2016-09-08 Thread damon henry via EV
Thanks Cor for the feedback. I had not considered the need to limit the
current beyond the internal overcurrent protection. I will have to look into
that further as well. That might actually be enough to swing me in a different
direction. I have been very happy with a 6 amp charging solution for my
motorcycle from a Chinese lithium charger. I have verified with the
manufacturer that I can get the same charger with the cutoff voltage I want,
but decided to also try out the Meanwell. The price for both solutions is
comparable but the 10 amp charging vs 6 amp seemed like a significant advantage
for the Meanwell route, but maybe not as significant if I need to dial that
back...

2016-09-08 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
Definitely put it in a dry place and if you can mount it with some shock
absorbing then that might be beneficial, but the frame of a vehicle
typical does not move fast enough to put a lot of stress on electronics,
it is more the vibrations and an EV has a lot less of those.
Note that Meanwell supplies are typically spec'ed to work off AC and DC
power and we have used them in large numbers in test setups for 48V
power, but those do not get powered off very often, so I cannot speak
about how it holds up with daily power cycling.
Another thing is the current limit that is required for a charger: the
Meanwells have a built-in overcurrent protection, which means that you
will be running the supply at 110 - 120% output all the time. They
typically also have an overtemp protection, but make sure that you are
not giving them a short unhappy life by constant pushing them to the
edge of their operational environment.
It is relatively simple to add a small circuit to measure current and
affect the 2.5V voltage reference to throttle back the supply at a lower
current than its overcurrent protection limit.
Hope this gives some ideas,

I am looking to upgrade my truck to lithium and I'm investigating
charging options. I decided to test out a Meanwell SP-480-48. I found
a brand new one on Ebay for $90. According to the spec sheet
(http://www.meanwell.com/webapp/product/search.aspx?prod=sp-480) they
are adjustable from 41 - 56V. This fits within the range I use on my
48V motorcyle where I currently charge to 54.6 volts, as well as half my
proposed 96 volt pack for my truck which I think I will want to charge
to 49.8 volts. The thought is to set the voltage where I want the pack
to end up and just let it charge. I will test this on my bench to make
sure I'm happy with the results.
If I am happy with the results, I am then concerned with two items if I
want to make an onboard charger for my truck out of two of these.
First, is inrush current. It does not appear these are built to be
constantly reconnected to Line voltage as the spec sheet indicates they
have a typical inrush current of 20 amps on 115v AC. So I would need to
design a simple inrush limiter, automated would be preferred, although a
simple switch with a resistor wired across it is not out of the
question. Any suggestions on simple automated inrush circuits? My
second concern is that I doubt these are meant to travel. If I were to
crack it open and take a look at the guts, what would be typical things
to look for in order to ruggedize this for a mobile life. Would it be
easier to be sure that it is mounted in a dry ventilated space with some
kind of rubber mounting or to actually try to protect the components on
the board itself.

Re: [EVDL] Electron Automotive - Any experiences?

2016-09-08 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
Hi Michael,
Yep, a lot of manufacturers will not touch a vehicle that is salvage if
they can avoid it, remember Otmar buying a crashed Model S?
So, I typically count on being on my own when doing this - make sure you
have the service docs and the means to read and reset codes from the
car.
Often enough it is simply an airbag controller telling that it has
detected a crash or it is detecting a missing sensor or squib
or anything else that you may have missed, some vehicles even detect
issues such as an unexpected brake pressure (if the vehicle was powered
while you were replacing brake pads and it detected that you pushed the
old pads back in, to make space for the new pads, sending oil back to
the brake controller, it will throw and remember a code, as I noticed on
my 2005 Prius).
Simple codes like brake or missing sensor input is usually solved by
making sure everything is in normal operational state and then resetting
the controller. Hard codes like an Airbag controller detecting a
collision are not user resettable, you either have to replace the
controller and hope that the VIN of the car is not stored in the
controller, or you have to open the controller, read the memory, wipe
the hard code string from the dump and write it back into memory and
then hope it will have forgotten the previous event. There are "airbag
controller reset services" on Ebay, charging around $50 for this.
But it simply all starts with having a code reading that connects to the
OBD bus and shows what the car is complaining about, so you have an idea
if you can solve this yourself or not.

Hope this helps,

What are the codes exactly? some are specific, others tend to be systematic.
If systematic, replacing a damaged component can correct several codes. If
specific, then it favors the dealers sensor replacement model.

[EVDL] Tesla driver fatally slams into tree in central Dutch town (Baarn.nl)> (no-auton)

2016-09-08 Thread brucedp5 via EV

Driver dies as Tesla slams into tree in central Dutch town
September 7, 2016

The 53-year-old driver of a Tesla Model S electric car died Wednesday when
the vehicle smashed into a tree in the central Dutch town of Baarn and burst
into flames, police and firefighters said.

Police are investigating the cause of the early morning accident in the town
40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Amsterdam and Tesla said in a
statement it is helping.

"Technical personnel are on the scene, and we are working with the
authorities to establish the facts of the incident and offer our full
cooperation," said the automaker based in Palo Alto, California. "We are
deeply saddened to hear that this accident involved a fatality. We will
share our findings as soon as possible following the investigation."

Ronald Boer, a spokesman for emergency services, said in a telephone
interview that firefighters did not immediately recover the man's body
because of fears that emergency service workers could be electrocuted.

"The car was so badly damaged that the firefighters could not operate its
security systems," he said.

Boer said it was not immediately clear if the driver was using the car's
autopilot system.
Autopilot is a semi-autonomous driving system that uses cameras, radar and
computers to spot objects in front of the car and stop it if there is a
danger of a collision. Tesla says it is a driver assist system and the human
driver must be ready to take control at any time.

New Koch-Funded Campaign to Kill the Electric Car and Squash Clean Energy
August 30, 2016 Kevin Grandia

With reports out that every month so far in 2016 has been the hottest on
record, it seems a little unbelievable that even the oil-rich Koch Brothers
would have the audacity to launch a new multimillion dollar campaign to kill
clean energy initiatives and promote the use of fossil fuels that are at the
heart of the climate change crisis.

But launch they have in the from of a new organization called Fueling U.S.
Forward — a cheeky double entendre presumably meant to inspire both national
and personal pride in the glories of oil and gas.

In launching the Fueling U.S. Forward at the Red State Gathering in Denver,
Colorado, the group’s President and CEO, Charles Drevna told the audience
that, “[w]e’ve got to take this to the emotional and personal level. Oil and
natural gas, they’re not the fuels of the past and maybe the present or a
necessary evil. They are the future.”

Fossil fuels just might have been the future if wasn’t for that pesky
greenhouse gas they emit, trapping more and more heat in our atmosphere and
causing unprecedented environmental disasters like the catastrophic flooding
we are seeing this week in Louisiana.

But someone like Charles Drevna appears not willing to accept this reality
and instead will look to use Fueling U.S. Foward to battle back against
State and Federal regulations aiming to boost new clean energy solutions.
The most insidious part of Drevna’s plan is to attempt once again kill the
electric car. The renowned 2006 documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car?
explored the idea that it was the fossil fuel industry and the U.S. auto
sector that led a stealth campaign to ensure the electric vehicles never
took hold in the marketplace ...

Flash forward 10 years and we now know the answer to that question more
clearly than ever. It will be the Koch Brothers, Charles Drevna and their
network of think tanks, with Fueling U.S. Forward at the helm, who if
successful will kill the electric car this time around. However, I suspect
Drevna and his oil-soaked backers will find a very different state of public
opinion today than they would have a decade ago. Ten years ago, the electric
car seemed a novelty and its necessity was not considered as imperative
given there was much less attention paid by the public to the issue of
climate change.

But that was then.

Today, with charismatic leaders like Elon Musk behind his hot-selling Tesla
electric cars, and a public more aware than ever about the disastrous
impacts of climate change that are no longer theory, but playing out in
America’s backyards, the Koch’s Fueling U.S. Forward has a very real risk of
flying back in their faces with a resounding smack.

Let’s hope so.

The fifth annual Hardin Park Cruise-in will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, from
10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Hardin Park in Greeneville.

The event's featured vehicle will be the Defiant EV3 Roadster, an
all-electric, retro-looking auto cycle, according to a news release.

The brainchild of John McMillan of Morristown, this purpose-built
three-passenger vehicle favors the early 1930s Ford Model A's, but with a
three-wheeled design.

The roadster holds the distinction of being invited by NASA as a featured
entry at the 2016 Earth Day Observance, a three-day event held at Cape
Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center and Orlando's Lake Eola Park. It was also
shown at the Knoxville Annual Car Show.

Cruise-in Chairman Kendall Bowers pointed out that National Drive Electric
Week is September 10-18. "Having this all-electric roadster on display at
our show is quite an honor and certainly falls right in line with this
national observance," Bowers said.

The cruise-in is co-sponsored by the Greeneville Department of Parks &
Recreation and two Greeneville-based car clubs -- the Ridge Runners and Davy
Crockett Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America.

It is open to all cars, trucks, bikes and farm tractors. Registration will
be $10 for entrants. The general public will be admitted at no charge. Food,
games and music will be on site.
Trophies for best club participation and park manager's choice will be
presented. Dash plaques will be provided to the first 100 entrants.

Various door prizes will be presented throughout the day. Cash prizes will
be awarded with a grand prize of $100. Vendor spaces will be available at a
cost of $25.
Funds derived from the event go to various charitable organizations.

Spectator parking will be at Hal Henard Elementary School, 425 Vann Road.
Entrance to the park for those wishing to enter vehicles, plus those seeking
handicapped parking, will be at 50 Magnolia Drive, just off East Vann Road.
Although the park exit is normally via Magnolia Drive, it will be changed to
an entrance for participants and handicapped parking during this event. A
handicapped vehicle registration tag or placard will be required before
admittance is allowed to the handicapped parking area.

For more information, including space for vendors, please call one of the
following: Tony Bible at 423-639-4442, Kendall Bowers at 423-639-5819, or
Herb Plemons at 423-306-5751.
