Re: Does anyone system test PCs anymore? - Q on new procedures
Is FCC+FCC= FCC , that is line the old CE+CE = CE line? AFAIK, if the set up passed, it 'may' not be tested again. And 'may' is rather meaningless. Shall is the right words. In the past, there is always a phrase This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subjected to blah, blah device may not cause harmful interference ... shall will carries a penalty enfororceble by law. RE: opinions, please
This is sort of off topic -- but it's on topic too. Some years ago, at a now defunct computer manufacturer, customer complaints of memory incompatibility lead us to purchase test equipment specifically designed to evaluate memory cards. What we found was that, although different vendors cards used the same chips, due to layout problems many of them were incapable of achieving their rated speeds. This should of course have been no surprise. However, it cost us money! It's reasonable to think that a memory which is on already on the edge of returning faults will be more susceptible -- and make the product more susceptible -- to ESD and EFT induced problems. Depending on corporate priorities, one might aim for a a robust product design to work with anything a customer might stuff in it -- or specify WHICH manufacturers memories will be covered by the device warranty. That's cheaper up front, and the way things are done. I will note that the marketing rationale for placing a CE mark on components which may be installed by the public could well extend even to resistors. I await the CE-marked, LVD and EMCD tested, zero volt, zero ohm chip resistor. Brussels is the necessity of invention. Ad astra per aspirin. Cortland Doug Massey posted I still think that a sound, defensible engineering rationale can be made to support the case that a memory stick does little to affect the immunity characteristics of a desktop PC. I reluctantly agree that it could POSSIBLY (not likely) affect the unintentional emissions of a desktop PC. I strongly agree that there are marketing and customer confidence advantages to placing the CE Mark on such a device, even if the requirements are somewhat unclear, and may have some 'wiggle room' there. I totally agree that the most conservative course here is to apply the EMCD in full. (did I encompass everybody's posts here?). And as always, if in doubt, TEST!! Security and Alarm Systems
Hello All, I am intersted to know about European Directives for Alarm and similar security systems used in commercial (airports, businesses) and household applications. What are the Directives (RTTE, Construction, etc.) involved, the standards and some of the Recognized Test Agencies for a wi-fi type alarm system. These are some of the standards that may or may not be applicable: 1. CEI 79-16 Level B 2. CEI79-2 Level 1 3. EN3220-3 4. EN301489-1 5. EN301-3 6. EN60950 7. EN50130-4 8. Charles Grasso wrote Can a monitor purchased from an OEM have a company label slapped on it and sold WITHOUT the company testing it in a system? Looks like it! One of my EMI horror stories concerns a monitor I found could make a computer NEXT to it, not even turned on, exceed the Part 15 conducted emission limit. It had an FCC ID, too. Good thing we tested. Nowadays, though, if it comes with a DoC, you need not test it. Oversimplifying only a little, it looks like one can now market a computer system without testing ANY of its components as long as the parts of it were once tested, somewhere, at labs the FCC could believe. I see a national computer chain is selling computers with plastic covers so you can see what you paid for. Hear it, too, no doubt. Machinery Directive acoustic requirements
Good day to all. In reviewing the list of harmonized standards called up to support a DoC to the Machinery Directive, several acoustic standards are mentioned. Many of these standards appear to address test methods. Going only by the titles of these standards, some test methods (for instance, where a reverberant room is used) seem to overlap one another. Short of purchasing the plethora of standards identified for acoustic compliance, is there a way to determine which standard will best suit a fixed set of test equipment and facilities, without hiring a consultant? If the product is effectively complete unto itself (meaning, it can function as intended), but is designed to and will only be used inside the enclosure of another piece of equipment (the application in use is a certainty), but the specific equipment incorporated into can not be completely specified, is acoustic testing necessary, other than to provide guidance to the final equipment assembler? RE:More CE mark issues
In my experience of UK MOD contracts, there is always a clause which states that equipment supplied must meet all relevent commercial requirements in addition to the specific military std. This always made the EU CE marking a requirement of the contract. If you are working as a sub contractor you would not always get sight of the actual contract, and in many cases I dealt with, the prime contractor did not pick up on that particular clause either. Another point to note (I may of missed this one in a previous posting), only a few of the EU countries exempted military equipment from the scope of the EMC directive (UK and Italy are the two I specifically recall) Russ Beattie _ Do you Yahoo!? Re: Immunity testing mitigations
On 12 Nov 2003, Tom wrote If you are so sure that your product complies with the protection requirements of the EMC Directive even if it failed to pass the test, you have chance to use TCF Route instead of the Standard Route. Regards, Tom Tom, could you explain your thinking on this a little more? I feel that too often TCFs are written just to get around test failures or to bypass testing even when standards apply. Some test houses are even implying in their advertising that they can get around the testing by writing a TCF.
