Upgrading Exchange Server Hard Disk

2003-12-04 Thread Jees
Hi guys,

Will be gratefull if you can contribute to this
please.

I have an Exchange 5.5, sp4 server on win 2k with sp4.

In my Dell Power Edge 2400, i have two scsi disks
(01) within this exchange server. Disk 1 has 3 18g
hds with a logical drive of G.

G contains Exchsrvr folder which hosts priv.edb and
pub.edb.  its like g:\exchsrvr\mdbdata\ and the two
edb files.

Now, G is near capacity and would like to upgrade it
to bigger space.

I have purchased two 36gb hd from Dell (based on
Dell's advise), and ready to be backing up the G drive
and the rest.

I would like you to feel free to suggest any tips and
tricks that u know off, or any advise.

Thanking you

Do you have 2 spare slots to put those drives in? If so do that. Then use

RE: Exchange on a SAN

2003-12-04 Thread Wohlgemuth, Mike
most sans (at least the ones I am looking at) ARE full of disks AND
the storage is virtualized across all of them ...

the main reason I am looking into them is for snapshots ... almost
instantaneous backups (depending on your san administrative solution) of
the storage that can be relocated elsewhere for almost pretty darn quick
disaster recovery solutions ... beats tape recovery by being able to
recover in 5 minutes rather than 5 hours (or days)

this , of course, does not mean we will stop doing tape backups ... it
is just another level of backup solutions ...

ps .. thanks to everyone for your comments

thanks

I don't understand why anyone should bother putting Exchange on a SAN
unless it is a big SAN full of disks and the storage is virtualized
across all of them. Unfortunately, many customers just buy their
shelves and disks separately for each application and they ultimately
end up with something that doesn't perform any better than direct-attach
storage but costs a lot more.

Exchange 2000 SMTP Connector

2003-12-04 Thread Bridges, Samantha
Is having a SMTP Connector necessary in and Exchange 2000 Organization?
I have a friend who has an Exchange server that is somehow relaying
spam. My server does not relay spam and has the same settings in the
SMTP Virtual server properties. The only difference between his system
and mine is that I have a SMTP Connector and he doesn't. Or at least he
says he doesn't see a connector in his ESM.

I thought it was necessary to have a connector.

RE: Exchange 2000 SMTP Connector

2003-12-04 Thread Ben Winzenz
No, it is not necessary. I do not have a connector (ok, actually I do,
but it is ONLY routing mail to for a specific domain). All my normal
e-mail flows out through the SMTP VS. What you have to realize is that
SMTP connector properties override the Default SMTP VS properties. So,
if your SMTP VS relay settings are wrong and allow relaying, if your
SMTP Connector is not allowing relaying, it will not be allowed. If you
can detail what your Relay settings are on both your SMTP VS and the
Connector, or even better, detail what your friend's settings are, we
can probably help with where the problem is.

Ideal setup for exch 2003?

2003-12-04 Thread Rob Hackney

I've been asked to get a 'wish list' together for next years budget so
I'm going all out for an upgrade from present setup:
Small Business Server 2k (inc exch2k) to PDC running W2k3 on present box
but will need a new box for Exch2k3
What would be a (relatively sensible) 'ideal' setup. I've read the
recommended from MS but seem to recall that Exch 5.5 ran better on dual
processors. Does this apply to Exch 2k3 or am I imagining things/
making it up?
BTW, I'm not talking about partition info - hardware really such as
processor speed/ dual/ memory
thanks

RE: Exchange on a SAN

2003-12-04 Thread ehansen
I feel sorry for those people, we had direct attach on every server.
Somewhere around 60 servers. The cost analysis showed our san paying for
itself in 4 years, and when we pulled our Exchange DB's, SQL, Oracle DB's
off DA raid5 sets and onto the SAN we saw no less then a 400% i/o increase.
Our users were very happy.

If people have systems that are running slower on their san then they did on
DA then thats bad administration, not nessicarily the technologies fault.

Converting w2k DNS to BIND

2003-12-04 Thread Pham, Tuan
Good morning all!

I'm in the process of transfering the DNS role from the current W2K/AD DNS to
BIND(compliant version). I have two DCs that point to W2K DNS, and two cluster E2K.
Now, when I change the DNS on the DCs and the E2K, is there anything I need to look
out for or is it just simple changing the DNS in the TCP/IP Properties and ofcourse
reboot too? Thanks!

RE: Ideal setup for exch 2003?

2003-12-04 Thread Eric Fretz
Exchange 2000 and 2003 can make good use of dual processors. The
configuration will vary based upon the load and number of users you are
supporting, but here's an example of the system I just ordered for my
company:

Dell PowerEdge 4400
Windows 2000 Server
Exchange 2000 Enterprise Edition
Dual Pentium-4 Xeon 2.8 GHz Processors
2.0 GB of Dual channel DDR RAM (4 x 512 MB DDR)
4-channel PERC Raid card

Disks:
2 x 18.2G 10k rpm drives [RAID-1] = C:\ (OS Drive)
2 x 18.2G 15k rpm drives [RAID-1] = D:\ (Directory Store + SMTP Queue
+ Swapfile)
4 x 73G 15x rpm drives [RAID-5] = E:\ (Information Store)
2 x 36G 15k rpm drives [RAID-0] = F:\ (Secondary Swapfile + free space for
doing Information Store maintenance)

Quantum VS160 Tape Drive (80/160GB)

Note: For those of you who have been following my saga, I was finally able
to get the executive board to approve $$$ for a new server NOW instead of
1/2004. I guess when you equate mail downtime to dollars and cents, they
tend to listen more closely to the IT guy!

Outlook 2003 on Windows 2000 works fine on Exchange v5.5 (I'm using it

 now!).

Yes, same here.

Also, Outlook 2002 on Windows XP works great for me.

It's just the combination of XP and Outlook 2003 that is causing me
troubles.

While most any other system is quite happy with incremental backups,
Exchange is one of those that you want to do full backups on always. The
reason being is that incremental do not commit and flush the transaction
logs. Only a full backup will do that. In addition, you will want to
familiarize yourself with this:

What backup rituals do you guys use on your Exchange sites? I've looked

backups.
My first blush is to backup the entire databases + logs once a week and
then backup the incremental changes to the logs daily.

All suggestions, snide remarks and pithy one-liners are welcome...

Converting w2k dns to bind

2003-12-04 Thread Pham, Tuan
Good morning all!
I'm in the process of transfering the DNS role from the current W2K/AD DNS to
BIND(compliant version). I have two DCs that point to W2K DNS, and two cluster E2K.
Now, when I change the DNS on the DCs and the E2K, is there anything I need to look
out for or is it just simple changing the DNS in the TCP/IP Properties and ofcourse
reboot too? Thanks!

Not really, just restore the previous full and replay the logs. You should
have the store on one redundant array, and your logs on another. This
should protect you from both drive and array failures.

Why bother? The only value I would see in that would be if you were

What backup rituals do you guys use on your Exchange sites? I've looked
through the FAQs and read most of the relevant Microsoft Qxxx articles
on Exchange administration, but I haven't found the way to do good
backups.
My first blush is to backup the entire databases + logs once a week and
then backup the incremental changes to the logs daily.

All suggestions, snide remarks and pithy one-liners are welcome...

2003-12-04 Thread Eric Fretz
Oops! I left out the logs live on the D:\. It really does not matter where
I put the directory store because it is pretty small and all of the disks
are fast. I chose to put it on the D:\ array for seperation purposes. In
truth, if the E: array goes down, having the directory on a separate drive
didn't buy anything, but it is one less thing I have to worry about
restoring.

RE: Backup rituals

2003-12-04 Thread Paul Hutchings
I do mostly cause i can, my strategy purely from a how quick can i get
this working if it breaks p.o.v is to do a full backup nightly using
ntbackup to dump to a file on a removable SCSI drive wihch then gets dumped
to tape. I also do an incremental to get the logs at lunchtime, the store
and logs are on separate physical raid volumes so i figure that covers most
scenarios without being over the top..

Paul

RE: Ideal setup for exch 2003?

2003-12-04 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)
Eric,

Based on what I have read of your posts in the last few days, I have a
question. It would appear that you have been granted the money you need to
upgrade the infrastucture and Exchange to what is needed. If that is the
case, why would you order Win2000 and Exchange 2000, when you could go
straight to Win2k3 and Exchange 2003?

Just curious.

Subject: Ideal setup for exch 2003?

I've been asked to get a 'wish list' together for next years budget so I'm
going all out for an upgrade from present setup: Small Business Server 2k
(inc exch2k) to PDC running W2k3 on present box but will need a new box for
Exch2k3 What would be a (relatively sensible) 'ideal' setup. I've read the
recommended from MS but seem to recall that Exch 5.5 ran better on dual
processors. Does this apply to Exch 2k3 or am I imagining things/ making it
up? BTW, I'm not talking about partition info - hardware really such as
processor speed/ dual/ memory thanks

Can't find the old exchange client anywhere. My exchange 200 server

problem. The e2k3 is the issue.

S/MIME

2003-12-04 Thread Bowles, John (OIG/OMP)
All,

I'm trying to setup S/MIME since we all of a sudden require message security within
our organization. I'm trying to get an understanding on how this works in the real
world. I've setup a test lab here at work. But that can only help me understand how
to get things done internally. I'm looking at a braoder scope of allowing our
messages to be secure while passing over the internet to other corporations etc. Can
someone point me in the direction on what I need to read to understand this a little
bit better I'd really appreciate it.

Also, if anyone wants to contact me offline. I have a few questions that I'd like
answered if you have time.

I'd just make sure that your allow-update and allow-transfer settings

 Good morning all!
I'm in the process of transfering the DNS role from the
current W2K/AD DNS to BIND(compliant version). I have two DCs
that point to W2K DNS, and two cluster E2K. Now, when I
change the DNS on the DCs and the E2K, is there anything I
need to look out for or is it just simple changing the DNS in
the TCP/IP Properties and ofcourse reboot too? Thanks!

RE: S/MIME

2003-12-04 Thread Bowles, John (OIG/OMP)
I have a few questions here that I'd like to put out there. Now, mind you. I'm not
an expert in this field. That's why I'm turning to the people on this list for
advice. With that said.

-Since we have a requirement for secure messaging over the internet with other
government agencies. We would have to get a third party CA to accomplish this. The
other agencies that we would want to communicate with also would have to go through a
third party as well to obtain a CA so we can transmit messages securely between one
another?

-Also, since we also have a requirement for us to have secure messaging internally.
We already have a root CA in place within our organization. Setting up S/MIME
internally isn't that hard. But if we already have this root CA in place and we
needed to obtain a third party CA. How would we implement this third party CA into
our already existing root CA? I'm sure if there is a way to do this. Are there any
docs that describe how to accomplish this feat?

Thank you,

braoder scope of allowing our messages to be secure while passing over the
internet to other corporations etc. Can someone point me in the direction
on what I need to read to understand this a little bit better I'd really
appreciate it.

Also, if anyone wants to contact me offline. I have a few questions that
I'd like answered if you have time.

TIA,

RE: What ports to open

2003-12-04 Thread Eric Fretz
Your firewall also needs to be able to pass WebDAV traffic. Firewall-1 and
other products like it can filter out WebDAV traffic which will cause your
OWA client to fall back to compatibility or netscape mode. I've even seen
some cases where that would not work, either.

Good luck,
Eric

RE: Converting w2k dns to bind

2003-12-04 Thread Eric Fretz
Yup, yup. If BIND isn't setup to allow dynamic updates, the DCs will get
very upset. I tried this very thing with a Linux box running BIND 1.5 years
ago and it never worked correctly. I've heard that BIND support for Dynamic
updates has gotten much better since then.

I'd just make sure that your allow-update and allow-transfer settings are
copacetic. The DCs, I believe, will get snooty if they can't change the
records.

Thanks!

Need Help Restoring a Deleted pub.edb in 5.5

2003-12-04 Thread Willem Jackson
Boy, do I feel stupid! Please don't pile on -- I'm suffering enough SHAME
and GUILT already...

Here's my sad story:

On the Friday after Thanksgiving (office closed, I thought I would show a
little initiative and finally do that ESEUTIL work I had been putting off
for 18 months. I had shut down Exchange and copied my on my 8gb priv.edb
and 11mb pub.edb to a backup hard drive. Because the ESEUTIL process
aborted halfway through the process on priv.edb, I decided to instead just
put things back the way they were and go home to discuss the day's tragic
events with my good friend JACK DANIELS. :)

(Maybe I will revisit ESEUTIL over the Christmas holidays, but that's
another story.)

Anyway, when I came back to work on Monday, I started getting reports that
the Public Folders were gone. For reasons still unknown to me, I must have
either MOVED or DELETED pub.edb from its original location. Exchange had
evidently rebuilt a pub.edb file, but it was just 2 mb with no visbile
data and only a couple of default folders. (The original entries for the
Public Folders were still showing up in Exchange Administrator for what
it's worth.)

I found the copy of 11 mb pub.edb that I had made on Friday.

What is the best/easiest procedure for a moron like myself to get the file
back into Exchange?

My question is why on earth would you bother doing an offline defrag on

Boy, do I feel stupid! Please don't pile on -- I'm suffering enough
SHAME and GUILT already...

Here's my sad story:

On the Friday after Thanksgiving (office closed, I thought I would show
a little initiative and finally do that ESEUTIL work I had been putting
off for 18 months. I had shut down Exchange and copied my on my 8gb
priv.edb and 11mb pub.edb to a backup hard drive. Because the ESEUTIL
process aborted halfway through the process on priv.edb, I decided to
instead just put things back the way they were and go home to discuss
the day's tragic events with my good friend JACK DANIELS. :)

(Maybe I will revisit ESEUTIL over the Christmas holidays, but that's
another story.)

Anyway, when I came back to work on Monday, I started getting reports
that the Public Folders were gone. For reasons still unknown to me, I
must have either MOVED or DELETED pub.edb from its original location.
Exchange had evidently rebuilt a pub.edb file, but it was just 2 mb with
no visbile data and only a couple of default folders. (The original
entries for the Public Folders were still showing up in Exchange
Administrator for what it's worth.)

I found the copy of 11 mb pub.edb that I had made on Friday.

What is the best/easiest procedure for a moron like myself to get the
file back into Exchange?

RE: S/MIME

I believe that as long as both parties are using S/MIME you can just
exchange Certificates and put the other government agencies certificates

I have a few questions here that I'd like to put out there. Now, mind
you. I'm not an expert in this field. That's why I'm turning to the
people on this list for advice. With that said.

-Since we have a requirement for secure messaging over the internet with
other government agencies. We would have to get a third party CA to
accomplish this. The other agencies that we would want to communicate
with also would have to go through a third party as well to obtain a CA
so we can transmit messages securely between one another?

-Also, since we also have a requirement for us to have secure messaging
internally. We already have a root CA in place within our organization.
Setting up S/MIME internally isn't that hard. But if we already have
this root CA in place and we needed to obtain a third party CA. How
would we implement this third party CA into our already existing root
CA? I'm sure if there is a way to do this. Are there any docs that
describe how to accomplish this feat?

Thank you,

All,

I'm trying to setup S/MIME since we all of a sudden require message
security within our organization. I'm trying to get an understanding on
how this works in the real world. I've setup a test lab here at work.
But that can only help me understand how to get things done internally.
I'm looking at a braoder scope of allowing our messages to be secure
while passing over the internet to other corporations etc. Can someone
point me in the direction on what I need to read to understand this a
little bit better I'd really appreciate it.

Also, if anyone wants to contact me offline. I have a few questions
that I'd like answered if you have time.

Exchange 2003 OWA default home page

2003-12-04 Thread Simon Bond
I have a test system (thank goodness) that I accidentally deleted the
default web site on (containing the E2003 files). Not the end of the
world I thought, I'll just reinstall Exchange and it'll put all the
files back. Oh no.
What it seems to do (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that it
rebuilds the directory structure of the site in IIS but the default page
it returns when I try to access it from the web (or browsing through
IIS) is the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\iisstart.htm page, which is an error
page. The correct page doesn't seem to be restored by the
reinstallation. Any ideas?

Thanking you in advance,

Simon

Hi,

You can use Ximian Evolution http://www.ximian.com/products/evolution/
with their Exchange Connector http://www.ximian.com/products/connector/
for Exchange 2000 or 20003. The client is free, but the Connector will cost
you. I think it costs around $25US per client. I use Evolution on my linux
desktop, and it has a very Outlook-y feel.

Tried profman2. doesn't create a profile. I do NOT want outlook.
Can't find the old exchange client anywhere. My exchange 200 server
does not have any client installed and I can create a profile no
problem. The e2k3 is the issue.

way
to change this. I need a profile for Arcserves alert service.

Degrag (ESEUTIL) and retention time

2003-12-04 Thread Jean-Francois Bourdeau
Hi

My customer ex 55 has reached the 16 Gb Limit

If now we defrag, gain a couple of hundred megs, mount the store again,
and set the retention time to 0, if we defrag again 24 hours later, will
we gain the space used by the files not really deleted because of the
retention time ?

Thanks

Hi,

You can use Ximian Evolution http://www.ximian.com/products/evolution/
with their Exchange Connector http://www.ximian.com/products/connector/
for Exchange 2000 or 20003. The client is free, but the Connector will
cost
you. I think it costs around $25US per client. I use Evolution on my
linux
desktop, and it has a very Outlook-y feel.

RE: S/MIME

2003-12-04 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
It only works if you know your party's public key. Then you can compose
a message to that person and encrypt it with his/her public key. They
will be able to decrypt it with their private key. You see, the public
key can only encrypt, but private key can both encrypt and decrypt
(public key is different from private key but when they are both applied
to the message they encrypt it the same way, like you can go around the
block this way or that way but you will come to the same point)

Now how do you get your friend's public key so that you could encrypt
messages that you are sending to him/her? Well, he/she must have
his/her own digital certificate, preferably issued by a trusted
authority. Then he/she can send to you a digitally signed message and
you can capture his/her public key from that digitally signed message.
Pretty cumbersome actually and you have to force the other person to
sign up for a digital certificate because you want to send encrypted
mail to that person.

RE: Need Help Restoring a Deleted pub.edb in 5.5

2003-12-04 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
Have people stored any new info in the public folders since then?

If you slide the old pub.edb in there, the new work will be gone.

You probably will be better off restoring that old pub.edb to another
server (in a separate Exchange organization) and then
exporting/importing data from that other server to the production
server.

Boy, do I feel stupid! Please don't pile on -- I'm suffering enough
SHAME
and GUILT already...

Here's my sad story:

On the Friday after Thanksgiving (office closed, I thought I would show
a
little initiative and finally do that ESEUTIL work I had been putting
off
for 18 months. I had shut down Exchange and copied my on my 8gb priv.edb
and 11mb pub.edb to a backup hard drive. Because the ESEUTIL process
aborted halfway through the process on priv.edb, I decided to instead
just
put things back the way they were and go home to discuss the day's
tragic
events with my good friend JACK DANIELS. :)

(Maybe I will revisit ESEUTIL over the Christmas holidays, but that's
another story.)

Anyway, when I came back to work on Monday, I started getting reports
that
the Public Folders were gone. For reasons still unknown to me, I must
have
either MOVED or DELETED pub.edb from its original location.

What is the best/easiest procedure for a moron like myself to get the
file
back into Exchange?

Dumb question - why OWA cannot get to public folder contacts?

2003-12-04 Thread Ron Jameson
Ever since the early days - I always thought at some point, MS would
make the OWA get to all the public folders like outlook (be able to send
email by picking a public folder contact list) but alas, Ex2k3 still has
no access to a public folder contact list. Grr.

I know OWA is meant to be quick, simple and trim - but is this too much
to ask? My workaround is to try the RPC over HTTP featurebut still
need to roll out Office 2003 first at our client sites.

RE: [ex55] Two servers in one domain 1 in another, same site

But it probably would help if those domains trust each other

Do all the exchange servers in a site have to be in the same domain?
All
our sites have always been single server sites until now.

Thanks.

RE: Backup rituals

2003-12-04 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
I think what he meant by to the hour was not to the point of failure
but to any time within any day of the week.

I have seen a number of backup programs (Legato for example) where you
can pick a day and time to which you want to restore. If you were doing
full+incremental or full+differential --- it just restores full and then
only enough transaction logs to get to the required point in time.

With a full all you need is one tape and the transaction logs and you
will be able to restore to the point of failure. It doesn't get any
closer or easier than that.

Wouldn't doing a diff/incremental + weekly full give you a tighter
restore point window (restore to the hour instead of to the day)?

While most any other system is quite happy with incremental backups,
Exchange is one of those that you want to do full backups on always. The
reason being is that incremental do not commit and flush the transaction
logs. Only a full backup will do that. In addition, you will want to
familiarize yourself with this:

re.a

Unless you use a different version of Exchange in which case you will
what to find the appropriate DR whitepaper. You should setup a DR server
to test these processes on. By server I mean any spare PC that has
enough disk space. Just to learn it.

Thanks,
Eric

RE: Outlook 2k3 on XP won't connect to My Exchange 5.5

2003-12-04 Thread Alverson, Tom
If you use caching mode with outlook 2003 and exchange 5.5, then your cache
is limited to 2gig (it cannot use the new enhanced unicode PST format.
This means that if you have anywhere close to 2gig in your server mailbox it
will not work (it will fill up the 2gig of an old style PST then give you an
error). The only workaround is to stop using cache mode or trim your server
storage to much less than 2g (like 1.5gig or less as the PST format is much
less efficient than PSTs)

No. You can use cache mode with any flavor of Exchange.
I believe E2K3 is optimized for it, but it works with any flavor.

So what is the correct answer? To use caching mode do you have to be using
both Outlook 2003 AND Exchange 2003??

Right. All mcary was saying is that he thought you HAD to be using Outlook
2003 with Exchange 2003 in order to use cached mode.

I think what he meant was that he likes the caching mode.
Not necessarily using outlook 2003 with exchange 2003.

Are you using Cached mode with Exchange 5.5? I was under the impression that
you had to running both Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2003 for Cached mode to
work.

This is being sent from Outlook 2003 through a 5.5 server also. It works
fine. Cached mode is cool too.

Outlook 2003 on Windows 2000 works fine on Exchange v5.5 (I'm using it
right
 now!).

Yes, same here.

Also, Outlook 2002 on Windows XP works great for me.

It's just the combination of XP and Outlook 2003 that is causing me
troubles.

Hi

My customer ex 55 has reached the 16 Gb Limit

If now we defrag, gain a couple of hundred megs, mount the store again,
and set the retention time to 0, if we defrag again 24 hours later, will
we gain the space used by the files not really deleted because of the
retention time ?

Thanks

JF

You can also move the database files to another machine and run ESEUTIL
there.

I want to do an eseutil to defragment the IS, but I do not have enough
space on the server to have a second copy on the database.

Can I specify to eseutil to put the temporary copy on a network drive ?
