RE: Shortcuts to Outlook objects
First, yes, by OST I mean offline. This is really strange. I am using the exact same syntax but it is not working. Therefore, there must be something else going on. Are you creating a desktop shortcut, Right-click on desktop, choose New | Shortcut, etc. We're both using the same syntax and getting different results so it is either a problem with the specific machines (I have tried this on 3 different WinXP/Outlook2002 machines) or in the way that we are creating the link/shortcut. By OST do you mean when offline? I am running Outlook 2002 SR-1 on Windows XP SP1. When online, I can create a URL like the one you show below using angle brackets. I can also do the same when working offline. Clicking on either one opens the message in question. I can also reference a file. I just tested all of this. Perhaps, as Chris suggested, your problem is that you need to reference the file using the format: outlook://public folders/favorites/consulting/~budget_tracking.xls Note the forward slashes and the tilde. Re: Shortcuts to Outlook objects
What exactly is your point in all of this? To be honest, I can't follow any line of reasoning or an actual point to this post. You seem to be complaining a lot about something, but I am not sure exactly what it is. There's lots of sarcasm in the post, which seems to be a substitute for actual substance. My DOS application worked under Windows 2000 server, but now doesn't under XP. How is that any different than something working under Outlook 97 and not under Outlook 2002[1]? Hell, there's functionality that worked in Outlook 2000 that was stripped out in Outlook 2000 SR1. Damn that Microsoft! Bastards the whole lot of 'em. Stripping out core OS functionality like Outlook object hyperlinks. Ye gods, that's more critical than preemptive multi-tasking! Next thing you know they'll want us all to upgrade to Exchange 2000 and use these uniquely addressable hyperlink thingies and webdav. When will they learn that 640k is enough RAM for anyone? I have no idea what if any syntax will work for your Outlook:// hyperlinks Greg, but thanks for the entertainment. I'd test, but I don't exactly use Outlook 2002 any longer. [1] Counts on fingers.. Outlook 97, Outlook 98, Outlook 98, Outlook 2000, Outlook 2001, Outlook 2002... Six. Yep, only six versions. What were they thinking?[2] [2] There wasn't a similar hyperlink syntax for the Exchange client was there? Cause then I'd really be mad at them for changing things TWICE!!! Last time I checked, I could still pop out to a command prompt and enter \temp\picture.gif or notepad c:\temp\file.txt and I can look at a file. This is equivalent. Backwards compatibility between an OS that has seen 6 or 7 version changes and an OS that has seen 1 version change are completely different things. In addition, one is a matter of supporting third-party applications and this is a matter of supporting core OS functionality. You cannot blame them for not providing backwards compatibility for applications written to an OS eons ago but to not provide compatibility for a core OS function of only a year or two ago is sad. My point was that this is the straw that breaks the camels back. First my application written for DOS 3.22 stops working on Windows X, then they change core OS functionality like the ability to create an Outlook:// shortcut on the desktop. RE: Shortcuts to Outlook objects
I had been typing the URL into a message between angle brackets. I tried it your way, by right-clicking the desktop and selecting New - Shortcut, entering the URL without angle brackets and using the %20 and it works either online or offline. Again, I'm running XP Pro SP1 and Office XP (Outlook 2002) SR1. This tilde thing is the way I've always known to do it. I have a W2K system running Outlook 2000. On this system, I can create a shortcut to a file located in an Outlook OST thus: outlook:\\Public%20Folders\Favorites\Consulting\budget_tracking.xls.em l This works great on this system. However, on a WinXP system running Outlook 2002, the shortcut doesn't work at all. Anyone have the syntax for this? I have checked Slipstick and found some stuff but none of it works. If I include the , WinXP wants to throw an http: in front of it. I know that this is a really silly, stupid problem but it is driving me nuts that I can get it to work on my system but not on this WinXP/O2002 system. Here we go... I need to modify the details templates for the public folders, but, when I open System Manager - Details Templates - Public Folder - Templates, the buttons add-remove-modify are inactive. In the meantime, though, I am able to modify the other templates, eg users, groups, etc. Is this by design or as I thought is a problem of permission ? And, if so, where should I look ? Installing Internet Messaging
My CIO would like Internet Messaging (more correctly Intranet Messaging) setup. When I did a test install in our lab environment I got a number of file copy errors when installing the service on an Exchange 2000 SP3 server. I am assuming that the errors are a result of SP3 being installed. I have read the white paper on installing it and looked through the knowledge base for more information with no luck. We had to blow away the Exchange 2000 server in the lab for another project so I am unable to test further. I have a number of questions for anybody that has experience with this. Has anybody done this? Should I leave the newer files? Or should overwrite the files then re-install SP3? Can you install Instant Messaging from the SP3 CD? Luckily, I have a production Exchange 2000 server with no mailboxes or public folders on it so I will be able to perform reboots if necessary. I was hoping somebody has some experience with this so I can do it right the first time. Thanks, -Matt Matthew Bailey LAN Engineer CSK Auto, Inc. RE: Exchange Server 5.5 and Win 2000 network
What? You most certainly can run Exchange 5.5 on NT4 (or 2000 server for that matter) in an AD domain. You don't even need the DS client to do so. If I'm understanding the original question correctly, you want to upgrade your PDC to win2k creating (or joining) an AD forest. You want to leave your exchange 5.5 server, which is presumably a member of the upgraded domain, running NT4. Correct? This will work just fine. You could upgrade the exchange 5.5 server to windows 2000, but I wouldn't bother. Build a new win2k server, install E2K, joining your existing exchange org. Migrate your mailboxes to the new server, retire the old. There's lots of little details you have to pay attention to along the way, but MS has tons of documents available to step you through the whole process. -Original Message- From: Bingel, Chris [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 1:28 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange Server 5.5 and Win 2000 network You can't run it with the AD client on NT4? -Original Message- From: Woodruff, Michael [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 1:27 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange Server 5.5 and Win 2000 network Its not only possible, its required. -Original Message- From: Keith Boettcher [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 1:20 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange Server 5.5 and Win 2000 network We are changing our Windows NT network to Win2K. RE: Exchange Server 5.5 and Win 2000 network
Thank all of you for your advice. Ken Cornetet understood what I meant to say. We are upgrading our PDC to Win2K, etc. The exchange 5.5 server is in our current domain and will be a member of the upgraded Win2K domain. The Exchange 5.5 server will continue to run under NT4 server. [I'm paraphrasing Mr. Cornetet's response to confirm that's our plan.] Next (after an undertermined interval of time) will be to move to Exchange 2000 running on a win2k server box in the same Win2K domain. I realize that migration will take some planning and care, but I'm not asking for advice on that move yet. Thank you all. -Keith _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sure that the user logged in has appropriate permissions to see the address list which contains the mailbox in question? Can you resolve using the DN of the mailbox in question (cn=user,cn=recipeints,dn=yadda)? If you log in as another user onto the system can you resolve this mailbox (and if you set the permissions on the Exchange Advanced tab to 'none' can you present a set of permissions which will resolve the mailbox)? Neither of those tools works against an unmounted store of any kind, so a recovery server would be required. Ontrack's tool might work, btu for this particular scenario a recovery server is less expensive. On 2/6/03 17:07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I do, but in E2K.
