Re: [Elecraft] K2 accessories order

2015-08-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ed,

That is a Field Test K2 serial number.
I recommend that you upgrade it with the K2ATOBKT and *all* the other
upgrade kits that are listed in the K2 A to B instructions. Do that
before considering adding any options.
I would also recommend that you upgrade the IF crystals to the newer
crystal set. If you have an old KSB2, take a look at the crystals that
came with it, and if they are not marked with an -S suffix, order the
set of 14 matched crystals so you have 7 to use in the base K2 and the
other 7 to use in the KSB2. If your KSB2 has the current level
crystals, you only need a set of 7 for the base K2.
If you want to change the KSB2 filter bandwidth to the newer 2.4kHz
width, add the SSBCAPKT when you build the KSB2.

Back to the base K2 upgrades, do the Alternate AF Gain Wiring Mod, and
if your K2 has been used for a significant time, replace the AF Gain
control.

Once you have added the A to B upgrades, you can start on the options.

2015-08-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ed,

To further address your original question --
If you add the KPA100 to the base K2, then those options that are
mounted in the K2 top cover are not compatible with the KPA100. That is
the KAT2, KIO2 and the KBT2.

If you wish to configure it as a complete K2/10 with a KPA100, consider
mounting the KPA100 in an EC2 enclosure. That is easiest done if you
add the KAT100-2 along with the EC2 enclosure. The KPA100 plugs right
into the KAT100-2 board. That does require that you have the KIO2 in
the base K2.

You will love that radio!! I got mine in October. Worked on it weekends
only.

Completed the K2, 160m kit, SSB kit, and 99% of the 100W kit in 6 days.

And it worked the first time!!!

It is by far my favorite radio.

You will have fun

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 on order

Hello,

This morning, I ordered a K2. I figured it would take a few days to
process
the order, pack the box etc. I received an E-Mail a while ago, it has
already been shipped. It should be here Wednesday. The UPS delivery date
is
not yet available, but normally from California to Utah is normally two
days.

The next week or so, will be fun. I love building stuff!!

Jim,
Congrats on taking on the K2! I'm just a couple of weeks ahead of you,
feverishly working on s/n 5853, the low power version.

Regarding the power supply-- I'm starting out with a Pyramid PS-4KX (13.8 V.
3A continous, 4A surge) that I have on hand. Since I also purchased the KBT2
internal battery option, I may look for a small Astron supply with an
adjustable voltage. I understand the internal battery requires at least 14V at
the K2 power plug input for proper charging.

73 happy building!

Chuck and all,

With the internal battery, there is an alternative to powering the K2 with a
14.1 volt supply - make provisions to attach a 3 state charger directly to
the battery terminals. To see how that can be accomplished safely, check
out my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com

If you're happy with your Astron, why not buy one
of the smaller ... say 7A or 10A ... Astrons? They
also make some nice low-profile cabinet units.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 on order!

2006-11-26 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
In addition to the smaller Astrons, Ten Tec makes a small 11-amp supply: the
model 937. It's about the same footprint as the K2 but about half as high
as a K2. Remember, you're looking at ICAS or intermittent duty ratings,
not continuous duty, unless you are planning to put a 15 watt unkeyed
carrier on the air and leave it there permanently (or until FCC and your
fellow Hams storm your front door).

WARNING, WARNING, WARNING Will Robinson! (Remember Lost in Space or have I
dated myself yet again?)

Do NOT put your K2 on top of or next to a power supply, especially a
linear power supply. The magnetic field around the power transformer will
invoke various gremlins in the K2. The K2 has been hardened against most
of these gremlins, but it's not absolutely problem-proof. The magnetic field
from the power transformer flopping about at 60 Hz gets into the toroids and
can cause various things from frequency warble on the signal to hum on the
carrier.

Recommend keeping a small supply at least 6 to 12 inches away from your K2.
After discovering that my supply went on a stool under the operating desk,
freeing up space on the desk and keeping it a couple of feet from the rig.

Santa is loading up his sleigh with a K2!

Any recommendations on a 5A power supply that won't dwarf this and behave
electrically?

I've got a 20A Astron that powers my current rig that I'd like to move to
the lab.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 on order! - Power Supply

2006-11-26 Thread Craig D. Smith
Hi Jim ...

Congratulations on the K2 order - you will love it.

Any recommendations on a 5A power supply that won't dwarf this and behave
 electrically?

I'm using a Gamma. It is a VERY small power supply - only 3.5 by 1.5 by
5 and weighs a little over a pound. It seems to be a high quality unit
with an innovative design - A low powered supply supplemented by an internal
Super Cap for peak loads. As far as I can tell, it is absolutely quiet EMI
wise. Mine is 6 inches away from my K2 and no electrical noise. It is
actually overkill for a base K2, but in spite of its diminutive size will
actually power a 100W SSB rig or about 80 W CW in their normal duty cycles.
Should be a very flexible unit for travel, etc., especially if you ever
upgrade to the 100W amp. Have had mine for 5 months now and really like it.
Have had lots of round the clock use from it during Sweepstakes, CQ WW DX
contest, etc. Check it out at: www.gammaresearch.net and also see the EHam
reviews. I have no connection with the company.

Enjoy the build process ;)
