Re: [Elecraft] Is KX3 going obsolete

I agree. It’s like on air: no politics, no religion.

(BTW: I myself never feel offended when in a QSO or a face-to-face conversation
in english somebody raises his eyebrows or makes a joke due to my funny kraut
accent – but YMMV.)

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-15 Thread df...@darc.de
When I bought my used KX3 there was a Windcamp heat sink installed. I have not
much experience with high duty modes on full power because I can use the
KXPA100 when power is a critical factor. But I think this solution is
sufficcient, too. But it mostly is offered along with two side handles and a
plastic cover and this set is not cheap despite the fact that it comes from
china.

Some time ago I saw a DIY solution from an italian ham which is simple,
affordable, and not too ugly:

https://kx3companion.com/2014/07/10/simple-cheap-and-effective-diy-heatsink-for-kx3/

And I think it will work for a KX3 when it would work for 5 CPUs.

2022-06-10 Thread df...@darc.de
Or this. While vacuuming it’s recommended to block the fan so it cannot rotate.
In some cases, when the blades are driven bei the airflow too fast, the fan
works as a generator and sends some voltage into the unit - which can be
harmless but also can destroy sensitive electronics (if there is any inside the
supply).

Maybe it’s the cooling fan of the power supply. When more power is needed the
supply gets warmer and the fan spins faster - so you can hear it then. If it’s
too annoying, there are more quiet fans with which you could replace the
original fan.

Thanks. I have no doubt this is good stuff. Looks well made and the price is
affordable.

I regret nobody in Europe makes such equipment (or maybe I didn’t hear about
yet). When I buy from sellers in the USA it becomes incredibly expensive when
shipping, VAT, and customs fees are added.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Option Advice Wanted

2022-05-03 Thread df...@darc.de
I bought a used one last year and had to take what was inside. Fortunately it
was nearly everything except the 2 m option which I don’t miss.

Until now I didn’t use the internal battery option, instead I have an external
LiFePo battery. The clock is nice to have though.

The KXAT3 is great! I see the difference every time I use the KXPA100 and it’s
antenna tuner. The PA’s tuner is not bad, but the KXAT3 could tune a wet tying
cord.

Another thing: The former owner installed two handles instead of the side
plates (I think they are from Windcamp or similar) and a heatsink. This brings
advantages as well as drawbacks. The good thing is the additional protection,
the bad thing are my fat fingers in tandem with the more narrow space around
some of the knobs. Nevertheless I bought a pair of similar handles for the PX3,
too, because the two units look nicer on the desk, when I operate both of them
together.

Only my experiences, YMMV.
