[Elecraft] K3 External speakers
Searched the archive however can't find info for speakers set to 2 and no sub receiver. Yesterday I got audio from both speakers, and today only one side is working. I have the correct adaptor and speakers are 8 Ohms unamplified. Everything checks good on the bench. Could something be wrong in the radio or something I'm missing in set up? I've read the manual and Cady book a few times each and can't seem to figure this out. Ditto on the West Mountain Radio COMspkr. Ordered a pair after reading reviews here on the forum and after installation, it took about 5 seconds to hear the difference over my computer speakers. My other speakers had RFI on certain bands, but these have no RFI on all the HF bands with the KPA500 running 500 watts. I am extremely satisfied. They are nice looking and have enough of a base area that they will not tip over easily unless actually pushed over. I am pleased. BTW, they arrived within a week of ordering them on-line. I also have the West Mountain Radio COMspkr and agree it is absolutely clear and free of interference. If I turn on my external computer speakers (creature speakers hooked to my iMac) then I can hear a loud buzz whenever I key down from those creature speakers but absolutely nothing from the COMspkr. The odd thing is that the COMSpkr appears to be the same device as many of the generic computer speakers *except* the bypass/RFI suppression parts included on the chip makers reference design are present in the West Mountain Radio product but are lacking in the commodity products. I have cleaned up several of the generic ($20) speakers by adding the necessary parts to the holes *already present* on the circuit board! 73, ... Those working professionally in the field of EMC (that is, RFI interference) know that this sort of problem is QUITE widespread. In most manufacturing companies, there is an engineer whose job it is to try to remove as many parts as possible from every product so that it can be made more cheaply and still be sold. RFI suppression components almost always the first to go. Open up a noisy product (if you can) and you'll find empty holes on the board where those parts should be. From memory, (ie the regs changed I should check first) over here in Eu we have working place regulation set at 85dBA as a maximum for continuous 8 hours listening environment, but it is advised (not mandatory till another 3dB) to use some kind of ear protection; then 88dBA for 4 hours, 91dBA for 2 hours, etc and there is a maximum somewhere around 90s duration. I think *most* folk would find 85dBA very tiresome over 8 hours. Amplified computer speakers have been a problem for me. They are not well screened for RF and on occasion I have had bad feedback problems. Eliminating the amplified speakers solved the feedback problem. I use a pair of amplified Labtec computer speakers with my K3's rear Stereo speaker output I like the ability to either listen on headphones and speakers or turn down the speakers and have a quieter room using the cans although I did have some rfi initially it was getting in from the little wall wart power supply for the speakers a simple fix was 8-9 wraps of the power cord where it entered the speaker around a small yellow toroid salvaged from a dead computer supply later I upped my power to 400w with an AL-811 and and the rfi from the speakers was back this time I did a 6 turn wrap through one of the square snapon toroids this was placed on the line coming from the K3 to the speaker input at the end right next to where it entered the amplified speaker all I'm saying is don't just throw out the idea of using a set of cheap computer speakers you may have around the shack it may be a really simple fix to get the going. So I'm still looking for some smart, compact, RFI-proof speakers with decent bass response, preferably passive (who needs another wall-wart) that I can use with my K3. I use the Sounds Sweet. It has gotten a bit pricey but it has the advantage of cutting down on the high frequencies. This helps the noisy receiver issues that occupied so much bandwidth over the past few days. (Please do not take this as an invitation to beat that dead horse any more!) Just remember that one audio channel is on the tip and the other is on the ring of the plug and connect speakers in this manner using -only- a stereo plug. My particular trap was forgetting that using a stereo Y merely moved the trap six inches away from the jack. (;-) As others have pointed out, speakers from the two-radio field are good choices, and the CB isle at truck stops usually sell nice speakers. Mine are Barjan 320-701's. Radio Scrap 21-549B's are OK, too. 73! There is a mod on the website to fix this problem. Check out the K3 Enhancements and Application Notes page and look for K3 AF OutPut Mod Kit. The AF Output mod had been made to (at least) two of the K3's that suffered the audio output IC failure, mine included. Perhaps the mod only helps and that's why the problem took months to come to failure. My board is slightly scorched, and the IC burned up on another board. The audio IC is robust, so I'm told, but can only stand so much for so long. BTW, headphone audio still works after the output IC's failure. Perhaps I'm not too smart, in that I had / have two speakers, so I chose two speakers from the menu. (;-). Duh! 73! [Elecraft] K3, external speakers and an HF amp.
I use an external speaker on my K3. (Sounds Sweet speaker switch between radios via an iplus by W2IHY) I don't us an amp with the K3 but I do use an amp with my other radios. (Orion II, Omni VII, Jupiter) I do sometimes get a little RF into my small stereo speaker system of which I use to listen to TV or to commercial FM music. I do not see any other RF issues in my ham station. Reading the response from OE6KYG it appears that I could stand the chance of taking out the audio amp in my K3. Is this correct??? [Elecraft] K3 - External Speakers
I just picked up a set of Cyber Acoustics amplified speakers (stereo) Model CA-2012 at my local Fry's Electronics. Cost was just $10. These speakers sound great, and look great set-up on either side of my K3. There is even a headphone jack on the right speaker, which also works great. And no RFI problems that I can find. Lyle, Thank you for the info. I'm about to order a Peavey Impulse II Monitor Speaker for my Yaesu FT-920. The speaker specs out at 16 ohms.
