the various military radios (weight
being another major factor) and use an IC-703 with the face plate remote
mounted on the chest strap connecting the shoulder straps high on the front
chest (with radio in the backpack).

For the KX2, I envision some sort of zipper pouch, complete with exits for the
various cables, that could be suspended from the chest strap. With the zipper
open, the KX2 controls are available, yet the radio is secure in the pouch.
Whatever antenna is chosen can be mounted to your selected pack frame in back
with light weight coax running up a shoulder strap to your back pack and
antenna mounting point.

Get with your KX2 pouch vendors - this should be easy to design! (Reference:
Icom LC-156 pouch for 706 or 703 face plate - only better!)

[Elecraft] KX2/CO to UK Wire-n-Tree, 10W-17m SSB! (SFI=86 Spots=58)

2016-05-31 Thread Steve Galchutt
Took a new ham & friend (who’s interested in learn code and using it in the
filed) up Mt Herman this morning to experience his first SOTA activation! We
were on 17/20m SSB. Stellar morning sunny 60s with a few white puffy clouds.

I set up the KX2 on 17m, thru a wire up a tree and took the first shift ...then
halted the pile and said "standby for a change of operators" Eric/W0RLY took
over ...he was in the hot seat working over a dozen stations coast to coast in
just minutes! Of course he couldn’t stop grinning the whole time! (Photo of log
page is only half of his QSOs!) He did great!!

Suddenly we hear a big roar of (5)-F16s (Thunderbirds) buzzing the mountain
actually flying below us as they practiced for AFA graduation ceremony coming
soon. (Red circle in center of the enlarged pic!)

Then my MH3 mic developed a intermittent open-short so it was good to have my
tiny back up mic! The little cell phone mic recently converted worked
excellent! (also had KX2’s internal mic but prefer the "PTT" mic) ...Busy day!

Grand finale! ...I then work SOTA friend in UK -- Phil/G4OBK in PICKERING
England Wow! ...he was using 150w to a 3-el yagi to my little KX2 using a 29'
wire in tree @ 25' w/10w SSB!!! Woohoo! ...made my day! Who says the bands are
dead!?

[Elecraft] Dick Tracey radio

My response:
Due to superior intellect and athletic prowess, many Elecrafters are able
to control the pulsations of their radial artery. The KX1/3 wrist radio has
a sensor imbedded in its back which uses these pulsations to encode CW
or other digital modes. Some early developers and testers have been lost
during QRX.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] External amplifier keying circuit question

2016-05-18 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
Initial testing using the two-MOSFET circuit
(http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/k2_t-r_rly_drvr.pdf ) with two 2N7000s, but
with R3 removed, indicates that it is working fine, switching a load of about
50 mA at 12-13V. I left R2 in.

Thanks all for your comments.

2016-05-16 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
Thanks, Don.  Good point re the input side...I guess I'm not used to having
plug-in boards in mind!

Yes, I was thinking of a pair of 2N7000s - they are fine for the current and
voltage I need to switch.

[Elecraft] [K2] External amplifier keying circuit question

2016-05-16 Thread Steve Kavanagh via Elecraft
I'm planning to add an external amplifier/transverter keying circuit to one of
my K2s.  I found two versions on the web, both apparently designed by N0SS
(SK).  The one on the Elecraft site
(http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/Amp_keying_ckt.htm ) appears to be his original
circuit, using a 2N7000 driving a 2N.  The archive of Tom's later kit
offering (http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/k2_t-r_rly_drvr.pdf ) uses two
MOSFETs and is capable of keying somewhat higher voltage and current.  But also
he added a 100k resistor from the input gate (8R) to ground and another from
the gate of the second MOSFET to ground.
I am trying to figure out if these two 100 k resistors serve any useful purpose
or if I can happily leave them both out of the 2-MOSFET circuit.  There doesn't
immediately appear to be any need to pull these gates down as there are several
loads on the input 8R voltage (on the K2 RF board) which will do that for the
1st MOSFET, and the 1st MOSFET will pull down the gate of the 2nd one when
needed.  Maybe something odd will happen on power-up or power-down?
Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] KIO3B woes

2016-05-06 Thread Steve Ward
Hi all, so I just got back in town last night, and I wanted to get my
new KIO3B installed in s/n 1544 so I could give it a run during 7QP.
Assembly went smoothly enough and the "Y" cable to the P3 seems to be
doing its thing just fine.

But my Windows 10 computer isn't talking to the K3 or the P3 anymore.
Device manager sees both the sound card and the serial port (assigned to
COM5) but neither the K3 utility or the P3 utility (both latest
versions) can talk with their respective equipment. They just cycle
through all the baud rates trying to make a connection (I checked and
both K3 and P3 are set to 38400).

What have I missed? I checked all the firmware revisions before
starting and everything looks just fine. I double checked the position
of the slide switch on the I/O board before closing the radio up. Any
ideas? I would hate to have to tear it all apart again tonight just to
get on the air for the contest tomorrow, but it's starting to look like
that's my answer. Please copy me on any replies because I get the
digest version of the reflector and it'll be a while before another one
comes through.

Thanks everyone!

[Elecraft] [K3] K3EXREF not working

2016-04-22 Thread Steve Lund
I just noticed that my K3 frequency is approximately 50 Hz off.

I have the K3EXREF installed and the external 10 MHz is supplying +10 dBm
to the rear panel connector. The 10 MHz appears to be 3 Hz low according to
my counter and spectrum analyzer. Is this too much?

One recent change is that I installed the K3SYN3A a few months ago. I
didn't check to see if the K3EXREF was locking to the external reference.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks,
Steve, K6UM
