[EVDL] EVLN: What to do about a law-flouting unpredictable e-biker.ca?

Dear Urban Diplomat: what should I do about an annoying e-biker?

Dear Urban Diplomat,
Every day on my commute along Eastern Avenue, this guy on an electric bike
zooms past my car, sometimes in the bike lane, sometimes weaving between
cars, sometimes popping up onto the sidewalk for a few metres before
plonking back onto the street. It’s maddening. Short of gently nudging him
with my bumper, what should I do?
—Driven to Despair, Cliffside

Nothing brings humankind together like our shared loathing of law-flouting
e-bikers. The scourge of the road, they are neither bike nor motorcycle, yet
their operators adopt the unpredictability of the former and the swagger of
the latter. Legally, e-bikes aren’t allowed on sidewalks or divided cycle
tracks (like the one on Sherbourne), but they are allowed in painted bike
lanes. So for the sidewalk portion of your complaint, the law is on your
side. Do not—repeat, NOT—nudge him with your bumper or any other part of
your car’s anatomy. Call the non-emergency police number at 416-808- to
provide the where and when of his repeat offending. With luck, you’ll be
driving by and witness the bust.

Why motorists get so angry at cyclists — a psychologist's theory
By Susan Perry | 02/20/13

Motorists get angry when they think cyclists are getting away with something
by breaking society’s agreed-upon rules.

A study issued earlier this year found that motor vehicle drivers and
cyclists are equally responsible for car-bike collisions in Minneapolis.
But, as comments to media reports of that study demonstrate, the finger
pointing continues, with bicyclists blaming aggressive drivers for most
collisions and drivers blaming “inconsiderate and stupid” cyclists.

The anger from motorists toward cyclists seems especially raw. So I read
with interest British psychologist Tom Stafford’s latest Neurohacks column
for BBC Future in which he offers his theory for “why cyclists enrage car
drivers.”

“It's not because cyclists are annoying,” he writes. “It isn't even because
we have a selective memory for that one stand-out annoying cyclist over the
hundreds of boring, non-annoying ones (although that probably is a factor).
No, my theory is that motorists hate cyclists because they think they offend
the moral order.”

An evolutionary response
And how, exactly, do cyclists offend that moral order? It has to do,
Stafford explains, with two cornerstones of cooperation theory: the “free
rider problem” and “altruistic punishment.”

The free rider problem is the resentment that occurs when we believe some
people are “cheating” at what Stafford calls the “game of coordination where
we have to rely on each other to do the right thing.”

In other words, we get angry when we think someone else is getting away with
something by breaking society’s agreed-upon rules.

And one way humans have evolved to deal with that problem is altruistic
punishment.

“Altruistic punishment is a punishment that costs you as an individual, but
doesn't bring any direct benefit,” explains Stafford. “As an example,
imagine I'm at a football match and I see someone climb in without buying a
ticket. I could sit and enjoy the game (at no cost to myself), or I could
try to find security to have the guy thrown out (at the cost of missing some
of the game). That would be altruistic punishment.”

Blame evolution
Which brings us back to drivers’ rage at cyclists. Writes Stafford:

[E]volution has built into the human mind a hatred of free-riders and
cheaters, which activates anger when we confront people acting like this —
and it is this anger which prompts altruistic punishment. In this way, the
emotion is evolution's way of getting us to overcome our short-term
self-interest and encourage collective social life.

So now we can see why there is an evolutionary pressure pushing motorists
towards hatred of cyclists. Deep within the human psyche, fostered there
because it helps us co-ordinate with strangers and so build the global
society that is a hallmark of our species, is an anger at people who break
the rules, who take the benefits without contributing to the cost. And
cyclists trigger this anger when they use the roads but don't follow the
same rules as cars.

Now, cyclists reading this might think but the rules aren't made for us —
we’re more

The “green” monster from Kawasaki might soon go eco-friendly green as
reports from automotive website Visor Down suggest that the Japanese
two-wheeler major has filed as many as 10 patents for electric motorcycles
in last three months. This pretty much explains the recent reports of
Kawasaki registering Ninja E2 and E2R trademarks.

The patents that were reported by the aforementioned website reveal the
battery position and the frame along with various components that would be
found on this upcoming electric motorcycle. The sketch also suggests that
the upcoming electric vehicles may also receive the tried and tested tubular
steel trellis frame. The output figures are still unknown but we expect
Kawasaki to pack in some serious power with this electric motorcycle ...

Electric sports bikes revealed in patent drawings

KAWASAKI has filed patents for a number of electric sports bike designs,
revealing the direction of plans for future Ninja models.

The firm has filed at least 10 electric motorcycle patents in the last three
months, showing machines with a trellis frame and sports bike geometry.

The sketches show different possible positions within the chassis for a huge
battery pack. One design features a detachable section of frame tubes,
allowing easy removal of the battery.

Kawasaki electric motorcycle patents were revealed as long ago as 2012 but
the rate of recent new designs suggests the firm has stepped up its work in
the area.

It could point to purpose of recently revealed new Ninja trademarks,
including ‘Ninja E2’ and ‘Ninja E2R’ ...

A fleet of maxi scooters comprising 30 BMW C evolution was delivered to the
Barcelona City Hall for use by the local police. The first completely
electrically powered scooter manufactured by BMW Motorrad will allow the
police to move with maximum efficiency and zero emissions.

BMW Motorrad's C evolution combines sheer electric riding pleasure with
excellent dynamic qualities as well as the advantages of a zero emission
vehicle, thereby providing a whole new riding experience.

With its high performance, the BMW C evolution was a perfect choice for
Barcelona - a pioneering city in the use of environment-friendly vehicles.
The model purchased by the city authorities is identical to the regular
version, but with modifications to adapt it to police use. These include a
raised screen for protection purposes and a public address and signalling
system.

Highlighting the importance of the delivery of this fleet for BMW, Guenther
Seemann, President of BMW Group Spain, was there to hand over the scooter
keys to mayor Xavier Trias. Seemann said, The delivery of this fleet is a
special achievement for the BMW Group for two main reasons: it is the first
fleet of electric maxi scooters worldwide to be supplied and secondly the
recipient is the city of Barcelona - a role model in Europe when it comes to
two-wheel mobility. At the BMW Group we believe strongly that the future of
urban mobility will be shaped in the next few years by cities with minimum
emissions.

2015-03-18 Thread Lee Hart via EV

Chris Meier via EV wrote:

It depends on exactly what part is being affected.

Silicon devices (most ICs, transistors, and diode) are most affected by
infrared light.

LEDs are most affected by light of the same color as the light they produce.

If there is an actual light level sensor (photoresistor, etc.) then it
could be responsive to the whole spectrum.

This is all affected by whatever filters the light has to pass through
first. For example, PCB material is usually greenish; so light that
passes through it to get to the chip on the back will be mostly green.

That said... while any given device is the most sensitive to its
favorite color, it still reacts to other wavelengths. Sunlight is so
intense and has such a broad spectrum that it will affect all of them.

I suppose the meter question is peripherally related to EVs in the sense
that a meter like this might be used in conversion EVs.

There was a recent dustup about the Raspberry Pi II being camera shy. It

First of all, stupid is not fitting word for this list
Second; if an idea doesn't die there must be a reason ie Electric cars...
Perhaps battery swapping doesn't work for public use, but all electric
swappable-battery trucks ran until the 1960's just fine. In a fleet or
industrial application swapping makes sense. I always like Clare Bell ev light
rail concept, swapping the packs at each end in the days of lead -acid..with
lithium the swappling could be at one end or the route 3x as long.there are
many apps out there that can use different EV solutions. Please stay
open-minded
also.. the most important thing for a bicyclist is to stay upright - sometimes
that means pushing your presence in to auto drivers conscience
I don't shop where I can't charge.
I also think that there are a number of different possible business models for
how a swap might work, including some that we haven't thought of yet.

Fundamentally the problem is economics: in a car you have a $100 tank
that you're filling up with $50 of fuel.  But in an EV, you have a $40,000
pack that you're filling up with $5 of fuel.

That's...that's an excellent observation that puts it in a perspective I've
 never thought about before.

Re: [EVDL] Battery Swap - the stupid idea that wont die...

2015-03-18 Thread Roland via EV

My first EV which was call Transformer I and still driving it today had two
large batteries in it. One 300 ah 50 cell in the back and one 300 ah 40 cell
in the front.

These were like fork lift batteries. The company, Electric Fuel Propulsion
Company, base in Troy Michigan, also built the batteries for mail and fork lift
vehicles.

The motor and transmission also can be remove by dropping these units by using
a modified floor jack with supports for the motor and transmission. The motor
and transmission cross member mounts are modified so the cross member can be
unbolted and drop down.

Only have to remove the two power wires off the motor, unplug sensor wires from
the motor and shifting cable from the transmission. After the vehicle is jack
up 30 inches on heavy duty jack stands, it only takes about 65 minutes to do
this exchange.

When I visit the plant in 1976, they show me how to replace the battery packs.
You first lift the vehicle about 2 feet and place four heavy duty dolly under
the battery box which was made out of 1/4 thick aluminum weighing about 1500
lbs each.

You unplug the battery box, and remove twelve 1/2 inch bolts. Then you lift
the vehicle about 12 inches more and roll the battery box out. I then could do
the maintenance on this battery. This was normally pulling a cell out, pulling
the cell plates out of the cell box which is call a jar.

Record the specific gravity of the electrolyte and place the cells in a
container of distill water. The container is place on a table that vibrated
that removes the particles between the plates.

Test the battery for any shorts between the cells. If required, pull out a
separator and push in a new separator at the same time. Reassemble the cell,
replace the electrolyte with the same specific gravity reading that was remove,
charge the cell and the way you go for another 10 years or so.

Today, the batteries which are Li Ion - Graphite type can also be remove in
about one hour. There are three aluminum battery containers that hold 108
cells each. They are bolted down onto a plated steel plate inside a fiberglass
battery box with six 3/8 inch bolts.

To remove these batteries, the hatch cover can be lifted up to 90 degrees, and
the battery box cover can also be lifted up at 90 degrees. Two battery cables
are unbolted from the batteries and the BMS cables are unplug from the Onion
BMS control unit.

Use a modified engine hoist that uses a cable is connected to the end plates of

 Yes and no.

The owners of the forklifts and the batteries swap the batteries in and
out the same way you yourself might swap the batteries on your cordless
 drill.

But what the owners of the forklifts _aren't_ doing is swapping batteries
with some other company that charges them. That's the part that doesn't
 make economic sense.

Right. With a forklift, you own 2 or 3 batteries, and you do the swap.
The only economic change is that the battery becomes slightly more valuable
as you charge it, and then less valuable as you use it (and depreciate
it). Your total economic investment isn't changing by several thousand
dollars up or down when you swap, and there's no opportunity for you to
ditch your pack onto some other poor guy because you fried it that time
when you left the forklift lights on all night.

[EVDL] Fwd: [NEDRA] 100-plus-racers-just-bought-fiat-500e-electric-cars

2015-03-18 Thread Ben Goren via EV
I'm certain this will be of at least equal, if not more, interest here.

I still say the major automakers are missing out on a gold mine by not yet
releasing relatively inexpensive electric-powered sports cars for the
testosterone-poisoned crowd. Perhaps this will help nudge them in that
direction.

Sure, they ain't drag racers, but this sort of thing will open a lot of new
 eyes.

Also FYI, the Kia Soul EV is leaking out of compliance states already and a
couple of cars have made it to Washington State dealers. Scuttle is that a
wider release is coming as Kia is able to ramp up production...

Re: [EVDL] Watch Malfunctioning meter. on YouTube

2015-03-18 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
Yes it was in my veggie diesel.  I posted here because the guys on the diesel
list are not as savvy as the EV list concerning electronics.  It's a neat gizmo
that is easier to use than the meters in our cars as it needs no wiring.
However my diesel is a solar vehicle of sorts.  I run it on vegetable oil which
is grown by sun power.  Lawrence Rhodes
