RE: replay log files for one user?

2004-01-05 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
Replaying logs is not THAT time consuming. But you have to restore the
entire information store and all the logs for the storage group.

No you can't replay logs just for one user.

Have you explored the possibility that your boss was using a POP3 client
from home (or wherever he may have been) and sucked out all the mail
from his mailbox?

Do you have the deleted item retention set? Does your boss' Outlook have
the DumpsterAlwaysOn registry value set? Have you checked the retention
area (while having the Inbox selected)?

Subject: replay log files for one user?

Ex2k SP3
Win2k SP3
OL 2002 SP1

My CEO came into us today and informed us that all of his email is
gone. According to him it was there at 10:05 and gone at 10:10. Of
course he claims that he did not move or delete it, which I have
confirmed. Nothing in the DIR, nothing in trash, or other folders. No
one else has access to his mailbox.

One of our guys is busy trying to figure out what happened. My task has
become to get it back.

I've done DR, but only for a full system. Never a single user. I was
wondering if there is a way to replay the log files for single user or
do I have to put all on my DR box and then drop to a pst from there to
import back into his account?

Your help is appreciated.

Detect unauthorized access to mailbox by administrator

2004-01-05 Thread ricksecure
Hi,

I am a independent consultant hired to investigate an administrator who
the CEO belives he is accessing sensative email from others mailbox.

While it is NOT possible to configure anything on the exchange server, is
there anything I can do a spot-check or any tools like sniffer, so that I
can monitor any possible wrong-doing of the administrator?

If you have any insight on this issue, please kindly drop me a line at

The event logs will show you who's accessing what mailboxes. One way is to check the

RE: Detect unauthorized access to mailbox by administrator

2004-01-05 Thread Dan Bartley
The only way I know of is to increase the logging for the info store to
medium and then look for event 1016 in the application log on the
exchange server. This is generated every time an account accesses a
mailbox that is not its primary mailbox. No amount of permission
granting will stop it from being generated.

You can also look in the Exchange properties for the server mailboxes to
see who last logged on to a particular mailbox.

You could also look in the person's File, Open in Outlook and see if
another mailbox is in the recently accessed list.

Either way you will need to access the Exchange server or the user's
local Outlook.

If wrong doing is suspected, it is appropriate for the CEO to order an
audit of operations and see what comes up.

I'm not aware of any auditing tools that would not require at least
minimal access to the user's logon and workstation or the exchange
server.

Best Regards,

Dan Bartley

Are there any tricks for adding OWA to a new website on an existing

i could find by searching MS Knowledge base were 5.5 specific - I need
this to go on 2000 (Windows + Exchange 2000 - latest service packs and

Unfortunately, 1016s are poor indicators and are generated regardless of
logging level. Increasing the logging level in the IS to max -( Logons or
something similar) cant remember the specific category name off the top of

looking for a scientific explanation

2004-01-05 Thread Fyodorov, Andrey
I have a very strange issue. All of our users use OWA 2000 without
problems, except one. He is at a third-party location (customer site)
which apparently has a firewall (no one knows what kind). When this user
sends mail from OWA, Symantec Antivirus for Exchange detects that the
message has an unscannable attachment and shoots him a warning.

When I log into OWA as this user on my PC and send mail, no problems.

Can a firewall stuff something into an outgoing OWA message that would
cause antivirus to trip?

When I check the IS Logons in ESM when the user is logged on, I can see

RE: Adding OWA 2000 to a different web site (same server)

2004-01-05 Thread Simon Butler
I was doing this on Friday for a client and it took me a couple of hours
to work out.

The way I did it was to create the site in Exchange System Manager, then
create a new virtual directory for Exchange and Public.

Then, once created and seen in Internet Services Manager, I went in to
the properties for the new site, to Home Directory and changed the
address from the BackofficeStorage address to the local directory I had
an existing web site configured in.

Finally to get IIS to serve the existing web pages correctly I removed
davex.dll (IIRC) in the Application Configuration, being careful NOT
to apply the changes to the child nodes by pressing Cancel when
prompted.
I don't think I missed anything, but let me know if I have.
Simon.

All,

Quick question...how do you install S/MIME support for OWA on Exchange
2000? I have it setup for the client side. But I'm having some
problems getting it to work through OWA.

Thanks,

RE: Archiving Contacts Folder

I have a user who is trying to add her contacts to her archive folder.
There isn't an archive option under the properties for Contacts. Manually
archiving didn't work either. I just wanted to verify that archiving
Contacts wasn't possible. You would either have to do an export or manual
copy.

What are you trying to accomplish?

According the info I was able to get out of him, yes.

When I check the IS Logons in ESM when the user is logged on, I can see
two lines for him. One says HTTP and the other one says Win32. I only
expected to see HTTP, I wonder what Win32 means in this context.

RE: getting heaps of spams

2004-01-05 Thread Jees

Ed, thanks for your response. Getting spams on my
exchange is a daily retual to me, however, not as much
as 4000 or more spam emails withing the hour.

Last time, when i had such a high volume of spam, we
had a look at \\exchange server\tracking.log and
figured out that one of the exchange server within the
enterprise had open for relaying. I can't remember now
how we worked it out then, but probably experienced
heaps of entries from the spamming exchange server.

Hope i am making sense.

RE: getting heaps of spams

2004-01-05 Thread Ed Crowley [MVP]
Being open for relay won't get you more spam, but it will enable others to
send spam using your machine. There's an important difference. If you're
receiving lots of spam then you might want to look at an antispam product to
install on your Exchange server, or between it and the Internet, or
contracting with an antispam solution provider.

If your server is open for relay, close it!

Re: getting heaps of spams

2004-01-05 Thread Jees
let me see if i can explain my issue better this time!

I am using Trend Micro ScanMail E manager which has
content filtering enabled, also running real-time
scanner on exchange server.

The problem is that all these exchange servers within
the enterprise (located different regions of the world
)have trusts between them and my exchange server will
not stop anything that comes via another trusted
exchange box -that sits, say in China etc.

If Exchange server in China has relay open, its not
that box in china that gets spammed (as correctly
pointed by Ed) but mine or other.

We probably need to do something about this trusting
between boxes.

RE: Adding OWA 2000 to a different web site (same server)

2004-01-05 Thread Greg S
Thanks. I tried it both ways (creating the web from Internet Services
Manager and creating it from Exchange Systems Manager). At first I
tried it in Internet Services Manager, and it was not working - I had
missed the step of adding davex.dll - I had to hit the create button to
get to the application setup to add davex, once that was done it worked
(I had to do it on several virtual webs that were OWA components)

One other thing - when I tried creating the virtual web from Exchange
System Manager as you suggested it worked, however when I change the
home directory path to the root path I wanted, twice it changed itself
back to M:\twostep.tzo.net\MBX and I know it was not my doing. So I'm
wondering if Exchange somehow changes that back if it was created within
Exchange.

I ended up making it work correctly with the web I created in ISM and
once I got all of the settings in line, OWA seems to work great.

Thanks for your help.

Greg

Simon.

Are there any tricks for adding OWA to a new website on an existing
IIS/Exchange 2000 server? I think i sort of have it working by
creating the website from within Exchange administrator - but that set
up OWA as the root of the web - ideally i'd like OWA to work from a
virtual web /exchange as it does on the Default web server. Only docs
i could find by searching MS Knowledge base were 5.5 specific - I need
this to go on 2000 (Windows + Exchange 2000 - latest service packs and
patches all around...)Also whatever I do, hoping it will work when i
Upgrade to Exchange 2003 followed by Windows 2003 sometime this
spring...

Thanks

Greg

RE: getting heaps of spams

2004-01-05 Thread Ed Crowley [MVP]
An open relay shouldn't get you spammed any more than usual. It allows you
to be used to spam everyone else in the world, though. Perhaps you don't
really understand what you're saying about being an open relay.

Subject: Re: getting heaps of spams

let me see if i can explain my issue better this time!

I am using Trend Micro ScanMail E manager which has content filtering
enabled, also running real-time scanner on exchange server.

The problem is that all these exchange servers within the enterprise
(located different regions of the world )have trusts between them and my
exchange server will not stop anything that comes via another trusted
exchange box -that sits, say in China etc.

If Exchange server in China has relay open, its not that box in china that
gets spammed (as correctly pointed by Ed) but mine or other.

We probably need to do something about this trusting between boxes.

Ed, thanks for your response. Getting spams on
 my
exchange is a daily retual to me, however, not
 as
   much
as 4000 or more spam emails withing the hour.

Last time, when i had such a high volume of
 spam, we
had a look at \\exchange server\tracking.log and figured out that
   one of the exchange server
 within
   the
enterprise had open for relaying. I can't
 remember
   now
how we worked it out then, but probably
 experienced
heaps of entries from the spamming exchange
 server.

   Hope i am making sense.
