In the passenger seats were a Tesla representative and a reporter, their bodies pushed back into the seats as the silent car suddenly gained speed. In the driver’s seat was Assemblyman John Armato, D-Atlantic, an experienced drag racer. But racing experience wasn’t necessary to test drive electric cars at Environment New Jersey’s “Ride and Drive” event, just an interest in the vehicles. Elected officials were particularly targeted to drive the cars in the hopes they might convert some or all public fleets to electric, said Environment New Jersey Executive Director Doug O’Malley. “Atlantic City is one of the most well-visited towns,” said Mayor Frank Gilliam. Gilliam said government should be leading the way to encourage more use of electric vehicles, he said, for both cleaner air and — especially on a barrier island — to combat climate change and the flooding it brings. Last week the Senate Environment and Energy Committee advanced a bill to jumpstart electric vehicle purchasing and charging stations in the state, which O’Malley said is desperately needed. Atlantic County Freeholder Caren Fitzpatrick, who called herself a “total car chick” who jumps at the chance to test drive a new car, said she will introduce a resolution in support of the legislation at a freeholder meeting soon. “We have to get rid of range anxiety,” said Fitzpatrick, adding that some people won’t buy electric cars until there are more charging stations that they can county on. “It has torque,” said Armato after the test drive of the $80,000 performance Tesla. The basic Model 3 starts at $39,000, said Zora Berman, an energy adviser at Tesla Cherry Hill. Gilliam got his feet wet driving the Chevy Volt [pih], the personal car of ChargEVC CEO Pam Frank, in a race against Assemblyman Vince Mazzeo driving a Tesla. While the Tesla was faster, the Chevy Volt ... hit 60 mph in about 7 seconds. “This beats most cars at a traffic light,” said Frank of her two-year-old Volt, a premium model for which she paid about $42,000 (minus the federal tax credit of $7,500). “And there are no tune ups. All those things you do to service a gas vehicle are gone.” A basic Volt goes for about $35,000, she said — minus the tax credit. And there is no New Jersey sales tax on electric cars, she said. There are no moving parts to the motors that power electric cars have, said Berman, adding that’s why they don’t need the usual maintenance of gas-powered engines. “It’s a different kind of maintenance, mostly about software,” Berman said. [EVDL] EVLN: Lightning-struck plugin> incapacitated by an en-lightning experience
https://wheelgun.wordpress.com/2018/10/22/what-happens-when-an-electric-car-is-hit-by-lightning/ What Happens When An Electric Car Is Hit By Lightning? October 22, 2018 Zendo Deb OK, this one was in a garage, plugged into the grid when the house got hit by lightning. Close enough. Electri-Fried Fusion [pih https://wattsupwiththat.com/2018/10/21/electri-fried-fusion/ ]. The storm was in September. The car had been parked in the detached garage and was plugged into the grid. But wait, wouldn’t you think a modern electric car would be designed with a built-in circuit breaker for electrical storms like this? Guess not! He immediately drove his electric car straight to the Ford dealer and said something was wrong. That was SIX long weeks ago and no end in sight. Turns out the Fusion had an en-lightning experience and is completely incapacitated. Car insurance doesn’t know how to deal with electric cars that have been struck by lightning. They want pictures. Really? What does an electric car demobilized by lightning look like? Well, the same as an electric car that hasn’t been struck by lightning. Except none of the 2 separate battery compartments work now. It turns out the lightning strike blew out the electrical circuit boards. After weeks of back and forth with the insurance company, things started progressing. Repair work is underway. There is a needed part – a circuit board – that won’t be available until January 15, 2019. Wait, the car went into the Dealer’s shop in early September and repairs will take over five months? Insurance won’t total the car, and nobody knows how much it will cost to repair this modern, energy efficient, low CO2 emissions electric car. The future is stupid. [comments] 3 thoughts on “What Happens When An Electric Car Is Hit By Lightning?” SiGraybeard says: October 22, 2018 at 11:40 It surprises me that the car isn’t designed with surge protectors for the recharge port. For a cheap appliance in your house, that’s how it’s done, but an electric car is a major purchase with very odd power requirements, and to expect the buyer to put something like a giant UPS on the line for the car is odd. It should come with a warning label about power surges. Leaving out lightning protection on power lines is something that simply doesn’t happen in the Hi-Rel world. Car manufacturers have to get their act together. They’re moving into a different world. Zendo Deb says: October 22, 2018 at 14:40 For a simple surge, they work. For a lightning strike, only grounded lightning arresters work, and even they don’t work all the time. The current is so high… I have surge suppressors on everything, but a lightning strike on a tree in my neighbors yard took out a computer power supply, an LCD monitor, and a pair of logitech speakers, and a chromecast’s power supply. It didn’t fry the TV or the bluray player, which was expected since I hadn’t looked at TV for about 6 months before the strike. SiGraybeard says: October 22, 2018 at 19:34 While direct strike can be designed for, most people are willing to take the bet on the stuff that’s much cheaper and will survive 75 % of the cases. Consumer electronics is generally starting from the awful point of no protection at all. I don’t want to minimize the problem, it’s just that other parts of industry know how to design for this, and the car industry apparently doesn’t. In mid-summer of ’17, our TV set was taken out by an induced field from a strike that hit within a block or so. We think out external HDMI switch picked up the field and died by itself, which then over volted the TV. Nothing else in the house was hurt. Ground is relative. Aircraft don’t carry ground rods – they use the airframe. Everything we built played through a strike, including radios that played through having their antennas hit. The typical commercial aircraft is hit by lightning once a year – several times if they fly in the tropics. Every so often, someone catches a photo. If the avionics industry took the approach of that Ford Fusion, too many planes would be grounded. Meanwhile, nonelectric vehicles will be gradually banned from transporting tourists to the base camp, according to the commission. The base camp of Qomolangma, known as Mount Everest in the West, attracts thousands of tourists each year. It is at the center of the Qomolangma Nature Reserve, which covers more than 3 million hectares. Tang Wu, director of the county's tourism development commission, said the county initiated the plan a few years ago, and a type of electric vehicle has been tested for a year. "The introduction of electric vehicles in the Qomolangma tourism site is one of the government's environmental protection concerns," said Tang, adding that tourism agencies' vehicles and private cars had negative environmental effects. The impacts include exhaust emissions, a rise in temperature and safety hazards from drivers unfamiliar with road conditions and tourists who get lost, he said. The Qomolangma Base Camp saw more than 140,000 tourists last year, according to the commission. "In peak season, the camp welcomes an average of 200 to 400 vehicles every day, and only a few vehicles during the low season period," said Tang. "The camp receives an average of 20,000 vehicles every year." A detailed plan is not yet available, and the number of electric vehicles that will be put into use remains unknown. But Tang said: "We will seek proper solutions for banned vehicles in the county. We will make sure the banned vehicles have a safe parking lot, and the tourists will be transported to the scenic sites safely and in a timely fashion." The county has been making great efforts to preserve the Qomolangma area as a pure place, and it has hired a professional cleaning company to deal with waste in the county. "Recycling bags are handed out to tourists who enter the scenery zone," Tang said. Other measures include announcements near tourism sites' entrance gates advocating environmental protection and providing environmental awareness messages along with tips to stay warm and hats. The county also has set up four eco-friendly toilets along the roadside and near the Qomolangma Base Camp, and many local Tibetans have been employed as cleaners as well. It's not only the local government that has been acting. Tibet's tourism vehicle rental companies also are considering launching electric vehicles in the market. Duan Ziqing, general manager of Lhasa Xueyue Mingzhu Tourism Vehicle Transportation Co, said more than 100 electric shuttle buses from his company are being put into use in the region's Namtso Lake scenic site. Duan said his company did not yet have a detailed plan of when to launch the electric vehicles, but he said his company would discuss it with the Dingri county government. If I'm remembering correctly they did lock the chip so you can't just read out the firmware from a working unit. If you could I would, I do have one. But, if someone happens to have firmware in an email then I can flash that firmware onto a board. I just don't have any DMOC445 firmware files to flash. Or worse, a whole queue of people. But instead of waiting your turn, now you can veer over to the beach and drive straight into the drink. That is, if you’re riding in the Electric E4 from Sealegs [ https://www.sealegsrecreational.com/sealegs-electric.html ]. The company has been crafting all variety of amphibious vehicle for the last 13 years using their patented land-to-sea system, but this new electric model is a reason to swap out your current outboard. You can watch it in action above, but here’s the gist of it: in the water, it’s an almost-24-foot outboard vessel that can hit just about 46 MPH; on land, it’s a three-wheeler that tops out at 6.2 MPH (all the better, as everyone will want to snap a photo of you riding dirty down to the waterfront). The amphibious transition happens with the push of the button, the brushless hub motor wheels lifting up to lock against the hull or lowering down in shallow water to drive back ashore. “With Sealegs Electric E4 we have made our amphibious system 33% faster, 60% quieter and 50% more powerful,” says Maurice Bryham, Sealegs Founder and Chief Technology Officer. That electric system includes a 7 kWh lithium battery, which charges via a plug, regenerative braking on land and the outboard motor on water. Other features include space for up to eight people, a sleek "glass bridge" with touch display, sunbed on the bow and some satisfyingly futuristic lighting details. No word on price, which is most likely due to the fact that it’s not rolling out of Sealegs facilities until Summer 2019/2020. Wait a minute, “Summer” 2019/2020? Ah yes, Sealegs is based in New Zealand, so for us that means next winter. However, it is one heck of an electric performance beast that shows how the electric drivetrain continues to disrupt the gasoline-based racing humdrum. After more than a decade of electric racing on land, sea, and now air, I never tire of seeing electric drivetrains advance into what were once gasoline-only sports. Remember how many laughed, snickered, and downright put down electric vehicles years ago without having driven one? Thankfully, those years are somewhat behind us and a 2,200 hp (1656 kW) electric Cigarette [ http://www.cigaretteracing.com/eng/SP_amgelec.php ] is yet another assault and proof that nothing can stop an electric motor, so far. “Two independent powertrains: they are symmetrically mounted on the left and right side. Each of the two powertrains has 6 compact permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors with a maximum power of 185 hp (138 kW) and maximum torque of 184 ft?lb (250 Nm) each; so the boat provides a combined maximum output of 2220 hp (1656 kW) and maximum torque of 2213 ft?lb (3000 Nm).The electric motors are taken from the SLS AMG Electric Drive.” The Cigarette AMG Electric Drive is rightfully impressive on paper. And if you’ve watched a Cigarette race or were lucky enough to ride in one, these boats are the Formula 1 of the sea. This adventure started with the Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE as a collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing. After 11 years of testing, the Miami-based boat manufacturer showed impressive results. Designed from the ground up, the Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE uses much of the eventual Mercedes-AMG Project ONE supersports car [ https://cleantechnica.com/2017/11/30/head-head-comparison-tesla-roadster-vs-mercedes-project-one/ ]. But while we only see the Mercedes-AMG EV at car shows, Cigarette Racing didn’t wait to make this vehicle a reality on water. This 9th special edition boat is 51’ 5” in length and features an increased beam of 9’ 6” for 6 passengers seated comfortably. You can see more specs here [ http://www.cigaretteracing.com/eng/SP_amgelec.php ]. More seats are good and more surface space is even better. The Cigarette Racing 515 Project ONE has 30% more surface area compared to its existing 50’ Marauder. It can reach a top speed of 140 mph. All of this rests on an optimized composite structure made of carbon fiber, Kevlar, and e-glass. Making Sense Of An Extremely Powerful Electric Cigarette Okay, I promise, that was the last time I joked about e-cigarettes, but the question remains: What is the importance and significance of such an EV powerhouse? We can argue that this is proof Cigarette Racing is looking to the future and planning for it. Partnering with Mercedes to use its Formula 1 experience and the eventual Mercedes-AMG Project ONE supersports EV research makes perfect sense for such a high-performance electric racing boat. Most races are switching to electricity. Every step of the way is fun and inspiring. I regret that we are still waiting to see the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE EV get out the door. But at least, Cigarette Racing didn’t wait — to the tune of $2 million a pop. Frankly, if I had $2 million to spare, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one. But if I had money, I’d tell you what I’d do… [© cleantechnica.com] + https://electrek.co/2018/10/22/audi-e-tron-delay-software-lg-price-batteries/ Audi e-tron slightly delayed due to software change, LG reportedly increasing price of batteries Oct. 22nd 2018 Audi has confirmed that its e-tron electric SUV has been delayed by about 4 weeks ... At first glance, Humanetics Innovative Solutions Inc. looks like it has a pretty sweet business model. The suburban Detroit company is the world’s largest maker of crash-test dummies, the steel-and-vinyl humanoids stuffed with electronics that gauge how a car crash could injure a human body. The company enjoys a global market share exceeding 70 percent, and its dummies can cost as much as $1 million apiece. Regulators in the U.S. and other countries effectively require Humanetics customers to buy at least some of its products. With a setup like that, you might say, even a dummy could make a fortune. This makes Humanetics Chief Executive Officer Christopher O’Connor laugh, though for a different reason than you might think. He’d much rather discuss the implications of 3D printers and driverless cars than how Humanetics, or any dummy maker, turns a profit. “I’ve said to myself, if I had $10 million, I wouldn’t invest in this business,” O’Connor says. “I love it, but the reality is, you’re not going to make a ton of money. The margins are always going to be tight.” The business of making and selling crash dummies is odd, and not only because it involves faceless mannequins acting as proxies for the mangled and the dead. Dummy makers spend years and millions of dollars developing products that customers profess to admire but decline to buy. Vehicles and drivers have changed dramatically, but the model of dummy used in many government-required crash tests has been around for four decades. The industry sells a mere 200 to 250 dummies in a decent year and generated $111 million in revenue globally in 2016, according to market-research company Technavio. At the Humanetics headquarters in Farmington Hills, Mich., and its factory in Huron, Ohio, cubicles and worktables are littered with flesh-colored dummy heads, feet, and hands, and parts carts hold shiny aluminum elbows, knees, and clavicles. They’ll be assembled by some of Humanetics’ 750 employees into anthropomorphic devices of various genders and ages. Information gleaned from dummies has helped automakers develop air bags, advanced seat belts, penetration-resistant glass, and energy-absorbing frames. Dummy performance in crash tests is central to the popular vehicle safety rating, which influences sales. Given all this, it seems like Humanetics’ continual improvement of its product ought to produce robust growth. The problem is that dummies, unlike humans, don’t die, though a decade ago the industry almost did. In Volvo Car Group’s cavernous crash facility in Gothenburg, Sweden, eight banks of 4,000-watt lamps shine on a V60 station wagon as technicians scurry about making final preparations for a side-impact crash test. A bank of electronic measuring equipment rests on the hood. Two dummies wait, one in the front seat, the other directly behind. The techs disperse. The garage is silent but for a voice on an intercom counting down from 10. At zero, a flat barrier accelerates toward the car at 31 mph and T-bones it. The scene is placid one second and then suddenly, jarringly violent—as in a real collision. Then the serious work begins, much of it involving the collection and analysis of data from the sensors inside the dummies: Did a rib deflect far enough that it could have fractured? Might the intrusion of the driver’s door have punctured an internal organ? Volvo runs as many as 10 full-scale crash tests a week, including head-on collisions, lateral and angular impacts, and outdoor tests in which vehicles are run into a roadside ditch to see how the bodies—that is, the dummies’ bodies—are tossed around inside. The company owns about 100 dummies, some brand-new, some as old as 40. A number of Volvo’s Humanetics dummies represent a 5-foot-9-inch, 172-pound male, which at one point was a statistically average man. (Said man is now pushing 200.) Volvo also has dummies that stand in for larger men, small women, and children of various ages. Then there’s a replica moose—collisions with Bullwinkle are common in Sweden—that resembles an oil drum tipped sideways and propped on four stilts. Some of the early crash dummies, in the mid-20th century, were human cadavers flung down elevator shafts and hogs impaled on steering columns. There were live humans, too. In 1954, U.S. Air Force Colonel John Stapp, a physician studying how deceleration affected military pilots in crashes, rode a rocket sled at 632 mph on a New Mexico test track. He didn’t hit anything, but blood filled his eyes as vessels burst

Again, those were my impressions; others may have had different experiences. I got the distinct impression that with the UMOC and DMOC range, Solectria and Azure intentionally further limited what their users could learn and do. IIRC they even passworded the inverters' computer interface, which wasn't done on the Brusa inverters. If you wanted your drive reconfigured, their answer was usually "ship it to us and we'll do it for you." For a fee, of course. But they sure did make nice AC drives. Re: [EVDL] Azure DMOC445 Programming
The new one almost certainly had only the test firmware on it - that's how they came new. You have to use the Azure tools to flash the proper firmware onto it. Yes, this is not going to be pleasant. Unfortunately, while I know how to flash DMOCs, I don't believe that I've got DMOC445 firmware to flash onto your board. It might be possible to flash DMOC645 firmware onto your DMOC445 but I don't know what that would do.
