I made an external switch box with a double pole-double throw switch.
It seems to work well if you don't mind the extra cable clutter.

For convience in switching between Data modes and speech modes, you will have
to go with the K3 which has independent per mode selections. The KX3 was not
designed to have that same capability.
With the KX3, some form of external switching would be required to switch from
microphone input to your digital inputs. Attenuators in the PC soundcard to
KX3 audio input might be requited so you do not have to contend with the
differences in audio levels.

Such switching was not a part of the KX3 design, and you may wnat to upgrade to
a K3 for your station instead of the KX3.

I have thought of 3D printing a “manifold” that would have connectors that
plugged into the side panel of the KX3 and allowed something similar for a
quick disconnect. Frankly, however, this idea hasn’t gotten past the
stars-in-the-eyes stage and also frankly it wasn’t that hard to use a wye
cord for my MARS ops.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Wish List

2013-08-23 Thread Edward R Cole

I concur with Don,

I have a small kit building business (not Elecraft kits) and one of
my kit suppliers provides the pcb half populated with sm
components. The kit uses the same pcb for several different bands
and changes components to fit the frequency and options chosen. My
guess is the kit seller buys his boards with these select components
pre-installed due to cost, efficiency and quality control issues. I
suspect this has a lot to do with the K3 in the form it is
offered. Customer service headaches is the other.

It is very hard for someone to break into building ham radio products
due to the economy of scale issue (little guy can't buy components as
cheaply as a big outfit that orders in multiples of thousand
quantities. I supply full testing results and a set up/operation
manual and that is not as easy as it may seem.

Days of kits assembled from military surplus parts (Heathkit) are
long gone. If you are clever or the first one out the gate with a
brand new concept (niche product), you have a chance (for a short
time). 600m equipment for the pending new ham band has this
potential (an already many players coming onto the field).

Bill,

I sympathize with you, but the reality is that a large scale SMD kit
would create a great number of customer support problems. You and I may
be able to do SMD, but that is not the majority.. Add to that the fact
that the board houses can produce boards fully populated with SMD
parts for a price that is less than what it would cost Elecraft to
provide an SMD kit with the assembly manual.

Elecraft would come to a halt trying to fill requests for dupe parts.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Wish List

2013-08-22 Thread Mark Volstad
Sounds like the DZKit Sienna might be right up your alley, Bill. Seems like
only a handful have been built in the three or four years that it's been in
production, so you might also end up with a collector's item!

I too enjoyed building my K2 (and my KX1), but have sold both and am now very
happy with my K3 and KX3. I don't see how either of these technological marvels
could be marketed profitably as solder kits.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Wish List

2013-08-22 Thread Don Allen
The Sienna would be a neat full kit to build. Brian Wood W0DZ, a
retired Agilent test equipment designer and engineer, has placed a lot
of his blood, sweat, and tears into the Sienna.

Another aspect of not offering the K3 and KX3 as full solder kits is the
level of customer support required. Although Elecraft has wonderful and
expedient customer service, a full kit K3 and KX3 may be more than they
wish to address.

[Elecraft] Wish List for KAT500 (or whatever the tuner for the KPA500 will be)

2011-06-27 Thread Peter Chamalian
1.Instant (or as fast as possible) tuning when QSY to a new band or
new frequency the say way that the KPA500 does.

2. Tune while transmitting and not requiring key down to tune

3. While tuning, put the KPA500 into a reduced power mode if necessary
but not key down

4. Have both balanced and unbalanced antenna input with the ability to
specify (program) which input gets used per band but be able to manually
select as well.

5. Automatically go into bypass mode if the SWR on the antenna without
the tuner is within predetermined limits.

Hope we get to see the tuner sooner rather than later - I'm getting tired of
the antics of a different brand tuner that I currently have.

Re: [Elecraft] Wish List K3 remote front face kit

2010-08-10 Thread ka9zap
I know that the big box thread has been killed I was going to post my
thoughts yesterday but did not

The only thing the DMU in my subjective opinion was good for besides
(pretty eye candy) was the
menu being completely displayed in plain English, it does
everything. but nothing well.

Second I really miss the triple band stacking memory in a key pad
numbers on the face of the
radio sohere are my thoughts while I have gotten used to how the
face of the radio does work.

My subjective opinion
I do not like to play Point and click computer control radio I want to
operate the radio from the
Radio not a computer, to have this option is nice however so.

Wish list

Front panel option
A removable front panel for one that is much large ...to be determined
by the (engineers who have
done such a marvelous job with the ergonomics of the great radio)
Remember the ts2000 computer
radio face have a cable that connects to a new front end panel like some
sorta of HDMI cable to the
new remote face which could be adjusted to a 45 degree angle or what
ever have the full size buttons
band stacking registry big knobs single tap menu changes all the stuff
one wish for to be determined
by the engineers who design this stuff. I know that I have missed some
feature to be engineered into
this new remote face take a pole see what the customer base would support.
This would be an option so the original size box is not out dated or
made obsolete by then next better
box.
A one tap QMB

Last I like lifting the small radio much better than my newly departed
one owner 18 year old
FT1000d small is good with a (remote) new bigger front face for the
K3 would be all good.

Things I love about Elecraft and the K3
The best company in Amateur Radio to deal with customer support
The fact the owners and design team don't hide from the forum and take
e-mails even complaints
High performance in a small light package
The fact you don't have to sell a 2 year old top end radio at 1/2 price
then double the original cost
to get the next latest hype this new radio chase is stupid as I see it
I'm done playing the game.

I have ground off the Yaesu tattoo on my chest I will probably never...
purchase another new...
Yaesu radio the FT2000 DMU U-tuning kit experience was a painful eye
opening experience.
YAESU LIED AND MY LOYALTY DIED no diversity receive, triple roof filters
soft front end
stuff that they covered up. Rushing new stuff to market before its ready
to beat the competition.

I know that new products are not easy to learn or adjust to a DVD that
shows all the features
with explanation of how this all works might be useful many learn much
better with audio visual
teaching than reading a manual.

Sorry for the band width Eric

I programmed the M1 through M4 buttons for bandwidth instead of using the
rotary knob. Much better for CW.

I would like to disable the attenuator so ops don't push too long and turn
it on. With my station I never use the ATT function, just preamp on or off.

The only other issue is the AB split button and A/B. It would be nice to
have a second frequency tucked away for instant recall with one quick tap,
not what is on VFO A or B. I think what people really miss is being able to
tap the band buttons and have two frequencies stored in each band button
like a Yaesu will do. I really miss those band buttons. :-)

The size isn't as important to operators here (or me) as being able to make
the above happen fast while distracted. I'd take a bigger box to have those
 band buttons.

If the FN-X buttons are intended to be user programmable, it would be
beneficial to be able to set custom labels for them that are displayed

By looking at that grey silkscreened line across the bottom of the clear

mostly (of course) be where the 100 HZ step of low cut and hi cut will either
leave the guy inside the cut with you or damage your signal where it is not
readable. 50 hz step sure would help. Maybe there should be a region where it
switches to 50 from 100 as the lo and hi approach each other so as to not make
it tedious to get there?

Just a thought as I try to eliminate interferrence. Might work good for CW
also. Width and shift at 50 also? Probably not.

Thanks es 73, de Jim KG0KP

Why not program the VOX icon to flash on and off when you are in vox?
If it ain't flashing you are in PTT.
 PUT THAT ON THE WISHLIST.

Or you can simply make the lcd backlight go from amber to red when vox is
 activ.OH no. forget it.

RE: [Elecraft] Wish List for K3 - Moot Point

2008-03-11 Thread Lee Buller

OK guys.

If you follow the thread ... the idea has been tossed about and tossed out ...
and for good reason. They can't do it. Nope, cannot be done. The VOX icon is
burned into the LCD, thus there is no way to change it. I did not understand
the manufacturing process when I made the comment. I am not an engineer or a
manufacturing process expert.

So it is a moot point.

Again, some of this is the learning curve of the radio, and once I learn the
radio better, I will understand that when the VOX is not showing, I am in PTT.

But, I reserve the right to suggest improvements that are part of my opinion.
Sometimes on this list...dumb ideas are branded as dumb by guys who think they
know all the answers. There are no dumb questions or dumb suggestions as the
K3 evolves. Please, your opinion counts and so does mine...lets not minimize
constructive (but maybe flawed) comments or ideas

I felt this was something would enhance the rig...a small something. It just
cannot be done. So, lets move on.

[Elecraft] Wish List for K3

2008-03-10 Thread Lee Buller

I am not sure this is the forum to do this. I will keep this simple.

I would like the feature of when you turn off VOX...the letters PTT are put in
their place.

I know that PTT shows up in the B VFO areabutjust for a second or
two. I have been scratching my head and reading the manual trying to figure
out why the rig won't key...all to discover I am on PTT. I know it is a DUH,
but I think it would be a good change.

It's an LCD in that it's a liquid crystal display - that's the technology,
but driving a pure LCD dot matrix display takes a lot more power, a lot more
programming etc - it's not a TV screen. An awful lot of electronics these
days does not have a completely programmable display, it has areas which
'light' up, but its a predefined pattern of crystals. It's also difficult
(read expensive) to get good resolution in such small icons - look at the
resolution of VFOB display to get an idea.

I'm not an LCD expert, but some general-purpose LCDs are simply an array of
dots and you can program them to show anything. But it looks like an array
of dots. An example is the LCD on my Array Solutions Power Master
http://www.arraysolutions.com/Products/powermaster.htm.

Other LCDs have custom icons. The VFO A and B areas use seven-segments and
a dot sort of construction that gives you numbers and most characters (and i
sometimes lower case is used, because upper case D looks a lot like an O or
a zero). So during DSP load it shows up as dSP, which looks amazingly
close to d5P (d five p).

Other areas like the S-Meter area appear to be custom icons. There isn't
any programming to draw the scale of the S-meter. It's burned in to the
glass. The programming can choose to illuminate it or leave it dark.

I don't know who the custom LCD vendor was for the Elecraft K3, but here's a
web page for one company that provides custom LCD solutions:

David and Dick got it right.

It takes a lot of graphics processing power to make a general purpose
LCD look good. If you've got an LCD monitor on your computer there is a
point at which your current video card will not drive a larger monitor.
I ran into this when I upgraded to a 22 wide screen LCD. The old,(2
years) video card wouldn't drive it to a decent resolution.

The iconized LCD's take a lot less programming as the areas
specifically setup are either on or off. You can't anticipate everything
someone might like to see so it's a trade off.

On my K2 the only way I know I'm using VOX is the flashing U or L icon.
If it ain't flashing I know I'm running PTT mode.

What is this used to have a Model 15 stuff? That is still current
technology in my shack. Well
at least the marriage of past and relatively current technology. I have
a Yaesu SP-5 speaker with
the Timewave DSP 59Y in it. Also in the case are the power supplies to
run it along with the
circuitry to drive the Model 15 selector magnets. They had a very early
serial port that required

HV DC.

So my question for the K3 Guru's is about this as I will keep the Model
15 running even if just
for nostalgia.. Is the decoded Baudot available anywhere within the
K3 or is all the real RTTY

activity buried within the software?

What I have always missed is a graphic display showing me the RX
spectrum (Panadapter) with band map information from the contest
logging software (WinTest) imposed on the spectrum. Ideally all on the

[Elecraft] Wish List - K3 with TIVO

2007-05-01 Thread KJ3D
I know we are supossed to be sending these to Wayne, but I may need a grass
roots movement on this suggestion.

I got back to CW this year, and am pretty rusty. I also started watching
Jerico on TV. Every episode starts with a burst of CW - a little message
pertinent to that episode. The code is 20 - 25 wpm, about half in the noise
and not well sent.

But, with my TIVO, I can back up 8 seconds and play it again until I get it.

Ya think we could get a TIVO backup in the K3?

Tom - KJ3D

It's there... if I recall, I think the K3 offers 30-seconds of RX
audio playback... maybe longer.

[Elecraft] Wish List and/or Modification

2006-06-19 Thread J F
This may be silly, but one of the things that I don't
like about my K2 and KAT-100 is the grounding screw.
What I would really like to see is a standard screw
type Banana Jack. It is more of an issue for me as I
move the rig back and forth between two QTH's and that
is the most difficult part of the task. (I know, Do
you want some cheese with that whine?

The little plastic topped screw is just too small. I
replaced both of those recently with computer case
screws that have bigger and easier to grip plastic
tops. There were made to replace case screws on
computers to alow easier access. I found a little bag
of 'em I bought a while back and they're the same
thread as the Elecraft supplied part, much easier to
grip. PEM makes them.

Cheers,
Julius

Julius,

Find a 5-way binding post with a 6-32 threaded stud and screw it into the
hole where the grounding screw normally mounts. Take a 6-32 nut along to
the local hamfest - caution, some of the threads on the new binding posts
are metric sizes.
