Ok, so that shows you still have version 0.8.13 of the
hostmot2-firmware-7i43-2 installed, as per the prophecy.

Upgrade it to 0.8.21 and see how you do.

sudo apt-get -uV upgrade hostmot2-firmware-7i43-2

[Emc-users] Backlash - what are ok numbers?

2015-04-06 Thread John Alexander Stewart
Hi all;

Finally fixed the Oldham couplers for my X/Y axes on my latest build, and
was measuring backlash for inserting in the LinuxCNC ini file.

This is for a G0704 style of mill conversion, using one of those kits
from the old KeilingCNC place.

X/Y/Z is 0.1mm, 0.24mm 0.1mm or, 2.5 thou, 9 thou, 2.5 thou.

Is this considered ok or out of range?

I've put these figures in my mill ini file, and it's currently running the
X and Y axes back and forth; will measure it again after a bit of wearing
in.

Any thoughts/comments?

(as an aside, Andy Pugh's feedback for spindle soft-gearing works a treat -
thank you again Andy)

John.

Re: [Emc-users] PNCConf setup

2015-04-06 Thread Rick Lair
On the topic of the 7i80, I am actually doing two machines at once, both
nearly identical, the second is about 10 miles down the road though, for
a good friend of our shop, and I have done a carbon copy build on both
machines. My question is, if the guy at the other shop doesn't have a
wireless access point in his shop, is there any way to use the 7i80
along side his LAN ? Or do I need to just do a fresh pull before getting
rolling on the programming of the control, and not worry about having a
network connection after I get the 7i80 connected and operating?

Re: [Emc-users] PNCConf setup

2015-04-06 Thread Rick
Not yet, I couldn't remember where I left off, three months ago now,
with programming and setup, so I yanked the hard drive, brought in the
office, gave it the DBAN treatment, and started over this morning. I am
trying to get my HAL and INI files roughed out before I get real
involved at the machine itself.

It's just a matter of throwing the hard drive back in and turning the
power on, all of the wiring and such is done on the machine, now just
programming.

Re: [Emc-users] Backlash - what are ok numbers?

2015-04-06 Thread Rick Lair
  I personally wouldn't think 0.0025 isn't horrible, but the .009 is a
little high, but depending on the machine size, it might really not
matter. On our machines, that would be problematic, due to the
crosslides weighing 3000-4000 lbs, (on the light side depending on the
machine, 10,000 on one of ours) so trying to keep track of all that mass
with almost 10 thou worth of lash would make it awful rough on the ball
screw and servo.

Ok, so that shows you still have version 0.8.13 of the

Upgrade it to 0.8.21 and see how you do.

I would get one machine running first and it would be a machine with
network access. I tried to get the 7i80 working with only one network
card and it gave lot of trouble. I then installed a second network
connection and made it exclusive to Hostmot2. Then things started
working.
You must also make sure that you have the very latest firmware in the

I have not tried to do anything with the IP address yet.

The IP address and network connection must be correct or nothing will happen

The 7I80 has 3 possible IP addresses

1. 192.168.1.121 (W1 and W2 down)
2. from EEPROM (W1 down W2 up)
3. from bootps (W1 up W2 down)

Default is the 192.168.1.121 address. This allows access to the card
regardless of EEPROM settings.

Mesaflash uses this default address if no IP address is specified on the
command line.

I would suggest that the EEPROM address be used for linuxcnc use and it be set
for 10.10.10.10

Then you setup the RT Ethernet connection with a host address of say
10.10.10.1,netmask 255.255.255.0 and manual (no auto/dhcp)

Be back at it in the morning, but will be checking email this evening,

 Thanks

On the topic of the 7i80, I am actually doing two machines at once, both
nearly identical, the second is about 10 miles down the road though, for
a good friend of our shop, and I have done a carbon copy build on both
machines. My question is, if the guy at the other shop doesn't have a
wireless access point in his shop, is there any way to use the 7i80
along side his LAN ? Or do I need to just do a fresh pull before getting
rolling on the programming of the control, and not worry about having a
network connection after I get the 7i80 connected and operating?

Its a pain to deal with network issues unless you have 2 LAN connections.

If you dont have wireless, one option is to install a LAN card for the real
time interface (a Realtek 8139 card works well). Another option is to use a
USB-- Ethernet adapter for the non-realtime (internet) connection

 X/Y/Z is 0.1mm, 0.24mm 0.1mm or, 2.5 thou, 9 thou, 2.5 thou.
The 2.5 thou is a bit loose, bigger balls in the nut perhaps?

The 9 thou Y indicates either the thrust bearing at the solidly anchored

I've been dealing with a loose Y axis on my cinci contourmaster; this

position. The so-called lock on the servo end was loose and so the backlash
was self-adjusting;out to unusable amounts. Ugh. I'm in the process of
a dual fix ... complete rebuild the mount for the ballscrew so I can
lock it down tight and add a 10 5 um glass scale for reference.
For now I will connect just the glass scale with it's attendant tuning
problems (just not quite enough counts) but the future holds a config
where P and D are fed from a 40K count/in encoderon the ballscrew and I
is driven by the glass scale in like manner to Stu's big machine.

Some years ago I was asked to fab a bunch of blocks for a US First
robotics team. Set them up and ran as a batch.
When finished I miked them to see how I'd done. SD was 0.001 but the
dimensions were all large by about 2 thou. This on a machine (mazak)
with 0.0025 backlash on both X and Y. Appropriate cutter comp might have
landed these in the right range if it made a difference. ;-) Just
personal experience.

[Emc-users] Hostmot drivers

2015-04-06 Thread Eric H. Johnson
Hi all,

I am running into a problem with installing the hostmot drivers that I do
not recall encountering before. I installed the 7i43-small packages, then
just tried to run the hm2_servo | 7i43-small sample configuration, telling
it to make a local copy. It tells me it cannot find SVST4_4S.BIN. There is
no SVST4_4S.BIN under /lib/firmware., only SVST4_4.BIN. I made a local copy
of SVST4_4.BIN in /linuxcnc/configs/hm2-servo, and changed the ini file to
reference SVST4_4.BIN. Still says it cannot find the file, and is looking in
path hm2/7i43/SVST4_4.BIN. I am not sure what that is referenced to, but
recreated the path under linuxcnc/config and several other places.

I am running lcnc 2.5.4.

What stupid thing am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Eric

Sebastian,

Is SVST4_4S.BIT different from SVST4_4.BIT. I assumed the 'S' meant that it
was for the small (200K) FPGA. SVST4_4.BIT was the only one that installed
with the 7i43-small package.

If I drop the hm2/7i43/ from the path in the ini file, it still does not
find the BIT file, at least any place I have tried to put it under linuxcnc
or linuxcnc/config. If I add an explicit path in the ini file ( /home/...),
it says file name exceeds 30 characters.

There are two SVST4_4 bit files, one for the 400k FPGA (big, aka B)
and one for the 200k FPGA (small, aka S).

The problem you describe is a bug in the hostmot2 firmware package,
which i think is now fixed. It was due to a change in how/where the
firmware debs package the files. It's better now, but old versions of
linuxcnc don't know about the new better paths. The problem is fixed in
the latest version of the hostmot2 debs by adding back the symlinks to
the old firmware locations that i erroneously removed.

Try 0.8.21 from the hm2 buildbot:

deb http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/hm2 hm2-firmware v0

If that works for you then i'll update the debs at www.linuxcnc.org.

Yeah, firmware path lengths are quite restricted by the linux kernel.
When i was originally implementing kernel firmware loading in our
hostmot2 driver i asked the kernel folks to relax the path length limit
so that we could have our firmwares in our home directories, but they
(probably correctly) refused and told us to install them in
/lib/firmware like everyone else. Which is what we do now.

 Subject: [Emc-users] PNCConf setup

 Hello Guys,

What would be the closest configuration to try to build with from the
PNCConf utility, I am using the 7i80HD-16 card. I know that the card is
not an option yet in the utility, and just want to try to get my files
roughed out with that, instead of trying to hand write my HAL file from
 scratch.

ISTR that you have a 5i23 config with a resolver, that should be a close
starting point

because the symlink is there on my machine:

  ls -l /lib/firmware/hm2/7i43/SVST4_4S.BIT

/lib/firmware/hm2/7i43/SVST4_4S.BIT - ../7i43-2/SVST4_4.BIT

  dpkg -S /lib/firmware/hm2/7i43/SVST4_4S.BIT
hostmot2-firmware-7i43-2: /lib/firmware/hm2/7i43/SVST4_4S.BIT

  dpkg -s hostmot2-firmware-7i43-2 | grep Vers
Version: 0.8.21.g5be856c

What is the complete output of dpkg -l hostmot2\*?

Re: [Emc-users] PNCConf setup

2015-04-06 Thread Rick
I do have a few, 3 to be exact, running almost a carbon copy build
(5i23-7i49-7i44-7i71-7i70-7i73), of what I am building now,
(7i80-7i49-7i52-7i71-7i70-7i73).

Would a line that looked like this before,

 net spindle-low-range-sol =
hm2_5i23.0.7i71.0.3.output-00

Look like this with the 7i80?

 net spindle-low-range-sol =
hm2_7i80.0.7i71.0.3.output-00
