Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft P3 Bar Cursor

2018-10-15 Thread n6hz
Hi Ed,

Are there magenta and green arrows toward the bottom of the spectrum
display? These indicate where the cursors are relative to your current
center frequency. If you are in fixed tune mode, you can easily re-center
your VFO A cursor by two consecutive long presses of the SPAN/CENTER button.

If all else fails, a memory reset can be performed by holding down the MENU
button while powering up the P3. Note that this will erase an function key
settings.

Re: [Elecraft] P3: Left span limit changes

2018-06-11 Thread n6hz
Hi Bill,

Currently the P3 stores span and reference level based on band, but not
mode. It would get pretty complicated to add mode into the mix. I know
quite a few customers have had great results with the Genovation keyboard
and setting up macros to do this. The next BETA release of P3/SVGA firmware
will include the ability to export/import macros from/to the SVGA just like
the PX3.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Lag

2017-08-16 Thread n6hz
I haven't verified this, but one thing you might try is to turn PA MODE to
OFF on the KX3. You'll then need to turn on/off the KXPA100 manually since
the KX3 will no longer be pinging the KXPA100. This should eliminate the
cursor/marker lag on the PX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Tx Mon Display

2017-08-01 Thread n6hz
Hi Roger,

No that is not possible with the current design. The TXMON feature detects
and displays the DC envelope of the RF signal. In order to display actual
RF spectrum we would need to use a different coupler (direct sampling) and
we'd also need a much faster analog to digital converter.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 VGA Question

Hi Doug,

The P3/SVGA board does its own 2048 point FFT on IQ data that is passed down
from the P3 front panel. The sampling rate is the same for either the P3's

of things like fixed tune and receive path gain calculation.

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA Digital terminal questions

2017-04-18 Thread n6hz
Hi Ken,

1) That is correct. The P3/SVGA does not actually decode any RF. All that
is done inside the radio and you must choose between any of built-in modes,
such as FSK-D, PSK-D or CW.

2) The manual instructs you to turn off text display ONLY if you're going to
use the K3 or P3 Utility's data terminal mode. Text decode on the radio
will need to be turned on (see #1 above).

3) The P3/SVGA setup screen which is accessed via Ctrl-Alt-S on an attached
keyboard is used to set a variety of settings pertaining to the keyboard
aspect of the system. For example, setting the foreground and background
colors for the text window on the SVGA screen. Also setting up the text
transmit mode, i.e. send on Enter key press, space bar key press, etc.
This controls when the text is sent to the radio to be transmitted, for
example, when the Enter key is pressed, or the space bar etc.

If you need additional help or have any questions, please email me directly.
My email is pauls at you know where dot com. (elecraft)

[Elecraft] XG3 Firmware revision 1.19 Available for download

2017-02-14 Thread n6hz
XG3 Firmware revision 1.19 has been released. Use the XG3 Utility to copy
the files from the Elecraft FTP server and perform the download to your XG3.
You can get the latest version of the XG3 Utility from our website:
http://www.elecraft.com/XG3/xg3.htm#xg3util

This revision has the ability to use 'meta-characters' in the 'W' command.
Previous versions only allowed meta-characters to be used in the Morse
Memory feature. This new feature allows a user to connect their XG3 to a
PC via the XG3 Utility and create multiple command sequences using the
'Command Tester' Utility page. Please refer to the XG3 Product Manual for
more information regarding Morse meta-characters.

Release notes:

Revision 1.19 February 6, 2017

• The serial command ‘W’ can now interpret the same meta-characters that
the
Morse memory (WM) command utilizes. This allows the XG3 Utility’s Command
Tester to invoke a variety of complex macros using the programmable buttons
in the Utility. Macros executed via the ‘W’ command can contain up to 93
characters.

Re: [Elecraft] Device data retention times

2016-11-09 Thread n6hz
Hi Len,

That certainly used to be a problem with older windowed EPROMS. I know that
it's possible for FLASH cells to flip from cosmic radiation, and cells can
go bad from repeated writing, but the bootroms we employ are loaded into
write protected memory and are usually never re-written.

There is typically no way to re-flash the bootrom without a suitable
programmer (hardware). In-field write protection of the bootrom is
critical for a robustness.

Kindly,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - utility, a question

2016-11-07 Thread n6hz
Hi Andy,

I know it can get confusing with all the different macros. The K3 can be
programmed with macros, the P3/SVGA can have keyboard macros saved using a
keyboard and each of the Utilities allows macros to be created and used with
a mouse click.

The P3/SVGA accessory board allows up to 50 macros and 50 text messages to
be stored in the SVGA card. The P3 Utility macros on the other hand are
simply macros that are used entirely within the P3 Utility, they cannot be
downloaded or programmed into the P3/SVGA. A planned future release of
P3/SVGA firmware will allow the user to export/edit/import P3/SVGA macros
using a USB memory stick.

Kindly,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Strangeness

2016-11-04 Thread n6hz
Hi Ken,

Have you checked the voltage at the P3 12V input? On some earlier K3's
(sorry I don't have the exact date), the 12V RCA jack on the back of the K3
lacked sufficient current to properly drive a P3 with the SVGA add-in board.
A good test would be to see how the P3 acts when powered directly from an
external source. If you have one of the earlier K3's you can 'order' and
install our K312MDKT mod-kit.

Kindly,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] P3 wonky on 30 meters

Hi Bob,

The first thing I would try is to perform a parameter reset on the P3. Note
that this will erase any settings such as FN keys etc that you have
programmed, so you may want to save the configuration with P3 Utility or
write them down.

To perform the parameter reset, turn off the P3 and then while holding down

please contact Elecraft Customer Service via phone or email. Their email is

Re: [Elecraft] [PX3] Does not respond to the knob being rotated

2016-10-19 Thread n6hz
Hi Brian,

The PX3 encoder interface was changed in revision 1.25 (4/17/2015). This
change greatly enhanced the operation of the select knob encoder. If you're
experiencing severe 'jerkiness' of the encoder, it's usually a sign that the
encoder is bad. It would however be interesting to see what your PX3 would
do with older firmware. Email me directly if you'd be interested in trying
that out. My email is pauls at you know where dot com.

Re: [Elecraft] SVGA/P3 Question -Waterfall Height Problem

2016-10-18 Thread n6hz
Hi Irwin,

Looks like you found a bug. But as a work around I would suggest setting
the SVGA waterfall height to operate on its own, independent of the P3's
waterfall height. To do that, press the MENU button on the front of the P3
and using the encoder, select SVGA Menu. Then select 'WfEn' and change it
to 'Waterfall on'. In this mode, the SVGA's waterfall is controlled
independently from the P3's waterfall. To adjust the SVGA waterfall, use
SVGA Menu>WfHt. To adjust the P3's waterfall, use the regular P3 menu
selection 'Waterfall'

Also note that in this 'separate mode'. the SVGA screen 'unfollows' the P3's
waterfall average, waterfall color, and waterfall markers settings. Refer
to page 44 of the current P3 manual (revision H, available on our website)
for more information.

Kindly,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] XG3 Calibration from 10MHz Standard?

2016-09-19 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Please realize that while the XG3 can be calibrated, it does not employ a
temperature compensated or ovenized crystal oscillator as is found in higher
end test equipment. The unit can be susceptible to temperature swings,
holding it in your hand for several minutes, for example, will affect the
output frequency by a few Hertz.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 BETA 1.45 firmware now available

There is a known bug with the macro import feature. As a work around, after
the macros have been exported to a file, you will need to rename the file

Also, the PX3 does not support flash drives that have been formatted using

Re: [Elecraft] [PX3] Carrier Null

2016-06-02 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Joel,

It sounds like you might be confusing the Rx null for the KX3 with the
opposite side band nulling for the PX3. (easy since they both are
'nulling') . If you are interested in removing opposite side bands from the
display of the PX3, follow the PX3 OSB nulling procedures as noted in the
PX3 manual. As others have mentioned, be sure to plug that little I/Q
connector firmly into the KX3. It is common to have it only partially
seated which only feeds one of the I/Q signals into the PX3.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3: Apparent "bug" fw 1.42

2016-05-05 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Grant,

Glad you are enjoying your PX3. The PX3's display driver hardware limits
the maximum size of the waterfall window. The text display window, when
active, uses part of the waterfall window. In the next revision of PX3
firmware you'll see that I added support to keep track of the waterfall
heights with regards to the different modes. This feature and others
including alternate keys for scratchpad, will be available in the next beta
release.

[Elecraft] P3/SVGA 1.60/1.34 General Release, Now Available

2016-03-24 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
P3/SVGA 1.60/1.34 Firmware is now available as a general release. Please be
sure to download, install and use the latest version of P3 Utility which can
be found here:
http://www.elecraft.com/software/P3/P3_Utility_Setup_1_16_3_15.exe

Currently our tech writer is in the process of updating the P3/SVGA manual.
In the meantime, please refer to the release notes which I have also
included below. The main features of this release are the ability to
include P3 commands in SVGA keyboard macros, new #RCF (relative center
frequency) command, support for the K3S preamp/attenuator stages, as well as
several important bug fixes.

Very 73,
Paul n6hz

MCU 01.60 / 3-21-2016

Version 01.60 requires SVGA firmware 01.34 to support all SVGA features.

* P3 commands in keyboard macros: Added support to allow P3 commands to be
embedded in SVGA keyboard macros. When entering a keyboard macro using a
USB keyboard attached to the P3/SVGA, P3 commands can now be intermixed with
K3 commands by preceding the with the '#' character. Example: set up a
macro to set the K3 to PSK31, frequency 14.070, P3 span of 100 kHz, fixed
tune enabled:
FA0001407;MD6;DT3;#SPN001000;#FXT1;

* SVGA keyboard macros as function keys: The first 8 SVGA keyboard macros
can now be executed from the 8 front panel function keys. First, using a
keyboard, program the macro and make sure to save it into one of the first 8
locations (mem 1 - 8). Then on the P3, press the MENU button and using the
encoder, select the SVGA menu and press the encoder to enter. Then using the
encoder, choose "Macro 1" through "Macro 8", then press the function key
(short tap or long hold) to map the macro to the function key.

* Enable/disable TX sensing at the TxMon coupler: Added TxSensEn to TxMon
sub-menu. This allows enabling/disabling of transmit sensing at the
coupler. For K3 and K3S users, TxSensEn can be set to "disabled", which
will use the serial connection from the K3 to determine the TX state.
Setting TxSensEn to "enabled" will use forward power sensed at the TxMon
coupler to determine TX state (useful for non-Elecraft radios).

* New #RCF command: "Relative Center Frequency" applies an offset to the
center frequency based on the passed argument. Usage: #RCFsnn; Where:
's' is the sign + or -, nn is the offset in Hz. For example, if the P3
is set to a 30 kHz span and you would like to position the cursor on the
left edge: #RCF+015000; Using #RCF without any arguments returns the
difference in Hz between the center frequency and the vfo frequency.

* K3S attenuator support: The P3 now properly scales the display when the
four-step attenuator in the K3S is enabled.

* SWR meter blanked: Both the analog and digital SWR displays are now
blanked whenever the transmit power is too low to give a valid reading.

* Serial #DSM command: The Display Mode (#DSM) command now controls the
Transmit Monitor's power/SWR meter display as well as enabling and disabling
the waterfall window. #DSM0 = Spectrum display only, #DSM1 = Spectrum +
waterfall, #DSM2 = Spectrum + meters, #DSM3 = Spectrum + waterfall + meters.

* New #FON command: The display font can now be selected via a serial
command. #FON0 = 5 x 7 pixels, #FON1 = 7 x 11 pixels, #FON2 = 9 x 14
pixels.

* New #XCV command: The transceiver type can now be selected via a serial
command. #XCV00 = "K3", #XCV01 = User-defined, #XCV03 = 455 kHz IF, etc.
The command uses the same number order as in the "Xcvr Sel" menu item.

* Transceiver definition bug fix - Exiting: When exiting the "Xcvr Def"
menu page, if the user-defined transceiver is already selected, it will
reflect the new values inmmediately, rather than having to re-select it.

* Transceiver definition bug fix - IF Invert: The USER transceiver that is
defined in the "Xcvr Def" menu item may now specify "Not inverted" IF tuning
even if the "K3" control language is selected.

* SVGA resolution / main waterfall bug fix: The main waterfall height had
been switching to the default value after changing SVGA resolution.

* VFO B cursor = VFO DATA A bug: The VFO B cursor had been matching the VFO
A cursor in DATA A mode, even when VFO B was in a different mode.

* Bitmap Upload bug: Fixes a bug in which the waterfall area was omitted
from a bitmap capture when the TXMON meters were visible.

P3SVGA 01.34 / 3-21-2016

* Center Frequency in Tracking mode: Fixed an old bug that caused the VFO A
cursor to reset to center of screen when VFO A was tuned after the user had
adjusted the center frequency offset using the CENTER function in tracking
mode.

* SVGA Keyboard:
Added support to allow P3 commands to be embedded in SVGA keyboard
macros.
Added support so P3 can execute keyboard macros from front panel

function keys.
Keyboard / USB thumbdrive can be used when n

* Adds: #RCF command: “Relative Center Frequency” applies an offset to the
center frequency based on the passed argument. Usage: #RCFsnn; Where:
‘s’ is the sign + or -, nn is the offset in Hz. For example, if the PX3
is set to a 30 kHz span and you would like to position the cursor on the
left edge: #RCF+015000; Using #RCF without any arguments returns the
difference in Hz between the center frequency and the vfo frequency.

* Fixes/Adds: Removed replay buffer and its controls and in its place added
a “scratchpad” to hold temporary text such as call signs, names, etc. Text
may be added to the scratch pad by first pressing the Insert key. The
scratchpad is cleared each time it is opened. To move the scratchpad
contents to the Tx buffer, press Ctrl-Insert. Pressing Ctrl-H when the
scratchpad is open, displays a help screen. To exit the scratchpad, press
Esc, Enter or Insert. You may also press a text macro assigned key which
will execute after exiting the scratchpad. To embed the scratchpad contents
in a text message, use \s . The scratchpad holds one line of text. It is
erased after each power cycle.

* Fixes: USB/LSB passband inversion when using transverters.

* Fixes: an issue when using the ‘|’ command (IM) with text message strings
shorter than 10 characters. The IM character is now correctly interpreted
which should solve the problem of truncated strings.

* Fixes: Keyboard help screen being overwritten by spectrum trace and grid.

* Fixes: Full Tx keyboard buffer overflow issue in which buffer could not be
sent with Enter.

Very 73,

Paul n6hz

Re: [Elecraft] P3_SVGA Refresh Rate

2016-03-21 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Dave,

The slowest update rate will be when the SVGA is running 1920x1024 and in
fixed tune. Try going to a lower resolution (which will still look pretty
good on a hi-res monitor). I usually run 1280x1024 or 1440x900. The SVGA
is performing a 2048 point FFT, while the P3 is 1024, there's also
considerable overhead when in fixed tune mode which adds to the slowdown.

Kind regards,

Paul

[Elecraft] P3 v1.59 & SVGA v1.33 BETA now available for download

2016-03-14 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
haracter '|' for
better handling of short text messages.

*** Scratchpad: Removed "replay buffer" and replaced it with a scratchpad
memory. To use the Scratchpad memory, press the Insert key. A one line
window will pop up and allow text to be entered. Press Enter, Esc or Insert
to exit the scratchpad. Scratchpad text can be sent by pressing
Ctrl-Insert, or embedded in a text message using \s . You can also exit
the scratchpad by pressing a predefined text message key. This is handy for
inserting a call sign into a preformatted message.

Example: create a text message that contains: "\s de wa6hhq ur 5nn k" and
assign it to the F5 key. Now to quickly respond to a calling station, press
Insert, then enter the call sign of the station, for example N6KR and then
press F5. The call sign entered in the scratchpad will be entered into the
message and transmitted.

***Message counter adjustable field width: Message counter now takes an
optional precision value that controls how many digits are converted. The
existing operation of \c in a text message would print the message counter
using all 5 digits. Now \c can be followed by a number from 1 to 9 which
setsthe minimum number of digits displayed.
For example, if the current contents of the message counter is 27, \c2
would display 27, while \c4 would display 0027.

*** Multiple \c in a text message does not increment the counter: In the
past each time the \c was used, the message counter would increment. This
has been fixed so that the message counter only increments after the message
is completed.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 v1.57 / SVGA v1.31 BETA firmware available

2016-02-26 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Dave,

The P3 does execute the commands one after another. The problem is likely
that the K3 commands take a little longer to execute and there is no waiting
in the P3 for the K3 to change frequency. In other words, the P3 executes
the serial commands in sequence. It gets to a K3 command (DN7, UP7 etc) and
simply sends that over to the K3. It then continues to execute the commands
in the macro. Using the P3 and/or K3 utility delivers the same results as
would any program (Python, etc) that does not query the K3 for a reply.

While adding a delay after the K3 commands may help, there is probably a
better way to do this. Let me think about it for a while.

Kind regards,

Paul

[Elecraft] P3 v1.57 / SVGA v1.31 BETA firmware available

2016-02-25 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
BETA firmware packages for the P3 & SVGA are now available for download from
the Elecraft website. These BETA versions contain new features as well as
several bug fixes. With these versions we introduce the ability to embed P3
commands within SVGA keyboard macros. Also new is the ability to map the
first 8 keyboard macros to any of the 8 FN keys located on the front panel
of the P3.

Refer to the release notes below for more information

Please direct all issues/questions/etc to:
alan at you know where dot com

Paul n6hz

To load beta firmware on to your P3/SVGA:
1) Create a temporary folder.
2) Download the beta firmware from:
ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/P3/firmware/beta/P3_0157_SVGA_0131_BETA.zip
3) Extract the contents of the zip file into the temporary folder.
4) With your P3 connected via serial cable, start P3 Utility and select the
Firmware Tab
5) Click on Browse and select the temporary folder that holds the extracted
files.
6) Click on "Send all new firmware to P3"

Release notes:

MCU 01.57 / 2-2-2016

Version 01.57 requires SVGA firmware 01.31 to support all SVGA features.

* P3 commands in keyboard macros: Added support to allow P3 commands to be
embedded in SVGA keyboard macros. When entering a keyboard macro using a
USB keyboard attached to the P3/SVGA, P3 commands can now be intermixed with
K3 commands by preceding the command with the ‘#’ character. Example: set
up a macro to set the K3 to PSK31, frequency 14.070, P3 span of 100 kHz,
fixed tune enabled:
FA0001407;MD6;DT3;#SPN001000;#FXT1;

* SVGA keyboard macros as function keys: The first 8 SVGA keyboard macros
can now be executed from the 8 front panel function keys. First, using a
keyboard, program the macro and make sure to save it into one of the first 8
locations (mem 1 – 8). Then on the P3, press the MENU button and using the
encoder, select the SVGA menu and press the encoder to enter. Then using the
encoder, choose “Macro 1” through “Macro 8”, then press the function key
(short tap or long hold) to map the macro to the function key.

* Enable/disable TX sensing at the TxMon coupler: Added TxSensEn to TxMon
sub-menu. This allows enabling/disabling of transmit sensing at the
coupler. For K3 and K3S users, TxSensEn can be set to “disabled”, which
will use the serial connection from the K3 to determine the TX state.
Setting TxSensEn to “enabled” will use forward power sensed at the TxMon
coupler to determine TX state (useful for non-Elecraft radios).

P3SVGA 01.31 / 2-3-2016

* SVGA Keyboard
Added support to allow P3 commands to be embedded in SVGA keyboard macros.
Added support so P3 can execute keyboard macros from front panel function
keys.
Keyboard / USB thumbdrive can be used when not in data display mode.

Cleaned up the text message sending, and use of the IM character ‘|’ for
better
handling of short text messages.

-end

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - SVGA USB Serendipitous Solution

Hi Ken,

I don't understand what you mean by 'toggle a USB device'. The P3/SVGA
board will enumerate a USB keyboard or thumb drive even if the SVGA en is
turned off (the display is turned off) OR data display mode is turned off.
I just checked. You can verify that by opening up the P3 and looking on
the SVGA card. Whenever a USB device is correctly enumerated, the LED
toward the connector will light solid.

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA help..

2016-01-15 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
There are LEDs on the P3 front panel and on the SVGA board, both should be
blinking. If you plug a keyboard or USB thumbdrive into the SVGA board, you
should see another LED light up on the SVGA board.

The next thing to try is a parameter reset on the P3. Do that holding down
the MENU key and then tapping the POWER key. This will reinitialize any
settings so you may first want to save the P3 configuration using the P3
Utility.

Next check the revisions of the all the FPGA files located on the SVGA
board. You mentioned that you upgraded the firmware, but maybe one of these
files could be corrupted (they control the video chip). Rotate the encoder
to the SVGA sub-menu and then enter it. Rotate the encoder to select SVGA
FW and select using a push of the encoder. You should see 1.04 in FPGA 0 to
FPGA 4.

If none of that works, email me directly at Elecraft. My email address is
pauls at you know where dot com.

Kind regards,

Re: [Elecraft] P3 CW Decoding doesn't match K3

2015-11-13 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Paul,

I read your post that you do not have the K3 Utility running, but 1) is your
P3 hooked up to your computer and 2) is there any software running on your
computer that would be reading the text such as a terminal program, or the
P3 Utility?

The P3/SVGA simply gets a copy of the K3's decoded text and displays it on
the screen. There is no separate decoding being done on the SVGA card.
Therefore the problem is likely in the serial port between the K3 and P3, or
some other program is fighting for the data. Check the serial cable between
the K3 and P3. If you're still having trouble, email me directly at
Elecraft. My email is pauls at you know where dot com.

Re: [Elecraft] feature request PX3 keyboard VFO control

2015-11-10 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi George,

You bet you can control the VFO with the PX3 keyboard. Here's what I have
set up on my PX3:

I use the UP/Down, Ctrl-Up/Down, Left/Right and Ctrl-Left/Right. I have
the up/down keys adjust the frequency by 1 Hz, Ctrl-up/down by 10 Hz,
Right/Left arrow by 100 Hz and Ctrl-Right/Left arrow by 1 kHz:

Up Arrow: UP1;
Down Arrow: DN1;

Ctrl-Up Arrow: UP;
Ctrl-Down Arrow: DN;

Right Arrow: UP8;
Left Arrow: DN8;

Ctrl-Right Arrow: UP4;
Ctrl-Left Arrow: DN4;

If you have a numeric keypad on your keyboard, you can use those keypad keys
as band buttons. For example, you can map KP0 (keypad 0) to BN0; KP1 to
BN1; and so on. Those 10 keys get you from 160 to 10 meters. Some day
when I have some extra time here at Elecraft I'll put together some tips on
macros. :-)

Kind regards,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] feature request PX3 keyboard VFO control

2015-11-10 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
And the BN commands must be 2 digits. (I just added those) So 160 meters is
BN00; and so on.

Also, you can set up a macro to turn both the KX3 and PX3 off with one
button push on the PX3 front panel. First program a macro using one of the
first 8 memory locations with the following:
PS0;#PS0; Map it to a front panel FN key using the Text Menu sub-menu,
(see manual).

Here's another trick a customer came up with. Let's say you're working a
pileup with the PX3, you have it set up for split on CW and you want to
inject your call sign very quickly. This can be done by setting up a
keyboard macro to execute on a FN keypress:
1) Create a macro in one of the first 8 locations so it can be mapped to a
FN key.
2) We'll use your call sign as an example. For the message body enter: KY
NE1I;
3) Now using the Text Menu sub-menu, program that macro to a FN key.

Now it's just a matter of using the PX3 VFO Marker to choose a position in
the pileup, push the encoder to QSY, followed by FN key to quickly send your
call.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 goes to different band when control knob is tapped.

2015-11-09 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Gary,

You can try a parameter reset on the P3. This will reinitialize everything
to its default state. This will also erase any FN keys you have set up. To
perform the reset, hold down the MENU key and then tap the POWER key. I
haven't been able to duplicate this problem here on my unit, but if figure
out the steps to making it happen, please email me directly. (pauls at you

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 and CW

2015-10-16 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Jan,

Make sure that you do not have the PX3 Utility active while you are trying
to use the PX3 keyboard, or vice verse. The KX3's CW decode can only be
'fed' to one place. You will certainly see dropped characters if the
utility is active while using the keyboard.

Re: [Elecraft] Guidance Please: XG3 Signal Source Sending CW String

Hi Jeff,

You only need to send the "PF,01,01" one time. That command is used to set
the programmable function of the PF 1 key. So if you want to have the PF1
key go back to a sweep function, use PF,01,00; Also, you can simply set the
WPM one time using the WP,nn; command. Unfortunately the XG3 hasn't enough
non-volatile memory for another CW memory.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 reverse or inverted tuning display; wrong direction, new owner

2015-10-05 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Charly,

It sounds like what you want is to enable Fixed Tune mode. In Fixed
Tune, the spectrum is stationary and the VFO A (and/or B) cursors move
up and down. To turn on fixed tune mode, press the menu button, then
using the encoder, select the menu item "FixTrack" . Pushing the
encoder in will toggle between Tracking and Fixed. You can also map a
function key to toggle between Fixed and Tracking. Refer to the manual
on how to set a function key.

Kind regards,

Paul

A 'parameter reset' should solve the problem. Hold down the MENU button

Re: [Elecraft] K3/P3 External Keyboard Question

2015-09-29 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Check to make sure you do not have a blank macro or blank text message
set up for those keys.

To check the text messages: Press Ctrl-Alt-T and then use the up/down
arrows to scroll through the list, look for the 1, 2 or 3 keycode.
To check the macros: Press Ctrl-Alt-M and then do the same thing.

Did you buy the P3 used?

Hi Ken,

First make sure the cables between the PX3 and the KX3 are firmly plugged in
on both the KX3 and PX3 sides. Pay attention to the I/Q 2.5mm cable.
During adjustment, move the encoder slowly, the adjustment values are
usually small.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - still in trouble with new firmware

2015-08-03 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Stephen,

Try performing a parameter reset (MENU+PWR) and see if that fixes the
problem. You will lose all your function key settings so you might want to
write them down beforehand. Almost all SVGA parameters are saved within the
P3, let me know if the param reset fixes it.

2015-08-03 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Guy,

The issue you are reporting with the SVGA screen going blue and showing the
Rx/Tx window size can happen if you didn't upgrade the SVGA to 1.24 . The
SVGA noise blanker was added in 1.24 . (actually it was put out as a beta
earlier, but we pulled it back to fix some other issues).

Can you verify that the SVGA is at 1.24 (do that in the SVGA submenu) and
let me know. My email is pauls at you know where dot come.

[Elecraft] P3TXMON Important Information Regarding Firmware

2015-08-03 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
If you purchased an Elecraft P3TXMON accessory board for your P3, you will
need to download and install the 1.50 P3 BETA firmware release into your P3
(see instructions below). The P3TXMON will ONLY work with firmware
versions 1.50 or above.

Download and install BETA firmware for your P3:

NOTE: Beta test firmware may have new issues that we haven't caught during
field testing. Please report them to k3supp...@elecraft.com.

Follow these steps to load a P3 beta firmware release:

1. Create a new folder for the beta firmware on your Desktop or some other
easily found location. (Don't use the same folder you use for the regular
firmware release; you may want to keep those files around in case you decide
to go back to that revision.)

2. In a web browser, type in this URL:

   ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/P3/firmware/beta

NOTE: On some computers, it may take some time for a directory of the beta
files to appear. If you do not see the correct files, press 'refresh' on
your browser to reload the page.

You should see the file: P3-0150_SVGA-0124BETA.zip If you do not see this
version of the zip file, press the RELOAD / REFRESH button on your browser
to update your browser cache.

3. Right-click on the .zip file containing the beta firmware (e.g.
P3-0150_SVGA-0124BETA.zip). Save the file to your beta folder.

4. Unzip the files into the beta folder.

5. Enter the path to the beta folder in P3 Utility (Local folder for
firmware files).

6. Make sure you *DO NOT* check the P3 Utility box titled Copy new files
from Elecraft server.

7. Click on Check versions now. Your P3 must be connected to the computer
and turned on.

8. Review the release notes (under the Help pull-down menu).

9. Click Send all firmware to P3.

10. Please report any new firmware issues to k3supp...@elecraft.com

2015-07-29 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
New BETA firmware for the P3/SVGA is available for download from HERE
ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/P3/firmware/beta/P3-0150_SVGA-0124BETA.zip

This release includes support for the new Elecraft P3TXMON accessory board.
Please refer to the P3/SVGA Manual Rev E
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740152%20P3%20Owner's%20man%20Rev%20E.pdf
and the P3TXmon Installation Guide
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740271%20TX%20Mon%20Option%20Installation%20Rev%20A.pdf

for more information.

Note: if you are upgrading your SVGA to the new 1.24 beta, you do not have
to download the fpga files as they have not changed.

The release notes for these revisions:

MCU 01.50 / 7-27-2015

* Added support for the transmitter monitor module. Added a new TXMonMenu
sub-menu with entries: CW Split (enable split screen for CW mode), Mtr
En (turn on the analog meter display),
MtrScale (set power meter full scale), Mod En (turn on the modulation
envelope display), ModScale (set time/div of modulation display),
SensorCal (RF power calibration, separate for each sensor type)
and TX hang (delay time when the transceiver goes from transmit to
receive).
* Added an additional middle-sized font selection of 7 x 11 pixels.
* The waterfall parameters for the external display are now different from
the main display. The following new entries have been added to the SVGA
menu sub-menu: SVGA WfEn
(turns the waterfall on/off or sets it to track the main display), SVGA
WfAv (waterfall averaging on/off), SVGA WfCo (waterfall color map), SVGA
WfHt (waterfall height), and SVGA WfMk (waterfall markers on/off).
* Supports preamplifier number 2 of the KXV3B (which is standard in the

* Added Noise Blanker.
* Developed a faster method of detecting K3 transmit/receive state changes.
* Added data terminal ‘send on space’ to the available data TX modes.
* Added replay of keyboard input using Ctrl-Alt-R. Ctrl-C will clear replay
buffer.
* Added ‘\r’ to embed a CR in text message. Use ‘\\’ to send a single ‘\’.
* Added ‘\c’ to embed an incrementing serial counter in a text message.
Clearing/presetting counter may be done in the setup screen (Ctrl-Alt-S).
* Text messages sent in data terminal mode now respect the mode setting
(VOX, CR, ^T).
* Fixed a bug in data terminal mode that was causing the time-out to not
reset correctly.
* Fixed a bug in data terminal mode that was causing non-existent characters
to be retrieved and sent. Also fixes a bug of missing characters.
* Fixed a problem that caused some SVGA boards to not initialize correctly
from P3 commands at boot.
* Added waterfall cursors, these display exactly as they do on the P3
screen.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 / KX3 USB Problem

2015-06-25 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi James,

Please excuse me if I am stating the obvious or am suggesting something you
have already tried.

1) Make sure that the PC is plugged into the ACC1/PC jack on the PX3 and
that the KX3 is plugged into the XCVR jack. BE sure that the plugs are
pushed in all the way. Those 3.5mm jacks can appear to be pushed in when
they are not.

2) On your PC ensure that there is only one program up and running that is
using that serial port.
3) Verify that the KX3 is set to 38,400 and the PX3 is also at 38,400. (I
think you mentioned you did this)

If that doesn't work, connect the PX3 by itself to the computer via the
ACC1/PC jack and make sure you can talk to it with your computer while using
the PX3 Utility.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 beta software - Span Step NOT sticky

2015-02-02 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
I just checked on a newly upgraded P3/SVGA and stepped span is remembered
through a power cycle. (I also checked the code just to be sure). If I turn
on stepped span and then power cycle the unit and press the SPAN key, the
span is in stepped mode. If I press a key that I assigned to stepped span,
it shows OFF when I press it, which means it was previously on.

The P3 (and PX3) save values to non-volatile memory when the data is
changed. In other words while you are adjusting it and not when the power
switch is pressed, so it doesn't matter if you pull the plug or push the
button to power it off.

Re: [Elecraft] PX3 Possible Bug - Refresh Rate Slow Depending on KX3 Digital Mode Selected

2014-12-31 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Brian,

The slower refresh rate at narrower spans is normal. The reason is that at
these narrower spans (below 24 KHz) we effectively down sample the I/Q
stream. Down sampling requires the PX3 to acquire many more samples for
each screen which directly affects the refresh rate.

The sampling rate is tied to the SPAN, and the SPAN setting is stored per
MODE. Verify that as you change digital modes, the span stays the same.
My guess is that the span set for USB is different than LSB and this becomes
the issue as FSK uses USB and PSK uses LSB.

Kind regards,

Paul

Re: [Elecraft] P3SVGA Frame Rate?

2014-11-10 Thread Paul Saffren N6HZ
Hi Jim,

The first thing to try is to perform a parameter reset on the P3. With the
P3 on, hold down the MENU and PWR keys. Note, this will reset any function
keys you may have set up.

The frame rate will slow when the span is very narrow. For example at 2 KHz
span, the frame rate will slow substantially due to increased sampling.

If you're still getting slow frame rates, after trying the above, please
contact Elecraft Customer support at k3support at elecraft dot com
