[Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem
I have used my K1 for years without a problem. Some time ago the keyer started sending a few random dits and dahs in the middle of a QSO for no obvious reason. I let it sit for a few days while I thought about that and when I tried it again it worked normally. Now it has a new problem. The left paddle sends a constant signal like using a straight key. The right paddle seems to do nothing. I tried the paddles on my K2 and they worked fine. I tried my K2 paddles on the K1 and I still had the problem. So it isn't the paddles. I have no clue as to what is happening. I hope someone else does. Any suggestions? Re: [Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem
Ken, Did you inadvertently change the menu INP parameter to HND? If that is OK. try reseating the firmware to clean off any possible oxidation on the leads and socket. Still did not fix it? Re: [Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem
HND it was. I don't know how that could have happened, but it did. I forgot about that menu option because I never use it. Thanks for the speedy reply! It's nice to know that there are gurus like you out there watching out for us. Ken - N9QIL On 3/17/2014 8:28 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Ken, Did you inadvertently change the menu INP parameter to HND? Re: [Elecraft] K1 keyer problem
2 things: 1. You can turn the K1 output power off completely (Pwr = 0) by tapping BAND/DISPLAY when in the Out Menu. Tapping BAND/DISPLAY a second time turns power back on. 2. Because of paddle design, the dit and dah sides interact on some paddles when the paddle-to-contact spacing is set extremely close. The Begali Simplex Mono exhibits this feature, for example. So check it with wider paddle spacing if you can. - Les, W9XC On 2/27/12 11:42 AM, Vic K2VCO wrote: You said that this started suddenly. What changed? What kind of paddle are you using? Re: [Elecraft] K1 keyer problem
Ken, The K1 determines dot or dash by the voltage on the KEYIN line. If the soldering of RP5 and R19 and R20 is faulty, the K1 will be confused between dots and dashes. Re-flow the soldering of those components with a hot soldering iron (750 degF). 73, Don W3FPR On 2/27/2012 12:42 PM, Vic K2VCO wrote: You said that this started suddenly. What changed? [Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem
My K1 has started having a mind of its own. (It used to work just fine. It is serial no. 1514 and has NEVER had a problem before.) I started calling the other day and all of a sudden it sent a dah when it finished sending a dit. I checked it out a bit and noticed that occasionally it sent a dah when it hit the dit paddle also. I don't see how it could be RF getting in. I cranked it down to 100 milliwatts and ran it into a good dummy load and the problem did not change. And it was no worse at 5 watts. Bypass caps on the key line didn't help. Any ideas? Perhaps you inadvertently changed the keyer mode in the Menu. See 'Keyer Setup' in your Owner's manual. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- My K1 has started having a mind of its own. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem
Ken, Are your paddle contacts clean? Put a strip of paper between the contacts - close the contacts and slide the paper out. Not only will dirt stick to the paper, but the paper does a bit of gentle contact burnishing. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/25/2012 4:36 PM, Ken Wezeman wrote: My K1 has started having a mind of its own. Ken wrote: ...all of a sudden it sent a dah when it finished sending a dit. Ron wrote: Perhaps you inadvertently changed the keyer mode in the Menu. See 'Keyer Setup' in your Owner's manual. In this respect, the iambic mode most likely to exhibit this behavior is iambic mode B, which when sending an iambic string dit-dah-dit-dah-etc. an extra dit will be sent if the paddles are released during a dah, or an extra dah will be sent if the paddles are released during a dit. When iambic mode A is selected, if the paddles are released during a dah only that dah is completed and keying stops. If the paddles are released during a dit only that dit is completed and keying stops. Why anyone would choose mode B, with its much more critical paddle timing requirements compared to mode A, has never had an intelligent answer that I've seen in 44 years as a Morse-using ham. It's a system that many seem to like for which no one is able to cite any advantage (except that most incompetently- and carelessly-designed Asian-source rigs with iambic keying allow *only* mode B). Go figure! :-) There's no guarantee that being in mode B is your problem, of course. 73, Mike / KK5F __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem...
Dear All, I am finding a problem with the keyer on my K1 that I just finished building. Sometimes when I press dot I get dash-dot (-.) instead (even if I never pressed dash before at all). Changing between A and B modes doesn't help. Did anyone got the same problem or has any idea of what is going on? Re: [Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem...
Rui: Check to make sure your keyer paddle contacts are cleaned and making a low resistance contact when closed. The Keyer circuit in the K1 generates dots and dashes by connecting two different values resistors to ground. The voltage drop determines whether it is a dot or dash. Burnish the keyer contacts and I feel sure the problem will go away. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Keyer Problem...
Dear Jim and Leigh, Thank you very much for your fast and helpful replies! As you said the problem was with the paddle. After cleaning it and adjusting its tension, the problem faded away. I never had this problem with my usual keyer, and hence thought it could be something with the K1 MCU.
