Steve, If you install the unmatched filters according to the IB, The 2 receivers will sound like they are slowly alternating between the two speakers or earphones. If you are using SSB then just set-up the filters using the average offset for both and you won't have that effect and save a $ or 2. I use a 2.8 KHz 8 Pole in the main and a 2.7 KHz 5 pole in the sub (set with 0.0 offset) with no ill effects. Don't know if it works well in CW. Hi Steve: WORST CASE... if you attempt DIVERSITY reception (during which both RXs are supposed to be receiving on the same (exact) frequency, you will probably note a slight 'beat' between the two received signals. So it could sound like being in a jet airliner with engines out of sync? That happened to me once. I was in the back of a plane which had 2 rear engines. It felt like my head was about to explode! AnywayIt would be nice if DSP could compensate for that instead of buying expensive filters. If filters are not matched when operating in diversity mode you can set up a kind of beat note between the two receivers. In my case I hear no such effect using mismatched filters, which is why I say I may be lucky... [Elecraft] K3 Diversity and filter selection
I use my K3 in diversity receive 90% of the time. I have matched 2.7 KHz filters in both receivers. The sub receiver has only the one filter the main also has 500 Hz, 6 KHz and 13 KHz filters. I have had no issues when the two receivers are using different filters. I may be lucky. I understand that when operating in a CW contest environment that I will be disadvantaged because of the sub Rx using a broad roofing filter. I am not a contester. Your mileage may vary and you can always add filters later.
