Re: [EVDL] EValert: !Don't buy a salvaged Tesla EV to repair drive! (video)

2014-10-04 Thread via EV
It's not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. The big standard for gasoline
wrecks is is it leaking any fluids? If it is leaking any fluids, the vehicle
gets towed away and no attempt is made to start it. An EV does not have so
obvious an indicator. A wreck could expose some high voltage wiring, hold shut
the overpressure caps, dent some cells, sever a few parallel connections, etc.
For all of these the EV might run just fine, might even look fine, but not be
safe.

The energy content of gasoline is 32.4MJ/L, and 1MJ=0.28kWh; so, a 10 (US)
gallon tank of ordinary gasoline contains 343kWh of energy, and yet every other
auto manufacturer has *millions* of vehicles on the road with a
manually-resettable-by-anyone inertia switch to disable this energy source in
the event of a sufficiently serious accident.

Yes, a means of automatically disabling/disconnecting the traction pack in the
event of an accident makes sense for ~any~ EV, however, there is no obvious
justification for this feature not being manually resettable without the
assistance of the manufacturer. It seems reasonable that the vehicle might have
the intelligence to refuse to re-enable should its onboard diagnostics
determine that something is unsafe or defective with its systems (in the same
way that a manually-resettable circuit breaker will immediately re-open if the
a fault condition persists), but again it is not obvious that there is any need
for the involvement of the manufacturer.

Self-taught electric engineer Al Gadja has committed what some may consider
to be historic car heresy, converting his 1939 Dodge truck into an electric
vehicle. But to you and me, this is the 21st century of hot rodding, and
this pre-war pickup has a longer driver range than many brand new EVs found
on dealership lots.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Gadja spent many of his 74 years on
this earth working for IBM, despite never getting a college degree. Over his
lifetime he built up a wealth of electrical knowledge mostly by learning it
himself or going to IBM-provided classes. He’s also a fan of old hot rod
pickups, and dragged the ‘39 Dodge around the country with him with the
hopes of hot rodding it. Then electric cars got popular, and Gadja decided
to replace the inline-six engine with an electric drivetrain.

The lithium-ion phosphate battery packs he used line the truck bed and
weighs nearly 1,000 pounds. Yet he claims he can drive about 100 miles
between charges, and it takes just six hours to top off the battery pack,
allowing him to put an impressive 5,000 miles on the odometer in the first
year of driving. It took Gadja three years to perform the conversion, and
many people don’t even realize it’s electric.

Though the classic Dodge truck lacks power steering, it does have LED
lighting, a digital gauge cluster, and the electric motor transfers power
through the original three-speed manual transmission. This is a homemade hot
rod of the highest caliber, the vanguard of a new tradition of shade tree
mechanics electrifying classic vehicles with powerful and practical
drivetrains. There’s a whole gallery of pics of Gadja’s Dodge that you
should definitely check out if you’re into this sort of thing.

I have a long list of classic cars I’d like to convert into EVs, starting
with my 1969 Mercury Cougar.

Following in the footsteps of its rival Toyota, which conducted a “positive”
campaign for its hybrid Prius with a knitted graffiti art in Brixton last
autumn, the carmaker Nissan is also promoting its fully electrical model
LEAF with the help of street art.

The Nissan marketers have teamed up with the British street artist Paul
Curtis aka Moose to create a mural depicting an iconic London’s skyline. The
painting was created on a wall dirty with condensed car emissions in Moose’s
signature reverse graffiti style—cleaning off the layer of dirt using a
power washer. Unlike other graffiti artists, he never uses coloured aerosols
but removes dirt and grim off walls to reveal some amazing patterns.

For Nissan, Moose has sketched up and then off-painted some recognizable
London’s landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, The Shard, Battersea Power
Station and The London Eye, to name a few. The jet washer he used to clean
the wall was powered by the Nissan LEAF via the LEAF to Home equipment—a
portable device that converts electricity from the car battery into an
electric power for household needs.

The project aims to address the problem of air pollution in the biggest
European cities caused by gasoline cars, as well as drives awareness of
eco-friendly electric cars such as Nissan LEAF.

Moose’s artwork for Nissan is currently on show in the subway on Station’s
Approach, Waterloo.

“Electric cars and alternative fuelling systems provide the brightest
future we’ve ever known in the history of the automotive industry in terms
of protecting our environment.

It’s a pleasure to be given the opportunity to create public art in this
way and I’m very pleased with the iconic simplicity of the mural and its
message,” commented the artist on the collaboration with Nissan.

Interestingly, a year ago in an interview to Jack McKain for the Active Soul
Design blog, Moose said he never liked collaborating with ad agencies and
marketers. When asked about his experience creating advertisement pieces,
the artist said:

“(I've done advertisement pieces) Several times. It always strikes me as
weird though, that advertising provokes consumerism, and that in turn makes
the very dirt that they want to write their message in. It’s their own dirt…
or is it? Is it ours? I ask them that. I’ve never liked doing them, but if I
use the product then it would be weird not to.”

In 2014, Nissan was ranked 4th greenest global brand by Interbrand, one
position higher than in 2013.

Nissan is highlighting London’s battle with air quality by using the 100%
electric Nissan LEAF – the world’s best-selling electric vehicle (EV) – to
power a striking piece of street art in Waterloo, London that depicts the
Capital’s iconic skyline.

The car manufacturer commissioned Reverse Graffiti artist, Moose – the
founder of his field – to create the mass-scale mural which was unveiled
today.

Unlike traditional graffiti, Moose creates his art by cleaning dirt off
surfaces using a jet washer or wire brush, leaving a striking design in
negative on the wall. Much of the dirt is caused by particulate matter from
vehicle exhausts, levels of which often exceed guidelines and limits in busy
areas of London and other European cities.

The artwork – which is on show in the subway on Station’s Approach, Waterloo
– includes a host of London’s most famous landmarks: Buckingham Palace, The
Shard, Battersea Power Station and The London Eye, to name just a few.
Produced to highlight the growing issue of poor air quality across Europe’s
biggest cities, it aims to showcase how much cleaner they could be if more
people adopted electric vehicles.

In a world-first, the jet washer used to clean the wall was powered by the
Nissan LEAF via the LEAF to Home equipment – a portable device that converts
electricity from the car’s battery to provide as much as two days-worth of
power to a household on a single charge.

Before the artwork made its way onto the wall, Moose sketched the skyline by
hand before creating stencils that pieced together to produce the finished
artwork, standing some 2.5 metres tall and 10

NTU and German scientists invent award winning 2-in-1 motor for electric
cars
]

Scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and German Aerospace
Centre (DLR) have invented a 2-in-1 electric motor which increases the range
of electric vehicles.

This innovative engine integrates the traditional electric motor with the
air-con compressor, typically two separate units. This novel, space-saving
design allows the use of bigger batteries, which can increase the range of
electric vehicles by an additional 15 to 20 per cent.

Prof Subodh Mhaisalkar, Executive Director of the Energy Research Institute
@ NTU (ERI@N), said: The biggest challenge with electric cars in tropical
megacities is the range that they can travel on a full-charge, because their
batteries are needed to power both the engine and the air-conditioning. In
tropical countries like Singapore, up to half the battery's capacity is used
to power the air-conditioning system.

The new 2-in-1 design allows the electric motor to be more efficient in
powering the car's wheels, while its integrated air-con compressor uses less
power due to synergy between the engine and the compressor, which can also
tap on energy regenerated directly from the car's brakes.

With the potential boost in range through the efficient use of energy, the
joint invention recently won the Best Originality Award in the TECO Green
Tech International Contest held in Taiwan.

The competition saw 19 entries from top universities including Boston
University, University of California (UCLA), Waseda University, and
universities from China and Russia.

NTU's partner, DLR, the German aerospace and space agency will conduct
further tests and improvements to the new engine with the aim of eventual
commercialisation. The team is applying for a Proof-Of-Concept (POC) grant
in Singapore. After the development of the prototype, test bedding and
refinements will be done at DLR's facilities in Germany.

Prof Mhaisalkar, said this innovation will pave the way for extending the
range of electric cars, as the integrated design combines the two of the
most important parts of an electric car, thus reducing its complexity into
one highly efficient solution.

With the global population of electric vehicles set grow rapidly to 20
million in 2020, a more efficient electric motor cum air-con compressor,
will enable cars to travel further on a single charge, added Prof
Mhaisalkar. This energy efficiency will in turn reduce overall greenhouse
emissions and promote sustainable transportation solutions.

This integrated design solution for air conditioning will go a long way in
reducing the range anxiety of drivers, reduce maintenance costs, and will
save time and money for the driver.

For the automobile manufacturers, the new electric motor will also cost less
to produce, as it requires less material than its counterparts. Both the
weight and size of the electric motor are reduced, creating more space for
other components such as an auxiliary battery source.

Dr Michael Schier, from DLR's Institute of Vehicle Concepts, said: For
electric vehicles, the air conditioning uses a lot of electrical energy,
thereby cutting down the range of electric cars by up to 50 per cent. To
increase the energy efficiency and therefore the range of electric cars, the
thermal management and the integration of additional functions into existing
powertrain components play a major role.

By integrating the refrigerant compressor directly into the electric motor,
we save components, weight and cost. Simultaneously, the more regenerative
braking part of the kinetic energy is passed directly to the refrigerant
compressor and thus the efficiency is further increased, added Dr Schier.

Research scholar Mr Satheesh Kumar from the Energy Research Institute @ NTU
said his award-winning, integrated electric motor challenges conventional
design that goes way back to the 1960s when air-conditioning first became
popular.

Back then, air-conditioning was something new that was an add-on feature to
a car's combustion engine, said the 29-year-old Singaporean.

Since we are now designing electric vehicles from scratch, I see no reason
why we should keep both units separate. As we have proven, combining the two
gives us synergy – a more efficient use of

Because the Vulcan salute and the Volkswagen logo have so much in common,
it's been decided that Mr Spock and James T. Kirk are the perfect people to
spread Volkswagen's message from the future. The German carmaker's very
first electric car, the e-Golf, is about to hit American showrooms, and two
legendary Star Trek actors are going to star in its marketing campaign.

The commercials aren't quite ready to air yet, but we're the two actors seem
to be very impressed with the electric hatchback, which is always a good
sign. Starting at $35,445 plus destination, the e-Golf is going to be a
tough sale to make for VW dealers. However, this Nissan Leaf rival has the
right badge and plenty of standard equipment to make up for its hefty price.

Last time we saw Leonard Nimoy, he played a very dignified future version of
Mr. Spock in the reboot of Star Trek as a Hollywood blockbuster. As for
William Shatner, well he hasn't aged as well, but since he's 83 and a big
car fan, we'll let that slide.

Not that this has any relevance to our story about electric Golfs, but we
thought you Trekkies (that's what Star Trek fans are called) might want to
know that Nimoy based the Vulcan salute on a Jewish blessing sign made with
two hands in the same position as a symbol of the Hebrew letter Shin,
meaning Almighty (God). It's kind of funny how a religious symbol ties in
with the Hippie generation, their VW Buses in the 60s and 70s and now an
electric vehicle from the same company.

Last year Volkswagen donated more than a million dollars to an international
youth center at Auschwitz.

In 2011 it donated $1 million to the Anti-Defamation League.

And in 2009 it was reported that the Beetle — that iconic VW creation — was
actually designed by a Jew.

But the German automaker — which, like other industries in the Third Reich,
cooperated with the Nazis and has been boycotted by many Jews as a result —
may have finally figured out a strategy to put the stigma of its past behind
it. It has recruited both the stars of the original “Star Trek” series to
plug its new car, the e-Golf, in the United States.

According to Auto Evolution, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy — both Jewish
— will star in the marketing campaign for VW’s first electric car.

The two were apparently tapped because the “Vulcan salute and the Volkswagen
logo have so much in common,” the auto industry publication reported.

That salute, as any Jewish Trekkie worth his salt will know, is similar to a
Jewish blessing sign – two hands forming the Hebrew letter Shin — that
frequently appears on Jewish gravestones.

Could the twin appearance of Spock and Kirk convince diehard boycotters of
German cars (who, as journalist Jeffrey Goldberg noted in a recent Atlantic
column, rarely boycott any other German products) to drop their grudge and
buy the wagon of der Volk?

Bimah me up, Scottie!

[EVDL] Really efficient electric drive trains and what they are?

2014-10-04 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
When I saw the Stella it made growling ticking noises that stopped after the
vehicle made some speed. They said these motors were 98 % efficient. I
thought the run of the mill ADC motor with a Curtis controller was 90 % and
brushless were a bit more efficient. Are these motors worth the 10's of
thousands they cost? Are there motorcycle/bicycle hub motors we can buy that
are very efficient? Each of the Stella motors are 20kw. Some bicycle hub
motors are very powerful. 10 or more kw. Is there a loss of efficiency with
these new powerful motors? What do I need to compliment a very aerodynamic
body/go freeway speeds not suck the life out of my batteries? Lawrence Rhodes

Re: [EVDL] EValert: !Don't buy a salvaged Tesla EV to repair drive! (video)

2014-10-04 Thread via EV

I gave myself an idea. Fill the battery boxes with a fluid. If the fluid is
leaking after a wreck, the battery boxes have been compromised, so the car
shouldn't be driven.
