Re: [Elecraft] KX2 question

For such documents that I (might) need when not at the computer, I use
Dropbox.  That way it's in several places at once, including on my phone
(which is always with me).

It's free, up to small storage limits, adequate for that task. If I need
to share something, I send the link (which if a large file, doesn't clog
my LAN, once it's in the cloud).

I think I did a device reset to go back to turn CW announce OFF.

I also note that I appear to need a newer version of the manual that

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Mic

2022-10-08 Thread Lee Hiers
I know Morse. I operate CW 95% of the time.

My order is for a long-promised and non-delivery-updated power amp for a
K3/10. And before you come up with some BS about "now's a good time to try
QRP", I've operated 11 of the last 12 years at 5W or less.

The fact is, Elecraft's poor communications on all these delays is
inexcusable.

I've been an Elecraft fan and supporter ever since I purchased my first
Elecraft rig over 10 years ago, and recommended them to many for their
superior products and excellent customer service. That is over.

You people who are calling us whiners because of the poor customer service
we have received from Elecraft are doing the company a huge disservice, as
you're just pouring salt in the wound with snide comments.

Friends,    Why bring up the CW v SSB canard.   There is a supply issue.     I
too prefer Wayne to stick to engineering new features and work arounds.    It
is good that on iccassion he lets us know what he is doing.   Wayne and Eric
are active hams.    A complaint was warranted but Elecraft is a small first
class company in a struggle.    They are not alone.          Peace my good
friends - your points are well made.    Elecraft is under pressure and I just
pray her principals do not retire at the normal age.     As much as I
appreciate the market, please do not go the Drake or TenTec route.   So many

I fly constantly and have been taking my KX2 with me every single time for the

have been stopped or searched other than the general X-ray machine as per usual

I can fully agree and confirm this! My daughter studies in Tel Aviv and
everytime I am going to visit here, I take my KX2 with me. Even with El
Al there is no issue at all to take it on board as carry on.

The ONLY issue I have... my backpack used as carry-on contains the KX2,
a X230 Laptop, a Kindle and my D300 (incl. 16-85mm lens)... this needs
to be unpacked before and packed again after the x-ray machine... and it
is quite heavy ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 on commercial airplane

2022-06-28 Thread Mark Goldberg
I've been a member of aviation standards committees, and the quality of the
members is similar. The best engineers from multiple companies come
together, along with hundreds of years of combined experience. The battery
standards committee was across the hall from ours one time. Theirs was much
more heated. These standards are indeed there for a reason, and based on
real world experience. People from the NTSB, Transport Canada, and similar
agencies also attend. They have investigated many accidents and want to
make sure what went wrong and killed people does not happen again. They, in
my experience, are some of the sharpest people I have met and worked with.
I had long talks with the folks that investigated Swissair 111. That is one
reason I am so careful with electrical installations, at home and even in
our RV, which has 400 Ah of LifePO4s under where we sleep.

I believe that about a 20 Ah LiFePO4 is about the largest that can be put
in your carryon. I have several smaller ones.

One advantage to having batteries in your carryon is that you will not be
selected to put the carryon in the luggage compartment if the overheads are
full. Tell them there are lithium batteries in there and they will select
other luggage.

All of your post is well said, Jan. We have the right to our opinion,
but we don't have the right to endanger others by acting out on the
basis of our ignorance.

For nearly 40 I've been a member of the Standards Committee of the
Audio Engineering Society, and lead author our Standards on EMC. I can
report that all of our Standards are based on Applied Science, and the
result of serious engineers who are practitioners in a broad range of
pro audio -- broadcast, recording, live sound -- all with a solid

issue, are quickly sent to the back benches. And all of us have an

systems WORK, in the REAL WORLD.

One of the things that design professionals from different engineering
disciplines do in design meetings is play "what if" scenarios to
evaluate design decisions. A prime example in the real world I've often
cited is, the design team of the Fukushima nuclear reactor failing to
ask, or failing to have the imagination or education to come up with
possible answers to the question, "What Could Possibly Go Wrong With
Putting Emergency Power Generators in the basement?" In 2011, Mother
Nature answered rather emphatically that question that should have been
asked or satisfactorily resolved, but wasn't. Note that this is an
example to prove a concept, not an "attack" on anyone. I've been in lots

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 on commercial airplane

2022-06-28 Thread Geert Jan de Groot

I tried telling the TSA guy a little box of electronics and such was for my
hearing aid.
He thought I was spoofing him and called his supervisor when he asked if it
received Fox News, and I said not in my house. I explained it was the Bluetooth
gear for broadcasting TV audio into the earpiece. A little demo for the TSA
folks was cordial but I almost missed the flight.
One step for man, a giant step for mankind.

There are restrictions on LiPo batteries for a reason. Restrictions on
maximal capacity of the battery and how the battery is packed - inside a
radio OK, loose not OK.

I am pretty sure the KX2 with built-in cells is OK since these can be
sent unrestricted in mail. The Bienno may or may not be - bigger
capacity, loose battery, and the cells are only protected by plastic
foil. If the cells get crushed in your carry bag, what happens?

If you've ever had a LiPo go rogue on you you will understand why TSA
has issue with the possibility of LiPo incidents inside a metal tube you
cannot step out of.

We as hams may "know it better" but the fact of the matter is that the
TSA rules are there to keep flights safe. Trying to play them by telling
them a lie is dishonest, dangerous and perhaps even illegal. *If* you
know better, you should assist TSA in managing the risk, not lie to
them, even if that means that you cannot carry the battery you want to
carry.

I've carried some pretty interesting stuff over the years and always did
so fully open. It has raised issues, there has been cases where a
manager needed to get involved, but on a proper trip this was all
prepared in advance (by asking the airline, not a mailing list) and
everyone was happy with the approach and the preparation taken. I also
found people to be pretty accommodating if asked correctly.

And if you feel otherwise and know it all better - it's a free world and
everyone has an opinion! - then I kindly ask you to identify what flight
you will be on so I will take the next flight, thank you.

2022-06-27 Thread Edward Mccann
Skip,

I tried telling the TSA guy a little box of electronics and such was for my
hearing aid.
He thought I was spoofing him and called his supervisor when he asked if it
received Fox News, and I said not in my house. I explained it was the Bluetooth
gear for broadcasting TV audio into the earpiece. A little demo for the TSA
folks was cordial but I almost missed the flight.

One step for man, a giant step for mankind.

Bill I haven’t had any problems with having my KX2 in my carry on bag, even
with mic and headset along with other interconnecting wires. On my last trip I
got flagged because of all the gear. While explaining to the TSA agent about
ham radio I actually powered up the KX2 and showed him how it worked, he
thought it was pretty neat.
By the way it wasn’t the KX2 they wanted to checkout it was something else.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 WTB(uild) external amplified speaker

2022-04-15 Thread Andrew Moore
Hi all - thanks for the replies regarding speakers.

I do occasionally check the local thrift shop to see if there are any
electronics on the shelf to take apart for components, and they do
currently have a set of amplified PC speakers for short money. But I got
bit by the homebrewing bug recently so I want to build something from
salvaged components. I think I have everything on hand now to do that.

I mentioned this project to my son a few weeks ago - told him I bought some
cheap amplified speakers at Best Buy then returned them, unopened, because
it occurred to me I'm a ham so I should be able to build my own instead. He
says good idea, that way you'll appreciate them more every time you use
them.

How it took him 5 seconds to realize that, and 30+ years (as a ham) for me,
is beyond me ;)

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 temperature

2021-08-22 Thread Gary Slagel via Elecraft
I have trouble with the KX2 keyer malfunctioning when I'm operating with the
radio sitting outside in direct sunlight.  It happens after 20 or 30 minutes of
steady contest style QSO's on SOTA activations.  I haven't spent any time
troubleshooting other then trying to keep it shaded with whatever is handy to
droop over it.
I wonder if the Pro Audio Engineering Kx22 Heatsink kit would help with that
issue?

The Kx22 provides 200% or more key-down time in transmit and there is
more data on the website.  The good news is the do not impact the size
of the rig at all.  By this I mean we engineered them to only have fins
which protrude only as far as the BNC connector on the right panel where
the PA FETs are attached.  Any case the KX2 fit in before it will still
fit once the Kx22 is attached.

We have several distributors around the world which sell them including
GEMS in the USA, Lutz Electronics in Switzerland and others.

I expect he meant “existed for the KX2/KX3”.

The Heathkit SB-230 is conduction-cooled with a beryllium oxide thermal link to
conduct heat away from the anode to the heat sink.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 temperature

2021-08-21 Thread Gary Memory
I guess I misspoke. I have boxes and boxes of "heat sinks" that I've
collected thru the years. I use them all the time. I'm constantly looking
on eBay for a size or two, for a given project, almost on a monthly basis.

I had no idea that after-market heat sinks existed specifically for the
KX2. And they look very nice as well! But again, I've never thought to
look until I saw this thread.

My sincere apologies.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 temperature

2021-08-21 Thread Gary Memory
I had no idea heat sinks existed. But, I've never looked, I suppose.
Looks like a good idea, but I'm guessing the radio will no longer fit in
its case. I ordered a set of heat sinks to try 'em out.

My process to deal with the heat is perty much what Brian said.

Thanks for the thread! I learn, I win.

I believe the trip temp. is 60c. The rate you get there, of course, depends a
lot on power setting, mode and ambient temperature. I’ve found at normal shack

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 not remembering Mic gain setting on ADATA

2021-07-22 Thread Gareth M5KVK
It appears the problem is more deep-seated.

I’m away /P right now and decided to do some FT8 using a Raspberry Pi. I set up
the Tx drive (seemingly) OK, by pressing Tune on WSJT-X and adjusting Tx level
and Mic gain to get the right amount of ALC.
However, when I then try to Tx again, TX LED lights but there is no drive. A
Very slight nudge of the MIC gain causes 5-bars on the display, but next time I
Tx it’s back to no drive.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Subject: Trouble using MH3 microphone with KX2

Hi all
I’ve typically been using my MH3 with a KX3 for /P operating from my campervan.
This last week I’ve been doing some SOTA activations, so I’ve been using my KX2
instead.

I noticed a couple of issues when setting the Mic gain.

I followed the advised procedure and reduced PWR=0, TX CMP=0, squeezed the PTT
and spoke normally into the MH3. I found that there was no indication at all on
the ALC meter until at about MIC=65, ALC jumped to 6-7. Mic bias is on.

I also noticed on a few occasions that when operating, pressing PTT had no
effect until I slightly increased the MIC gain.

The MH3 works fine on my KX3, so I’m assuming the MH3 is OK, but I can’t figure
where the problem lies.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 to a handlebar mount

(Mike sent me some pictures off-list; the cross-section of the bar is
roughly elliptical, maybe 2-3x taller than it is wide.)

It looks like a strap mount might work. I've got a cheap one for a speaker
on my bike, but if you're going the RAM route, something like this might
work:

https://www.rammount.com/part/RAP-SB-187U

or if you want something a little beefier:

Take a look at Lido Mounts (www.lidomounts.com )
that offers a bicycle mounting bracket that one can then attach various
mounting points for different items such as HTs and front panels of various
radios. See if the panel they offer will for the KX3 will work with the KX2.

I have a Segway I2 which has their mounting piece for a bicycle that I’ve
attached their mount to hold a HT using the belt clip. So the question is
whether you can ‘mix and match’ to get what you need. There is a mounting
package for the KX3, but it includes hardware for mounting the assembly in a
vehicle, not a bicycle. You can call them at 949-690-5616 to discuss your
needs. They’re on the West Coast so take that into account when calling them
if you’re not on the West Coast yourself.

Hope this helps,

Would the Side KX KX2-Mount

You can add i.e. any RAM Mount parts to fit it to whatever you want.

Typically 1.2 to 1.5 amps, varying somewhat with supply voltage and load
impedance.

> 2. What is the narrowest receiver filter width on CW?

50 Hz primary audio filter, 30 Hz audio-peaking filter (APF). These can be
controlled independently. The bandpass can be widened up to about 4 kHz, as
well as shifted. The KX2 also has DSP-based noise blanking, auto-notch, and
noise reduction.

I have the kx2 and absolutely love it.

1. What is the approximate current draw for the KX2 on transmit at 5 watts
CW?2.

At 10 watts, it is 1.87 amps. At 5 watts, it is 1.49 amps. Receive is about
0.15 amps.

2. What is the narrowest receiver filter width on CW?

It goes down to 0.05 kHz.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2/KX3 Heatsinks

2021-03-26 Thread Julia Tuttle
I have one of these and I love it -- I don't have to think twice about
running 15 W on FT8 or JS8Call.

(I also like their power supply -- I don't (yet) need the amperage the
SS-30DV can put out, it's a lot easier to drag to my girlfriend's house,
and it hasn't caused any RFI issues )

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 tx low power on 80M SSB

2021-03-22 Thread Nate Jedinak
Elecraft indicated this behavior pointed to a failure in the output block.
Since Elecraft has mine now for repair of this issue, we will get a definitive
answer as to whether this is firmware or hardware.

Great to hear, Dave!

I’ll be posting the outcome of my KX2’s trip back to elecraft, so watch the

2021-03-21 Thread Dave Jones
Thank you to Nate W1NAT and Reed W4JZ for your quick responses to my post. I
have carried out the TX gain calibration as you have both suggested and that has
fixed the problem. I now have the correct power output on all bands from 80
through to 12M. 10M is still a little low initially (about 4W) but the power
comes up with brief CW carrier or just as I talk on SSB to 10W. I can live with
that as I don't use 10M very often.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 tx low power on 80M SSB

2021-03-20 Thread Nate Jedinak
Dave,

I have that exact problem with my KX2 on 10m. See my recent thread here:
https://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg247537.html

Elecraft support said that situation is indicative of a failure in the output
stage, and my KX2 is currently back at elecraft for repair. I sent it back in
early March. I will update my reflector thread with the outcome of the repair,
so watch this list for details.

I never use 80 on that radio, so I’m not sure if the issue existed there,
unfortunately.

2021-03-01 Thread Tim Tucker
Mine does that too. What works for me is to tweak the mic gain up and then
back to the same level and it starts working normally. Seems to me like
there is a firmware bug with the radio that hasn't been figured out and
addressed yet.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Starts Off with Low Output on 10M

2021-03-01 Thread Nate Jedinak
Unfortunately, this did not fix my particular KX2. TX Gain calibration was
completed successfully, but the same issue persists.

I also did the TX bias calibration, and noted that bis on Q6 took ~45 seconds
to complete, vs the 3-10 the manual suggested. Q7 was fast. Q6 wavered a lot
between .3-.7v. I suspect this suggests the problem is perhaps indeed
hardware-related.

Thank you to everyone on the list who responded with ideas to check. I’ll get
this one packed up and sent back to Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Starts Off with Low Output on 10M

2021-02-28 Thread Brian Hunt
Nate,
A couple more questions:

Does the KX2 do the same thing on CW?

Did Elecraft say anything about doing a TX gain calibration? This can be done
with the KX2 utility although I haven’t done it on mine, just on my K3. It sets
the per-band gain coefficients Be sure to save the current CONFIG file so you
can restore it if needed. You will need a good dummy load an a stable power
source. The procedure is on p. 38 of the Rev A5 Manual.

Good luck,

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Starts Off with Low Output on 10M

2021-02-28 Thread Nate Jedinak
I have replicated this behavior both with the internal as well as the MH3
external mic. Of course set at different mic gain levels, always per the manual
which as you said suggests 5 bars of ALC. I have tried lower and higher mic
gain settings just for fun, with the same results.

I don’t think this is an mic gain issue, as it does happen on any other band
I’ve used (80, 40, 20) and only on 10m. I made a video showing the behavior
here, let me know what you think: https://youtu.be/7wWd6vRYSxo

I have had great QSOs on 40 and 20 so far, and feedback that my audio is
extremely low on 10 until it “warms up” and then reports there are excellent,
also. I usually talk on 10m for 45-60 minutes every weekend morning and it
performs well once it’s up to power.

The KX2 uses a control loop to set power. Make sure you have sufficient audio
drive to energize the loop. Using the ALC display set the MIC GAIN so you have
5-7 bars on voice peaks, per the manual.

What MIC are you using? Have you tried the internal MIC?

I haven’t but you might find answers to this question on the SOTA reflector
(https://reflector.sota.org.uk ) as a few SOTA
folk have the radio/pack and have posted on it.

FWIW, I've done 100s of SOTA activations and packs are a very personal choice
and I tend to think that companies that make a living from packs know what they
are doing and can design a pack that distributes weight etc. Not sure ICOM
falls in that category.

It was a feature added in by firmware upgrade 2.61. The older manuals may not
show this but the newer ones do. I keep a copy of the firmware upgrade list
handy. 73, John W2XS

KX2 MCU 2.61 / DSP 1.46, 5-31-2016

* AUDIO-CW USER INTERFACE IMPROVEMENTS: The KX2 can emit CW characters when
switches are pressed and knobs are turned, etc. For details, see the
document, “Elecraft KX2 Physical Description and Audio-CW User Interface.”
Audio-CW tones can be enabled in the menu (see MENU:SW TONE), or on
power-up, by holding APF along with RATE and A/B. Release RATE and A/B
first, then release APF. This sets the speed to 20 WPM. The menu entry
provides more speed selections.

2020-12-02 Thread Rich NE1EE
Rick,
Thanks for the post. I don't need real time "time" for things these days...if I
do, I turn to an RTOS...but I am naive in this area.
Since reconfiguring my Windows time specs, including not using the windows.time
server, I have not seen a time offset exceeding 0.5s...in fact, the highest I
recall is 0.3s...that is 10X the error you report for Meinberg

I visited the site, and found
https://www.meinbergglobal.com/english/info/ntp.htm
https://www.meinbergglobal.com/english/sw/ntp.htm#ntp_stable

so it appears that there is a software-only solution? I don't need to support
one more piece of hardware, because my timing needs are not that great now.
Thanks for the suggestion...I had not heard of Meinberg previously.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 & FT8

2020-12-01 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I

Rich,

You WANT to change what Windows does because a generation ago, to allow
their server software to function, they increased the error gap in the
NTP system.  It allows WAY too much drift and they've never cleaned that
up (because most users don't care).

I use and suggest Meinberg; which can replace the Windows NTP service.
It's free and keeps my computers within .03 seconds to standard (on very
slow Internet) without requiring high overhead (it just works and well).

I think that I used to use that. It sure looks familiar. But I now use routines

same time as your system from a visual perspective, then you're close enough.

2. If you are using an FTDI based USB to serial converter for CAT control, be
sure Serial Enumeration in the advanced properties for the COM port is
unchecked (it can do weird things to your system). I also check the box to
disable modem control at start up.

2. In the WSJT-X settings ensure that Test CAT and Test PTT work correctly. Be
sure that the Test PTT causes the radio to go into TX. I use either CAT
control or H/W control for PTT trigger depending on what I can do with the H/W.
I generally prefer H/W control. It's faster in the system to flip a bit, then
to send a string a bits via the RS232.

3. Setup the Audio in WSJTX to point to the correct devices.

4. In the Windows Sound control panel ensure levels for both Recording and
Playback for the device in use for the radio are somewhat reasonable - say 75%.
It's just a starting place. Also be sure the devices are not the defaults -
that will prevent sounds being sent to the radio you don't want. Can't tell
you how times I hear audio play back of either alerts or some streaming media
come through. All newly plugged in sound devices are automatically made
default by Windows. IMHO, it's a stupid thing for Windows to do and I've never
found a setting to prevent that.

5. Check the receive is reasonable in WSJTX - generally between 40 and 60 on
the WSJTX meter. Play with settings in the sound control panel and/or the
radio until things look right.

6. Set the radio for 0 power and hit the tune button in WSJTX. The radio
should go into TX.

7. Using the Sound panel control for the radio playback device, the Pwr slider
in WSJTX and/or the radio mic gain, tune until ALC is just starting kick in.
On other Elecraft radios, that's usually the 5 ALC bar flickering. I try not
to have any setting at the max.

If any step is not working, diagnose and fix that step before proceeding. This
is what I have found works best for me. Your mileage my vary.

What is the sync time tolerance? For example, following the directions here
https://www.windowscentral.com/how-manage-time-servers-windows-10
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-internet-time-update-interval-windows

or using any number of products such as D4, you can be within 0.01, +- 0.01 s...

Windows defaults to syncing time weekly, but I have mine set at hourly.
At any time, I can go here
https://time.is/

to see how far off I am...is this close enough for FT8? One note I saw said
"But if you can get your clock within, say, a half a second, you'll be fine for
FT8 and FT4." and this method certainly exceeds that spec.

I'm not an FT8 kinda guy, but I ran across this

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 External battery question

2020-11-06 Thread Tim McDonough N9PUZ
I often operate my KX2 from the internal battery. As a "backup" source I
frequently just take a second KXBT2 along. When you plug it into the
external power jack the KX2 will draw it's power from the pack with the
higher voltage.

As a battery, the KXBC2 has proven safe and reliable by thousands of users.
It's about 2.5 AH at 11 V, considerably higher in energy density than the

The 12V Bioenno batteries have an internal battery management circuit.
They require 14.6 - 15 Volts input to charge properly. The BMC will
prevent overcharging and Bioenno Support says it is safe to leave the
charging voltage permanently applied.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 / WM1 Reporting Conflict

2020-09-30 Thread John Oppenheimer
Hi Jim,

Both the KX2 and W1 need to be calibrated to a standard. The W1 manual
4.5V is a rough calibration. As I remember, KX2's are calibrated at the
factory at some (I've forgotten) power level. Both the KX2 and W1 are
somewhat non linear.

For my shack, I've decided that a DL1, along with an accurate 10M Ohm
Fluke DVM is the standard. No adjustment required and is as accurate as
the 1% load resistors, DL1 diode drop voltage, and DVM accuracy.

Hi Dan,

Flip the bezel over when you reinstall it. This will compress the convex
catenary side against the case, reducing the gap.

Note that at some point in the KX2's history we revised the bezel, moving the

So, you are telling us that the KX2 has a few bugs?

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 ZOOM Presentation -- Virtual Expo

2020-08-08 Thread Clark Macaulay
Wayne,

As a person with an enginneering background (never used), I really enjoyed
your talk this afternoon. I dialed in about mid-way through the 3D talk
and wonder if you mentioned the walking stick and binoculars behind you.
Methinks you like the out-of-doors for more than radio.

The best part of the talk was when you said "Elecraft makes cool stuff".
Yes indeed as my K1, K2, KX1 and K3 attest. I've resisted the KX2 so far
as I do don't much adventure radio,
but then it is so cool

Of course, we’d like to see the 3D models of the K4, too :-)

2020-08-08 Thread Wayne Burdick
My pleasure, Grant. First Zoom presentation for me. I wasn't sure how the
content (3D model tour) would go over, but the attendees turned out to be quite
enthusiastic. The part I wasn't worried about was stage fright (year of playing
guitar for large crowds, solo :)
