Goldenfir SSDs test out to be as good as Micron's mid-range models, because
they use the same controller chip and memory chips as Micron's mid range, but
cost much less. Unlike how many companies publish absolute best case
performance for their storage, this guy's benchmarks are well above Goldenfir's
published performance specs.

I sent my 5i25 and 7i76 into Mesa to look at. Mesa boards may be more expensive
than stuff from China, but you won’t get help from China like you do from

 Peter,

I have a separate 24V 2.5amp DIN rail power supply that powers fieldIO and
a small pcb power supply (7805 plus a couple caps) that comes off of it to
supply 5v power. I had the jumper in the wrong position for separate
powers for field IO and separate 5v power. I changed that jumper. I was
getting both oranges LEDs lit before and after the change, but could that
 have caused a problem?

I checked all the other jumpers on both boards and everything is now
correct. I have a short DB25M to DB25F ribbon cable to bring the 7i76 out
to the back of the cabinet. I disconnected it and connected the 6ft 25pin
DB25m to DB25m cable direct from the 5i25 to the 7i76 but no change in
 behavior.

I noticed that in pncconf there are no tabs for TB2 or TB3. Also on TB4
there are no lines for SPINDLE-ENA or SPINDLE-DIR. Is that normal?

[Emc-users] Axis limit warning

2018-08-24 Thread Les Newell
I have another issue that I think others have seen as well. Quite often
when I run a program on my router I get a warning that the Z axis
maximum limit will be exceeded. The code runs fine if I ignore the
warning. The warning appears to be triggered by G53 G0Z0 at the end of
the code. My maximum limit is Z1, minimum something like -200.

Does anyone have any ideas of what is going on? As a workaround is there
any way to tell Axis to never show this warning?

Les

[Emc-users] G43 weirdness

2018-08-24 Thread Les Newell
I'm in the process of rebuilding a large router which has an 8 station
ATC. I have overridden M6 to do the positioning and sequencing. This all
works fine. At the end of my toolchange subroutine I have G43H#5400 to
automatically apply the offsets for that tool.

Now for the odd bit. If I do a tool change after starting LinuxCNC the
offsets do not get applied. I can change tools as many times as I like
and the offsets stay at 0. If I run a program that contains a G43 or
manually enter G43Hxx in MDI everything starts working. I can see the
offsets change automatically as I change tool. It continues to work as
expected until I restart LinuxCNC.

I'm running a fairly recent Buildbot build. Has anyone else seen similar
behavior?

I might point out that SSD's pricing are getting very competitive. I've
been running 2 of my machines on 60GB SSD's, which are about 3 to 4x
faster than spinning rust. Now 120GB's are under 50 bucks. And they are

running in the Dell that runs my G0704. Smartctl says no re-allocated
sectors yet, pretty good for what is now a $30 drive from newegg.

And running the G0704, I'm using only 29% of its 64GB, so I've buckets of
room to play in yet.

I have 2 on the r-pi, a 64GB and 120+ GB, using them for kernel building
workspaces. I might have $70 in them.

Re: [Emc-users] update version on working machine

2018-08-24 Thread Dave Cole

THIS is the safest

way to upgrade a running system: Make multiple partitions.

No, that's definitely not the safest way. Jon's right. Swap hard drives.
You can't screw up something that's not plugged in!

If you don't want to do that, then at least image the drive to another device,
like a USB drive, then unplug the drive and put it in a safe place.

Been there, done that.

Dave

Then it is easy to copy from the old system, you boot the new one and mount
the old system read-only and copy from it.

My paranoid gene tells me to ask.

Your paranoia is GOOD! I would not update the system. If
you want to check out the newer version,
at the VERY LEAST, just swap out the hard drive, and install
a completely new system from the ISO.
If the computer is pretty old, it might be time to update
the hardware as well.
You can copy over your config file set and machining
programs from backups, or using whatever removable media you
have available. Most likely, you will have to make some
small adjustments to your configs files to make them work on
the latest LinuxCNC version. The release notes usually
describe what needs to be done accurately.

This is the safest way to do things.

Jon
