Re: [e-users] Terminology crashes as soon as I try and type something

2015-06-12 Thread Will Hopper
I had qualitatively the same issue with terminology 0.8 when I upgraded
efl/elementary from 1.13.x series to 1.14 (running on Debian, but I build
everything from source using release tarballs since Debian's packages are
so old). But, luckily all I had to do was uninstall terminology and
recompile it again against the new efl libs. So, maybe theres a version
mismatch in what terminolgy got compiled with, try rebuilding terminology
against the 1.14 libs you have. Hope that helps.

Could you compile elf, elementary, terminology with the following

Re: [e-users] Libre office window does not move

2015-02-04 Thread Will Hopper
No, not totally alone, Libre Office can act funny for me too (also using
jessie).

Sometimes (usually with a second monitor connected to my laptop, but not
always) I have a problem maximizing a libre office window. The window bar
across the top resizes and moves correctly, but the actual contents of the
window never moves or resizes, and you cannot interact with the document
you are using. But, the window bar is responsive, and unmaximizing allows
you to regain full control of the document and the window. Its done this
basically forever (i.e since ~ e18 release). I just work around the issue
around by dragging the window to be the full size of the screen.

I imagine you know this, but in your case, make sure the window isn't
maximized, that will prevent the window from being dragged around.

Do a find and remove all .eo files around and re-start the build.

First you should use both or `rm -fr' what you don't need if you know what

You cannot remove gtk-2.0 drectory unless you know what you're doing...

You may read the 0.19.0 release announce to know a bit more about

I'm using 19.1 on debian testing, and have a similar issue, although i

Shutting down via any method (telinit 0, power button, E desktop menu)

eventually does shutdown after about probably 30-40 seconds of waiting.

Does your system ever shut down, or does it hang indefinitely?

sounds like you'd want to use the quickaccess module. go to main menu -
modules - launcher - quickaccess and enable it. Then right click on the
window border, go to add quickaccess in the drop down menu, and configure
the keybinding, and the behvior settings. One thing to make sure to do is
to make sure that the 'transient' option is unset, otherwise the
quickaccess you've set up will be lost when the window closes.

hope that helps!

OK, good to hear the udisk/udisks2 combo is ok. And just for clarity, the
issue isn't just with automouting, it with any kind of mounting through
enlightenment, including opening or right-clicking selecting 'mount'.

unfortunately, rebuilding enlightenement after installing udisks(1) didn't
help. Also, disabling udisks support entirely with --disable-mount-udisks
and using --enable-mount-eeze jsut resulted in e not noticing usb's getting

here are the two thread's I found about this issue:

A while ago in e17 days I had this file mode and also couldn't mount

rebuild enlightenment, not sure). If that doesn't work, try adding
--enable-mount-eeze at configure time

[e-users] mount error: Unable to mount with specified time out

2014-06-17 Thread Will Hopper
 Hi everyone,

I'm getting the following error trying to mount usb's through EFM (18.8):

 org.freedesktop.fm2.MountTimeout
Unable to mount the volume with specified time out

'file mode' is udisks2, with udisks2 version 2.1.3. I've seen this issue on
the mailing list in the past, and the issue seemed to be related to udisks
permissions. However, the resolution was a bit non descript, and involved
'nuking udisks and now everything is working fine'.

Not sure how to go about following this advice? Any hints on where to find
the file where this org.freedesktop.fm2.MountTimeout rule is
implemented, and how to set the permission correctly so i can mount USBs?

- Will

Thanks for the info about compatible versions. I was guessing that it was
because the files were called libbulletsoftbody.so.2.81 and
libbulletsoftbody.so.2.81 and that the hard coded version number was
causing problems finding it. Anyway, I first looked around for the 2.81
debs online to downgrade, but couldn't find the ones for debian, only
ubuntu, and they also weren't in the debian-snapshot archives. But today I
remembered the .deb archive of installed and previously installed packages
that apt keeps lying around, and luckily the 2.81 debs were still there! So
I manually downgraded and life is good again.

But I'm still confused about one thing - efl still depends on libbullet
even with --disable-physics?

Actually we do. :) The mingw build which runs for every push to the

if you don't use a login manager, you can start it by adding the line to
your ~/.xinitrc file

exec enlightenment_start

and using the startx command after you login. If you look at the end of the

paragraph recommending other parameters to set in the ~/.xinitrc file.

Re: [e-users] Problem with battery, or battery gadget?

2014-02-17 Thread Will Hopper
FWIW, I second what Alan said - i have the same problem with an old netbook
battery, and I think it is a problem with what the battery is reporting,
because sometimes the bios pauses before start up and complains about how
the battery won't take a charge or has low capacity or something, and other
times it goes on its way. E also has trouble reporting the status, and
often times the only way it gets semi accurate is after i accidentally let
it die - something about that sudden seems to get things in the battery
recallibrated, at least for a short time.

On Mon, Feb 17, 2014 at 10:05 AM, Alan McKinnon alan.mckin...@gmail.comwrote:

In my experience that is exactly how depleted batteries behave, they no
longer report a nice predictable or linear charge/discharge curve. And
they start to do this suddenly - usually related to partial or complete
failure of one of the cells.

Modern batteries are smart - the system asks them how much charge they
have and they answer up. That is what battery gadgets display. If the
battery reports garbage, so will the gadget.

Various hacky dodges could be dreamed up to try fudge around this, but
why? You have an old battery, replace it. It's no longer working as
designed, and it took 5 years to get there :-)

1.8.4, and enlightenment 1.8.3 on debian testing virtual machine. Did you
ever find any way to fix this issue?

strangely, xsession-errors has none of this, i could only find the ESTART
messages by running startx and sending stdout to a file.

marco,

are you still having this issue? I had a similar issue a while ago with no
applications being listed in the everything launcher or startup
applications (I don't use ibar so I don't know if it would have happened
there too) and it turned out to be a dbus problem with efreet or ethumb (I
forget which, i did a fix for both so i'm not sure which one it was)

Look in ~/.local/share/dbus-1/services, /usr/share/dbus-1/services/ or
/usr/local/share/dbus-1/services for the files
org.Enlightenment.Efreet.service and org.Enlightenment.Ethumb.service. If
you don't have these files, make them in the dbus-1 directory under your
installation prefix (so if you installed in /usr/local/, put them in
/usr/local/share/dbus-1/services). They should contain the following lines

[D-BUS Service]
Name=org.enlightenment.Efreet
Exec=/YOUR/INSTALLATION/PREFIX/bin/efreetd

adapt to you configuration as necessary, and do the same for ethumb.
If you do have them, make sure they're pointing to the

correct path for efreet and ethumb. I ran into this problem after
changing my install prefix when updating to e18, and make/make install
don't handle changing this file for you.

Hope this helps!

I have already tried removing ~/.e. I have now done this with

[e-users] Connecting with connman changes host name

2013-12-03 Thread Will Hopper
Hi all,

When I connect to a wired network using connman on the desktop, my host
name gets changed. Specifically, it gets a _1 added to the end. Looking
at the interfaces with ifconfig shows that a tun6to4 interface gets brought
up as well as eth0. Could this be the source of the problem? I don't see
anything in the econnman interface about ipv6, so is there any other way to
potentially stop this from happening?

OK Thanks Gustavo - I always feel bad asking questions that are only
tangentially related to the enlightenment world, and really appreciate the
help and advice. I'll try disabling ipv6 in the kernel and see if that
helps. I'll have to try it with another wired connection, it doesn't happen
with any wifi networks I connect to, so it may be the dhcp server here on
campus. But, it might be a connman issue because it doesn't happen when i
just use the network interfaces file with ifupdown. Anyway, its really only
an annoyance because sudo complains it 'can't resolve host' but I just put
another line in the /etc/hosts that has the _1 variant of the host name and
now sudo is happy.

you better ask connman list or #connman irc channel at freenode.

Indeed it will configure ipv6 if it can, you can disable ipv6 in the
kernel as I do by giving the kernel a command line.

as for the hostname, it will also change if you get something from the
dhcp server, so be aware that it is a dynamic system property these
days... which breaks some stupid tools like xhost that assumes a
hostname never changes. If you have control over tools, then use the
hostnamed dbus daemon or poll() /proc/sys/kernel/hostname (requires
recent linux kernel, like 1 year or so).

Re: [e-users] Multiple Display Problems?

2013-09-30 Thread Will Hopper
One last update: The problem with my screen shutting off seems to have been
because of conflicting info between /etc/X11/xorg.cong and
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/xorg.conf. The later only had info for for one
screen and was overiding changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Why X always picked
the external monitor to be screen 0 instead of my laptop screen, I'll never
know. Deleting /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/xorg.conf it has solved my
problem. I guess restoring the .e folder reverted back to a state where
enlightenment was attached to the right screen.

I now have a problem with compositing with multiple screens, but I'll start
a new thread for that.

enlightenment screen setup tool. Activating it, saving xorg.conf, and
logging out and logging back in to restart X results in the problem
starting all over again. Using twin-view instead of separate X screen works
 fine.

I was really surprised to see my .e directory make a difference, i thought

[e-users] No Compositing when using multiple monitors

Hi all,

I'm using enlightenement 17.99.17107.When using a multiple monitor setup
(single external monitor, seperate X screen), i get the 'no compositor
enabled, falling back to software' error message upon login. This error
doesn't occur when using just my laptop screen, or just the external
monitor. How can enable compositing support for both monitors?

Also, i can't drag windows from one screen to the other. The mouse cursor
continues onto the second screen, but the window stays behind. Any
suggestions?

open display'. If I set DISPLAY=:0.0, it just says 'Can't open display
:0.0'

Well, that likely rules out any problems with the nvidia driver.

OK, how about this. Start X, go to the console, run the xrandr command.
You should have authority to connect to the X server, though you'll
 probably
need to set the DISPLAY env (i.e export DISPLAY=:0.0). It'll be
 interesting
to see what xrandr thinks is the active screen.

Mick,

Are you using udisks to mount/unmount devices? That might be why I have
eeze_scanner and you don't. I have no idea what rtkit even is, going to
look it up now. And for me, udev-daemon, dbus daemon and such start before

It might be the order of the enightenment_fm lib file. Anyone know how I
could try and manipulate how that file gets started?

[e-users] Differences starting at boot t vs. restarting enlightenment

2013-05-11 Thread Will Hopper

2013-05-10 Thread Will Hopper
I installed it too for good measure, not sure if its being used, but I
don't want to mess with it.

However, the problem has gotten more interesting. It seems that getting
'eeze' mode support for mounting depends on how I start enlightenment. I
use lightdm as my display manager and have a short .xinitrc which starts
enlightenment with 'exec launch_dbus ck-launch-session enlightenment_start'
line. When I start enlightenment though the lightdm login screen, I have no
usb support. But if I restart enlightenment using the main menu, the mode
switches to 'eeze' and all my devices show up. This behavior is consistent
each time I start my machine.

How does the restart option in menu behave differently from 'exec
enlightenment_start? Is there a better way to start enlightenment from a
display manager?

Sorry, launch_dbus was a typo, it was launch-dbus in the file. And I think
you're right about dbus starting when X starts no matter what the user says.

I'd rather not get a bunch more kde stuff, but I do have some already
because of needing a bunch of qt and phonon stuff. I'm going to try the e

Re: [e-users] Can't mount or see removable media in file manager

2013-05-09 Thread Will Hopper
Hi all,

Update: I updated the sources to 19.99.16479, and if I use the
--enable-mount-eeze options, or --enable-mount-eeze and
--enable-mount-udisks options when configuring, the device mode gets set to
udisks, and icons show on the desktop, but clicking 'mount' in the context
menu does nothing.

If i use --disable-mount-udisks, the mode gets set to raster again. I'll
keep upgrading and trying different options to see if I can get it to
change to eeze mode, unless anyone has a better idea.

On a related note, should I be uninstalling before I recompile and
install, or is ok to update in place?

I too am using Jessie. My previous git build was 'flakey' (earlier than

Pato,

I followed you instructions (almost, i spaced out and forgot to make
uninstall before i deleted and cloned the sources again but it was pretty
easy to find everything manually with ls e* and ls libe* in all directories
under /usr), cleaned out my .cache folder, and rebuilt everything with the
options you specified. I had no luck, still mode 'udisks' with no
functionality.

I used make uninstall make clean make distclean, and rebuilt
enlightenment with the options Luca suggested earlier in the thread
(--enable-mount-eeze --disable-mount-udisks --enable-device-udev), minus
the --disable-device-hal since it's disabled by default. Still didn't work,
this time in mode 'raster' but i restarted and viola, everything worked.
The mode was 'eeze', all my usb devices and internal hd partitions were
showing and mounting was functional!

This switching on restart seems a bit random, I hope it doesn't decide to
change back again! Glad I didn't get desperate and have to start over again
on the .e config.

If anyone is still reading this thread, a really cool feature to think
about adding would be a way to toggle between the device backends you have
enabled, instead of letting everything be detected automatically.

Thanks Pato and everyone for the help, hopefully I won't be re-opening this
issue!

You may have some stale stuff floating around.

I usuallly do a make uninstall in the sources that I'm going to rebuild,
just so I know everything is fresh.

In your case I would make uninstall in all the core/git: efl, elementary,
 enllightenment, emotion_generic_players, evas_generic_loaders.

Then go thru /usr/lib and delete everything enlightenment related that's
left over. Be careful what you delete.

Go to your /home/you/.cache directory and delete the enlightenment stuff in
 there

Then delete all your previous sources that you've cloned, and reclone them.

Compile efl elementary: ./autogen.sh --prefix=/your/install/dir make
  sudo make install sudo ldconfig

 Compile enlightenment: ./autogen.sh --prefix=/your/install/dir
 --enable-mount-eeze make sudo make install

Compile emotion_generic_players evas_generic_loaders just like efl
 elementary.

This works fine for me on 16470, and Debian Jessie. I'm able to put in a
removable device, see it on the desktop and mount by right clicking. Like I
said earlier the version before 16450 (I don't remember which) I compiled
was very flakey and wouldn't show any removable devices on the desktop.

If this doesn't help, you may also need to move your .e dir to .e_bak and
start the config process over as well.
