Re: [EVDL] Suspicious calb cell

2018-02-09 Thread George Tyler via EV
Sounds reasonable, but surely the charge current is much less than the
discharge, so voltage drop on discharge will triggrer low charge cutoff
for the pack long before this becomes an issue with charging? I have had
problems with high self discharge on headway cells, still within spec of
5% per month, but even at 5% it is enough to cause serious problems when
others are zero, unless it is charged often.

On 08-Feb-18 3:26 AM, Steve Clunn via EV wrote:

I've seen this a few times and not had any luck with warranting cells from
the company. One thing I have not seen mentioned that I believe might be
happening is that as these batteries get a little age on them and their
internal resistance goes up when they are charging their BMS starts
shunting current before everyone in the pack is charged and that one cell
starts to fall behind the others as the BMS shunts current which decreases
its amp hours in that cell. Which BMS are you using? I have wired another
cell in parallel with the offending stinker to fix the problem. Steve Clunn

International tourists visiting New Zealand could be hitting the roads in
electric campervans within two years if a new electric vehicle trial proves
successful.

Auckland-based company Jucy Rentals will trial a full-electric Nissan
E-NV200 campervan with the help of two overseas tourists.

During their journey, two visiting French students will travel thousands of
kilometres throughout the North Island in a prototype Jucy campervan,
powered only by electricity.

The tourists plan to visit about 30 destinations in the North Island over
three-weeks.

Jucy CEO Tim Alpe says the company aims to introduce a new category of
electric vehicle to its fleet to meet growing demand from millennial
tourists.

“Electric vehicles are the future of the Jucy campervan fleet and this trial
is the ideal platform to test our product offering for customers.

“This market segment in particular wants more environmentally-sustainable
travel options. At the same time this gives our tourists more choice and
cheaper running costs.”

Alpe says further expansion of the programme will need additional investment
in charging infrastructure and vehicles that can travel further distances.

“Campervans are the perfect vehicle to be electrically powered as tourists
tend to drive during the day and can then recharge overnight at their
campground.

“One of the biggest barriers we will face in the short term is lack of
infrastructure to support EV charging.

“We are working with camping grounds to introduce suitable facilities for
overnight charging but there is also a need to bring in rapid chargers on
the roads between main centres.

“At the same time, there are range limitations of the vehicles that need to
be overcome to ensure tourists can travel long distances across the country,
without the need to constantly recharge their battery.

“Our future as a sustainable tourist market will be short-lived if our
customer experience is impacted by the range their vehicle can travel each
day.”

The company plans to introduce charging stations at their branches and
hotels across NZ and Australia. -Driven

]

FREMONT [CA] — Tesla will start moving 1,500 employees to new offices in
Fremont’s Ardenwood district this spring, marking a major expansion for the
maker of electric vehicles, the company said Tuesday.

Tesla already has about 10,000 employees in Fremont, primarily at the
company’s electric vehicle manufacturing plant.

“We are pleased to see Tesla expand its footprint in Fremont to include such
a significant office operation, taking advantage of policies the City
proactively enacted to support office development in Ardenwood,” Fremont
Mayor Lily Mei said in e-mailed comments.

The expansion demonstrates Tesla’s commitment to Fremont and its ongoing
investment in the East Bay City, the company said.

The green energy company said it plans to move employees to the Dumbarton
Circle sites starting in April.

“Tesla now joins several other major corporations with large facilities in
what’s becoming one of the region’s fastest growing employment hubs,” Mayor
Mei said.

In November, Facebook leased 190,000 square feet in the same Fremont
Ardenwood district where Tesla is expanding. Facebook leased two office
buildings.

The move to the Fremont office complex will increase Tesla’s staff
collaboration by housing several departments under one roof, rather than
across multiple sites in the Bay Area, Tesla said.

The offices will locate employees roughly 11 miles from the company’s
vehicle factory and about 16 miles from its headquarters in Palo Alto.

Energy, sales, service and marketing workers, along with general and
administrative employees, will be housed at Tesla’s new Fremont offices, the
company stated. Some of the employees are former SolarCity workers who will
relocate from San Mateo. Tesla completed a $2 billion purchase of SolarCity
in 2016.

Tesla leased the offices at 6800 Dumbarton Circle and 6900 Dumbarton Circle
in Fremont. The buildings are owned by development firm Peery Arrillaga,
Alameda County property records show.

Together, the buildings total roughly 230,000 square feet.

The building at 6800 Dumbarton Circle totals about 116,000 square feet,
while the 6900 Dumbarton Circle office building totals 114,000 square feet.

Fremont and beyond.

“I’m tickled and excited that Tesla is expanding its presence in Fremont,”
said state Sen. Bob Wieckowski, a Democrat whose Alameda County district
includes Fremont.

Tesla has undertaken a major renovation of the two buildings. The work
included clearing out much of the insides of the structures.

Fremont has been Tesla’s manufacturing home since 2010, when the vehicle
maker bought the shuttered NUMMI auto factory that once was operated as a
joint venture between General Motors and Toyota Motor.

“Several Fremont mayors, including Mayor Mei, have worked to make Ardenwood
an area where you could have more tech and manufacturing companies locate
and expand,” Wieckowski said.

In recent years, Fremont’s strategy in Ardenwood was geared specifically to
lure companies from other tech hubs in the Bay Area that have become crowded
or saddled with fast-rising office rents.

“The city rezoned this district precisely to address strong demand for
office space in such close proximity to the Peninsula and improved commutes
for many,” Mei said.

Re: [EVDL] Fast Charging... (Flywheel?)

2018-02-09 Thread Haudy Kazemi via EV
Tesla does load balancing and load limiting at its superchargers. Although most
of their stations are rated at 120, 135, or 145 kW, they usually deliver less
based on these factors:

-utility ordered power limits. Drivers see this when their low SoC cars start
out with high kW and in under a minute that drops into the 60s. Presumably
Tesla is on a rate plan that requires load curtailment when the utility asks
for it.

-equipment overheating of either the superchargers themselves or charging
handles. Sometimes drivers switch station stalls in an attempt to work around
this.

-shared power between two charging stalls. Earliest car gets priority. Reminder
goes to second car. Stalls are labeled so drivers can avoid using the paired
stall if they so desire.

-battery BMS. The BMS limits charge rates. Owner gathered info says factors
include battery SoC, battery model (kWh rating), version (v1/v2/etc), chemistry
(silicon added or not), age (time/days/months), usage (lifetime kWh in/out),
health (usable energy vs design energy), temperature (above 40-50 F, below
90?), and probably other factors.

Some these same things have been done with certain OpenEVSE builds.

Robert is right. A flywheel in a vehicle has to be gimballed (like a
gyroscope) so it can remain upright no matter how the car moves. Its
bearing also have to be strong enough to handle bumps and potholes.
That's an additional complication, as the flywheel is by definition heavy.

Flywheels also have the problem of being able to dump *all* of their
stored energy in a moment (KABOOM!) if something goes wrong. Extreme
measures need to be taken to protect against this.

Flywheels make far more sense for fixed installations. They don't need
to be gimballed, or handle shock or vibration (short of an earthquake).
They can be be buried, to safely contain the debris in case of a failure.

But, an expensieve high-tech flywheel solution probably isn't needed for
peak energy storage in a fast charging station. Batteries are going to
be cheaper and safer. Batteries that are old, used, or have too low a
performance for in-car use will still work fine. Even traditional
lead-acid batteries would work, as size and weight don't matter for a
stationary application. There are lots of industrial-strength lead-acids
that last for decades can happily deliver 1000+ amps.

Re: [EVDL] Fast Charging... (Flywheel?)

2018-02-09 Thread robert winfield via EV
There are a few technical problems with flywheel energy storage and moving
vehicles. There is a term called "precession"It's why a gyroscope stands up when
spinning and doesn't fall over. If you push it over it resists and pushes
back.If you force it over it goes in a different direction. It "wants" to point
in 1 direction.Put a 70,000 revolution per minute gyroscope in a car. You can
drive in a straight line only. If you try to turn, you cannot because you have
25+ kilowatts saying otherwise. The car will "precess" around the gyroscope (ie
roll over slowly or violently)Then the gyroscope will slip off its bearings and
catastrophic disassembleThe new term is RUDWe had an ultracentrifuge spinning
70,000 rpm, it was a pyramidal shaped cylinder that exploded. It "slamdanced"
for about 20 minutes it's container , about the size of a refrigerator, hitting
walls, bleeding off energy.I think gyroscopes may be good for stationary
storage, although Beacon energy, that was pushing it also had an explosion of
its energy storage. You also have to continually recertification the centrifuges
and take out of use as they still have limited life spans, not good for cars
