Subject: Just a quick question

Hi all,
I am in the middle of an upgrade to windows 2000 server from an NT 4.0
domain. I plan to run in mixed mode then install exchange 2000, before
transfering the mail over from 5.5, here's what i have so far. Sorry if its
a bit newbie.

I have 1 NT 4 server (sp6) running Exchange 5.5 (sp4) acting as the PDC.

I have purchased 1 new server and have installed NT 4(sp6) and added it to
the domain as a BDC and sychronised the 2 machines.

I now plan to reverse the roles and make the the old PDC with Exchange on it
the BDC and the new one the PDC. I was then planning to insert the windows
2000 server CD in the new PDC and do an in place upgrade.

My problem is, the current domain name is BSI and there actual registered
domain is BSImerch.com, which is what i would like to use ( i inherited it
this way) If i upgrade the new box to 2k and name the domain as i would
like, i'm not quite sure how things are going to go. I really can't afford
for their mail server to go down :(

I was thinking that i should re-name the domain on NT 4 first. Also, should
i have a second BDC standing by or is an inplace a straight forward job?

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

David

Yeah, the routing thing may be tricky, but one would have to wonder the
reasoning behind it. Seems to me you could only make such a guarantee with
a completely separate infrastructure.

Correct on the address list part. His big concern was the routing of
internal only for mail between them and the internet mail not to go through
the normal routing. I am going to talk to him to get exactly what he means
by internet routing being separate from their normal routing for internet. I
am also thinking he has to point those users mail to do the smarthost route.

I will repost when I have all of what he want to accomplish.

You'd have to do it with different address lists. I don't have the number
handy, but there are KB articles on making separate address lists. Through
permissions you can control which ones users see. You would need a group to
effectively assign the permissions.

He currently has a single group. Exchnage 2000 I think he can but would have
to setup another group and set restrictions via the RGC

RE: Question from client

2003-10-30 Thread Ed Crowley [MVP]
You'd have to do it with different address lists. I don't have the number
handy, but there are KB articles on making separate address lists. Through
permissions you can control which ones users see. You would need a group to
effectively assign the permissions.

He currently has a single group. Exchnage 2000 I think he can but would have
to setup another group and set restrictions via the RGC

This is not true...you CAN add DC's to an SBS domain. Obviously those
DC's cannot be SBS servers.

You're correct. SBS can not be added to an existing domain. It must be
the one and only domain controller.

Email addresses in Exchange do not have to have any connection to your
AD
domain. I usually just add the Internet domain as an SMTP address, and
make
it the "primary" address.

> 2- should SBS be a member server or a controller

SBS *has* to be a domain controller. I'm not even sure it can be
joined
to an existing domain.

RE: Exchange 2K & Outlook 2K3 - increase in size of *.stm

2003-10-30 Thread Steve Molkentin
Neil & Andy (and anyone else interested!),

Firstly thanks for your replies - every bit helps when you have a
conundrum.

I managed to increase the size of the exchange drive, and then last
night dismounted the store and ran eseutil /d. *.stm file went from
approx 9GB to 1.5 GB (what I was expecting!).

To that end - not sure WHY it did it, but that solved the problem. And
Andy, yes - we need bigger drives (however politics dictate that what
the servers have is what they will keep until we upgrade them in 12
months or so). Damn proprietary hard drives! ;)

Thanks for your help - this list is a goldmine.

RE: SPAM filtering on a budget

2003-10-30 Thread Lentz, Wayne
We love and use the setup described here:
http://lawmonkey.org/anti-spam.html

It can be daunting for someone unfamiliar with nix type os's. But it's free
software and runs great on old hardware. For us, it filters out 1200-1500
spams per day with about a %94 success rate.

RE: Can you run 2 Outlook with different profiles at the same time

2003-10-30 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
I guess if you use a server as a client and it has Terminal Services on
it, then you can run multiple Outlooks in separate Terminal Server
sessions.

Or Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Pro - it allows you to switch
to another user profile without logging off. It does not kill the
previous user's programs.

RE: Exch 5.5 Routing Question

2003-10-30 Thread Woods, Tony
Ok, thanks. So according to mine, it looks like I have the redundancy.
There's two entries for each site but I just noticed that the MTA Properties
on my server show to 'Only use least cost routes'. With that enabled, it
wouldn't even try the other connector if our link was down now would it? I
un-ticked it but I guess the only way to test is to wait for a failure [:-)

Hello,

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on W2K SP4 boxes. 1 ORG, 3 Sites (A, B, C) in three
different cities across N.A.

I have 2 x400 connectors setup in each location. Each site is setup the same
in that they all have two x400 connectors, each going to one of the other
sites. If the VPN link between Site A and Site C goes down and site C is
trying to send mail to Site A, will Site C route it's mail through Site B to
get to Site A? If not, how can I make this so? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Tony

RE: IronMail

2003-10-30 Thread Walker, Heath
We are also evaluating the solution. It offers the SLS (statistical
lookup service) where messages are analyzed and then compared against an
external dbase to see if they have gone out to large numbers of users
(spam). This appears to be a very quick and efficient process. They
are of course only leveraging the information other Ironmail boxes
collect. I know of no issues where we have a false positive w/ this
functionality. Of course we had to exempt some business related list
servers.

We are using a feature where a number of criteria have to fail then
those failures are weighted and based on an aggregate value that you
define whether the mail is or is not flagged as spam. Those things you
can leverage and weigh are RBL's, Reverse DNS, SLS, and User and system
defined header analysis. We are currently blocking about 80% of mail
that is inbound to our organization.

We will be deploying the "end user quarantine" functionality next week
(when it is available w/ service release 5). Users can then be sent a
single e-mail on a schedule you select and let them see what has been
blocked w/ a URL to release it. Once that is available, We plan on
implementing more strict policies (once I have that safety net).

Email addresses in Exchange do not have to have any connection to your AD
domain. I usually just add the Internet domain as an SMTP address, and make
it the "primary" address.

> 2- should SBS be a member server or a controller

SBS *has* to be a domain controller. I'm not even sure it can be joined
to an existing domain.

All advice appreciated...

We have recently introduced Outlook 2K3 into our Exchange 2000
environment. Our laptop users we have configured to run Outlook in
"cached exchange mode".

In the same time frame, our *.stm has exploded from about 1.5 GB to
approx 9GB. The *.edb file has not grown (apart from normal mail
services).

Why would this have happened? Is it not related to the introduction of
Outlook 2K3? Is it related? I have not yet run esutil, as there are
other space issues this has now highlighted (and means until I free up
some space elsewhere I can't run it, knowing I need approx 110% free
space, and we now only have 1.79GB free on the drive the db's live on).

I have searched the MS-KB and come up with nada. Ideas, suggestions all
welcome...

Thanks,

themolk.

We have experienced a vast increase in the amount of spam our employees have
been getting (in the region of 3-400% increase) over the last 6 months.
Prior to this, our MailSweeper was coping quite well with the problem, but
is having significant problems with HTML based email ( the ones with
words split up like this ).
It got to the point where about 50% of the mail arriving was of this form
and was getting past the filters.

We have recently taken the rather drastic measure (with board backing) to
restrict inbound HTML, with a 'whitelist' for exceptional circumstances.

Understandably, this was not a very popular move, but has reduced the
inbound spam to virtually nil. The way I have designed my whitelist also
means that I have a workably low proportion of false positives.
I am not completely happy with this solution, but am prepared to live with
it until I have an alternative that is as effective.

I have however been asked a question which I would like to relay

Do any of you restrict HTML based email to either a greater or lesser
extent?

Thanks for taking time to respond

Nick

If you can't add SBS to a domain

Can you add a SBS as a controller to SBS
If it's only one controller there is no redundancy

If yes, Can you add a regular W2K server as a controller to SBS

Email addresses in Exchange do not have to have any connection to your AD
domain. I usually just add the Internet domain as an SMTP address, and make
it the "primary" address.

SBS *has* to be a domain controller. I'm not even sure it can be joined

RE: SPAM filtering on a budget

2003-10-30 Thread Mark Dewell
The bayesian filtering in GFI MailEssentials is quite impressive. To give you
an idea of the figures, on Wednesday we had 2336 blocked by the bayesian
filter, 369 blocked by my keyword list, 206 remote images and 199 blocked by
ordb open relay database. This totals approx 26% of our incoming mail.

True. Something I've noticed too - recently upgraded to Outlook XP on the
client side with the server side still hosting Exchange 5.5 SP4 - seems like
it takes longer to read and send emails now using Outlook XP - certainly

all maybe somebody out there is in a similar predicament.

I have a user who is using Outlook XP/2002 and they are connecting to my
Exchange server via a VPN connection. There is no way in He** that I am
going to setup a pop3 or Imap connection point for them.

Every so often this user starts getting slow response times. A dialog box
pops up and tries to establish a connection with the exchange server.

I have users who have a similar setup. But they are using Outlook 98 and
Outlook 2000 and they don't experience the same delays.

This user lives out in California but when they came to Atlanta they were
experiencing the same thing.

Exchange 5.5 has the latest service pack4.

Please don't say upgrade to Exchange 2003. That's not in our budget and also
we have about 200 email accounts and in Exchange 2003 you have to pay for
every email account you create.

I think we are going Lotus and drop Microsoft all together.

Anybody have any ideas?

RE: Off-topic changing SMTP port on Exchange for spam filtering.

2003-10-30 Thread Paul Hutchings
It does work, we've used it for a year or so. I've not used the bayes
filtering but the rest is very flexible, also it's written by a small
company (I suspect it's one guy) and I've found him really quick with
replies to questions, and very amenable to adding sensible features to later
versions.

The one thing I do like about it is the logging - we use 5.5 and smtp
logging sucks, this logs everything to text, and the important info to csv
and all sort of stuff.. well worth a try IMHO.

regards,
Paul

Subject: Can anybody help with this ?

My organization is having problems sending email to a user @tampabay.rr.com
I tried to do an NSLOOKUP and found a host of different MX records for this
domain. However when I try to telnet to them I can't seem to connect. Can
anybody try and let me know the results ? The problem is that our emails do
reach them but after a long delay. They claim that they haven't had any
problems from other people and that the problem only comes from our end.
Help would be appreciated ! Thanks

RE: IronMail

2003-10-30 Thread John Matteson
We are looking at the product, the weighted spam filtering seem to be a
lot better choice than the simple filters other products use. The
selling point for us geeks here is the security functions for OWA and
the ability of a user to release their own mail from inbound holding via
a web interface.

The steep price for our configuration of choice is the sticking point
with management.

Exchange 5.5

Sorry if this came through twice. Had to change the text type and re-send.

This is a little off-topic. We are about to deploy XWall for Exchange on
our front end IMC relays. One of the requirements is that we change the
smtp port for Exchange on the IMC's to use 24 since XWall will use port 25
and get the messages first. I guess my questions are:

For users using POP or custom applications that are using the Exchange IMC
as their relay host, how will changing the ports affect them? Have I just
disabled POP by installing XWall?

We have locked down all unused ports so I guess I need to open port 24 up to
the front end and back end servers as well.

Is there anything I need to be careful about or any other gotchas that I
should know.

RE: Outlook 2002/XP Conecting to Exchange 5.5

2003-10-30 Thread Alverson, Tom
Be advised that you cannot use the new biggie sized PST files ("unicode")
for cache mode one Exchange 5.5 (It won't let you). The result of this is
that it will create a 2g limited pst file, and if your mailbox is over about
1.5g (pst's take more space to save the messages) it will die and you will
have to disable cache mode until you get your mailbox on the server well
below 2g.

all maybe somebody out there is in a similar predicament.

Build a specific signature that look for the string you are looking for in
your external IDS and once it trigger, correlate the IDS log with your FW

Subject: Exchange 2K & Outlook 2K3 - increase in size of *.stm

All advice appreciated...

We have recently introduced Outlook 2K3 into our Exchange 2000 environment.
Our laptop users we have configured to run Outlook in "cached exchange
mode".

In the same time frame, our *.stm has exploded from about 1.5 GB to approx
9GB. The *.edb file has not grown (apart from normal mail services).

Why would this have happened? Is it not related to the introduction of
Outlook 2K3? Is it related? I have not yet run esutil, as there are other
space issues this has now highlighted (and means until I free up some space
elsewhere I can't run it, knowing I need approx 110% free space, and we now
only have 1.79GB free on the drive the db's live on).

I have searched the MS-KB and come up with nada. Ideas, suggestions all
welcome...

Thanks,

themolk.
