[Elecraft] Considering purchase of K4D
I am considering the purchase of a K4D, upgrading from K3+ ("+" means I have installed all available upgrades except the USB I/O board, but it is not quite a K3s), but I have a few questions and pardon me if these have been asked and answered before, as they probably have: 1. Other than diversity receive, what additional benefits do I get with the 'D' version (for $1000)? 2. Why is the K4D down so low on the Sherwood receiver list and does it really make a difference in a somewhat noise, semi-urban environment? Thanks in advance, Allen R. [Elecraft] K3 s/n 2324 ZERO Power Output after repair
I recently received my K3 s/n 2324 back from Elecraft after being repaired from lightning damage. The Damage was not extensive and Elecraft did some other repairs that preceded the lightning strike. However, when received I found that the KEY OUT FED Q3 was shorted (perhaps not tested by Elecraft at the factory?) so I decided to repair it myself rather than sending it back and waiting who knows how many weeks for a simple repair. Let me tell you, it was no simple task for a non-electronics tech who can't see very well any more. Of course Q3 was located on the motherboard and was buried under several other sandwiched boards and the sub-receiver.what a job (for me anyway). After putting everything back together, the KEY OUT now works but I get ZERO WATTS output. I have tried low and high power positions, CW and TUNE functions, but nothing A call to tech support, Rob suggested I check the TXIF cable connection, which I did. I checked all visible cables, everything is plugged in as required. I tried a transmitter calibration but for some reason I cannot communicate with the K3 using my RS232-USB cable, which is probably no good (Amazon) since I know the radio is communicating with other equipment just fine. Any ideas why I am now getting 0W output? I have tried everything I can think of but I am not a tech as I mentioned before. Thanks, Allen R. My K3 s/n 2324 has developed a problem with its output power. It is very non-linear especially between 12 and say about 50 watts. To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: 5064711d.3080...@gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed It depends a lot on what your computer is doing. For years I used DTR keying with N1MM and a slow computer, and I couldn't understand why people claimed that there were problems with this. But I never operate 'assisted' by Internet connections, clusters, etc. in contests. So that may be the reason it worked as well as it did. Anyway I recently got a Winkey USB, and was surprised at how much better the computer-generated CW sounded! Also, the Winkey offers PTT switching that is smoother and faster than the semi-QSK in the K3. The one downside (for me) is that I absolutely /hate/ the stand-alone keyer function. I just cannot send with it without making lots of errors, despite trying numerous settings of the paddle sensing function. I am used to mode B iambic keying, and I set all my keyers for that mode. The best one for me is the Idiom Press Logikey K3. It is better than the internal K3 keyer, which is better than the Winkey. So I still use the Logikey for my hand sending. On 9/27/2012 6:48 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Keying via DTR or RTS will work with the simple transistor circuit, but it is subject to timing problems created by the operating system. There is no way for an application to directly control a port, so the application has to pass the request to the operating system and then the operating system will control the port when it deems appropriate. That may be OK at slow CW speeds, but the timing becomes more critical at higher speeds. Enter the WinKeyer to solve that problem. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/26/2012 4:26 PM, Matt Maguire wrote: You can do it cheaper by building a simple transistor circuit that allows you computer to key the radio via the computer's RS232 serial port. On my P3, the entire noise floor is raised many S units (I'll have to switch to dB and see what it looks like. Should I expect better, or is this to be expected. Re: [Elecraft] Activate voice memories by computer
Yes, that is what I am getting at. I was hoping that someone had already come up with a solution to do this. I have a call into K4HAV. Open to any suggestions... If it can, you could use the same approach as I have documented for N1MM Logger. If not, other solutions may be possible, but would require some engineering - e.g. an additional program that can generate the commands, linked-to with autohotkey, and LP-Bridge to share access to the K3. ~iain / N6ML On Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 11:22 AM, Allen Brier N5XZ n...@earthlink.net wrote: That's what I mean, but I won't be using N1MM, but another logging program (K4HAV's Win1010 for the 10-10 contest). I wish to activate the memories via the keyboard (i.e. hot keys). Works very well. ...bill nr4c On Mon, 30 Jan 2012 11:14:00 -0600 (GMT-06:00), Allen Brier N5XZ wrote: __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
