To respect the intellectural right of the software developer, I would not expect 'free ware' or 'open source' from SCS. ham should be willing to share for free should not be applied here for pactor 3 which is not quite a ham product. Of course, I would not have any objection if SCS eventually let us have 'open source'. There are other digital modes for the ham community to choose and use. In fact, we can use Pactor 1 which is free but slower. We share our radio experience and knowledge within the ham community for free. However, just a statement 'ham should be willing to share for free' is just over simplied the situation. Elecraft, Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood do not 'open source' their DSP. This is nothing wrong, they need to recover their RD and protect their own intellectural right. Decent folks, probably be great neighbors, and favored ham buddies, would trust my kids with them, but they would do what 85% of all startup businesses do, go bankrupt. There is a concept they are edging toward in their K3 nit-picking, and it's called mil-spec. They just don't want to admit it. A company that makes mil-spec MUST charge for it. A company that allows construction options MUST charge for it. The screws themselves either add bucks to ALL of the products, OR options increase production complexity and therefore cost for the option. However embedded, LABOR is the major cost of a radio. Even the cost of a screw has labor embedded in it. There ARE mil-spec radios that exceed K3 specs. You can buy them. You can get a LOT of that mil-spec in a K3, but not all. Exactly what part of that lot of a mil-spec was a business decision. If Elecraft were to go bankrupt, I'm fairly convinced that would make some posters happy. But bankrupt would bring further development and features to a crashing halt. And who repairs K3's then? Who will line up a source for your stainless screws and make them available then. There's a real easy answer for the malcontents. Are you peeved? Put it up for sale right here. I've noticed that they sell REALLY fast, usually in a couple hours for most of the retail price. Then you can go to another reflector and complain about Yakencom. They'll be happy to have you back. They might even put you in an ad about how you switched back to Yakencom because you didn't like the screws. OR, you could go out and buy 4000 K3's worth of stainless steel screws, drop your day job, spend several thousand dollars on advertisements for your new stainless steel screw replacement service, charge four times the minimum wage for your assembly time plus screw cost, and then wait for the business and profits to roll in to pay your mortgage and grocery bill. Myself, I hope Elecraft keeps making SOUND BUSINESS DECISIONS. I already know they have the technical moxy and the most customer-centric policies in this business niche. At this point, for me personally, their greatest worth is that they stay in business and keep developing. I want them PROFITABLE so I get to keep them. I feel good about that because Elecraft was developing products and making a profit right through the worst recession since the great depression on a product line that is completely optional to everyday life. They must be doing SOMETHING right smack on dead center to have half of all the transceivers at WRTC and made it through these financial conditions. 73, Guy. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

But I've gotten used to CW REV for audio higher = frequency higher. I *CAN* set the radio so audio freq higher = RF frequency higher on CW. I have gotten used to making sure that logging programs reset to CW REV, not CW, so I don't constantly have to hit MODE ALT during a contest to return to audio freq higher = RF freq higher. And YES I DO sometimes flip to CW, open up the bandwidth and scan higher frequency to lower frequency so that new stuff rolls in higher to lower audio, just to get away from the crowd that is scanning low to high frequency using their CW USB. And yes, I still think CW USB and CW LSB is a better label, and USB is really normal, and no, it doesn't mean a thing to me that the K2 has a USB/LSB that flips on high bands and IT has REV. A K2 is a K2, which is a wonderful compactness and function with minimal parts. After all it only has15 buttons. How much can one expect... But I've gotten used to all the CW REV stuff. But I've never gotten used to the K3's clunky, stop everything in a contest and guess the right sidetone level while the RX audio is cut off sidetone adjustment. It STILL bothers me and I have not found a way around it. Actually it bothers me more now because so much other stuff has been fixed, added, adjusted so neatly. I've never gotten used to it, and I really don't think Elecraft has this one right. I'm not sure how to implement it, but I need to be able to adjust the level while I'm transmitting, while sending CW, and I need to do both MON and PITCH without turning off RX, and it really is a by-band adjustment. I think an option CW MON ADJ:TX ONLY to go with CW MON ADJ:NOR would do it. Currently hitting MON in TX **cuts off the RX audio**. That makes it useless during a contest, because I have to find a space of time when I'm not RX OR TX. Which means the current setup is strictly set-it-in-advance-and-live-with-it. I don't care whether NOR is something I can't use. It's like CW REV. This MON adjustment clunker on the irritating scale is more like CW with no way to do CW REV. If one wanted to get crazy, you could just switch how it works based upon whether the rig is in CW and has transmitted in the last second. Can we please get this one on the list? Every time I have to come to a complete halt to adjust sidetone level, its just like the faucet dripping in the sink at night. I think that the reason it is done this way and no joy yet, is because Wayne is using code wrapped around the PITCH function code to do both that and MON, and will have to code the blend to make it happen like an analog radio, one of these simple-to-say-dickens-to-code things. 73, Guy. Identifying the best level for given band conditions (full qsk of course) is best done while sending. With lots of band noise, I need a higher level of sidetone but with quiet condx, I tend to want a lower level. It would be nice if I could magically remove the compression function and replace it with sidetone level (but no tone if key up). I would then leave that knob set to the sidetone level state except when I need to change power. Re: [Elecraft] Antennas and other.
Aloha Pete: No, I use the internal K3 tuner and then that feeds into an MFJ 986. this seems to work out just fine, even when I am loading up all the rigging on the boat. For a ground you can never have enough...I strongly suggest visiting a stained glass supply store. They sell copper ribbon in various widthsthe widest normally being around 3/4 inch. It is extremely thin, but remember rf travels only on the skin of a conductor. It is also sticky backed and it is around ten buck for a forty foot roll instead of 50 dollars for the wide, thick stuff sold at west marine. In the bilges of the boat, above the water and on the tumble home run three strips of copper ribbon down each side of the boat...solder them together at various points. then cover them over with varnish, shellac, etc. It is rather hard to hid a big ground wire running from the rig down into the bilges, however the ribbon is easily hidden. Now, remember, the ribbon is a conductor, the boat is an insulator, and the sea is a conductorVOILA...condenser. You have capacitive coupled into the ocean. Number TWOdo not cut the back stay and put in insulators...firstly, it is impossible to adequately connect the copper wire to the stainless backstay. Instead, run a sep. wire up to the top of the mast, with insulator at top, and insulator just above head heighth on the bottom. Use this as an antenna,. A cut backstay is a future failure point. No, the extra wire will not present problems because of all the rigging, heck if used, the back stay would do the same thing. If the back stay MUST be used...shine up the stainless steel, shine up the copper wire and , wrap then together first having applied. WELDERS HIGH TEMPERATURE COPPER WELDING PASTE. It is transparent to rf and makes a really good connection between the back stay and the copper wire. Then put onj a hose clamp, then two layers of electrical tape, and then COAT WITH TWO COATS OF LIQUID ELECTRICAL TAPE. You now have a bullet proof back stay connection that should last for years and years, instead of the normal way with its need of redoing every couple of years. I have seen your posts forever now on the Elecraft pages. I have had a K2 since they came out, a K3 of serial number that matches my K2 serial number, a KX-1 that is more fun than I could ever imagine. Recently an old work buddy of mine (now we are both retired) that has had a sailboat for years just passed his technician license. He is Ron Finklestein KJ6KIU. I was pleasantly surprised when he joined our ham ranks. He wants more comms. onboard, and the safety of the ham radios while on the water. He is in the marina near LAX and goes to Catalina often. He was just out watching blue whales, he saw about 150 of them. I was going to recommended a used IC706MK2 with a LDG tuner, or something like it for him to start. I was going to help him with a mast mounted 144 / 450 vertical on the mast top. And some kind of sloping vertical (with two insulators) as a backstay antenna for the lower bands. Would that become a lightning rod? I think he has one noble plate for the thru-hull water and head, and another wire running to the prop shaft. He thinks neither of these are tied to any ground on the boat. I will have to check this stuff myself. I am hoping that you might offer any hints that you have learned the hard way. Ground for the radios? Counterpoise? Best ant for the lower bands? Vertical or inverted vee? He thinks an inverted vee will get in the way of the sails. Angle might be collapsed enough to ruin teh antenna pattern too. I think you use LDG tuners? He will not be getting a K3 for a year or two. And he wants to use the boat radio in the car (Prius) and his house to start. I know this will get old for him, but that is how he will get more radios like the rest of us! Re: [Elecraft] Antennas and other.
Oh yes, Pete, I forgot...for an antenna tuner I can not over emphasize the use of the SGC 239...1. it is not dependent upon any particular rig 2. It senses rf and tunes itself, 3. it will handle 200 watts, 4, it is built by SGC...they supply tuners for the military. 5, IT IS ONLY $192.00. Now, it is not waterproof...in the manual they say to mount it in a tupperware type container up on the overhead back in the lazarette...near the bottom of your antenna. When running the feedline from the tuner to the antenna, keep it a couple of inches away from any metalagain capacitive coupling and loss of signal. If necessary use short pieces of small pvc pipe with a zip tie thru the pipe drawing the feedline to one end of the pipe and attaching the entire thing to the back-stay at the other end. I've used wide range (broadcast style) mics and the Heil HC-5 element with the K3's internal EQ and find that configuring the K3 for a 6 dB per octave roll off below 400 Hz (50 Hz: -16dB, 100 Hz: -12dB, 200 Hz: -6 dB), a -6dB notch at 800 Hz and 6 dB per octave rise above 1000 Hz (1600 Hz: +6dB, 2400 Hz: +10dB, 3200 Hz: +12dB) yields extremely good audio reports with the broadcast mic and a lot of presence without the restricted sound on the HC-5. Nostalgia reigned for awhile, I used it on CW with my K2 as the TX on SKN and a few others. Then nostalgia faded, and I began to realize: 1. The RX, which sounded really good on AM left a lot to be desired in the stability, resetability, sensitivity, selectivity, noise reduction, AGC, and size departments, not to mention SSB reception capability. 2. It weighed in a close to 100 US lbs, I could no longer lift it by myself as I could at 16, and it's primary purpose in the shack seemed to have faded to holding down the operating desk against gravity outages. I finally donated it to the radio museum in Virginia City where it was restored and resides today. Scroll down the above URL a bit to S/N H-130170 for a peek. I had a little problem at first with the lack of weight of my K3 ... pushing the buttons caused it to slip a little on the rubber feet. I cut a piece of that non-slip stuff [sort of a lacework] and solved the problem. I do not want a heavy radio anymore, K3 is great for me. 73, Fred K6DGW Lu Romero wrote: A 7800/7700 would have collapsed my operating table. I think I understand that the apparent power of a signal to your ears/brain may vary even though the actual received power is the same. Commercials on TV seems much louder than the shows these days, but I'm hearing that the actual power stays the same. We can alter the TX or RX equalization in the K3, I think that means we can use a standard 100 watts, but change the apparent loudness we hear by focusing the power in the audio bands that are best heard or for the best intelligibility, and that varies according to age, long proximity to artillery/machines, and other factors. The Heil 4/5 mics give the same effect. That seems to mean that a standard S7 signal could sound like something else. I wonder how meaningful an S meter reading is. It seems that it is more important to tell the other op how well you are receiving their message (as apposed to their signal strength) and that is the result of more than the meter reading. I find it amusing that a station will ask me to repeat my callsign and name several times, and then give me a 59 report. I think I messed up several people over the weekend contest by giving them 5-7 08 reports instead of what they expected. One station actually lost their contest tempo when I came back with 45 zone 8. Working back toward the original topic... I generally give signal reports based on what I think the signal would be with the RF gain fully clockwise, and attenuator and preamp both turned off. To me, that would be the natural and unmodified smeter reading. (I've never given better than 57 on 10 meters.) This best meets my understanding of what that portion of the signal report should be: A report of signal level as it is received by my rig (and not a signal level as my rig has modified it.) Of course, I'm a newbie ham, so I'm probably doing it all wrong. 73 - Gary / k3wow On Jul 15, 2010, at 1:21 PM, The Smiths wrote: Exactly! That's one reason Elecraft offers a 5-pole, 200-Hz unit. 5 poles is entirely adequate at these narrow widths. Our 2-kHz IMD dynamic range using the 200-Hz filter is outstanding. We've had some requests to offer a 270 or 300-Hz 5-pole filter, which would be better optimized for narrow-shift RTTY than the 200-Hz filter. We're also considering a dual-passband filter (500/270 or 500/300) that would fit in one slot. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jul 15, 2010, at 10:18 AM, Jim Brown wrote: On Thu, 15 Jul 2010 14:53:10 +0100, Ian White GM3SEK wrote: Agreed. 250-270Hz would be the sweet spot for an 8-pole filter, to guarantee good sales for the manufacturer *and* good performance for a range of users in heavy QRM. RF Gain should have no effect on the s-meter action when in ABS mode, just as ATT and PRE do not. It would probably screw up (highly technical term) how the system works, or require a separate receiver just for the S meter. The RF gain must be ahead of the DSP system. This means the real signal level to the DSP could be reduced 30 dB or even significantly more than that amount. How and why would someone design a DSP system that could measure the level on a signal that was not actually present??? There is no cheap or easy way to do that, so Elecraft does what everyone else does. Ever since receivers began, the RF gain will either affect the absolute S meter reading in relationship to input level, or the S meter will show the increase in gain reduction by increasing resting S meter reading as the gain is reduced. I think you want something that cannot be done. Besides, S meter are pretty much meaningless anyway. I only use mine to tell me when I need to use an attenuator pad or a preamp. 73 Tom __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Thursday, July 1, 2010, 3:31 PM Hey guys! New Elecrafter here...building myself a K1 and having a LOT of fun. Altogether, I'm assembling the K1 with 4-band filter, noise blanker, and tuner. I've built a lot of smaller kits in the past, but this has been by far the most ambitious build yet. I'm happy to say that studying all of the builders' guides and instructions have kept me from running off the road. I do, however, have one question for the group. Specifically, I have reached the point in construction (Ch. 7, Pg. 39) where I am to perform receiver alignment. The instructions suggest, in preference order, a signal generator, another ham transceiver, or an antenna. Since things have gone so well this far, I am motivated to use the best option and hopefully continue my success through this step. I don't have a signal generator, per se. I do, however, have a VE3DNL marker generator assembled and functioning. Would this be appropriate to use for the intended purpose, or do I need a transmitter that is natively (that is, not through harmonics like the VE3DNL does) transmitting in-band? Alternatively, would the Elecraft XG2 be a better tool for the job? I am building for 40,30,20, 15but the XG2 is 3-band only? I often find it at 2-3 o'clock. Is this normal? Output from the internal speaker seems normal relative to the gain control - rarely requiring beyond 10 o'clock. A tangentially related question - when I plug into the headphone jack, it appears that I have to push the phone plug into the jack quite firmly before the speak is cut off. CW plus is primarily intended to support very fast speeds, often heard now with operators sending with keyboards and other electronic keying devices. Debouncing a bug to prevent false starts when someone has poor contacts on one side is not one of the design goals for CW plus I've heard passed about, though the buffering of keying circuits used in most transmitters now has a small amount of debouncing effect which has likely been hiding the glitch. This would include the regular CW of the K3. With CW plus, however, that small false start has to be taken as legitimate, because pausing a small amount to make sure that the operator really means it, would make high speed CW sound jerky. CW plus was made to faithfully reproduce the keying at very high speeds, and has to take the blip seriously. Cleaning and proper adjustment of bug contacts were always needed in the day, because the condition you are talking about would result in scratchy keying...which was never blamed on the transmitter, only on the op who was not keeping his bug greased. The need is greater now because noone is keying the +100V or more found on the old open cathode circuits any more, and bad bug contacts will easier bother a mere 12 volts on the key, and bother 5 volts even worse. 73, Guy. So then I tried lighting my touch on the dah side while I was sending, and sure enough it was still there. So, I switched from my Begali Intrepid to my Vibroplex Original, and then I found that the ticking sound was GONE all together! Now I'm competely confused. What does the one dah side have that the other bug's doesn't??? Gold Contacts? A bad ground connection? More surface contact area, a larger area? You tell me. I LOVE the new QSK (QRQ), but if I had to deal with that Tick sound on the dah contact, I would just not use it. Shame. This happens almost entirely on characters that start with a 'dah'. I think this is because the index finger is off the paddle between characters and the initial attack is a little more forceful. Subsequent dahs in the same character sound fine, but that first one has a 'tick' (a spike by the sound of it). No problem at all with the dits. BTW, I don't think this is a matter of bug adjustment; you can get the same effect by tapping down on a straight key from a slight distance. So it is a matter of technique. I can avoid it on the bug by keeping my index finger resting against the paddle all the time and avoiding that first hard strike, but can't send as well that way; maybe with practice... 73, Drew AF2Z _ The New Busy is not the old busy. In fact, I have a Viz right-angle bug which is a lighter key and requires a lighter touch than the typical Vibroplex. And I use it without benefit of any epoxy, superglue, and/or anchor bolts holding it down to the desk as a lot of bug users seem to do. If I was really slamming it like in the video it would walk off the desk in short order, haha! Even so, that slight initial tap on the leading dahs is enough to make my K3 go TICK! 73, Drew AF2Z On Sat, 19 Jun 2010 10:05:52 -0700 (PDT), you wrote: Drew, you have been watching the lady operator with the long finger nails on the Night-of-Nights Utube video too much. I think it's 18 gauge, but I'm sure that's not critical. Mine actually measured 51 ft 8 inches long (and I'm sure that's not critical either) Get one wire as high in the air as you can via any handy support(s) and lay the other on the ground - straight if I can, random directions if not. By the if I'm in, say, a third floor hotel room, one wire might go out the window to a tree in the parking lot, and the counterpoise drops out the window and goes along the ground next to the building.
