[Elecraft] [K1] was Happy 15th Birthday to my K2!
Petr, I agree, the K1 is also a great lttle rig! I built mine after very invasive shoulder surgery many years ago. Since I was in quite a bit of pain, on Vicodin around the clock--and forbidden from lifting heavy weights--I thought it would be a fun experiment to see if I could build a fully-optioned K1 while my faculties were so dimmed. I cheated a little, using toroids wound by TheToroidGuy. Success! And it still works FB. After seeing Heathkit HW-8s go for $1K+ on Ebay in the past, it is no surprise that K1s, KX1s, and eventually K2s can fetch big money. They're all fine performing radios to this day (not the HW-8). - Big congrats and I wish you many another DX and enjoyable QSOs with your K2. My K2 #4800 is working like champ, and it is hard to beat. Just my K1 can outperform K2 regarding the noise figure, hi. I hope that K2 will be still available and I really miss the K1 in the offer. The popularity of K1 is evidenced by the huge price it still commands if a piece appears at auction or for sale somewhere. [Elecraft] In Praise of the KAT500
I love chasing DXpeditions. For E51D, N. Cook, due to a minor injury, I found myself "trapped" in my evil lair in far Northern California near Lake Almanor, CN90. Stranded with only a K3S, KPA500, and KAT500-- I could only put up a 15m inverted V on an MFJ mast at 15ft, and a high-power Hamstick on 40m at 8ft. Two pathetic radials. Fortunately for me, these were up before my unplanned dive onto cement. My temporary QTH is down in a bowl, surrounded by high trees. Mt. Lassen is a mere 18 miles away by pyroclastic flow, smack-dab between me and Japan. The Hamstick is designed for SSB, obviously, and I did not not get an an answer from MFJ as to how much power it could take on CW. As time in the pileup went on, the PWR knob crept clockwise. Never have I been so happy to have a dx op running at 40wpm! To my astonishment, the KAT500 loaded up the little V on 10, 12, 17, and 20m to an SWR around 1.5, and the 40m Hamstck on 30m below 2. UNBELIEVEABLE. No salted snow in sight! Thanks to the great ears of the E51D CW ops, low local noise, plenty of time on my hands, and the SUPERB KAT500, I worked them on 10-40M CW, and had a blast doing it. [Elecraft] Want to build a K2
Yes, the KXPA100 works FB with a K2/10, and gives you the built-in 100w ATU if installed. You can also then hook up a larger amp on the other side of the KXPA100 as well. No brag, just fact. I urge anyone thinking of building a K2 to get off the fence and order one now. The K2 is a blast to build, and when you're done, you have a fine, elegant, simple radio to enjoy The writing is on the wall--supply chain problems and parts unavailability will eventually kill the K2, and it will join the K1 and KX1 in legend. These days, I operate my K2 as much as my K4! One final thought that never occured to me before it happened--you may not be physically capable of building a K2 for all of your ham life I'm glad I built every Elecraft kit ever offered--the best kits and best support--what are YOU waiting for? 73, Eric NF6S ex WD6DBM, ex WN6RVG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Power glitch turns on KPA1500
I was just monitoring 6m with my K4 on, KPA1500 off. The AC power dropped out for one second, then came back on. The K4 turned off, but is apparently undamaged. However, when the power came back on, the KPA1500 turned itself on. This is disturbing, as I keep dust covers on the amp when not in use. I'm not sure what would have happened if I hadn't been around, and and the PS would have been starved of air. WOL is set to ON, but my WiFi access point has a built-in battery backup, so I doubt that it glitched. Amp and K4 are hard-wired to the router through a switch. I'm running the latest beta fw, 2.62 I think. I don't want this to happen again, but I don't want to have to turn off the white switch at the back of the power supply every time I leave the house, either. Laptop was on, but FANticipator was not running. [Elecraft] Tuning KAT4 into KPA1500?
My K4 shows about a 1.8 SWR while operating into the KPA1500 on 6m. My 6m antenna has a flat SWR, 1.09. But when I activate a K4 TUNE, with the ATU engaged, the KPA1500 stops TX. There is nothing in the K4 online manual about forcing a tune while the amp is running. Is there a way to do this, or alter the K4's atu settings manually? I'd like to keep the K4 as cool and happy as possible. 73, Eric WD6DBM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Thank you again, Don, for these crystal-clear instructions! I got it done, even with shaky hands and numb fingertips. If you are careful, you can do it without removing the cables. You will need to remove the screws holding the KPA100 shield. Slide the shield out from under the soldering lug located near the ANT jack. There are 4 screws holding the PA transistors - you should be able to snug them down about 1/8 of a turn - do not "beef" them down, just make them snug. Reinstall the shield, and put the KPA100 back on the K2 - Make sure all 3 of the cables are still seated properly. May I suggest adding a command that allows users to select the more aggressive 6m fan profile on the KPA1500 for HF use? Call it, for example, FP6; to revert back to the normal HF profile, say FPD. Digital users would find a cooler running amp for RTTY and FT8, for example, as well as slow-speed CW ops and K4 users pushing the fabulous CESSB feature, which does create a hotter running KPA. My experiments show that just running the fans at FAN1 or FAN2 do not create sufficient airflow as the amp heats up. Running at FAN3 keeps things cool, but can create large swings in neatsink temps during rx periods.. It also irritates the XYL, and makes copy more difficult, even with Radiosport, Heil, or Bose QC-35 noise-cancelling heatsets Likewise, experimenting with FAN DWELL did not solve the issue. There is an external solution, FANticipator, but this requires a computer with wifi, and a LAN connection to the KPA1500--more stuff that needs to work and be turned on. FANticipator does very effectively lower PA temps AND fan noise. I think the FP6 command will also help with noise and temps. The advantage of implementing my suggestion is that it does not affect KPA1500 owners who are happy with the current HF fan profile, but can help those of us with low noise tolerance, tinnitus, or who just want a cooler KPA1500, and does it without an external Pc. [Elecraft] HELP! XFINITY SHUT OFF INTERNET DUE TO HAM ANTENNAS
Dear Gang: Xfinity, our internet provider, showed up at 7:30am this morning, to explain to the XYL that we were being cut off for good because my amateur radio activities had caused wide area outages. Oddly, these wide area outages did not include my own house. They told her the antennas themselves--absent any power--were the problem The last time I was threatened, I installed chokes and opto-isolaters on our shielded ethernet lines, and after being told they use 14Mhz as their carrier frequency, I have stayed off 20m, only using 100w unless I'm in a rare contest. I asked to speak to a technical guy--they gave me a number which I called, but he never called back. Any Ideas? Does anyone have a contact at the ARRL, or know a communications lawyer? Comcast/Xfinity will be back out here at 2pm Pacific time--I'd appreciate any help. My XYL depends on an internet connection to work. Being off the air is unimaginable. Re: [Elecraft] 20m CW + KPA1500 = Comcast Disconnect
This begs the question: If I "caused" the outage, how is it possible my own internet never went out? They claim they get a lot of complaints about customer's internet dropping out, but don't realize I WAS THE ONE making half those complaints! It drops constantly, all hours of the day and night. They haven't cut us off yet, but if they do, the Big Dog shall bark. And bark. And bark some more. In the meantime, I will continue being the good neighbor, listening most of the time, running barefoot mostly, not stomping on the unwashed masses of ham neighbors who do not seem to return the favor, and being kind, truthful, clean, and a revenant, or reverent, I forget. Thanks to everyone who replied, I'll let you know how it plays out. 73, Eric WD6DBM On Thu, Aug 6, 2020 at 5:28 PM, Joseph M. Get on 20 meters at legal limit all day, see if he comes back. If so, it is almost certainly their problem. If not, the problem is probably in your house somewhere. It could be their equipment (I have comcast for the Internet, but don't use their equipment, but most people do), but, you'll have a hard time making the case. Many 75 ohm wiring jobs are just done poorly but whatever cheap contractor was doing it in your neighborhood and you may need to do some work on it. If it is old, just run some good new RG6 and quality F type connectors. You could be getting into the cable through your home AC wiring too, so make sure that you've choked those power cords too. If it is still happening after all of that, look into a high pass filter, I'm not sure if those will work these days, you'll really have to get into the specs of your cable service for that. I don't run legal limit but I do run my HF antenna indoors, had some trouble with my own internet connection, but never got a visit from comcast myself, my fix was grounding the splitter where the cable came into my house, but I also ran some new RG6 from the splitter to the cable modem and replaced the cheap F connectors with good ones. 73 de Joe NE3R On Thu, Aug 6, 2020 at 5:32 PM eric norris via Elecraft wrote: Dear Gang: While looking at Europe banging in on 20m FT8 this morning, I switched over to CW, cruised the band, then called CQ DX for a while. [Elecraft] K4 question +12m SOLVED
I am surrounded by hams in my suburban neighborhood, one new ham two blocks away who is S9+20db when he runs qrp. I pray he doesn't learn cw. My question is, what model of K4 will supply the same blocking dynamic range equal to or better than the K3S? The K4HD? I need RF protection! Every day is Field Day here. On another topic, I took the advice of someone on this list who suggested my best solution to my 12m antenna problem was to throw up a low dipole with bubble gum and duct tape. I threw up a 12m inverted V, apex at 18ft, ends at about 12ft, with zip ties, a watering can holding down one end, a ladder on the other, and a fiberglass mast tied to the wrought iron grating on the front porch with clothsline (xyl lost her marbles when I said I was going on the roof) in four back-breaking hours with big help from Terry, WB6PVU. RG8x feedline coming through the front window with open coils on the living room floor made the xyl ecstatic and kept the cats amused Today I waited for hours for propagation to come up, and as soon as I could reliably hear VP6R, I started banging away with the K3 and KPA500 squeakin' from the freakin', steam coming off the rg8x. Now I'm in their log on 12m cw! [Elecraft] KPA1500 RFI on 12m
My Force 12 C3 antenna is not resonant on 12m. Using the K3 barefoot, the internal atu tunes the antenna fine. Bypassing the K3 atu, but still running barefoot into the KPA1500 atu, the KPA atu loses it's mind and goes in and out of TUNE mode uncommanded. Even though the KPA has found a match, trying to transmit through it at the 100w level is impossible because of the constant retuning. I have put my small collection of mix-31 ferrites on the antenna output, input, and KPA control line at the KPA, each at a time, with no success. Any ideas? I would like to be able to run the KPA at least a few hundred watts to have the proverbial snowball's chance to break the VP6R pileup on 12m CW. [Elecraft] An ode to K3 #2545--no useful info here
Due to my mobility issues, I have two stations set up in my house--one with a newer K3S, and one with my old buddy K3 #2545. Number 2545 has been upgraded over the years several times, and about a year ago I sent her back to the mothership to get the full set of upgrades that became available with the K3S. However, for whatever reason--maybe 10 years of fiddling with every single setting, or maybe just that the K3S is in an electrically noisier part of the house--I can still pull signals out of the noise more easily with the old girl. It sounds silly, but I'm really attached to her. Maybe it's just because she was the first radio I ever owned in nearly a half-century of hamming that was state-of-the art. Maybe it's because she and her brick-wall roofing filters allowed me to get back on 2m EME when a new, very loud local station completely wiped me off the air with my old radio. For whatever reason, K3 #2545 will always be my favorite radio. I hope we're together for many years to come--even if she gets a K4 sibling eventually. Thanks, Elecraft. [Elecraft] KPA1500 PSU FAN ISSUE RESOLVED
The squealing PSU fan issue was so bad, I didn't turn the KPA1500 on for many months. When I finally did, the squeal was gone. Since it did not turn up on burn-in, I can only guess that some jostling in shipping did something. After hours of running it has not come back. Better yet, with the piercing high-pitch scream gone, my Bose noise-cancelling phones again give me a quiet shack This is ironic. Amid many complaining about KPA1500 fan noise, my complaints of what turned out to be a defect condition got lost. The same thing happened to me with my KPA500, which made a house-filling buzzing sound. At that time many were complaining about the KPA500 buzz. I finally arranged a call with support, and was told as soon as I powered it up that that is not normal. In that case, support sent me a slightly different transformer bolt, and some different washers--problem solved. In the KPA1500 case, supoort sent me a new led board, and a 50v output resistor as well as new fans. Once I got the psu cover off, I saw that replacing the fans was beyond my current fine motor skills. The hive mind suggested taking sound readings with the Sound Meter app, so for those who care, here are the pre and post led board replacement numbers. I only wish I would have thought of this while that puppy was howling. Old board: quiet shack 3am 2.5 ft above fans 33db. KPA1500 in idle: 47db. Same cdx, new board quiet shack 33db, KPA1500 at idle: 42db. Noticeably quieter. Quieter than one of my AL800Hs. Quieter than Boudicca the cat purring. Now the sun is shining, my faith in Elecraft is restored, and I love the KPA1500 again. I should have known Elecraft would not release an amplifier that sounded like a 737 on throttle up. 73 Eric WD6DBM Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Supply Fan Noise
More broadly, has there been any progress on reducing the piercing power supply fan noise on the KPA1500 when only using it as a tuner or an antenna switch? I complained about this a year ago, and I find it completely unacceptable. No set of noise-reducing headphones that I have tried works well enough to make the noise tolerable. I've tried moving the PS deck around with minimal improvement. This just doesn't seem to fit Elecraft's philosophy of a quiet operating environment. Why do these fans have to operate at full throttle when there is minimal current draw from the rf deck? Why do these fans create such a piercing high-pitched note? If there is no response from Elecraft, what have other ops done--short of moving the PS into an adjoining room--to mitigate the scream? [Elecraft] HF Stealth Loops
Anyone interested in magloops should visit www.alexloop.com by Alex, PY1AHD. He has really pioneered the popularity of small, portable loops and has built many experimental loops. There is a video of him setting up an AlexLoop in 90 seconds (not rushed) at www.alexloop.com A magloop inside a backpack next to the human body probably won't work because the loop is detuned by the human, and that tuning varies with the distance. If you are walking, tuning would be difficult because the pack will jiggle, varying the distance--unless you could glide motionless over the ground (or water). I suspect Wayne could do this, but probably not in public. Even when you use a magloop on a tripod, you have to tune it using an offset so it is in the right place when you step away. This quickly becomes intuitive once you know how much, and which way, to turn the tuning capacitor. However, a loop mounted above the backpack, say on a folding stick, works and has been done. See www.alexloop.com A small loop does work--I have made contacts on a 3ft diameter AlexLoop on 40m SSB with 5w. On 20m, it could be smaller and still work, though obviously with less efficiency. The advantage of magloops is their small size, quick setup, and needing neither a counterpoise nor more height above ground than one loop diameter. If you go to a public park and want to talk to a ranger, setting up a magloop will materialize one as if by magic. Magloops are terrific chick magnets, kid magnets, and will get you in heated arguments with people who have never used one. I have no commercial relationship with Alex, PY1AHD, but I count him as a mentor and friend. Really, look at the portable magloops on his website. www.alexloop.com 73 Eric WD6DBM Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX3 Rechargeable Batteries
You must measure the batteries under load. The no-load voltage is almost meaningless. You must use NiMH batteries in the KX3 if you are using the internal charger. The best way to test them is to use an external battery charger built for RC that accomodates NiMH chemistry, and can both charge and discharge multiple cycles, and has a top-off low current cycle built in. This will balance the pack. Take the batts out of the kx3, put them in an empty battery holder, and run them through three charge/discharge cycles. The charger will show their true capacity. Running several cycles will build up their capacity a bit. I use only Eneloops. Regular NiMH batts can lose all their capacity in a few days, and if you let them sit too long, they are ruined. Eneloops can hold 80% of their capacity for many months. All batteries have a finite life. I am sure others will disagree. This is my (considerable) experience with NiMH. YMMV. 73 Eric WD6DBM Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] [KAT500] Odd KAT500 Behavior
I am using an early KAT500 with a K3S. When using WSPR in band-hopping mode at 5w, WSJT-X 2.0 commands a band change and transmit, the K3S starts transmitting, then stops, changes bands, then changes back to the original band, say 40 meters. I think this part is a WSJT problem, and has been reported. Now the K3 is on 40m. If I press the TUNE button in WSPR, the SWR meter shows a high SWR and relays click in the KAT500. If I press TUNE again, the swr is good. The KAT500 is configured to follow the K3 vfo, so why is the KAT500 retuning? If the K3 shows 40m, why wouldn't the KAT500 have the proper tuning solution? It is properly cabled with auxbus cables between the K3, KAT500, and KPA500 in that order (the KPA500 is off). The KAT3 is in bypass mode. [Elecraft] 6m Meteor Scatter
John, The best time for meteor scatter is at night or early morning. At that time, your side of the Earth is facing the direction of the Earth revolving around the Sun, increasing the speed at which meteors and dust plow into the ionosphere, giving better "burns." The worst time is around noon. For general info, Google "meteor scatter." Read the WSJT-X manual. It is pure gold. MSK144 encodes and decodes very differently than FT8. The best direction depends on where you live. If you are in Texas hill country, your best directions may be your lowest horizons. If you are in the flats, anywhere. You will also get a big help from ground gain. Experiment. Here in the South SF Bay, my best direction is north, because it is flat that direction, and I can work CA, OR, WA, and BC. You will need to use RC5 MSK144. While the FT8 crowd are still using mostly 1.9.1, ping jockeys upgrade immediately. 'Cause they're cool. (Just kidding. I have DXCC and WAS on FT8). The best way to get started is to make schedules on the Ping Jockey site https://www.pingjockey.net/cgi-bin/pingtalk. Ask questions, people are happy to help. Some ops never get on Ping Jockey, and you can make random contacts. Those are the most fun. Another great thing about MSK144 is that it will work with a NB. Being in Silicon Valley, I ride my K3's NB controls like a bucking bronc. But early in the morning noise is usually low, except for my idiot neighbor's "pest repeller." MS is good year-round. I have been on during meteor showers when there was no increase in "rocks." I have also been on during meteor showers when it was totally insane. Be very patient. I have worked guys in one minute. I worked a guy last week that took an hour--40 minutes for the final exchange. That was a massive burn lasting 10 seconds. Go figure. It is a lot like working QRP--some days you get skunked, some days you get 599+10 with your KX1. [Elecraft] KPA fans in digital modes
I, too, use FAN2 for both the KPA500 and KPA1500 in digital modes. Both amps run considerably cooler and with less thermal variation. It would be great if the PF1 or PF2 keys on the KPA1500 could be used to toggle into a preset FAN2 (or choose your poison) when pounding away on digital modes like MSK144 for meteor scatter on 6m. I don't know if it would be possible to do something similar for one of the keys on the KPA500--perhaps the AUX band switch? For both amps I switch back to FAN NOR for casual CW use. For all of you out there with even a 3el beam and 100w on 6m, please try meteor scatter using MSK144--you can make contacts every day out to 1500km or more, even without a clear horizon. Schedules optional at the Ping Jockey website. However, I noticed on the TATX1 that although it has a threaded hole for attaching radial wire(s), there is no thumbscrew provided, nor is there any mention in the instruction sheet as to what the thread size is. [Elecraft] Most rewarding/Craziest QSO
In 2014 I was on a kayaking trip in the Johnstone Strait/Queen Charlotte Strait off Vancouver Island. I brought my KX3 along, and one evening I had a few spare minutes while camped near the Sophie Islands. I threw my wire up in a very wet tree, and laid out a counterpoise on wet, thick underbrush. I didn't have a chance. I tuned around a bit on 40 CW, and to my astonishment heard a guy also camping out on a lake in Arizona, having a QSO with another station. When they were done I called him, signing WD6DBM/VE7. He kept calling QRZ QRZ, but eventually we made it. What a thrill! Wire in a tree to wire in a tree! Later that night I fell asleep to the sounds of a sleeping Northern Resident Orca pod in a cove a few hundred feet away from me (5 adults, 2 calves from their breathing patterns), and the noise of a cruise ship 5 miles away whose engines I could hear coming through my sleeping platform. 73 Eric WD6DBM Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] The KX1 Now and Forever
Before ths thread dies, I wanted to add my voice. The KX1 is the most compact, brilliantly designed radio a normal person can build. Without the KX1, there is no gateway drug to the K2. The KX1 has everything you need, and nothing you don't. A good receiver, a good filter, obscenely low power consumption, AND A FREAKING LOG READING LIGHT! THAT IS THE HAM EQUIVALENT TO SHARKS WITH LASER BEAMS ON THEIR FRICKING HEADS. I understand that Elecraft can't make the money work with a rig with a very niche market. So how about a KX0, or KX9000 in todays marketing bull. Make it one band. Make it 5 watts. Make it buildable by real people, no smds. Allow me to use this simple comparison: What the K2 is to the HW-8, let the KX9000 be to a Rockmite, a DC40, or similar. You could use the same cool cases made by American Morse! You could cram in a decent receiver, QSK (natch), maybe band modules? Then maybe a same size ATU? If you design it, we will build it. The possibilities are endless! 73 Eric WD6DBM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Baker Island, the K3, and APF
I managed to get Baker Island in the log on 15-80 meters on FT8 (it took BOTH the KAT500 and KAT3 for 60m, but that's another story). I had filled some other slots, too. What I really wanted was 40 CW, my favorite band from my Novice days in the the 70s. I camped out on 7023 for hours, sometimes nearly all night. I just couldn't quite hear them well enough on my vertical to call. Then last night, around 2:30 am PDT, I heard them coming up. I tried every cw filter width, in between, nothing quite worked. Then I remembered way back when Wayne had announced the new APF feature for the K3-- I had never used it, but I remembered the raves about it. I punched up APF, and BANG I could hear them! Some calls later, they were in the log. They went QRT around 5am PDT. Damn. That was fun. 73 Eric WD6DBM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

While trying to run my KPA500 at full-tilt--but as cool as possible--in digital modes, I have noticed over the years that: 1). The KPA500 actually runs cooler at just-below-fault power output than it does at either 500 or even 400 watts output. 2) The KPA500 runs substanitally cooler at a 1:1 SWR than it does at even 1.2:1. My KAT500 is the hub of my station. I can switch one of numerous radios into it, it then selects the proper antenna and tuning solution with a single dit from non-Elecraft gear. I can bring my KX2 into the living room in the comfort of my LazyBoy, and in the shack the KAT500 does the tuning and antenna switching remotely while I band hop with no extra cable. Marvelous. I was very disappointed that the KPA1500 only has two antenna sockets. So, dear Elecraft, hear my plea:. Take all the good parts of the KAT500, perhaps add a 4th antenna position and multiple inputs that switch themselves automatically. Add the same tight integration with the KPA1500. [Elecraft] DirecTV RFI
I was an early adopter of DirecTV due to my hatred of the local cable company. I had to install my first dish. Over the years I've had a number of receivers that were immune to ham band signals (1500w), but had ONE that was terrible. One watt of RF on 40m would render it useless as it turned on and off, recording programs at random. Research showed this receiver was notorious for this, but DirecTV would do nothing about it, claiming it was my fault yadda yadda. I had to unplug it to get on 40m. All attempts at blocking RF from getting into the box had no effect. I finally ponied up for a different receiver/DVR, and since going HD have had zero problems. But be warned, most installers know nothing. Insist they ground the dish as the NEC requires, or they won't do it. I haven't detected noise from the system, but in my neighborhood it's often S6-S9 anyway. 73 Eric WD6DBM Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
