As mentioned, phone wire is not of consistent size or quality. As a result, its performace as a "fuse" is likely to be inconsistent. Maybe that's good enough; maybe not. You'll have to test it carefully to be sure. A few background details on fuses might help. A fuse "blows" when the metal reaches its melting temperature. That is a function of current, time, and ambient temperature. Onderdonk's equation provides a ROUGH approximation of the fusing current of a round uninsulated wire in still air. For copper, it is I = 0.148 A/T^0.5, where I = current in amps, A = cross sectional area in mils, and T = seconds. Any insulation on the wire drastically lowers the fusing current. Any airflow around the wire drastically increases the fusing current. Most metals have a high enough melting point that they can set fire to surronding materials. When the fuse opens, there may also be an arc. This is especially dangerous on high voltage DC, because the arc will not self-extinguish until it is very long! That's why commercial fuses are always in some fireproof package. Whatever you do, test, Test, TEST! -- The belief that there is only one truth, and that oneself is in possession of it, is the root of all evil in the world. Despite Norway’s hungry consumption of electric cars, the infrastructure to charge them has been sluggish to appear in the country’s northernmost regions, especially Finnmark County along the craggy Arctic coast. Things had gotten so bad for electric car owners that last March, Finn Helge Lund, a frustrated Tesla-driving resident of Kirkenes – the tiny town on the country’s border with Russia – shelled out nearly $3000 of his own money to install a public charging station himself. The move was meant to troll Varanger Kraft, the Finnmark-based municipal power company, and force it into taking up the e-car charging slack. The local mayor, Rune Rafaelsen – himself in the market for an electric car if only there was somewhere to charge it – had grown frustrated with the lack of options. Bellona, meanwhile, had launched its Arctic Electric Road project, spearheading an initiative with officials in Murmansk to beef up the charging infrastructure along highways leading into Russia out of Northern Scandinavia. But improved charging opportunities on the Russian side won’t do much good if e-car drivers in Norway have to push their cars across the border. Indeed, in a country where electric and hybrid car sales account for more than half of all vehicles sold – and where public policy makes the preference for emissions-free automobiles nearly a matter of law – the situation for Finnmark was getting a little awkward. But now things are finally starting to change. This week, on Christmas Eve, a charging station that can rapidly recharge two electric cars at a time was opened in Kirkenes. “The appearance of a high-speed charging station in our city is a real Christmas present,” Lund told Bellona this week – a gift that he and the other 25 electric car drivers in town can share. The 50-kilowatt charger, powered by the local hydroelectric plant and fitted with solar panels for the summer’s endless sun, can charge a car in 45 minutes – lopping hours off the charge times Lund and other local e-car drivers had grudgingly grown used to. The new charger sports three types of connections suitable for different kinds of electric cars. According Mayor Rafaelsen, the new station tops off three years of negotiations with Varanger Kraft, which had promised to open the new chargers as a pilot project before the New Year. Now, with the charger installed in a centrally located parking lot, the company has made good on its word. “I am very proud that we managed to realize this,” Rafaelson said during the unveiling of the station this week. “We are very pleased to give tourists coming to Kirkenes the opportunity to charge their own cars with local energy.” In Rafaelson’s accounting, the exploding popularity of electric cars in Norway took authorities in the country’s north by surprise. By the end of 2017, 54 percent of all cars sold in Norway were either electric or hybrid, marking the first time in any major driving economy that environmentally friendly auto sales outpaced the their gas and diesel driven counterparts. That’s put pressure on Finnmark County to catch up. More pressure came from across the border, in Murmansk, where a charger installed by Bellona at the city’s Park Inn hotel has started to draw a small flow of motorists passing through in electric cars. Russia’s northern capital even hosted an electric car rally last summer, drawing e-car drivers from Russia and Norway alike, each of whom drove more than 1,000 kilometers a piece to highlight the need for an Arctic e-car charging infrastructure. No wonder Finnmark was feeling a little left behind. But as Rafaelson tells it, the times have changed. “This is the beginning of a new era in Kirkenes,” he said. “Now we can offer electric vehicle charging services for all want it – and of those there will be more and more.” For a time, drivers can even charge up for free. A recent trend has popped up across the nation, called "ICEing" by some, where pickup owners park their vehicles across a line of Tesla Superchargers. This practice can strand Tesla owners who might be depending on the Supercharging station to top off their batteries to complete their journey. In a video posted by the YouTube channel Tesla Trip, they test if a Model X can tow a Chevy Silverado out of a Supercharger station and, handily for EV fanatics, the results are positive. In case you missed it, the Silverado is owned by a family member so no one's personal property was tampered with unknowingly. The Drive does not endorse towing or tampering with other's property. The Model X seems to tow the Silverado out of the way fairly effortlessly which should be no surprise to Tesla fans as the Model X has proved it's towing chops many times over. The Boring Company used a Model X to tow a claimed 250,000 pounds worth of rail cars full of muck out of one of its tunnels, and the electric SUV has also been used to help tow a stuck semi truck up a hill in snowy conditions. The "ICEing" of Superchargers [ http://www.thedrive.com/sheetmetal/17222/gentle-reminder-stop-parking-your-cars-in-electric-charging-stalls ], as Tesla owners call it, is not a new phenomenon but up until now it usually was only a car or two blocking the stalls. In the past few months, Tesla owners have reported packs of pickup trucks blocking charging stalls and even going as far to harass the EV drivers. In a recent post to the Tesla Motors subreddit, one user claims several truck owners took up a slew of stalls at a Supercharger and were shouting profanities at the Tesla owners attempting to charge their vehicles. These situations can be frustrating for Tesla owners who often have no clear solution or steps to have the trucks removed. Several states have enacted legislation which makes it illegal for conventional gas-powered vehicles to park in spots designated for EV charging but that doesn't always include a clause for having the vehicle towed. It's also difficult to discern who owns the Supercharger in certain cases but the property owners ultimately have the ability to work with towing companies to have the offending vehicles removed. Re: [EVDL] fusewires for 18650 cells
Best thing would be to just test them and be sure. But don't test with a 3" piece of the wire from end of battery to the other end, because that is not the same as testing a 3/4" piece. You will need a 3" piece of heavy wire and then just the 3/4" of the "fuse" wire to get a valid test. But trivial to do the test.
