Re: [Elecraft] external speakers
I found (and I can't remember where) a molded cable that had a 3.5mm TRS stereo plug and two longish cables with RCA connectors, one for each speaker. I cut the RCA connectors off. Look for a cable that you can peel apart all the way to the 3.5mm plug. You can of course solder this up yourself, but molded plugs seem to survive better at my station. http://www.showmecables.com/product/2-5mm-Stereo-Plug-to-Dual-RCA-Plugs-1-5-FT.aspx?gclid=CKjLwufY67cCFbGDQgodZHYAmw http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=90C0959CMP=KNC-GPLAmckv=|pcrid|20115734061|plid| http://www.amazon.com/electronics/dp/B0002KR1OG http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UG823K/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=1535523722pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1pf_rd_t=201pf_rd_i=B0002KR1OGpf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DERpf_rd_r=0HC8G8BNKPEQBK78B1TY http://www.vpi.us/cable-audio-rca.html 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of todd ruby Sent: Monday, June 17, 2013 10:52 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] external speakers I am trying to install a pair of KLH 970A outboard spkrs to my K3. Re: [Elecraft] external speakers
Todd, The best way is to build an adapter. The shell and ring connect to the right speaker and the shell and tip connect to the left speaker. Use whatever connectors you want for the speaker end of the adapter, and build cables to the speakers to match your choice of connectors. The - terminal of the speakers should connect to the shell of the 3.5mm stereo plug. You could eliminate the adapter and wire two speaker cables to the stereo plug eliminating the extra two connectors, but that means if you want to move things across the room (or elsewhere) the two speakers are tied together with the speaker cable. If that is not a problem for you, the - conductor for both speaker cables connects to the plug shell, the + conductor for the right speaker connects to the ring and the + conductor for the left speaker connects to the tip. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/17/2013 1:52 PM, todd ruby wrote: I am trying to install a pair of KLH 970A outboard spkrs to my K3. Re: [Elecraft] external speakers
The correct answer is: Both black wires go to the sleeve of the 3.5mm plug (ground). The red wire from the LEFT speaker goes to the tip of the 3.5mm plug. The red wire from the RIGHT speaker goes to the ring of the 3.5mm plug. How you manage that transition is up to you. I put 3.5mm plugs on both my speakers - the left speaker was connected to tip and sleeve while the right speaker was connected to ring and sleeve. Both 3.5mm plugs were connected to a Y cable (3.5mm stereo male to two 3.5mm stereo female) which plugged into the speaker jack. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] External Speakers for K3
I have a great radio speaker made in the 1950's by the National Radio Company. 11x12x8 inch metal cabinet with 9-inch diameter speaker (no amplifier). K3 sounds very nice with it (I also have a Sony stereo headset when I need to hear even better). CM500 sometime in my future. The current HK computer speakers used with the KX3 will be replaced by a West Mountain amplified speaker which is immune to RFI (my wife is using a pair on her desk top to eliminate my RF). If Elecraft ever considers it, a generic K-line cabinet would be desirable for making a pretty station. One could install whatever in it. No need for a speaker, power supply, and several other accessories that are obtainable anywhere. 73. Re: [Elecraft] External speakers for K3
While I tend to agree with the OP I also understand that it would be a rather mundane task for Elecraft to manufacture speakers and that their talents are bettert utilized in updating firmware, advancing the technology inside our great rigs and so on. What I did do to achieve great audio was put a pair of 5.5 Dynaudios (Danish audiophile grade woofer/mid-range drivers) in a pair of gray PVC junction boxes obtained from Home Depot. I cut the appropriate-sized mounting holes in the cover panels, stuffed some cotton balls inside, ran some tiny speaker wires through a small hole in the back and mounted the speakers with some nice stainless steel screws. Arguably overkill but since I already had the drivers on hand I thought why not put them to good use? They now elegantly perch atop my gear---and best of all---make the K3 loud and clear! 73, Jeff, NH7RO Sent from my home computer while eating a bowl of oats for breakfast. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I agree with those who say it is in our and Elecreft's best interest for them to concentrate on what they do best and let others excel in their own specialty. Speakers and power supplies are in that category. Probably not a lot of Return On Investment in designing speakers. Not a lot of gain for amateurs either. I use a pair of 4.25 square Realistic, AKA Radio Shack, Communication Speakers that are wired up to a stereo plug. Works great! If you search the archives for this list, either Wayne or Eric use and recommend the Chill Pill speakers. They are intended for use with iPods. I can't see Elecraft wasting their development time on a product that is widely available from many other manufacturers, and at a range of costs. Re: [Elecraft] External Speakers for K3
I was fortunate to find a pair of Radio Shack Optimus speakers (5 inch black cube) at a 2nd hand store for $5. They work great with my K3. You may be able to find something similar if you shop around a bit. These are non-amplified speakers and work quite well, no worries about RF feedback or other problems that sometimes occur with amplified varieties, and the K3 has more than adequate audio to drive these high efficiency speakers. Since the K3 tailors the audio response, there is not really a need for communications speakers - the RX EQ will shape the audio to your desires, so full range speakers will work great with the K3. For those who do SWLing, the full range speakers may be better for those users than communications speakers. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/22/2013 7:36 PM, Pete Lascell wrote: I too have used the 2-way radio speakers for more than 30 years and originally did with my K3. [Elecraft] External speakers for the KX3
I think the KX3 is a great little radio. I tend to loose it like my Mac Air. It disappears under bags and cables etc. My question to the list. I am looking for a good active or powered speaker to use with it. Something that I could use in the shack or portable to give me more hi fi and wattage than the small qrp audio system. Something that runs on 12 volts or batteries that is as portable as the KX3. I would be interested in what members are using that would be RF proof too. At the moment I am tying it into a small stereo amp that has an Collins R390A on the other side. One weighs in a 80 pounds the other at 1 1/2. I'm using an old set of Radio Shack Minimus 0.8 (40-1313) amplified speakers I had laying around with my K3. They are black and match the K3 nicely. Small but sound great and no hint of any RF problems at up to 500 watts. No longer made but if you can find some they work well. Powered by 4 D cells or external 6 volt source. They automatically turn them selves off after a few minutes without any input and come back on when it is resumed which helps save batteries. I will let everyone know how it turns out and compare them to my current Kenwood SP31. The HG-S100 look good in the pics. Price was right at 41.50 or so for all 3 shipped to my door! They offered HG-S300 and HG-S500 with some kind of noise reduction. I'm sure there are many more hi-fi options available but honestly this speaker I have appears to reproduce most of the audio spectrum coming from the K-3. Brendan: For general communications use I am very fond indeed of the speakers Motorola made for their various mobile rigs over the years, They are very cheap, efficient and sound great for good quality communications audio. These are not Hifi speakers but for speech / CW they do a superb job. Mostly they seem to be a pretty close match in size and colour for the K3 too. I agree completely. I have seen these available in 4-Ohm and amplified variants too. Pretty much every radio in the shack is connected to a Moto speaker and I still buy them at rallies, collecting stuff I might need someday must be habit Anyone know if the can K3 drive a 2Ohm speaker without bad stuff happening ? In a recent e-mail from Lyle Johnson, KK7P, he stated that, while not 'designed' to drive 2-Ohm loads, the K3s AF amp should probably work OK BUT that if one attempted to drive the speakers too hard, and the AF amp attempted to draw excessive current (and starts to overheat), the amp would go into a protective shut-down mode, rather than risk damaging itself. For what it's worth, MOST (possibly all nowadays) of the newer, plastic-cased, Motorola NON-amplified speakers are now 8-Ohms... there may be some 4-Ohm speakers in the newer-style plastic ('fitted back') cases, but I suspect that almost all have now been switched to 8-Ohm speakers. I would not use any speaker less than 8 Ohms with the K3. The audio amplifier draws more current and distortion increases as the load impedance decreases. Best case THD+N vs. frequency for the audio amplifier is three times WORSE with 4 Ohm loads compared with 8 Ohm loads. 2 Ohm loads are not even spec'd. 73, ... Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: I would not use any speaker less than 8 Ohms with the K3. Hi Joe, I've used 4-ohm speakers with the K3 for over two years and have yet to hear any distortion at moderate speaker volume. As long as the RFC47 modification has been made on the RF board, the AF amp chip can easily source the peak current needed for 4-ohm loads. It's true that in any AF amp, distortion increases as load Z goes down, but this is a floor effect compared to other factors usually present (atmospheric and pulse noise, AGC dynamics, transmitter IMD, etc.). The only problem we've had is with mono speaker plugs in conjunction with a setting of SPKRS=2, which can result in excessive AF amp current. But this situation is detected and corrected in the latest field-test firmware revision. I'll be releasing it to beta shortly. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] External speakers for K3?
By match closely, do you mean physical appearance or impedance? Speaker characteristics for SSB and CW may differ. The best overall compromise I've found over the past 45 years is the Heathkit HS-1661. It is very efficient, as in LOUD, has a thick aluminum cabinet with no vibration or peaky resonance. Radio Shack sells a replacement speaker that fits perfectly if needed. For CW only, the MFJ ClearTone, MFJ-281 is hard to beat. It peaks strongly at 700 Hz and is very sensitive. Cost about $12. The HS-1661 shows up on Ebay occasionally and usually sells for about $30 or so. I painted mine black. Modern stereo speakers will work but they usually have higher power ratings and require more power. Amplified speakers will also work well but could be affected by RFI depending on brand and model. Go for two, then you can take advantage of AFX. I use two small black communications speakers, designed for vehicle mounting and optimised for voice and are only 3-4 mm taller than the K3 -- one either side. This can only happen if you have CONFIG:SPKRS set to 2. If you set it to 1, the right speaker channel is turned off, so a mono plug can be safely used. In addition to this, an upcoming beta firmware release detects the case where SPKRS is set to 2, a mono plug is inserted, and speaker volume is set to a moderate or high level. (The firmware looks for excess receive-mode current drain due to the AF amp IC going into thermal shutdown.) If this happens, the K3 will automatically set SPKRS to 1, reminding you with a brief flashed message. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] External speakers?
Tim, Not addressing the aesthetics of the speakers, but pointing out other considerations. In addition to the K3, do you have other audio sources that you want to listen to while in the shack? If the answer is 'yes', you may want to consider something like I have here - reasonably good stereo speakers (mine are the old RS Solo-3B) that are fed by an audio power amplifier. Ahead of the amplifier is a Behringer 802 mixer that has inputs from an FM tuner, a tape deck, and the K3 as well as connections in and out of the computer soundcard. The sound is great. The soundcard feeding the mixer is different than the one connected direct to the K3 line-in/line-out for use with digital modes. I cannot comment on the RF immunity of this setup. My antennas are all resonant and located more than 80 feet from the shack, so there is little possibility of RF in the shack. Others with non-resonant antennas close to the shack location may experience problems. Consistent with Jim Brown's (K9YC) recommendations, the computer is bonded both to the radio and the mixer, and they are all powered from the same AC outlet. 73, Don W3FPR NZ8J wrote: I would like to use two external speakers with my K3 setting them up one on each side of the radio. Re: [Elecraft] External speakers?
I got a pair of Insignia bookshelf speakers Model: IS-SP3WAY SKU: 7314523 at best buy for $32, provides for great audio, especially with the AFX enabled http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7314523st=insigniatype=productid=1118843685964 enjoy - Wim NZ8J wrote: I would like to use two external speakers with my K3 setting them up one on each side of the radio. Has anyone found something that somewhat matches in color and size to the K3 and has a good sound? Seems like Kenwood used to make a smaller speaker that might work. Would like to hear from anyone who has a similar setup. Re: [Elecraft] External speakers?
The CB sections of most truck stops sell a variety of suitable external speakers. Mine are Barjan 320-701's. Radio Scrap has similar speakers, too. 73! [Elecraft] External speakers for the KX1
Hello everybody, I was out running errands with my wife today and we stopped in at a Bed, Bath, and Beyond store. While she was in line to do a return I noticed a 50% off clearance display that included a great little set of amplified speakers that I am going to use with my KX1. The speakers are manufactured by Excalibur Electronics and are called “iBlaster Cube.” They are intended for use with an iPod but should also work great with any little QRP rig that uses stereo earbud output. The speakers fold up into themselves, are powered by 4 AAA batteries or an included wall wart, and have a short lead that plugs directly into the earphone jack on the KX1. On sale they only cost $4.95! I plan on using them when I demonstrate my KX1 to others – no more “cheek-to-cheek” earbud sharing necessary! I don’t know if the sale was unique to this one store (Westland, MI) or if others will also have them. They had a pretty good supply on display. 73 Paul – N8XMS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
