[EVDL] Selling my 94 Geo Metro Conversion

2023-07-15 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
Hello everyone,

Changing life circumstances have unfortunately necessitated me to sell my
beloved 1994 Geo Metro EV conversion. I will be moving to a location where
I will not have access to at-home charging in August and unfortunately the
range of this car makes it impractical to own without convenient access to
charging. I am not sure where to post my for-sale listing as the market for
these cars is somewhat limited - the form just seemed like a good place to
start. Hence, if anyone has any suggestions on how/where to sell my
conversion I would greatly appreciate it.

Specs are as follows:

- Traction Battery: 28 Nissan Leaf Gen 2 Battery Modules - pack has
degraded to about 7kwh at 80% state of charge. The modules are in a 14s2p
configuration (28s4p cell configuration; each module has 4 cells in a 2s2p
configuration) for a nominal pack voltage around 105 volts.
- HPEVS AC-35 with Curtis 1238-7501 controller. The car isn't super quick
on the accelerator but it is likely better than stock.
- BMS is a Thunderstruck/Dilithium Designs unit with one satelite unit -
the pack is split into two battery boxes - one under the hood and one in
the truck. There is a BMS in each battery box so you don't have the fire
hazard of balance wires running outside of battery boxes.
- Thunderstruck TSM2500 2.5KW charger - a unique feature about this charger
is that it allows you to set the charging current and voltage via
configuration software which is very useful if you decide to modify the
traction pack later on. Maximum output voltage is 130 volts. Charger is
wired to a standard J1772 charging port.
-Custom GUI that displays pack voltage, motor current, and estimates state
of charge. Also calculates driving efficiency and displays it in miles/kwh.
-I am estimating the range is about 40 miles with the battery at 100% state
of charge - my GUI says the range is 30-33 miles at 80% state of charge
during the summertime. I have gone on a 29 mile trip starting with a
battery at 80% and ending with it at about 5% so my display is pretty
accurate. Please note that this car does not have battery heaters so expect
the winter range to be about half of the summer range.
-Vehicle is located about 15 minutes away from Provo, Utah. It is licensed
and insured as an electric vehicle in the state of Utah so you won't have
to worry about taking it through that process.

Unfortunately, the list won't let me post pictures so the best I can do is
provide my EV album link: http://evalbum.com/5471

If interested, email me at nrc71...@gmail.com or give me a call/send me a
text at 385-224-0840. I can provide additional/more recent pictures and we
can start the conversation from there. The previous owner and I have put
$9k into it and I am asking $3000. The batteries alone are worth at least
$2k on ebay.

This is a fun car to drive and I am sad to see it go, but unfortunately
this will no longer be a practical car for me very soon.

[EVDL] Hummer EV

2022-04-21 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
Hi Everyone,

After reading up on the Hummer EV, it seems like it might be the
EV-equivalent of the ICE F-150. Engineering Explained did a video on it,
and he explained that any ICE vehicle getting better than 22 MPG is less
wasteful than the Hummer EVwhen battery manufacturing emissions are
accounted for. Yikes!

Am I the only one who thinks this new vehicle is a massive waste of energy?

Re: [EVDL] $7.5bn for ev charging across the US

2022-02-13 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
I think I much better way for the government to promote evs would be to get
rid of fossil fuel subsidies. This would increase the price of gas which
would undoubly make owning an ev more appealing. Additionally, the
government would be spending less money instead of more, which makes
eliminating fossil fuel subsidies a very appropriate decision for a
government that is $28 trillion in debt.

Subsidizing both fossil fuels and ev charging seems to just be creating
needless bureaucracy to me.

[EVDL] $7.5bn for ev charging stations across the US

2022-02-11 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
The only problem that I see with this is that the government is making
people who do not support ev’s pay for ev charging. I say that we wait for
mass ev adoption to happen(which will happen very soon). After this,
businesses and apartment building owners will pay for ev charging stations
out of their own pocket because having ev charging as an amenity will
attract more customers/tenants. Some hotels are already starting to do this.

A government that is 28 trillion dollars in debt should not be spending
billions of dollars that it does not have.

Re: [EVDL] Request Tesla crash data

2022-02-08 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
Here is my take on Tesla FSD Beta:

It is your decision to use buy/use FSD Beta. I don't know why anyone would
pay $12,000 to be a beta tester, but I guess some people will.

When you choose to use this feature, you are assuming all risks associated
with it. Yes, it is not perfect, but that is implied in the name "FSD
*BETA.*" It is not the government's job to regulate an optional feature on
any vehicle.

Another thing to consider is number of lives that FSD Beta has saved. Yes,
there have been some cases where the software has caused an accident, but
there are many other instances in which the software has avoided a
potentially fatal crash. Is FSD Beta better than a teenager distracted by
his/her phone? In most scenarios, I would say yes (although I do not have
any personal experience with FSD Beta).

Eventually, FSD Beta will get to a point where it is as good or better than
a human driver. Until then, users of FSD Beta need to be paying attention
to the road at all times while using the feature.

Re: [EVDL] Join Home Electrification on Nextdoor

2021-12-03 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
The problem I have with using electricity for heat is that as an entire
system, it is less efficient unless your electricity usage is 100% covered
by solar panels. However, heat pumps may be an exception to this - it
probably depends on where you live. I am not entirely sure.

For example, say that 100% of your electricity comes from natural gas. I am
making up numbers here, but let's say the generator is 50% efficient, and
you have a 5% transmission loss. By the time that energy is turned into
heat by your electric stove/space heater, 47.5% of the energy has been
wasted. If you have just burned the natural gas in the first place, you
could probably get somewhere in the 80-90%(or higher) efficiency range.

I know that not all of our energy comes from natural gas, but 40% of it is.
Another 19% is produced by coal, and only 40% are produced by clean energy
sources such as hydro, solar, or nuclear. It seems like it would be much
less wasteful to just burn natural gas directly.

Heat pumps are interesting though as they have the potential to move more
heat energy than the energy they consume as electricity.

Anyway, that's my take on it. I would love to hear opposing viewpoints.

[EVDL] DC/DC converter for sale

2021-11-13 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
Hi everyone,

I have an Elcon DC/DC converter for sale. The label says is is good to 30
amps on the output, but I have never seen more than 8 amps come out of it,
so I am selling it as-is. It also produces a large amount of electrical
noise on the output.

I am asking $10 + shipping.

Please email me if interested - I would post pictures but EVDL does not
allow pictures to pass through the list. I can send you pictures via email
if you are interested.

[EVDL] Radio Noise Issue

2021-10-13 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
Hello Everyone,

I have a Geo Metro that I converted electric and the radio has never been
able to pick up more than one station because of all the noise the dc-dc
converter outputs. I have been able to verify that the noise is being
picked up through the 12 volt input of the radio and not through the
antenna. I have tried putting a large line-voltage EMI filter on the output
of the dc-dc converter and it did not do anything. I also tried putting a
large capacitor on the output and experienced similar results.

Is there anyone out there who has had a similar issue and found a solution?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I hope everyone heard when she said “thanks to Toyota for sponsoring this

Toyota has historically been anti BEV and pro FCEV. Like David said, she
brought up the old lie that if everyone switches to BEVs, the electric grid
would go down. As BEVs slowly gain market share, the grid will adapt.

Like I said before, Hydrogen never had and never will have a future in the

No Camrys involved. Tanks get tested. If you are trying to imply that they
are dangerous, well so is everything. Risks get managed. Some get managed
better than others. Batteries have their own risks, too, as does any other
energy storage mechanism.

Umm… here’s the problem. Having a 5,000 PSI hydrogen storage tank sitting
under your hood is like having 50 pounds of tannerite sitting in your trunk
at all times. If you get into an accident and that hydrogen tank is
damaged, the results will be catastrophic to say the least. Yes, lithiums
have their risks too, but they are still a lot safer than a 5000 PSI vessel
full of flammable gas.

Because of this combined with many other factors, such as the inefficiency
of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen(electrolysis),
I believe that hydrogen does not have a future in using it to power
vehicles. Even for use in long-haul trucks, there are still many obstacles
to overcome, such as refueling infrastructure.

I am comfortable saying that any hydrogen fuel cell start up is certain to
fail with the current technology and fueling infrastructure available.

[EVDL] battery heaters

2021-02-23 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I am doing more research as to whether or not I actually need a battery
heater in order to charge the leaf batteries at 20 degrees fahrenheit.

[EVDL] battery heaters

2021-02-22 Thread nathan christiansn via EV
Hi all,

I live in northern utah, and it can get fairly cold here in the
winter(close to 20 fahrenheit in the night)

I am using nissan leaf batteries in my Geo Metro EV conversion. The leaf
batteries, as with most other lithium batteries, is not supposed to be
charged below 32 degrees fahrenheit.

I am worried that I will not be able to charge my EV during the winter
because of the cold outside temperatures. I also do not currently have
access to a heated garage.

I am considering adding a battery heater. I was thinking of attaching one
of those silicone heating pads that are used as ICE block heaters to
the bottom of my 2 steel battery boxes, but I was wondering if anyone had
any better ideas?

Glenn,

I was able to find a knock-off curtis programmer on Ebay that connects to a
laptop via usb for $50 + shipping. I had to cut off the connector on the
end and splice into the serial TX and RX lines in the wiring harness on my
Curtis 1238 controller, I don't know if you will have to do the same thing,
or if the connector will work for you. Attached is the image that I used
wire the programmer into my 1238 wiring harness

You will need to download the curtis 1314 programming software in order to
use the programmer. I was able to download software online for free, but it
was a little hard to find. I can send you the program if you would like.
You need a windows machine to run it.

Do this at your own risk - If you do not feel comfortable doing it, it
might be better just to buy the $600 programmer or rent one from somewhere.
Curtis controllers are expensive.
Hope this helps

Nathan
