something must be wrong with your receiver.

Hi Phil,

A lot of the traffic that used to go here has been split among the -KX and -K4
groups. But this list is alive and well. All general announcements are posted
here at minimum, and there are many general interest posts such as the thread
on HF-band activity I kicked off yesterday.

Ray,

Thanks for the reply and confirmation. I just received my own message
reflected back to me so I was hoping I would see another message and yours is
just the ticket I needed.

So, it is indeed working — I guess low turn out this Memorial Day weekend.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 postings: Main Elecraft reflector vs. Elecraft-K4 at groups.io [Clarification]

2021-05-17 Thread Wayne Burdick
Just to clarify: We *will* of course answer all K4 questions posted to
Elecraft's regular forum.

But threads originating on Elecraft-K4 (the other list) will be answered there,
without being re-posted on the regular list.

Thanks Wayne.

I'm sure we all appreciate how busy you must be.

It seems like a reasonable compromise and will help to keep K4 only
subjects separated from other Elecraft product discussions.

The number of postings we're making about K4 operation, etc., has jumped of
late. This is due to the increase in shipping rate.

I find that it's not practical to double-post everything to both the
Elecraft-K4 list and to the main Elecraft forum. So I'll be following these
rules:

- Major announcements (including this one :) will go to both. This includes:

  - documentation and software updates
  - K4-related product announcements
  - issue alerts (operational or hardware)
  - technical topics of broad interest

- Day-to-day discussion supporting K4 user questions will go only to the
Elecraft-K4 list.

I've resisted any sort of list bifurcation in the past, but I believe it's
called for in this case. Regular forum readers won't have to wade through so
many narrowly focussed K4 threads, and Elecraft-K4 readers can be assured that
no official Elecraft postings will be omitted from that list.

In the Reflector settings there is an option called Receive your own posts to

If you are not receiving your own emails you send to the list, that may have
been set to no. I believe it was set to Yes by default.
If you are concerned about your outgoing messages, you could also take a look

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector email problems

2019-11-18 Thread Jim McDonald
I have found the same since switching to Gmail. I had heard of it
happening with Gmail before, but am surprised it's happening to me because
I'm now forwarding from my regular email to Gmail and am sending through
qth.com servers, not Gmail.

Kevin,
I never see e-mail which I have sent into the reflector come back to
me.I do however find that my questions or comments are replied to. For
me it is normal not to see what had been sent in. Perhaps this is true for
others as well.

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector email problems

2019-11-17 Thread kevinr

Well that test worked so I will hook the original message to this one.

Good Evening,

Loggers moved in early Monday.  Today I am hearing the beeping like
after a CW contest.  Each time the harvester moves forward or backward
there are a series of blasts from the air-horn.  The logger told me it
is fed directly from the hydraulic cooling system's air pumps.  Luckily
he is done with the wood nearest the house.  That means it will be
quieter next week. Here is a link to the harvester he is using.
https://www.barko.com/products/tracked-harvesters/ With this machine he
is cutting, limbing, and bucking to length about one tree a minute.  If
the log he is cutting is unmarketable he bucks it up for firewood.
There is no way I will ever be able to use it all.

A note on our Elecraft CW Net exchange.  Since it is a directed net
I call for check ins then work each in order.  I send a signal report
and pass control to the operator.  They send me a signal report and
whatever it is they want to talk about and then pass control back to
me.  Weather is simple and often gets mentioned. Snow, ice, hail,
floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, forest fires, etc have been described.
Crop reports, pets, kids, and travel too. Occasionally a new antenna
will get checked. Other times a new piece of gear will get tested.  We
did hear the 1500 watt amp first-hand quite early in its history.  As
the KX1, K3, KX2, and KX3 came along they got checked in too.

Operators have used the legal limit down to milliwatts to get my
attention.  My ears were tested at both ends of that spectrum   Some
folks like to practice copying faster code so they follow along.  I get
many comments about net reports and how they could hear me even if they
did not check in.  I have never closed any of the nets; I think that
would be presumptuous.  At the end of every net I send QNF which means
there is a free net.  I normally am off the air at that point but I do
leave the radio on and can hear further exchanges.  It has been fun for
many years.

There was another short lived sunspot from cycle 25 this week.
That's two in less than a month.  I sense a trend.  Maybe this spring
we'll see a flowering of new spots.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2200z Sunday  (2 PM PST Sunday)
7047 kHz at z Monday  (4 PM PST Sunday)

73,

I B 1 2..OS/2 is what Windows could have been but failed because
of lack of support.

In the last few years that I was with the Feds in the early 1990s I had
two computers on my desk - the Uncle's Win3 box and my OS/2 box -
interconnected via a switch box in lieu of a KVM device. I would do my
work on the OS/2 machine and sneaker-net it on 3-1/2" floppies to the
Win machine for storage or transmission - this was long before the
current paranoia about using personal equipment for agency work. My
machine had an effective anti-virus, the Uncle's machine did not! I had
the same sort of setup in my private practice office with
an NT machine up until OS/2 became too difficult to administer.

Memories..

I've been doing that for almost thirty years, originally with PMMail,
then (and now) with Thunderbird. First, incoming mail is sorted into
separate folders, one for each reflector that I read. Then it's easy
and fast to read and delete (or keep) them. Even Yahoo's Windows

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector format

2019-05-21 Thread David Woolley
I believe with Outlook, you can drag the contents of a MIME digest email
into a folder.

Although there isn't anything native, for this, in Thunderbird, there
appears to be at least one add-on (undigestify) that will do most of
this. A quick skim suggest that it expands to the current folder, so
you may have to do an extra move.

Except for a bug that doubles Re: in the subject line, you can pull out
individual messages even with bare bones Thunderbird, and reply to them
with correct threading.

I've been doing that for almost thirty years, originally with PMMail,
then (and now) with Thunderbird. First, incoming mail is sorted into
separate folders, one for each reflector that I read. Then it's easy and
fast to read and delete (or keep) them. Even Yahoo's Windows interface
makes it easy to do this too.

Both Google Mail and the webmail client of my ISP work fine for that.
There is a checkbox next to each email  ... you double click the email
itself if you want to read it, or you single click the box to mark if
for delete if you don't.

I really don't see what the issue here is.  Unless he's talking about
the digest, and in that case he's trying to defeat the purpose of the
digest ... which is to aggregate all posts into a single one.

That's a really weird comment.  Almost all mail readers and webmail
clients list incoming messages in a nice orderly fashion with full
visibility into the subject line.  What more do you want?  Are you
trying to do that on a digest?

Check your settings to see if your mail delivery is in digest format.

Unfortunately, mail list software is good at aggregating messages but once
aggregated it's hard to unscramble the egg at the receiving end. If you
are in individual message delivery, your client can do a satisfactory job
for you at the cost of some extra upfront work setting things up.

Neil,

If you receive the individual emails using a good email client running
on your computer, you can do just as you requested. Unfortunately, it
does not work that way for the digest nor if you are reading via webmail.

My email client has a filter set to move all incoming email with
"[Elecraft]" in the subject line to a folder that I have named
"Elecraft" - that way I do not have all those posts in my main Inbox.
I can open the Elecraft folder and read or delete individual emails
and/or respond to those I wish to reply to. In other words, I have my
own version of a "digest" in that folder that I can handle like any
other email I receive.

Neil,
I regularly delete posts whose titles do not interest me and click to
open those which do. This is no hard task and I do not receive the digest
so post comes through all day.

Thankfully the forum does not require a pass word such as use to be the
case on Yahoo. Eric does a pretty good job of keeping us in order and
sometimes I too have had my horns cut off.

The forum works and we have the principals of Elecraft in the muck with
us.

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector change?

2017-08-19 Thread Kevin der Kinderen
You can't get a group of hams together and not sway from the topic.
Impossible. And people will live happier lives if they understand this.
Hams talk, talk, talk and talk. Even their salutations after a good QSO can
drag on because they don't want to stop talking. Personally, I think that's
a good thing. It's a natural fit.

I could live with either this mail list or with a bulletin board type forum
with "categories" but really, this is good enough for me. With categories I
would have to read multiple sections to get in on all the action.

I do wish there was a way to easily move off the list for long, drawn out
or off topic discussions and in fact I kind of think there is. An air
conditioning conversation started out on this thread and moved off to a
small group sharing information by email. Turns out it is a very useful
conversation. Once you're on that list of people interested in a particular
subject it is kind of hard to get out of it because everyone would have to
remove you from their reply. One person doesn't and you're right back in
the conversation. But still a solution for this list.

It does get rough sometimes but when I start seeing a long thread that
doesn't interest me I just keep in mind... it obviously interests someone
else and I shouldn't try to shut them down (see below). I'm not the
moderator and really, I don't like rules that much anyway.

Apologies... I've added snarky comments to long, OT threads in the past.
Not good. Sorry.

Hello!

Does anyone else use Android mail to open email digests from this Elecraft
reflector on qth.net? Perhaps you have a suggestion on how I can read the
digest emails?

I get an email digest with attachments for each email. The attachments have
a ".msg" extension which Android doesn't know how to handle. In contract,
at my desk, the computer has outlook and can open these attachments and
display the emails with no problem.

I am hoping I won't have to log into my email provider just to use their
webmail interface.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Are you trying to say that K-9 is "not a dog" :-)
I use Thunderbird and do not have a Smartphone, so I am behind the times

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft reflector

2014-02-12 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
Folks,

Please, no personal criticisms or attacks of others on the list. Calling
someone here a LID is a direct list rules violation and calls for a personal
apology from the poster.

Personal attacks, snide remarks and rude statements are outside of the list
guidelines. Please also remember that we have a wide range of list users from
many regions of the U.S. and the world with different cultures and languages.
Posts from others are easily mis-interpreted, so please resist the urge to
quickly post a negative reply.

Criticizing a person's use of language in a post is also inappropriate. If you
have the urge to criticize the posting of another, please avoid rushing to hit
return and instead save it in your drafts folder overnight to see if it is
really worth posting in the morning. Most of the time, once viewed after a good
rest, it isn't.

Please remember that this is just a hobby, with a wide range of interests,
technical skill and time available for each of us to participate in it. The
bottom line - let's just have fun and respect everyone on the list.

Of course, drinking a little the Elecraft 'kool-aid' enthusiasm from time to
time is OK ;-) Those posts re-energize us and keep us putting in the long hours
each day to make more great radios and accessories.

[Elecraft] Reflector: K3 Roofing Filters

2013-08-07 Thread Ray Coles
Since this subject is current (and likely always will be!) I have to ask the
learned brethren which filter does experience show to be best for use with
JT65 mode. I currently only have the standard issue 2.7KHz filter, which of
course works OK for everything (except I suppose DSB and FM). If I used CW I
would definitely choose a narrow-band filter, but the waterfall display used
for JT65, PSK31 etc. might lead me to rely on a 2-3KHz filter for these
modes, even though the signal bandwidths are much narrower. My question is:
is anyone using narrower roofing filters and tuning across the waterfall to
squeeze the most out of those DX data stations? Or am I being dumb?

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector: K3 Roofing Filters

2013-08-07 Thread Bill Frantz
I do a lot of PSK31 on my K3. I use about 2K of bandwidth when
looking for signals. When I start a QSO, I narrow the bandwidth
-- some times all the way to 50 Hz -- to limit audio overload to
my sound card from nearby loud signals. I have a 250 Hz filter
installed, and the reduction in general noise when it cuts in is
noticeable. (I am away from my radio at the moment, but I put a
fair bit of gain boost into the filter definition for the 250 Hz
filter, I think about 6 dB.) Since filter switching in the K3 is
automatic with changing the DSP bandwidth, there is no extra
work for the operator in having the correct filter in-line.

Cheers - Bill, AE6JV/4

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector: K3 Roofing Filters

2013-08-07 Thread Matt Zilmer
For JT65, WSPR, etc. I just use the narrowest filter when on frequency
and the P3 to see where signals are. In my case, that filter is the
250 Hz.

With the K3, remember that you're not selecting a filter so much as
setting a bandwidth. Filters kick in as they're called for, and this
is slaved to the WIDTH or LO/HI control. You can also force a filter
selection (as with the K2) using the XFIL switch, but doing so forces
the WIDTH set to the rated filter bandwidth at the same time.

is anyone using narrower roofing filters and tuning across the waterfall to
squeeze the most out of those DX data stations? Or am I being dumb?

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector: K3 Roofing Filters

2013-08-07 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

It depends on conditions and software. For example JT65-HF does not
like to decode if it does not see the entire 200-2800 Hz audio spectrum
but WSJT-X seems to work fine with a restricted bandwidth. All of the
software is designed to cope with the entire 0 - 4000 or 0 - 5000 Hz
spectrum but there are times that it is advantageous to narrow the K3's
IF to prevent one or more strong close in stations from capturing the
AGC and reducing the gain.

Hello Mailman/net webmaster:

I am a new elecraft reflector subscriber and didn't realize there would be so

If so, please change my status and please email the address to get to the

2012-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Glenn,

Go to the bottom of any post and click on the Home link. That will
take you to the page where you can change your subscription parameters.

You have 2 options - set to No Mail, or set to the Digest mode. You
will be able to post, but will receive no email.
You can then either receive the once a day Digest, or if you choose No
Mail, you can look at the postings at Nabble or in the posting archives.

Go to the Elecraft website and select the eMail tab. You can then take
your pick of the several ways to view the Elecraft posts.

Let us not be too hasty to judge this beast. According to the
Elecraft price sheet, a comparable K3 setup will cost almost $6800 and
that does not give you a power supply or 200W, which is included with
the Kenwood.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kenwood's new rig? isnt this an elecraft reflector?

2012-05-11 Thread Fred Smith
The Kenwood comes out higher than a FTDX-5000 even at that figure and
Kenwood will have to beat that price point to stay in the running. An
established radio with benchmarks like the 5000 and K3 are hard numbers to
break and being they are both SDR with firmware releases the numbers keep
improving on both several times a month. I wonder if Kenwood is ready to
devote that kind of time and support level for the continued improvement of
the radio and bug fixes.

As everyone knows Elecraft is one of the very best for that and Yaesu has
kept up on the FT-5000 so far for 2 years. There one failing so far has been
the dreaded white line on the sub display on a few radios, not all but
enough to that it seems a supplier dropped the ball on that lot of oled's.
For the most part we are jumping the gun so far all it seems to be is
Vaporware till a working radio clears the FCC and goes to ARRL for testing.

Let's go back and talk about Elecraft in my case the K2 lol, I'm hot on it
for now.

[Elecraft] learning CW...off topic elecraft reflector...

2010-08-08 Thread John Ragle
Bill...

Good advice. You may be amused to hear MY version of reading some
printed material while listening for phrases. I spent 15 months in
west Germany (before the re-unification) as a guest of their gov't,
and took along my Kenwood TS-520 and a fold-up vertical. All of my
operation was done with the vertical clamped to the apartment balcony
and IN CW. With this set-up most of the stations I worked were German or
German-speaking, and learning to morse in German, both sending and
receiving, did absolute wonders for my speed.

I have always been a CW type (until recently, when PSK got my
attention), and had at that time a 35 wpm certificate from the ARRL, but
by the time I got back to the states, I could copy upwards of 65-70 wpm
in my head. I sent with a keyboard and a buffer, as i am a fast typist,
but it was the copying /in the head and not on paper with a pencil/ that
did all this for me. I figure if one uses a stick and the signal corps
letter system that 35 wpm is about the upper limit for hard copy. I
never tried to copy with a mill, but I type easily 100 wpm -- the best
high school course I ever took! -- so there was no problem keeping the
buffer full. It was the listening/copying that transformed my ability to
converse in CW.

The brain's ability to do this sort of thing is quite amazing...I
always felt like it was a tape unrolling inside my head...and your
comment about 45 wpm is certainly true. Due to a long lay-off, my CW
speed has slackened a bit, but I still have the experience of words and
phrases popping into my head rather than letter by laborious letter.

I thought that the FCC's deletion of the CW requirement was a
seriously retrograde step for ham radio. CW is certainly one of the
premium weak-signal modes available to the non-computerized part of the
world. I never learned to copy RTTY in my head, and the same applies to
BPSK31. I am not sure if /anyone/ can copy e.g. Olivia 16/500 by ear,
even though it sounds nice. Maybe Mozart?

The reflector itself probably is, but the various archives of it aren't. I

It just isn't possible to use email and keep an address secure, I'm afraid.

list of email addresses is secure. Anyone else have this problem?
Anything that can be done about it?

The list is ASAP (as secure as possible). The problem are the
recipients. If only one PC is kidnapped, the bad boys know the email
adresses there, also if it is not in the adress book. And if you wrote
sometimes a message to the list, the guy know also you adress.

Kevin,

The thought that you can do anything to totally avoid ever getting a SPAM
email - short of never sending out an email yourself is just not realistic.

Use a good spam filter along with up to date virus protection and ignore
them.

Nabble hides the email addresses of senders, but the QTH.net archive which
has been there since the list begin, does not.

Yes it hides the email address of senders, but not if it appears in the text
that someone quotes. And some people use email clients that quote like:

Interesting. That's not what I see. I wonder what conditions cause
nabble to cloak the addreses behind links and what conditions disclose
them.

For example, in this message, it ironically cloaks the addresses:

I don't know. Look at this one,

the page the reply from Simon Brown. Google finds my address in
several Nabble pages.

Re: [Elecraft] Reflector Traffic

2010-01-24 Thread Fred Atchley
Hi Gary, I suspect David is correct. Elecraft is concentrating on getting
the K144XV out the door. Being a very small company, they must focus their
resources.

Everybody is getting antsy about the P3 (its' my 2009 Christmas present!) I
can't imagine waiting for the Dayton Hamfest to introduce it. If the P3 is
ready to make Elecraft profits then they well move in that direction.
Anyhow, the sooner the P3 is in the hands of this group the quicker it will
be up to speed for a knockout blow at Dayton.
