But, as I used Linux more and more at home (Slackware mostly, now running Slackware 10.0 on most machines), I generally stuck with KDE. Recently, however, I've been meaning to go back to Enlightenment (especially anticipating what looks like a fantastic product in DR17). First and foremost, how will this affect certain applications that were built specifically with KDE in mind (K3B, for example)? I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to the various libraries in Linux, but is there anything special I'll need to do to accomodate WM-specific applications? Second, what solutions exist for VNC-style access to the local console display on Enlightenment? In KDE, I use krfb, which allows me to VNC to my local display instead of a new virtual display. Can something similar be accomplished in Enlightenment? My ideal functionality would be something akin to the single-user Terminal Server in WinXP Pro, in that I can connect to the display remotely _and_ it gets locked locally (currently, with krfb, prying eyes can sit in front of my console and watch everything I do, if they were so inclined). Finally, can anyone point me to some specific resources for configuring/tweaking/getting the most out of Enlightenment? Tips and tricks, that sort of thing. I'm finding a lot via Google, but if anyone has any specific suggestions I'd love to hear them. I'm especially interested in useful applications and add-ons, such as Engage. [e-users] Eterm-0.9.3 and US International Keyboard
Hello! I decided to upgrade from Eterm-0.9.2 to Eterm-0.9.3 but found out that I couldn't get a simple ~ to show up. But it the new Eterm, it seems that it's not working. I upgraded to the latest libast of course. [e-users] E16 and E17 can now co-exist in the same box! --provided some rpms
Hello all, I hope I won't get flamed by the developers for having done this ;-(: A lot of people have told me that they wanted both E16 and E17 in their box. And voilà! I've repackaged E16 (E-0.16.7.2) to install in /usr/local/share/enlightenment/, and also changed it's name to e16-0.16.7.2 instead of enlightenment-0.16.7.2, to avoid conflicting packages. Do a yum install e16 in the usual repository. (available for FC2 and FC3 users for the moment). Will push fror FC1packages later. In your ~/.Xclient-default: You can load E16 by placing this: --- exec /usr/local/share/enlightenment/bin/enlightenment --- and if you want to load E17, then select enlightenment in entrance. If you want to load E16, select default in entrance. I know that all this would be taken care of with 0.16.8. But for now it's one solution. If anybody has violent objections for this, let me know and try to work out something else. (DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT DON'T DO IT SINCE IT DOES INVOLVE --FORCE!) Firstly I uninstalled my E16 setup because I was getting rpm conflicts. 1. I did exactly as per Didier's site in the section Attention Mandrake Users (installing and sorting some locations of a few crypto libs) 2. I downloaded the contents of the FC2 rpm dir since I don't have apt or yum installed and I believe that path may not work under mdk anyway because of the following points. 3. Went to the dir I saved them to and just did an rpm -Uvh * and then noted what it was saying it was missing. 4. Installed all dependencies until I got it down to freetype2 and xine-lib and one other xine related one. 5. Freetype2. Mdk calls this libfreetype6 and libfreetype6-devel apparently so checked these were installed and continued. 6. With the xine rpms, similar issue. They were called lib-xine rather than xine-lib. Something like that. Checked they were installed and continued. 7. rpm -Uvh --force * since I now knew everything it thought it was missing was in fact really there. Bingo. E doesn't show up in gdm yet. I'm looking at that, but for now I have DESKTOP=enlightenment in ~/.desktop and in /etc/sysconfig/desktop and that seems to do the job. Nice work Didier. I know maybe source build would get me the latest and greatest code and maybe guarantee my build a bit better, but in the space of about 30 minutes I'm now finding my way round a new environment that looks just stunning. Now all I need to do is just that. Find my way around :) Cheers, Martin. --- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users. This is a very, very bad idea. Do not use NOT_RELEASE_1 as a release number. What is to say that release 1 is greater or less than release NOT_RELEASE_1? Use 0.something instead, like 0.%(date '+%Y%m%d') at this stage if people are installing rpm's of e17.. they deserve the pain they get.the .spec file explicitly has that in the release to fuck things up and denote e17 as something that shouldn't be released/packaged etc. beyond someone maybe doing it for themselves and the.spec file is just a handy time saver then Well yeah... as raster said/meant, I used the notation found in the spec file found in cvs. I don't know if it's good or bad. Look into the supermount patch for the linux kernel. As I understand it from the original poster (the idea sounds cool to me) is that supermount works already for them. It is just that supermount gives some signal to start the file manager (Evidence, or any other for that sake). Now first of all I don't know if supermount can give such a signal, but it sounds like an interesting idea to me. Putting in a CD-ROM or connecting a compact flash card (e.g. from your camera) generally means the user wants to browse that media. Emitting the signal is certainly supermount's task, though receiving it is the task of the desktop environment (Gnome, KDE or maybe Enlightenment). There's something like that here. http://warmcat.com/usbautocam/ But after i installed, it detected my usb sticks and confifigured my system, but unfortunately in real life situations, it didn't actually behave like it was suppose too! [...] I believe gnome/mandrake has this already (At least last time I installed a mandrake install for my friend, which was ages ago, this appeared to already happen.) You insert the cd and the CD-ROM icon is automounted on your desktop. I believe that Knoppix does much the same, if I recall correctly. I could be way off :) Brain no workie anymore. For cdrom yes, but not for usb sticks! When I use gnome on my fc2 it automounts my cdrom but not my usb stick. With kind regards, Didier. --- PhD student. Re: [e-users] Auto mounting of USB Flash disks and CDROM in E-mounterro!
For cdrom yes, but not for usb sticks! When I use gnome on my fc2 it automounts my cdrom but not my usb stick. I know Knoppix does it with USB drives, I think it has more to do with if the filesystem inserted is inside the fstab and if supermount is configured to give out a response when said filesystem is mounted. This is all me guessing, as I have absolutely no experience with supermount. - James Finally I found something that install rapidly and give you what you want! ::Mounterro:: http://www.hut.fi/~tkarvine/mounttero/ I just installed the rpm and restarted autofs and voila everything was working. I had to do a small ln -s /mnt/auto/usb /mnt/ ln -s /mnt/auto/cdrom /mnt/ so that I could get my cdrom drive and usb in mnt instead of the default location. Now in E it detects both my usb stick and cdrom perfectly and automounts them on my system. Well It doesn't pop up anything yet but we'll see how to do that later. [e-users] Automatic mounting of USB Flash disks and CDROM in E
Hi everybody, I was just wondering if anybody out ther has written some scripts for E to automatically mount USB Flash disks and cdroms. Things like making E pop up some windows of evidence or other stuff when plugging in thumb drives or cdroms. I do not really want to reinvent the wheel so if somebody has already done some work in this direction, could you please share? :-) Thanks. With kind regards, Didier. --- PhD student. Build rpm out of it and it works fine. :-) I understand that most of these stuff are not ready but we can still enjoy them. Engage is cool! Thanks for the nice work.
