[Elecraft] KX3 clock problem
Howdy Fellow Elecrafters" Just received a previously owned KX3 s/n 6027 and am unable to set the realtime clock. The clock display is stuck on "45.85.85" and I can't reset the digits. I have another older KX3 and the clock sets easily with no problems. Anyone out there have any idea what is going on with the clock in s/n 6027? Any assistance/info most welcome. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Is there a K4 on the horizon?
I tend to agree with Joe's comments. The K1 was a much different rig than the KX1 and the K2. These were distinctly different rigs..one didn't morph into the other , etc. A full size K4 (whatever size that may be) might be of great appeal to the Amateur that wants a larger and perhaps easier to use radio, larger buttons, no "push" or "hold" functions, spectrum display, etc. I love my K3 and KX3 but I would welcome a K4it's gonna happen sometime...the K3 will be getting a little long in the tooth in a few years (or sooner). [Elecraft] Importance of good coaxial jumpers
Howdy Gang: I find my KX3 to be my "go to" QRP rig these daysmy K3 is getting dusty (grin). I was on 15M CW the other day and noticed birdies every 1Khz across the band. I didn't think this was right so I dug deeper. After eliminating the antenna coax switch and connecting the antenna directly to my KX3 lo and behold...no birdies. Hmmmwhat's going on here. I replaced the coax jumper cable (RG58) from my KX3 to my coax antenna switch with a new one and the birdies disappeared!! I checked the cable (PL259's on each end) and found that the braid was not solderedevidently the only thing making connection from the braid to the reducer was a friction fit. The copper braid looked kinda sparse so I replaced with a know new good jumper cable and the problem was solved. Now I'm gonna check all the coax jumper cables I have in the shack and make sure they all have properly installed coax connectors on them. Lesson learnednow back to 15M!! 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Ever had a WOW moment?
Howdy Gang: As the subject says, have you ever had a WOW moment using QRP on the bands?? I just did as I answered a very weak response to my CQ on 21.060 at 1613Z. G3YPZ called and I couldn't really couldn't copy much until I got him zero beat and turned on the APF in my KX3. Finally got his call and then copied just about 100% of his transmissions from then on. Turns out that John was running a K3 at 100mw!! Of course the fact that he had a 2 element quad certainly helped but I can't recall ever working a DX station when he was running so little power. Solar Flux today is only at 123 so condx not great but 15m can be magical at times. This QRP stuff is amazing...we can be thankful to Wayne and Eric for such superb equipment that allow us to work farther with less these days. I harken back to my beginning days as a Novice with a homebrew 6V6 and S77 Hallicrafters receiver...amazing that I made any QSOs back then in 1962!! 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Desk microphones for the K3
Howdy Gang: I needed a HI Z mike for my TR7 and decided on the MC50just rewired the plug to be compatible with the TR7 and it works FB. I also got an MC60A mike for my K3...got an 8 to 4 pin mike adaptor, which I had to re-wire, and set bias to OFF on the FP)...the K3 likes it and I get good audio reports. OK...so why not go one further...I got an MC50 for my Drake T4XC and it works great. No RFI or any other issues with any of the rigs...maybe I'm just lucky. The MC50 andMC60A can be switch from LO to HI Z which makes them extremely versatile in terms of old and new rigs they will work with. I do really like the ability to remove the mike from its holder and use it like a hand mike. Funny, I'm 100% CW and QRP except for one weekly sked on SSB with a retired buddyplus I love to keep the older classic rigs on the air...perhaps since I grew up with them (grin). Re: [Elecraft] K1-4 4band version gone?
Howdy Fellow Elecrafters: OK...it's so obvious even I figured it out. Notice that we have a KX1 and a KX3?? What happened to the KX2?? Well, read on. I predict the next new transceiver from Elecraft will render obsolete the K1-4 and KX1 obsolete...it will be called, obviously, the KX2. It will be a CW only all band 160M-6M DDS VFO controlled Direct Conversion SDR ala the KX3 but much smaller. Perfect for field use it will become the new rage of the SOTA and IOTA crowd as well as the QRP community in general that likes to take their rigs out for portable OPS. (Always check your parts before beginning - which I did not) I had to putt about 10 resistors of the board. They are plated through holes. I did not have a vacuum desoldering station...so I have to think of somethingto get the solder out of the holes. A small drill? Anyone has some comments? Lee Buller - K0WA "Embarrased to say the least" Howdy Lee: If you don't have good solder wick then try using a stainless steel sewing needle. I've used a sewing needle many times and it works great...heat the pad and stick the needle down thru the hole while the solder is melting. The needle will push the solder out the other side where you can clip off the excess and clean the remainder up with solder wickthe needle, being stainless steel, won't adhere to the solder so it will just pull right back out of the hole. Best of luck in getting your board cleaned up. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Mojo
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool CW Op and have been trying to work K5D for the past week on QRP CW to no availwith a CF Zepp up only 20 feet I am not surprised (grin). After looking around the bands for them I heard them on 18.165 SSB of all things listening on 18.155 and I worked them on the 3rd call with my K3 at 5W on SSB..go figure!!! I can't remember the last time I operated SSB with my K3 but it has been a while so I guess you just can't keep the Elecraft/K3 Mojo down. I operated portable QRP this past weekend from a local park with my K2 at 4W and a 100 foot wire antenna up in the trees and worked a bunch of DX stations...Hawaii being my best DX so the Elecraft Mojo is still jumping in my K2. And the Elecraft hits just keep on coming!! 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] PAR End Fed Half Wave antenna
I've been using two PAR EFHW (End Fed Half Wave) antennas in portable ops for several weeks now with excellent results. I have the 20/40M and the 10/20/40M antennas that I use at the local park. What I like about these antennas, besides the fact that they work very well indeed, is that no transmission or support rope is required. I get one end up in the air using the monofilament line on my wrist rocket and tape the match box end to my operating tablea short coax jumper cable to my K2 or KX1 completes the installation. Using the monofilament on the wrist rocket to support one end of the antenna obviates the need for a support rope of some kind so this along with the transmission line is eliminated. These end fed half waves appear to be ideal for backpacking ops since they eliminate a lot of weight and bulk. I also have played with an 88ft center fed doublet fed with 450 ohm ladder line and this has also been an excellent portable antenna, although it requires a transmission line and antenna tuner and at least one support rope in the center and two shorter lines for the ends. What is really neat about the PAR EFHW's is that once pruned and tuned no antenna tuner is required so even more weight and bulk is eliminated for the portable operator. The PAR 10/20/40M job provides 3 bands of operation with no tuner, transmission line or support rope...not too shabby. We are supposed to warm up considerably hear in southeastern North Carolina over the weekendsupposed to be in the 70's so I'll be in the park on Saturday and perhaps on Sunday playing with these antennas...hope to meet you on the air this weekend (CW of course!!!--grin) 73, Joe W2KJ (near Wilmington, NC) I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
