Yeah, the original Leaf wouldn't ever initiate support of the 12v battery
unless you turned on the car.  Sounds like Nissan fixed this oversight in
later years.

For what it's worth, we have a 2011 with the original 12v battery. No 
problems so far. One thing to note is the car is always parked outside, 
so the small solar panel is presumably effective at keeping the battery 
charged.

of the computers. I noticed that the blue LED for the 12V charging now
comes on every 24h to maintain the aux battery, so apparently Nissan

Like pretty much all modern cars, there is a high standby load.  The bulk
of it is the security controller constantly pinging for the fob for the
"keyless" entry system.   If you aren't going to drive it much, consider a
disconnect switch on the 12V battery.   The original Leaf engineers
realized this was a problem and mounted a small solar panel in the back to
offset this on the SL models.

The other option as you mentioned is a battery tender.

I don't know about ghost loads, but how old is your 12v accessory 
battery? If it's still the original battery it's probably time to 
replace it.
