RE: Thermal Testing
I use the Hewlett Packard 3490A Data Acquisition / Switch Unit in conjunction with a PC for monitoring and control. Not only could you monitor thermo activities but I believe you could also set it to measure voltages. -Original Message- From: Chris Chileshe [mailto:chris.chile...@ultronics.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 07, 2002 6:37 AM To: emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org Subject: RE: Thermal Testing I have found the Pico data logger (with type K thermocouples) ideal for my requirements. Re:RE: Re[2]: Thermal Testing
Group, I believe this is what we paid for our Agilent datalogger: 34970A Data aquisition/switch unit with Benchlink software £949 ($1518) 34901A 20 Channel mux module£290 ($465) so a complete 60 channel thermocouple thermometer costs £1819 ($2910)! Yes it does sound too good to be true but we have one and it is an excellent piece of kit. As for whether there is anything negative to say, I can think of only one thing. The connections are quite annoying (small screw terminals in the module not plug in thermocouple connectors) .Then again you can imagine how big the equipment would have to be to accomodate 60 thermocouple sockets, even the miniature type. Best thing is to get one on demo from Agilent. This is what we did and we were very impressed. Other manufacturers equipment we had in on demo did not come anywhere near the price or number of channels on the Agilent. Regards, Duncan. RE: Thermal Testing
To all I will add a little to what previous emc-pstc denizens have said about the 34970A. I use this unit extensively for production, HALT and safety testing. This unit can be ordered (recommended) with the DMM option. This will make the unit similar to the 34401 DMM, my favorite 6.5 digit meter. It is good-to-go out of the box w/supplied software. I would attempt to avoid using the serial port; you will eventually want to control several instruments, and GPIB is currently the only practical/robust solution for this...(at least until something like USB/1394 is on everything). I have used many ISA/PCI bus-based data acquisition boards, and have had more than one problem with these solutions; and always return to discrete instruments. I also prefer to use instruments that have embedded SCPI. Also, calibration of I/O cards can be problematic. I am not certain that you can demonstrate tracibility of these cards from one computing platform to another; and all of the agencies I deal with accept data from the 34970, but some tend to doubt data from these I/O cards. Avoid writing a lot of user interface code. It will only detract from the primary purpose of evaluating the UUT and test documentation. If using a Win-tel box, consider using COM/ActiveX to glue and stream data between the device driver and Word/Access/Excel/Etc. Let other people do the Grunt coding, you are doing compliance engineering. Most data acquisition tasks are already built into MS Office or Lotus SmartSuite. -Original Message- From: richwo...@tycoint.com [mailto:richwo...@tycoint.com] Sent: Monday, May 06, 2002 11:14 AM To: emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org Subject: Thermal Testing Do any of you monitor and record component temperatures during safety testing using PCs and data capture I/O cards? Hi, We have 6 of the systems. We use them not only for temperature measurement, but data logging for fixtures we build. The only complaint is that you can not control more that one unit using the BenchLink software. You can use the HP-IP bus to control more than one, but then you need to write software. We have also had a problem with data dropping (1 or 2 readings out of a scan), but only at high speed and to a notebook PC. We assumed it was a function of the RS-232 bus. It probably gets better, you just don't know it yet. Many of these systems, we use a Fluke unit, can also perform other functions, E, I and strain gauges with the same basic chassis. You just add other modules if you want. Most will have a network connection so that you can monitor remotely etc. Gary -Original Message- From: richwo...@tycoint.com [mailto:richwo...@tycoint.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 07, 2002 9:39 AM To: emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org Subject: RE: Re[2]: Thermal Testing This almost appears to be too good to be true. Richard, all, I prefer the HP (now Agilent?) datalogger series over Fluke's. More channels, (my model has 3 bays of 22 channels each), included software allows for any normal type of thermocouple, as well as voltage or resistance measurements. Connects to PC with serial cable, uses minimal resources (our dedicated PC is a 486, 33MHz, with Win 3.1, and it runs fine (set up this way years ago, and I haven't needed to upgrade it.) I do any monitoring any temp testing with a Fluke Hydra II and associated PC software. Set up and define probes, start software, dump into an Excel spreadsheet or report. Communication between the Fluke and the PC is done through serial ports. - Doug McKean --- This message is from the IEEE EMC Society Product Safety Technical Committee emc-pstc discussion list.
