Tesla Model S - Guy Hall, a electric car advocate and president of the
[Sacramento, CA] Electric Vehicle Association, recently completed a trip in
his Tesla Model S that brought him from the U.S.-Mexico border to Fairbanks
poses outside the [Trans-Alaska] Pipeline on Aug. 11, 2014.

FAIRBANKS — A press of the pedal and everyone in Californian Guy Hall’s
Tesla Model S was pressed into their seats, with what electric car
enthusiasts call a “Tesla Grin” spreading across their faces, as the red
electric car went from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds.

Hall, an advocate for electric cars and president of the Sacramento Electric
Vehicle Association, completed the trip from the U.S.-Mexico border near
Yuma, Arizona, to Fairbanks this week, showing off the high-tech electric
car along the way.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “The moment you feel that instant torque —
it’s like a sports car and can go 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds — they call it
the Tesla grin.”

Hall, a 30-year employee of Hewlett-Packard, was by no means much of a car
enthusiast, owning a long series of Ford Tauruses most of his life, but he
was a techie. And as an aficionado of high-tech gadgets, electric cars were
intriguing. Now his family owns one of each of the auto industry’s leading
electric cars: a Chevrolet Volt, a Nissan Leaf and the Tesla.

Not only do electric vehicles save big on fuel bills — in the Lower 48,
charging amounts to about $1 per gallon equivalent or about $2 in Fairbanks
by Hall’s estimations — but the Tesla S also brings some big changes to cars
from everything related to comfort to safety.

“What surprises me is that with most tech businesses, you try to innovate on
one or two dimensions, but they’ve innovated on everything and seem to have
kept it all in control. It just boggles my mind,” he said.

There’s no traditional key to open or start the car, just a keychain that
the vehicle senses when you get close. You can also change the car’s
handling, from a stiff sports car feel to the noodly “comfort” handling, its
suspension all from the an oversized touch pad that’s replaced the
traditional knobs of a car’s console.

Hall made the trip, which he’s dubbed as the T5 (Tesla Tijuana to Tundra
Tour), in about 17 days, stopping to recharge the vehicle’s batteries and
give rides to locals along the way. The Tesla model that Hall drove has a
range of about 250 miles and charging times can range from 20 minutes on
high-power chargers to a day on a regular wall socket.

It wasn’t the easiest trip without the availability of the somewhat regular
electric car charging stations along Lower 48 highways, but Hall had done
his homework.

“I sat down with a pad of paper and figured I could do it,” he said. “I also
had plan Bs and plan Cs, just in case.”

Along the Yukon, where there are long stretches without gas stations, Hall
would either recharge at RV parks or find mechanic or welding shops that had
220-volt power plugins to charge his car, trading rides in the sporty car
for electricity.

Hall said that while it took him longer to get to Fairbanks than it would
have in a gasoline-fueled car, it gave him an opportunity to explore Canada
and Alaska in a way that he wouldn’t have been able to if he was speeding
through.

“It slows you down to take a break,” he said. “Sometimes it’s about an hour,
but you get a chance to meet people. I’ve met some marvelously nice people
here.”

Hall said he plans to depart Fairbanks this afternoon to return home to
Sacramento, but said that he hopes to make the T5 trip into a tradition
among other electric car enthusiasts, handing off a trophy to drivers who
can make it in record time.

New license plate may help save lives
Aug 19, 2014 By Alana Cerrone

A new license plate may help protect first responders from accidentally
electrocuting themselves during accident rescues involving electric
vehicles.

The bill signed into law by Gov. Lincoln Chafee last month requires electric
vehicle owners to have a special license plate so that first responders,
emergency crews, and even two truck drivers know it is electric.

Knowing if a vehicle is electric will help crews decide which instrument is
appropriate to use to rescue people trapped inside.

“It is not very well-known that rescue workers can get electrocuted from
using jaws of life on an electric vehicle, but when that information came to
light I wanted us to be proactive about the issue,” said Senator Edward
O'Neill, who sponsored the law.

The law applies to electric and also hybrid vehicle owners.

The cells in the TESLA pack are a group in parallel then the parallel
groups are wired in series for the desired voltage, The key to pack
survival when a cell fails is a fusible link (Correctly sized short length
of wire) in series with each and every cell then any malfunctioning cell
 is
isolated when the link opens. (Reducing pack capacity about 2%.)

Well... There are those that believe this, and it is certainly done.

However, think about failure modes: Sooner or later, a cell will fail.
What happens if one of the cells in parallel shorts? All the rest will
 dump
all their stored energy into that one shorted cell. That is very likely
 to
result in a burst cell or even a fire. And packed like this, once one
 cell
starts burning, it can set the rest on fire.

When laptop manufacturers connected their cells directly in parallel,
there were some dramatic failures and fires. Since then, reputable
manufacturers are using cells with *internal* fuses and safety devices.
Hobbyists and el-cheapo manufacturers aren't likely to use such cells.

Dave,

I have a pack like that, 16 cells, 48V. It is heavy and not packed tight
as it uses the plastic frames available for these cells. But the threaded
holes in the stamped end plates seem to be well made and can take real
torque. If they are nickel that explains their high cost. I always
assumed they were copper with Ni plating.

Weight, cost, and low energy and pack density are probably cons, but maybe
the plastc boxed CALB and TS, etc. are similar? I guess nothing is as
dense as the laptop style cells.

The small packs I have are not specified well, so I can't compare datasheet
items.

Their vendors even offer complete kits with hardware for grouping and

But then you might be falling back into the problems of loosening and

They also seem to be a bit more expensive per watt-hour than some other
LiFePO4 cells, but that might be because I don't know where to look.

You can make a good electrical connection with pressure alone, but it
takes a *lot* of pressure.

Corrosion is another problem. The contact surface is completely exposed,
and subject to moisture, dirt, and the resulting corrosion. It would
help to gold plate the connections, but who would want to spend the money?

Oddly, the link to the bill referred to includes none of the language being
discussed in some of the articles.

The language only authorizes the state motor vehicles folks to makes
regulations for special plates. It doesn't even requires them to do so.

Arguably it could apply to at least some FCEVs, as some are hybrids.

For example, yesterday I saw a truck that was a battery dominant FCEV hybrid.

But I agree with your concerns about where the burden seems to be placed, at
least according to the articles.(the bill language you linked doesn't do that -
it's left to their DMV to decide).

I wonder why they don't just use stickers as is done for CNG and H2 fueled
vehicles.

That's a good plan. Do you know how he tested it, to be sure the fuse
wire is sized right to actually work?

I believe he had a discharge tester and turned up the amps output until
the wire flashedaround 10 amps

I believe he also used insulated wire to contain any molten copper beads
from getting loose.

Re: [EVDL] Tesla-S EV Power-trip e-Journeys from Mexico to Alaska

They must have really improved the Alaska highway if it's now passable in a
Tesla.

BTW, slowing down and enjoying the trip is a concept that's quite familiar to
owners of VW busses!

[EVDL] EVDL biz: Hydrogen and fuel cells discussion

2014-08-20 Thread EVDL Administrator via EV
Although the original 1991 EVDL charter mentions fuel cells, the list
decided by consensus nearly 20 years ago that we'd minimize discussion of H2
and fuel cells. IIRC, the main reason was that the discussion tended to
create a fair bit of heat, but not very much light.

That doesn't seem to have changed much.

Not that I want to send anybody away, but if H2 and fuel cells are your only
(or perhaps even your primary) interests in the EV world, maybe the EVDL
isn't really the place for you. However, I'd just about wager that you have
other EV-related interests too. Bring 'em on! But please save the H2 and
fuel cell discussion for other more appropriate forums.

Another perfectly reasonable way of handling H2 and fuel cell discussion is
to immediately take those discussions off the list and continue them in
private email.

EVDL topics range pretty wide - and we like it that way - but this is one of
a very small number of topics that we discourage. You'll find all the
details in the EVDL conventions. Please read them.

http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#conv

For this specific issue, please see point 2f.

Thanks.

Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Vehicle-apartheid! RI law punishes EV hybrid drivers

2014-08-20 Thread Ben Goren via EV

Other Hydrogen systems use the hydrogen as fuel for the ICE.

I'm not aware of any of these, but would certainly be interested in learning
about where it is being done.

Regular gasoline engines are, for the most part, equally happy burning
stoichiometric mixes of gasoline, propane, or hydrogen gas. Replace the fuel
delivery system to provide that mixture to the combustion chambers and the rest
will run just fine.

There are caveats. Energy density is different, so power production differs.
Compressibility of the gas mixtures differ, so you need different timing for
optimum results. And hydrogen does really nasty things to metals and gaskets
with prolonged exposure.

But the basic mechanics are the same.

Wikipedia has a good article for a starting point:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_internal_combustion_engine_vehicle

Note that this doesn't apply to diesel engines...but, with those, you can
substitute jet fuel, kerosene, or olive oil for diesel with (similarly
relatively) minor necessary modifications.

Cheers,

b
