Re: [Elecraft] coaxial-cable patent# 1407 on 6apr1880.
Heaviside only applied for one patent, but it was a big one. He never collected any royalties on it, and all of his other inventions were published without patent protection, as he thought it his duty share his knowledge. He started out as a telegrapher, and began developed his math skills by finding faults in undersea cables. A truly amazing fellow. For the best book I have found about that era, try "The Maxwellians" by Bruce Hunt, available on Amazon. 73 John N5CQ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of JEROME SODUS Sent: Saturday, January 19, 2019 10:59 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] coaxial-cable patent# 1407 on 6apr1880. Re: [Elecraft] Frequency Anomaly -- Tamed
Remember that what you have set is a fixed number representing the TCXO frequency that is correct only at the time you adjusted it. The reason being is that the TCXO frequency drifts. Mine will move +48Hz from a cold start to plus four hours. Thereafter is hardly moves. This drift will result in the display frequency and the true frequency diverging. In my unit I have concluded that setting REF CAL after about an hours warm up is a reasonable compromise. However, I guess not all TCXOs will drift the same way or at the same rate. The biggest driver is likely front panel temperature because the TXCO is located within that environment. My K3 front panel is pretty loaded with the sub RX dsp board and the DVK. It increases from +24C at switch on and reaches +39C after a couple of hours. This is easily recorded and from that you can judge what would be a suitable warm up period before doing the Method 2 calibration. All this was determined when I started using a 10MHz GPS disciplined reference and the K3 REF LOCK option. Re: [Elecraft] coaxial-cable patent# 1407 on 6apr1880.
Hi Jerome, Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention. One of my most precious books is the biography of Oliver Heaviside by Paul J. Nahin. (Oliver Heaviside: The Life, Work and Times of an Electrical Genius of the Victorian Age). He was a genius indeed. We have a Professor of Physics here in Australia called David Jamison, University of Melbourne. He is a follower of Oliver. I attended a lecture by him some years ago. Very inspiring, Oliver went within a whisker of defining Relativity. Like Oliver I am a ferm believer in the ether, just that these days we call it dark matter and dark energy. Certainly one of my heroes. Cheers, Glen, VK1FB On Sunday, January 20, 2019, JEROME SODUS wrote: > Hello, > > > Walter K6WRU has written, "I think we take coaxial cable for granted. [Elecraft] K3s can only transmit wsjt if the K3s codec is windows default.
"Hope you check your windows setting, you might be surprised." No surprises here. I have never had my rig CODEC as the default sound playback device. I don't have Windows 10 but, in every earlier version I have used, it is easy to ensure that the rig CODEC is not the default playback device. Simply right click the speaker icon in the system tray and select playback devices. You will see a new "Sound" window with all playback devices listed. One will be shown as the default device. Ensure the default device is not your rig CODEC. This action does not require WSJT-X, or any other application, to be running since the selection of the default sound device is not application specific. If, after you right click the speaker icon, you select volume mixer you should then see "Device" on the left side of the mixer window. Click the device menu and select the rig CODEC. You will see all the apps that are connected to that CODEC as long as they are running and have recently produced a sound output. The assignment of the rig CODEC to WSJT-X is done simply in the WSJT-X file/settings/audio menu. As with all digital mode applications, selection of the correct device is easier if the rig CODEC has been assigned a meaningful name. Mine is called "TS-590 RX" and "TS-590 TX". The name can be changed by speaker icon right click, playback devices, select the rig CODEC then properties, edit name in name field. Perhaps someone would confirm that all these steps are also applicable in Win 10. Re: [Elecraft] K3s can only transmit wsjt if the K3s codec is windows default.
Perhaps the point of my original post has been missed. The only way I could get RF out of the K3s was to assign the K3s codec as my default in the sound settings. If I did not do this in the windows sound control panel, the K3s would go into transmit mode with WSJT-x but zero output. Doing this allowed computer sounds to be transmitted with WSJT-X, maybe with AFSK. Yes, in the WSJT-X software I always had the K3s codec checked. Until I made this change in the windows app volume and device properties page 2 days ago, that was the only way I could transmit with WSJT-X. I cannot be the only person with this issue. This is not a trivial issue, we all want our signals to be clean and for months I had no idea I was occasionally transmitting garbage with my K3s. I'm sure others here are doing the same. 73, Gary KA1J > "Hope you check your windows setting, you might be surprised." > > No surprises here. Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 external amplifier
Wolfgang, Connect K60XV J2 pin 2 to a jack and you will have an Amp Keying output. There is just barely room to mount an RCA jack on the lower rear panel. Look for a clear spot near the Key jack and drill a hole as close to the top of the panel as possible while still allowing the jack to not project above the top of the panel. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/20/2019 8:15 AM, Wolfgang Peringer wrote: Hello: I have built and installed the K60XV 60m and transverter adapter in my K2. [Elecraft] K3 SWR Question3
Hello, My K3 is exhibiting some SWR meter behavior I don’t quite understand. To eliminate any possible effects of antennas or cabling, I hooked a Palstar DL2K dummy load directly to the K3 antenna connector. All bands except 40 meters seem fine, with SWR reading as you would expect with a dummy load. The anomaly I am seeing is that SWR as shown on the K3 meter looks fine at 7.01 MHz (approx. 1.2:1), but as I go up in frequency, the SWR as shown on the K3 meter rises. When I transmit into the dummy load on 7.298 MHz, the K3 meter reads almost 3:1. I can switch in the K3 internal tuner and bring the SWR down to 1:1. I also tried an older Cantenna dummy load with the same puzzling results. Any ideas as to what may be causing this 40 meter only problem? I first noticed this problem during NAQP SSB when using my Steppir, which of course retunes itself as I change frequency. When going from the low part of the phone band to the high part on 40 meters, I noticed SWR increasing on the K3 meter, even though it was not increasing and stayed at 1.2:1 on my inline LP-100A. The K3 also started to fold back power. That prompted me to do the further testing with the dummy load as I discussed above. --Ed— Sent from Mail for Windows 10 --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K2 VCO Alignment T5 L30
Tom, Good work on the VFO. Before you replace U11, measure the resistance from the wire on the carrier board to the lead of the SMD IC. Do that for all pins. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU BYP light always on
I initially sent this to just Pete, but found other posts: The intent is that the ATU IN LED be illuminated when the ATU is switched in with the ATU MODE button, and the ATU BYP LED is illuminated when the ATU MODE is BYPASS and also when the current ATU setting, with ATU IN, is “bypassed”. Each ATU full search tune checks the bypassed setting first, and if the SWR with the ATU bypassed is good enough, then “bypassed” is stored as the preferred ATU setting for that frequency. “Good enough” defaults to 1.2 to 1, but you can change that with an SWR bypass threshold menu item. For example, my 20 meter beam is resonant low in the band. Down there both ATU LEDs are lit. Up the band only the IN LED is lit. I don’t have to remember to turn the ATU off at the low end, it remembers the bypassed setting. Early firmware lit one LED or the other, indicating ATU MODE. Field tester feedback suggested lighting both LEDs when the ATU function was switched in and the current ATU setting is bypassed. 73 de Dick, K6KR > On Jan 19, 2019, at 06:46, N4ZR wrote: > > Just got my KPA-1500, and it seems to work great except that the ATU BYP > light is always illuminated. [Elecraft] New K2 build
I have taken advantage of Elecraft’s National Hobby Month offer and now have a K2 plus KSB2 SSB Option, KNB2 Noise Blanker, KAT2 20W Internal ATU to build. My query is: do I build first the K2 transceiver as CW only, then add in the options as completed? From reading the manuals, components have to be removed from the completed K2 before the addition of some options. It seems a shame to undo work. Old blogs mention a Rework Eliminator kit which would have been a solution to my dilemma, but these are long since discontinued. So, do I build first and add options later? I'd be pleased to hear from other K2 builders. I must add a huge kudos to both Elecraft and UPS - California to Scotland - 46 hours from ordering to delivery! What service! Thank you. Re: [Elecraft] New K2 build
Hi Bruce, You're gonna' love building this kit! I just finished my 3rd one, plus the 100 W amp and tuner, and I have been having a lot of fun with it the last week or so. Yes, you want to build the basic cw kit first, then add options but if you read the SSB kit's manual (and the others), it shows you where you can add a few components during the initial build, so a ton of rework isn't necessary when you want to add SSB. The rework eliminators were a nice addition, but not necessary. I used them on the first one, but not this time. I've finally finished and installed all of the K2's options, and there was no complicated rework for any of them - that was my experience, anyway. There is great support on this list, and at least in my experience, nobody will criticize you for dumb questions - at least in public ;) Enjoy, and don't be shy about asking for help. 73, Jim KO5V Edgewood, NM "I have taken advantage of Elecraft’s National Hobby Month offer and now have a K2 plus KSB2 SSB Option, KNB2 Noise Blanker, KAT2 20W Internal ATU to build. Re: [Elecraft] New K2 build
Bruce, Yes, build the K2 first - there is a point where the manual tells you that you can add such things as the Front Panel components for the KSB2, and headers for other options. Do NOT attempt to add parts of the K60XV option until you have finished building and testing the basic K2. There are not really many parts to remove - C167 for the KSB2 plus 2 jumpers (which can be cut if you prefer. For the K160RX only a jumper removal and the addition of 3 capacitors. For the KNB2, one jumper and remove 3 resistors. The KAF2 requires only 2 jumpers to be removed (those cannot be cut), and the K60XV requires only the removal and replacement of one capacitor. You must have done something to expedite that order - UPS Ground delivery here in the US is usually 5 to 7 days unless it is to the same state or one adjacent where the delivery is next day to 3 days. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/20/2019 1:32 PM, Bruce McCartney via Elecraft wrote: I have taken advantage of Elecraft’s National Hobby Month offer and now have a K2 plus KSB2 SSB Option, KNB2 Noise Blanker, KAT2 20W Internal ATU to build. [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 - for sale
This is a repeat post. The original may have set the price too high, so I have reduced it a couple of hundred. If this doesn’t work I’ll keep it as a standby. Here ‘tis, on the same terms as the original – namely no Pay Pal, shipment on receipt of payment, I will do packing and buyer pays shipping. CONUS only, and for sale to hams only. Located in Denver in case anyone wants to come see them. KPA500 Amp (kit built s/n 0651), and KAT500 Antenna Tuner (kit built s/n 0452), with connecting cables and cables for connection to K3. Cosmetically and electrically excellent, always kept covered, no smoking environment ever, never used outdoors. $1,950 for the pair. I might sell the tuner separately, but I cannot sell the amp separately. Due to a planned downsizing of my principal residence I also have 3 K2 systems and some other stuff which I will post separately, after I confirm all of the various options in each of the K2s. The plan is to keep the K3/KPA1500 at my second QTH, where the antennas and the wildlife are, and to run them remotely from a high-rise apartment in the city. At a club meeting the other night I asked a fellow who has been doing remote operations how he would feel about running a 1500 watt amp in a remote forest from 100 miles away. He said, “Install sprinklers.” There will be a learning curve for me to tackle a remote setup. Expect to see pleas for help later this year. Ted, KN1CBR Edward A. Dauer, LL.B. M.P.H. [Elecraft] KPA1500 loose 3K Ohm/3 watt resistor
Hi All Went to move the amp today and heard something loose in the PA deck on the KPA1500. I removed the bottom cover to find a 3 K Ohm, 3 watt resistor laying loose to the side of the PA board. There is indication that the resistor has been heated. Checking the resistor with my Fluke 77 shows it is still within tolerance. Any ideas where this goes on the board? (PA/Filter/other)? I've looked at the boards and cannot see where it came off. I also looked at the pictures Elecraft submitted to the FCC and they do not show it. Here's a link of a picture of the resistor. https://photos.app.goo.gl/u5tcd2kQa2GJaLd19 Hoping someone can answer this in case Elecraft is off tomorrow for MLK Jr. Holiday. 73 Dave wo2x __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Hi Andy The amp appears to be working properly. The leads of the resistor look like they are bent at the end as if it was soldered to surface of the board and not through hole. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report
Good Evening, Both bands were crystal clear and quiet. But neither were very productive. The inclement weather of the Midwest may be part of it. Even Central California was getting its share. Thunderstorms and a tornado. Things are quieter here but it has been steadily raining for the last ?? days. It becomes normal after a while so I use it to my advantage. Get ready for the rainy season then spend it affixed to a keyboard. Ken had the coolest temperature on both bands. He mentioned more snow is coming but it is January and he lives in North Dakota; there is no mystery involved. Dave told me of white out conditions but only a few inches of snow from it. Roy also had snow, enough to get his snowblower active. However, when Mike mentioned ice on his antennas I shivered. Snow is fine. Rain is OK. Ice is bad. But I think hearing about a tornado in Central California was the most surprising. On 14049.5 kHz at 2200z: W0CZ - Ken - ND 4 degrees and sunny K6XK - Roy - IA 6 degrees K4TO - Dave - KY 16 degrees and sunny On 7047 kHz at z: W0CZ - Ken - ND 0 degrees K4TO - Dave - KY K6PJV - Dale - CA Thunderstorms and a Tornado K0DTJ - Brian - CA 53 degrees and breezy AB9V - Mike - IN 10 degrees ice then 4" snow Until next week, stay well and stay warm, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] K3 SWR Question3
Hi Ed I recall having had a similar experience with my K3 some years ago, although it wasn't on 40m. I think it was either 10 or 12m and related to an antenna connected to the ANT 1 socket. Eventually I tracked it down to having previously had an antenna connected to the ANT 2 socket and having used the ATU in the K3 to tune it at that time although I think that there was no antenna on ANT 2 when the problem cropped up. I believe that the feed through between ANT 1 and 2 sockets was sufficient to give a false SWR reading on the K3. It might be worth investigating this and possibly swapping over your antenna/dummy load to the ANT 2 socket to see what happens. I think I eventually just retuned the ATU on ANT 2 with a dummy load in place and the problem went away. Good luck. Thank you.
