Wayne, the annoyance factor could be reduced by ANDing the flashing 'Delta-F' light with the red 'Tx' light. That way it would only flash a warning when transmitting. [Elecraft] K3 Wish List - XIT tell-tale
I guess Elecraft are now beyond wanting to make relatively minor changes to the K3 as it is now a mature product, but how about this? On two occasions recently I have been in QSO with a weak distant station on 160 or 80 and a very loud EU has come up on the same frequency with a QRL? On my reply of 'R Pse QSY' the other station ignores me and begins a long and loud CQ thus wiping out the one I'm trying to work. Both times I established that the interfering station was using a K3 and had inadvertently left the 'XIT' function on, thus transmitting on a different frequency to that he was listening on. The yellow 'delta f' tell-tale LED is there to tell you that either the RIT or XIT function is on, but if you are already using the RIT function, there is nothing to tell you that XIT is also on. Hi Tom, There are LCD icons for both RIT and XIT. XIT is rarely used, and you'd think that those who do use it would be motivated to keep an eye on both the XIT icon and the Delta-F LED. That said, I'll add to my list consideration of flashing the XIT icon and/or the Delta-F LED. I have to be careful with such changes because of unintended side effects and the annoyance factor. I feel for you Eric and the group. There's always a wish or request. It will never end. But I am the happiest now with my radio than ever. Wish Item: When setting Noise Reduction. I prefer 4-1 for CW and 8-1 for SSB. Could you have 8-x followed by 4-x? In other words. Have the selections cylcle. from 4-x to 8-x and as the knob contuines in the same direction 4-x appears. When in SSB,I don't have go counter clockwise to get to 4-x for CW. When in REPEAT mode sending a CW message use the last 2 letter positions (REPExx) to down count to start of next transmission. To have the ability to use a PF switch to toggle power from 5 Watts to some higher power, probably 80 Watts. Have the K3 control switching between 1:1 and 4:1 on the BL-3. Where is the BL-3? Having a wonderful time with the K3, mostly CW, some SSB. Want to get into RTTY and PSK31. I agree... But when I asked for the ability to erase memories Wayne told me he didn't understand why I would want that ability when I could just over write the memory location with something else. But when he made it so a lot of people started taking a lot more liberties with memories and really liked that new feature. Personally I'm more for being able to NULL out CW memories but I suppose I can always just set them to only send E. Granted there are much higher priority things and so far I've been very pleased with Wayne's prioritizing so I'm content to just leave things in his hands. I have a few minor things for the wish list too. - a separate on/off possibility to save more parameters for each band and antenna such as: - ATU / bypass - power level - PA out (not available) I also would like to have the DATA MD menu setting behave like the TEXT DEC setting for CW. Turning to the left should always have the same value, DATA A or so, and turning to the right should maybe result in 31 BPS PSK. I'm with Roy. If I have a system in state A and I fiddle with it and get it into state B, I want to be able to get back to A. Even if the difference is trivial and doesn't matter in the slightest. Is there a good reason for this? No. It's likely a mild form of obsessive compulsive disorder. I should probably be seen by a psychiatrist. (my other 3 requests are all in the next or future firmware, I guess they where more popular requests). I agree that this is not a question about lifetime of the backlight, to me it is more important to be able to use the radio in stealth mode when operating remote. I also find it useful when leaving the radio on overnight to use the band opening as an alarm clock. When I first saw this thread, I assumed it was about wearing out the liquid crystals, not about the back light. Actually driving the liquid crystals will eventually wear them out, as it is not possible to completely avoid DC components in the drive (LCDs are driven by AC (acutally complex waveforms that average to zero DC for both selected and non-selected elements) to avoid elecrolysing the liquid crystals. I'd therefore say, don't worry about the backlight, except on power consumption grounds; it is the display itself you may want to power down. Running plenty of QRP and QRPP but also 100W, I would like to toggle between two adjustable power levels. PF1 or 2 could do that? The TUNE was changed and this option might be as easy. Phil, The problem with the currently available daylight option is that it makes the LEDs light up on full strength. I have some concern about burn-out of the LCD display in areas where it remains unchanged for long periods. Maybe this is an unjustified worry, but it would be good to have the option to simply turn off the display when using remote operation, or even when operating the rig from a PC in the shack. Bob, Steve Jackson KZ1X would be the best to respond to your concern. I understand that Steve has never turned his K2 off except for periods of upgrading and alignements. It would be nice to be able to erase entries from memory channels rather than having to overwrite them. I have entered a local broadcast station into one of the memories. When I transfer it to the VFO, it takes the place of the 160 meter band. I have to manually load a 160 meter frequency to get the band back. To get around this problem I overwrote the broadcast station memory with a ham band frequency. Please consider a firmware change that would permit erasing entries. It would also be nice if non-ham band frequencies could be blocked from entering the ham band registers. Thanks. Hi all, (This is a resend with the correct subject this time) I have a different scenario. I like the concept of locating the tuner close to the antenna and controlling it remotely (the only control I need is Tune!). So what I need at the transceiver is the ability to start a carrier at reduced power (10W regardless of power and mode setting) and provide a tune command to the tuner (just a pulse on a logic output will do). Will the K3 support this? For the record I am doing this today with my IC-718's Tuner button with a bit of external hardware hooked up to the tuner port of the transceiver. The remote tuner is a MFJ-929 modded to externally control the Tune button. Believe me, MFJ makes really good auto tuners. 73 AB2TC - Knut The ability to control an external ATU is very important for those of use who will also be using a high power auto-tuner after an amplifier. Eric/Wayne have said that this is on the list for a future release. What would make sense (to me) would be: 1) External auto-tuner sends keying signal to K3 when high SWR or manual start-tuning button is pushed. 2) K3 reverts to a low power (10 watt) CW signal for tuning, and DOES NOT key the amplifier as long as the external tuner keying signal is applied. 3) Once tuner finishes tuning, external keying signal goes away, K3 reverts to normal power/mode, and K3 will again be able to key external amplifier. So when you hit this SWR value, the tuner initiates the tune. Of course, you can turn off the auto-tune, and only have the tuner tune when you want it to by pushing the TUNE button. I agree, but as an example if I am on 40m at some ridiculous hour I would be working CW at the low end and SSB between 7140 and 7197 kHz, which I believe could result in a fair number of clicks during the night when using an all driven array with the type of ATU you have in mind. My only problem with motorised units is the screwdriver type antennas. They make a heck of a racket and this is the only reason I don't have that type on my property. And then there's the frogs! The ant tuner will shut them all up for a few minutes! Of course, there is always the possibility of using a feedline that is matched to the antenna and good grounds etc. I've been runnning a vertical made by Mosely back in the late 1950's, with 80 feet of RG-8. Unfortunately it is only a 4 band 40 - 10 no WARC, BUT it'll tune all 4 bands to under 1.5:1 and no need for tuners. The dipole is another story. As a newcomer to major Elecraft items I hope it is not presumptuous of me to add to the wish list. My small station layout means that a remote ATU is much more effective than an inboard one. Therefor the tuning part of the KAT3 as an external unit (with say a 25 to 35 ft power and control cable) AND the antenna switching functions transferred to the KANT3 in the main rig would be very attractive, especially to accommodate a beam for 6m. When I get my K3 I will be stuck with a third party auto ATU and manual switching for 6M. I didn't order till batch three in mid July, so lets hope the $ stays at 2+ per £ until the New Year. I have been amazed at the close contact available via this reflector. Keep up the good work Eric. I (and others) have been hoping for something like this since the K2 came out. Elecraft introduced the T1, which is fine for QRP use, but sometimes you've gotta crank the power up a bit.
