I have 2 full Leaf packs in my truck.
Since my motor controller does both driving and charging (and regen, which
is essentially charging from the motor) there are no diodes, the two packs
are always in parallel. I did put a 200a fuse in each parallel string so
that a failure in one pack or a short in the controller, leading to
excessive current, would blow one or both of those fuses.

The Tata Motors Nano electric version aka the Jayem Neo EV has been spotted
in an undisclosed parking lot in Hyderabad. The electric Nano wore the
decals and graphics of Ola Cabs – one of the leading taxi services in India.
The latest entrant in the Ola Cab fleet also has a prominent 'Electric
Vehicle' tag on its side.

Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives first showcased the Neo EV at Auto Expo
2018. The car is manufactured under a joint-venture with Tata Motors and
will be initially offered only in the fleet market; Ola Cabs being the one
to get the first 200 units.

As per the agreement, Tata Motors will be supplying body shells of the Nano
(i.e. without engine and transmission) to Jayem Automotives, who in turn
adds a 48V electric motor and the drive system. The motor, supplied by
Electra EV, is capable of making 17kW or 23bhp.

Electra EV makes the drivetrain components for the Tata Tigor EV. This
electric sedan was also showcased at Auto Expo 2018 and is not a
mass-production vehicle.

The electric avatar of the Nano does not carry any ‘Tata' badges, but only
‘Jayem' and ‘Neo' logos. Apart from that, there are no aesthetic changes
between the Neo EV and the regular Nano ...

Thoughts On The Tata Nano Electric Aka Jayem Neo EV

The Jayem Neo EV is one of the many electric vehicles to come to the Indian
market. The idea of an electric Nano has always been interesting and a few
people in India have even gone to make their own version of Nano EVs. In
addition to this, reports also suggest that Tata Motors is currently working
on an electric Nano with their branding.

The Orion plant will also produce Maven autonomous car.

General Motors Co. said will increase production of its Bolt
battery-electric vehicle this year in response to global demand, according
to 2017 sustainability report it released ahead of the company’s annual
shareholders meeting.

The Bolt EV is built at GM’s Orion Assembly plant in suburban Detroit.

GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra also said at least 20 new all-electric
vehicles will launch globally by 2023, and that GM is partnering with
utilities and governments to accelerate the growth of charging
infrastructure as it looks to deliver on its vision of an “all-electric,
emissions-free” future. “We believe the future is electric,” she said.

The sustainability report also highlighted the company’s mass-production
methods for autonomous vehicles, and GM announced that production versions
of its Cruise AV will be built at the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan, with
commercialization starting in 2019.

[image] GM's car-sharing service, Maven, continues to grow. The on-demand
access to vehicles is now in Canada's largest city, Toronto.

“We are in the midst of a transportation revolution as groundbreaking
technologies and evolving customer lifestyles transform our vehicles and how
we use them,” Barra said. “We have the right team, technology, partners,
manufacturing scale and mindset to lead this revolution.”

GM also pushing ahead in other areas. In response to increasing global
populations in urban areas, the Maven suite of shared mobility solutions has
expanded to capitalize on the growing popularity of car sharing and
ridesharing and is reducing congestion, Barra said.

Guided by the vision of a future with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero
congestion, the company is addressing societal and environmental challenges
while transforming the future of mobility, she said.

It would be better to divide that up between 3 parallel strings.

I think I'd also use a commoning diode and fuse per string. That way, a
failure in one string doesn't allow the other two strings to dump all
their power into it!

If your controller and charger can go up to 130V then use all 48 modules in 3
strings of 16.
I typically stop charging the Leaf pack at around 390-395V because no cell
should go above 4.12V for best longevity.
So divide by 3 and you get 130 – 132V max.

[EVDL] Job opening: salaried fabrication position on an EV racing team in Berkeley

2018-06-20 Thread Bill Woodcock via EV
I’ve got a shop in West Berkeley, working mostly on EV land-speed racing
(Bonneville and El Mirage) and some street cars, all steel bodies from the
‘30s, so far. We just lost one of our fabricators, and need to fill the
position. Ideally we’d like someone with a fair bit of automotive fabrication
experience, ideally with a racing background, who also understands at least the
basics of EVs. We’re mostly using Rinehart inverters and Siemens motors,
though there’s a fair bit of tinkering with other things. The guy we lost was
the only one with any suspension experience, so it would be nice to replace
that in the same person as well.

We don’t pay a lot, but that’s kind of par for the course in racing. Laid-back
environment, flexible hours (this position can be anywhere from full time to
half time), health insurance. Long-term stable (the guy who left had been here
seven years, the other two have been here more than ten years). Right by the
Ashby avenue exit off 880.

If you know anybody who’d be interested, please put them in touch with me.

Thanks,

-Bill

Need a couple of suggests to source a replacement for my exhausted battery
pack:

1986 VW Cabriolet

NetGain Impulse9 DC motor

Curtis 1231C Controller (120vdc & 500A max)

Old battery pack: 16ea, 6v in series, 200AH Led-Acid batteries (96vdc
nominal)

The prior performance was satisfactory for my rural use. Range, when new,
about 50 miles. Speed: easy 60 mph.

I would like to upgrade to lithium, if practical, and maybe add a little
range/speed.

What would be the best way to go and keep the cost down?

Thanks

Mike Simmons, owner of the U-Haul rental business in downtown Kingman,
points out the Demi X-1 electric research car built by Dreisbach
ElectroMotive of Santa Barbara, Calif., that will be donated to the Route 66
Electric Car Museum at the Powerhouse Visitor Center. The Demi X-1 set a
land speed record of 210 mph at El Mirage Dry Lake in 1983. Simmons said
it’s “pretty cool” to have the cars donated to the Kingman museum.

The inhalation of exhaust gases from diesel vehicles is a significant health
risk for mine workers. Often lung and respiratory diseases are the result of
many years of underground activity. Emission-free electromobility can reduce
the risks - a new trend to which the globally operating specialist for
mining and tunneling vehicles, Emsbürener Hermann Paus Maschinenfabrik GmbH,
now also devotes. The first electric and hybrid vehicles from the
cooperation with the company Danfoss Mobile Electrification will be
delivered to customers shortly. For more information see the IDTechEx report
on on electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles in mining.

In Canada, the use of diesel vehicles in first mines has already been
banned. Paus is now offering for the first time a universal vehicle for
mining as a hybrid or electric variant, which corresponds to the trend
towards locally emission-free underground mining. With its compact
dimensions and a payload of 1.2 tons, it is particularly suitable for
passenger and material transport in mines.

The electric drive train system EDITRON is supplied by Danfoss Mobile
Electrification for the all-wheel-drive off-highway vehicle MinCa 5.1 in two
variants:

 - As a pure electric drive with 50 kilowatt electric motor and a battery
system with 50 kilowatt hours for 3-4 hours of work

 - As a hybrid drive with 50 kilowatt electric motor, a range extender and a
battery sys- tem with 20 kilowatt hours for 12 hours of work

In addition to the health protection of mine workers, customers based in,
for example, North and South America, Russia or Australia benefit from up to
50 percent lower fuel costs for construction site work. In addition, the
abandonment of diesel vehicles generally improves air quality - so the cost
of ventilation systems can also be minimized.

Electric Vehicles and Autonomous Vehicles in Mining

The universal vehicle MinCa 5.1 is produced in Emsbüren and has been on the
market for two years as a diesel vehicle. The electric and hybrid version,
which was developed and tested in cooperation with Paus and Danfoss in
recent months, is now going into series production. The first copies of the
four-wheel drive vehicle will be delivered to customers of the two companies
later this year.
