RE: Common Exchange 2000 problems
As far as the slowness of OWA it is usually a resource issue. I have heard if OWA slows down it is because many users are hitting the IIS portion of your server. It is then time to look at a separate IIS server to offload that service. Let Exchange sit by itself no DC or any other service. -Original Message- From: Andy David [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2002 8:07 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Common Exchange 2000 problems .Remember that AOL sucks I think that is valid for any size installation! -Original Message- From: Tom.Gray [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2002 9:02 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Common Exchange 2000 problems Tony - We just completed the switch. We're just a small site (single exchange server). I'd like to see a summary of any private responses you get! Biggest problem we've had has been with the new improved Outlook Web Access. Users have had problems with it being EXTREMELY slow. Slow as in 2-3 minutes to open from a dial-up connection. Even worse with AOL connections. Here's our short troubleshooting list for OWA: 1. Make sure user has IE version 6 (some versions of 5.5 seem to just get stuck) 2. Make sure user does NOT have IE content advisor enabled 3. For XP users, the user must put domainname\username in the username box (we haven't gotten the default domain name to work in this instance and XP won't show the domain field on the login) This is actually good for all users to start using! 4. Remember that AOL sucks. Since AOL dialup doesn't use TCP/IP, each packet from a dialup user must be encapsulated inside an AOL packet, which is then unpacked at the AOL system before it hits the internet. When a packet comes back from your server to the client, AOL encapsulates the packet from the Internet and then delivers it to the dialup system (which unpacks it and passes it back to the client browser). The IMPORTANT part of this is the fact that when a packet is encapsulated it might not fit into a single AOL packet [most of the time it won't] so you end up sending twice the number of packets. So a user dialing into Earthlink at 28.8 might take 10-15 seconds to open an OWA session, but same user dialing into AOL at 28.8 might take 20-30 seconds! Actual times for FIRST session with AOL for us is about 2 minutes, SECOND session takes 30 seconds because of the cached graphics. 5. Remembering that dialup is slow to begin with, make sure you don't have your SSL key set to 4096 bit length. This will really slow down your users. -Original Message- From: EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 10, 2002 3:23 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Common Exchange 2000 problems After a company has moved and installed Exchange 2000, not including any of the migration, upgrade or installation problems. I extracted all the messages that have certain words in the subject. Easy enough. But the lawyers would like to know if we could put all the extracted messages in one pst for each monthly restore. There are about 7 servers and with two years of data that is alot of PST's. What they would want is one PST for each monthly restore for each server. Does that make sense. I told them it may not be possible. So there you have it. They either open dozens of PST's that have the subject data or one PST for each month. What a mess but it beats unemployment. Anyhow I am using Backup Exec and Tivoli and most any combo of Exchange 5.5 running on 2000 or NT4.0 you can think of. Plus we are installing new servers and migrating to E2K. There is a Q article on MS site that tells exactly how to setup. Also if it is a SSL from Verisign or some other vendor, they should have sent the step by steps along with the SSL. RE: Diskkeeper and Exchange- My experience
Well I once told Wal-Mart's (Exchange 5.5) Senior Exchange man that defrag wasn't really necessary unless there where performance issues or temp. disk space issues. Well he said that MS says run it so that's what they do. I was interviewing for the job and he said anyone who doesn't run Defrag on a regular maintenance is not following MS's recommendation and is asking for problems. Well I argued a bit but then realized I lost the job. My point is, if it makes you happy fine. Run the eseutil /d utility. But if you are only seeing MBs of space you would regain, forget about it. It's not worth the time nor is it worth the resources needed to perform the task (Exchange Server must be offline; Users will not have access to their mailboxes while you are performing this task; you will have to watch the damn thing to make sure it doesn't error out half-way through the process, and then have to kick it off again). Restarting IS fixed the memory usage but not the CPU usage. So I killed DiskKeeper 7 which I had running in smart schedule mode. But it took me a few hours to figure that it was the process using all the CPU. (It took me a bit of time to take a clear look and not run around like a chicken with it's head cut off. And yes I learned a thing or two). So then read a bit and e-mailed exec. Software. They indicate that I should not have to exclude any files from the DK defrag process and that they had no further info on what could have happened. And they also indicate that I should run an offline defrag of exchange using DK once a month or so. Of course I asked for data to support this suggestion as it seems many folks here never use the exchange offline defrag. Move mailbox log data
When you use Move Mailbox on Exchange 5.5, does anybody know if the event log shows a record of that or does it write it to a log somewhere. If so does the information reside on the server where Move Mailbox was run or is it on both servers? Reason is customer moved mailboxes to new server. They then wiped clean old servers. They now need to do a restore from where the old mailboxes originally resided. Without building each old server and restoring the databases, is there a way to find the original home server without doing a rebuild? Currently do not have a setup to test this. Any helpful ideas? It only happens at logon and for one user took 20 mins to login in to Outlook, no errors were generated by the client. Our mailboxes are limited to 60 MB so it is not a size issue and I have checked the mailboxes myself and can always log onto them without any problems. Looking at the domain controllers is rather tricky, we in the mail team have rights over our Exchange servers that are in a resource domain I can look at the event logs of these servers and no errors are generated. Another team look after all the servers from an OS point of view and I don't have permission to look at the DC's in the user domain. That was why I was trying to get something that would indicate where the problem is for Outlook logging on and then work with the team responsible, whether that be server, netcom or Unix for DNS teams. Once this is found it will then authenticate the mailbox against the NT domain. Here is my question, I have a small number of random users, about 20 out of 8000, that experience Outlook hanging at logon. This doesn't always happen i.e. we can go for several days without any problem, then we start getting calls again, it will be completely random, hardly ever effecting the same user twice. Nslookup can resolve the name of the server and it can be successfully pinged. My hunch is therefore is it maybe a authentication issue. So here is my question is their anyway to log Outlook as it logs on, or can I use any other MAPI tool to logon to test the logon process of the affected mailbox to the server. Or should I use exmerge or can I use the alternate method of copying the edb files? If i copy the edb, how to I get the data in that into the exch2k edb files? Would I also be correct in assuming that if I use the migration wizard, then the user accounts will also be created? Has anyone ran a similar migration before? This will be tested 1st of course. RE: Exchange 5.5 to 2000 Upgrade horror story
Or why not install a new server with E2k and join the site. Then move mailboxes. In place upgrades are plain scary if you can not test before hand. When you do upgrade in place will all your AV and Backups work the same way. Too much to chance I agree with Ryan. -Original Message- From: Ryan Malayter [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 02, 2002 2:18 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange 5.5 to 2000 Upgrade horror story I don't mean to rub salt into your wounds, but many of the gurus on this list frequently mention the need for a lab environment, even if it consist of only a couple of older PCs. Your situation could have been avoided if you restored your AD and exchange 5.5 into a 2-PC lab environment, and performed a test upgrade there. I was able to identify several items (mostly permissions related) from my lab upgrade experience that needed attention before the in-place Ex2k upgrade in my production environment. -Original Message- From: Tom.Gray [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Friday, August 02, 2002 11:41 AM Posted To: Exchange List Conversation: Exchange 5.5 to 2000 Upgrade horror story Subject: Exchange 5.5 to 2000 Upgrade horror story This is just an informational post, you're welcome to comment on it but I'm not really asking any questions. Just thought folks out there getting ready to upgrade might want to hear the story. I just spent the night upgrading (or trying to upgrade) my exchange 5.5 server. We have a very simple network. 1 domain. 200 users. 1 exchange server. 2 domain controllers (not the exchange server). Started about 2 weeks ago prepping for upgrade. Armed with: White Paper in-place upgrade from msoft exchange 5.5 to msoft exchange 2000 Q316886 How To: Migrate from exchange server 5.5 to exchange 2000 server Q282309 upgrading exchange server 5.5 service pack 4 to exchange 2000 server Q295922 considerations when you upgrade to exchange 2000 server Q296260 how to configure a two-way recipient connection agreement for exchange server 5.5 users Q253829 description of the active directory connector deletion mechanism And, of course, monitored this list (and the sun-exchange) one for upgrade ideas! Now some of the documents have conflicting information. If you weed thru the dates and such you can usually figure out what is really true. For example, the white paper states you MUST have at least one domain running in native mode, but the HOW TO describes a scenario where all domains are in mixed mode. With the domain controllers upgraded to win2k active directory (mixed mode) last month I tackled the exchange upgrade this month. Went thru the white paper and how to, updating the schema (forestprep and domainprep) and ran all the tests listed in those docs to verify it was working. Got exactly the results they told me! First time I ran the actual upgrade got my first rude surprise. My vendor had shipped me the Exchange 2000 standard edition media (which doesn't really say standard on it, just Exchange 2000) and the upgrade process stopped immediately with You can't go from enterprise to standard you idiot Two days later I have the correct media. Take the server off the network and run an online backup (Veritas backup exec with exchange option). Verify the backup worked. With exchange services down get back on the network and run domain tests again. Everything ok! Run the upgrade! The upgrade goes thru several processes but hangs at Setup failed while installing sub-component Site Replication Service with error code 0xC007041D -- retry or cancel search MS knowledge base and looks like a permissions issue (Q278254 and Q273730). Hmm, make sure the exchange service account has all the permissions and click retry. Still no work. Rats. Getting late so time to make the $250 call to PSS! PSS steps me thru lots of stuff, nothing works. They have me change the service account user permissions at the ORG container from CUSTOM to SERVICE ACCOUNT (i'm probably not saying this exactly correct). Still no joy. Try to cancel out of that error message. Nada. Have to task manager/shut down process. They then refer me to the ultimate nightmare: Q264309 - How to Roll Back A failed Upgraded from Exchange Server 5.5. to Exchange 2000. Yuck. Go into registry and delete the stuff, rename the exchsrvr folders, uninstall IIS, restart server, install IIS, re-apply all service packs and hotfixes (that really sucks), delete the renamed exchsrvr folders, setup /r exchange 5.5, restore directory and info store. Restoring directory service doesn't work. Call PSS back. Directory service was trying to start and got hung, can't restore to hung service. Change to manual start and reboot. Directory restores!!! Restore info store. (8 gigs). 2 hours later ready to go! (almost) Now the internet mail connector isn't working. Dawn is breaking and panic begins to creep in.

RE: Calendar issues in E2K
The one experience I had had to do when a user logged into his NT4 domain was trying to access a calendar of someone else. All users had a E2K mailbox setup. The only way to get users to see other calendars when logged into a NT4 domain with a E2K mailbox was to give full rights to that mailbox on the AD side. But this gave them access to all folders. When they are logged into a 2000 domain everthing worked fine. Hope this helps. -Original Message- From: Pillai, Raj [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 11:00 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Calendar issues in E2K Give full access to all? -Original Message- From: EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 10:03 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Calendar issues in E2K I think you will find the same issue with other mailbox folders such as tasks, notes, etc. Two different security schemas. Calendar Issues
I have heard from my new emplyer that they have been told that when they upgrade to E2K from 5.5 they may have issues with calendar functions not working 100%. Things like free/busy not working right. i am trying to remember if this was a early problem with E2K that has been resolved with the SP's. Or is this an old wives tale.
