Scenario:

NT 4.0 SP6a SRP
Exchange 5.5 SP4

My bridgehead server is receiving GAL changes from other sites,
but is not
replicating this info to the other servers in my site.
However, if I make a
change on one of the other servers, the bridgehead does get the change.

Any ideas on what to look for or what to try?

Thanks.

I think they count how many bad addresses are in a list and if
too many they
terminate connection (and maybe temporarily blacklist you)

I've had trouble when users send mail to a DL that contains numerous
contacts w/ hotmail addresses. Anyone know if there's a limit
on how many
addresses a message can be sent to at hotmail before an
anti-spam threshold
kicks in? Needless to say, the message my user wants to send out is most
definately not spam. Jeremy

Hi all. I am having intermittent problems sending to Hotmail.
Some of the
Hotmail servers seem to reject connections. If I send a message
3-4 times,
eventually it hits a good Hotmail server and gets delivered.

Has anyone else seen such behavior recently?

Hi,

If I look in the ACtive-directory Computers and Users console,
I see that one
of the users (that can open other mailboxes) is a domain-user,
and also members
of some distribution lists I setup.

But if I use explorer, I see that under M:\ -> DOMAIN -> MBX ->
UserName ->
Inbox has the group "everybody" with full rights (!)

I am not sure how this happened but I'd like to know how to change it.

Actually I'm trying to resolve the mailbox when the user opens
Outlook. In the past we would put the Distinguished Name in
the "Mailbox:" box in setting up the profile. Then by clicking
"Check Name", the name would resolve to the user's mailbox.
Now that doesn't work and I was wondering if anyone found a
workaround for this.

In Exchange 5.5 it was possible to resolve a hidden user based on the
Distinguished Name. Is it possible to do something similar with
Exchange 2000? We have students who for one reason or another do not
want to have their e-mail address published in the GAL. So far, I've
only found articles talking about how Outlook resolves the user name
based on the GAL. If anyone out there in Guru Land has some ideas or
suggestions, I'm all ears.

is there 3rd

a count of

Is there a way using Exchange 5.5 on a NT4 platform (current with all
service packs) to monitor the activity of a mailbox? If not,
is there 3rd
party software available to do this? Management is looking for
a count of
emails daily in and out of users mailboxes. I'm sure that more
information
than simply a count would be a bonus to them.

Hello Everyone,

There are two domains with two different exchange orgs. One is
exchange 2000 (xxx.com), one is 5.5 (yyy.com).

We are in the process of migrating users from the 5.5
domain/org to the 2000 domain/org. We have an SMTP connector
setup currently to send all emails to yyy.com from our org
through a VPN connection.

We just migrated about 20 users from one remote office onto our
exchange server. (dumped their emails into a PST and imported
them into a new account at xxx.com)

We put [EMAIL PROTECTED] as their primary SMTP address, but
added [EMAIL PROTECTED] so they can still receive emails to the
old address for a while.

Well now people that send them emails are getting a bounce
message with the following.. X-Display-Name: lastname,
firstname - MOVED.

I tried to create a new recipient policy but I don't know if
I'm doing it right. Anyone have a step by step on how to do
this by chance? I'm going through the help files now but
thought I would ask the experts here.

Thanks in advance.

All,

I'm having a weird problem when migrating mailboxes from one
Exchange server
to another. I'm in mixed mode right now and it doesn't matter
if I move a
mailbox between 5.5->E2K. Or E2K-E2K. But what seems to
happen is once
the mailbox is moved admins who have been manually added to their bosses
calendar for viewing lose their permissions to view the
calendar. Once you
re-add them it works fine. Now is there something I'm missing
when moving
mailboxes that would prevent this from occuring? I've heard that the
permissions should stay intact during a move. But it doesn't
seem to be the
case here. I've had 2 occurences happen so far one mailbox moving from
5.5->E2K and E2K->E2K. Can anyone shed any light on this?

TIA,

Subject: Internal Exchange Name vs. external Internet Address/Name

Hi All,

Is there a way to have Outlook NOT rename the Exchange Server after it
resolved the server address?

Our situation:
Internally, the server is named MAIL
It can be reached via the web at TEST.company.com
When we configure Outlook, we enter TEST.company.com and it
validates the
user... Then it changes the server name to MAIL.

Of course, Outlook will no longer work because the address MAIL
is not valid
on the net.

We have 2 solutions, but we do not like either:
1) Add HOSTS table entry on remote machines (but then they fail
internally)
2) Require VPN connection

Of course, had I foreseen this issue, I would have named the
Exchange server
TEST.company.com to begin with (assuming that is even possible).

Thanks for any ideas/insight,
David

RE: Common Exchange 2000 problems

2002-09-11 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

As far as the slowness of OWA it is usually a resource issue. I have heard
if OWA slows down it is because many users are hitting the IIS portion of
your server. It is then time to look at a separate IIS server to offload
that service. Let Exchange sit by itself no DC or any other service.

Tony -

We just completed the switch. We're just a small site (single exchange
server).
I'd like to see a summary of any private responses you get!

Biggest problem we've had has been with the new improved
Outlook Web Access.
Users have had problems with it being EXTREMELY slow. Slow as in 2-3
minutes to open from a dial-up connection. Even worse with AOL
connections.
Here's our short troubleshooting list for OWA:
1. Make sure user has IE version 6 (some versions of 5.5 seem
to just get
"stuck")
2. Make sure user does NOT have IE content advisor enabled
3. For XP users, the user must put domainname\username in the
username box

instance and
XP won't show the "domain" field on the login)
This is actually good for all users to start using!
4. Remember that AOL sucks. Since AOL dialup doesn't use TCP/IP, each
packet from a dialup user must be encapsulated inside an AOL
packet, which
is then "unpacked" at the AOL system before it hits the
internet. When a
packet comes back from your server to the client, AOL encapsulates the
packet from the Internet and then delivers it to the dialup
system (which
unpacks it and passes it back to the client browser). The
IMPORTANT part of
this is the fact that when a packet is encapsulated it might
not fit into a
single AOL packet [most of the time it won't] so you end up
sending twice
the number of packets. So a user dialing into Earthlink at
28.8 might take
10-15 seconds to open an OWA session, but same user dialing
into AOL at 28.8
might take 20-30 seconds!
Actual times for FIRST session with AOL for us is about 2
minutes, SECOND
session takes 30 seconds because of the cached graphics.
5. Remembering that dialup is slow to begin with, make sure
you don't have
your SSL key set to 4096 bit length. This will really slow
down your users.

Exchange server 5.5: disaster recovery
Has anyone recover MS Exchange server at a disaster recovery
site. We are
in the process of implementing a disaster recovery procedure and would
like to know whether we can recover to a different Compaq hardware.
Rather than reinstalling the OS, we would like to restore
everything from
the backup tape. Our exchange server is currently installed on a Compaq
Presario 1600. Our recovery site has Compaq DL 380.

That's what I thought might be the driving force... One issue related to
this strategy is that if messages were sent via Bcc or to a DL
it might not
be possible to determine from a single PST file which mailbox
contained the
data in question.

I recently spent a boatload of time exploring similar restore
scenarios...
One relatively powerful and inexpensive[1] option to consider is using
kvault for this task.

[1] Inexpensive compared to the labor and time costs I estimated for the
methodology you are currently employing. It also positions you well for
future discovery.

interviewing for the job and he said anyone who doesn't run Defrag on a
regular maintenance is not following MS's recommendation and is asking for
problems. Well I argued a bit but then realized I lost the job. My point is,
if it makes you happy fine. But I would only use for the two fore mentioned

If you can look in your Event Viewer and see that the online
defrag Exchange
does overnight will give you back 20-30GB of space, go for it. Run the
eseutil /d utility. But if you are only seeing MBs of space you would
regain, forget about it. It's not worth the time nor is it worth the
resources needed to perform the task (Exchange Server must be
offline; Users
will not have access to their mailboxes while you are
performing this task;
you will have to watch the damn thing to make sure it doesn't error out
half-way through the process, and then have to kick it off again). I
wouldn't take the chance unless I was gaining back something sizeable.

Just my .02¢

As noted before I found my store.exe at 500,000 K this morning
( An exchange
server for 25 people) and the CPU at 100%. Restarting IS fixed
the memory
usage but not the CPU usage. So I killed DiskKeeper 7 which I
had running
in "smart schedule" mode. But it took me a few hours to figure
that it was
the process using all the CPU. (It took me a bit of time to
take a clear
look and not run around like a chicken with it's head cut off.
And yes I
learned a thing or two). So then read a bit and e-mailed exec. Software.
They indicate that I should not have to exclude any files from
the DK defrag
process and that they had no further info on what could have
happened. And
they also indicate that I should run an offline defrag of
exchange using DK
once a month or so. Of course I asked for data to support this
suggestion
as it seems many folks here never use the exchange offline defrag.

I have an Exchange 2000 SP2 box, fresh install onto Win2k SP2.

The M drive doesn't show in explorer, etc, as expected after SP2.

However, I have installed an SSL certificate on IIS, and I want to turn
on the secure channel required option for the Exchange VD, but I can't,
because when I select the directory security tab for the VD, it tells me
that 'the path does not exist or is not a directory'

The VD shows as a normal icon in ISM, not a red X like you sometimes
see.

Help?

maybe.

RE: Move mailbox log data

2002-08-27 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

I am doing this for a customer. I have plenty of restores. Just I always
knew which servers needed restoring. Anyhow on the bright side they used
Backup Exec and Tivoli more recently. So far so good but boy what a
boring/tedious thing to do. One thing for sure I will know disaster recovery
and restores backwards and sideways after doing approx. a dozen or so
servers over a 2 year period.

Move mailbox log data

2002-08-27 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

When you use Move Mailbox on Exchange 5.5, does anybody know if the event
log shows a record of that or does it write it to a log somewhere. If so
does the information reside on the server where Move Mailbox was run or is
it on both servers? Reason is customer moved mailboxes to new server. They
then wiped clean old servers. They now need to do a restore from where the
old mailboxes originally resided. Without building each old server and
restoring the databases, is there a way to find the original home server
without doing a rebuild? Currently do not have a setup to test this. Any
helpful ideas?

RE: Old priv.edb restoral

2002-08-19 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

You can use a 2000 server with Exchange 5.5 on it. If you do not access to a
NT4.0 box, you can load 5.5 (same SP' loaded) on a 2000 server. You may need
to use Q224977 to get the store to start. Follow the instruction exactly it
worked for me.

RE: exmerge or not?

2002-08-15 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

I have found one caveat when running Exmerge in Batch mode (latest version).
If you state which folder to put the PST files and if it does not exist it
will create it for you and put the PST files there. If you state which
folder to place the log file and if it does not exist, it will not create it
and put the info in the default location.

Error starting the IS

2002-08-13 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

Doing a restore/recovery project that dates backs two years. They are not
certain when Service patches were applied to either the Exchange 5.5 server
or the MS 2000 server Exchange was running on. Will this keep me from
starting the IS store so exmerge can do it's thing. I feel that different
SP's applied in Exchange may not allow but not the OS SP's. Any experience
with this, besides I think they will now document and date all changes.

RE: Exchange 5.5 to 2000 Upgrade horror story

2002-08-02 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

Or why not install a new server with E2k and join the site. Then move
mailboxes. In place upgrades are plain scary if you can not test before
hand. When you do upgrade in place will all your AV and Backups work the
same way. Too much to chance I agree with Ryan.

RE: Bulk changes to permissions

2002-08-02 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

As a contractor here they said they had to manually change a group of about
300 users back to "user" as their role under the Permissions tab when you
bring up the mailbox properties. Some how they got changed for reason they
did not explain. The users could not login. They told me they changed each
one by hand. I told them why didn't you just create a batch to do it based
on the users who couldn't login. I was told it would not work on permission
roles for individual mailboxes.

Bulk changes to permissions

2002-08-02 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

The users belong to different groups and the item that needs changing is
their permissions/rights on their mailbox. The environment is Exchange 5.5
running on MS Server 2000. Would like to do this via some program as opposed
to manually doing it. Have not had to do this before. Has anyone had to do
this. I am thinking LDAP export or something like that but would rather
click from a list and change/add permissions. NetIQ?

You're correct in thinking that the directory name is what you need. You
might try leaving out the commas, leaving just the slash separators in your
strings.

Subject: Exmerge mailbox extraction in batch mode.

I am extracting a number of mailboxes, using multiple tapes, from a recovery
server to PSTs. To ease the process I am trying to use the batch method. I
correctly changed the exmerge.ini file to use a the file "mailboxes.txt",
where the directory names belong. The recovery server is a standalone MS
2000 server running Exchange 5.5. I can run in interactive mode just fine
with no errors. Interactive shows Display and Aliase Names from which to
choose from and Batch is looking for Directory Names. I have a feeling my
string is incorrect in the mailbox file.

Exmerge -b -f c:\exmerge.ini

Part of message in error log

[13:50:46] Error creating EntryID for
'/o=bosch/ou=mail34/cn=receipents/cn=Paul.Borkowski' (GetMailboxInfoFromAB)

Examples of strings that have failed.

Example#1

ski

Example#2
o=bosch,ou=mail34,cn=servers,cn=sbdmail01,cn=recipients,cn=Paul.Borkowski

Also note that the MS2000 server is not a DC and I do not have access to one
in the Lab. I have a feeling that is it.

Exmerge mailbox extraction in batch mode.

2002-07-27 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

I am extracting a number of mailboxes, using multiple tapes, from a recovery
server to PSTs. To ease the process I am trying to use the batch method. I
correctly changed the exmerge.ini file to use a the file "mailboxes.txt",
where the directory names belong. The recovery server is a standalone MS
2000 server running Exchange 5.5. I can run in interactive mode just fine
with no errors. Interactive shows Display and Aliase Names from which to
choose from and Batch is looking for Directory Names. I have a feeling my
string is incorrect in the mailbox file.

Exmerge -b -f c:\exmerge.ini

Part of message in error log

[13:50:46] Error creating EntryID for
'/o=bosch/ou=mail34/cn=receipents/cn=Paul.Borkowski' (GetMailboxInfoFromAB)
[13:50:46] Error accessing directory object for
'/o=bosch/ou=mail34/cn=receipents/cn=Paul.Borkowski'. Ignoring this mailbox.
No valid mailboxes were specified in the file 'mailboxes.txt'.

[14:02:16] Error creating EntryID for 'o=bosch ou=mail34 cn=recipients

[14:02:16] Error accessing directory object for 'o=bosch ou=mail34
cn=recipients cn=Paul.Borkowski'. Ignoring this mailbox.
No valid mailboxes were specified in the file 'mailboxes.txt'.

Examples of strings that have failed.

Example#1
/o=bosch/,ou=mail34/,cn=servers/,cn=sbdmail01/,cn=recipients/,cn=Paul.Borkow
ski

Example#2
o=bosch,ou=mail34,cn=servers,cn=sbdmail01,cn=recipients,cn=Paul.Borkowski

Also note that the MS2000 server is not a DC and I do not have access to one
in the Lab. I have a feeling that is it.

Seems to be necessary to improve Exchange 2000 system an make a recover
of recover of recover deleted items ...an in the top o recovering policy
must be set never delete anything until the company is out of business
or maybe keep one year after.

To implement the above solution please spend 1000 USD buying 4 - 120 HDD
SCSI drives to make daily back-up of "Items that should never be
deleted".

Please ask every user that delete something to sign proper papers in
each ...bla bla bla .

At the end all exchange users who deleted something and empty deleted
items and the empty also the recover table must be shouted in the mouth
by the admin.

Please use 9 mm vidia bullets !
Call me, I heave on stock

/me

A lot of initials from a lot of certificates Who make me feel
smarter tha anyone in this list and I used in auto signature ...bla bla

This sucks !

Already did that...

Applied the tweak to my workstation, gave myself service account
privileges, added her to my profile and opened her Deleted items. The
messages weren't there.

Told her to contact the person(s) she sent them to and have them forward
a copy back to her.

She learned a hard lesson, but oh well...

you don't even need to do that. just apply the tweak to a workstation,
create a MAPI profile for her mailbox on that workstation, go to the
folder from whence she deleted the items this morning, and recover them.
if they are not there, then she must have deleted them from the
dumpster. (or synched up an old *ost in reverse, perhaps? i think i've
seen that, too.)

test by deleting another message and recovering. test on another
mailbox. go do it, man!

I was given a beta copy of the exmerge from sp3 a couple month's ago to
resolve issues w/ exportation of double byte characters (that sp2
exmerge had problems with). The MS tech also said there were other
"fixes" in the beta version, so I would assume that the release version
is definitely different.

My question: Is there a 3rd party tool anyone recommends to block spam ? I'm
looking for something for the Microsoft Windows platform. I found plenty for
UNIX and LINUX...
In answer to your question:
The TURF Directory has to be created and does not exist by default. The
default entry is C:\Turfdir but you can change the path by altering a
registry entry. Look on the MS KBase for this registry entry..don't remember
it.
Don't forget to restart the IMS as well as the IS after you do change the
message filtering options and after you create the folder.

Subject: Stopping Spam

I have 3 questions. I know I can block Spam from a particular sender, or
block all the senders from a certain domain, using Message Filting in
Exchange 5.5. I got a list of individual address from the Junk senders
list and Adult senders list but the domains all seem to be different.

1. Do I have to put them individually or can I "import" them some how?
2. Also does anyone have a list of Spam domains that I can put in, in
addition to the address I already have?
3. Where is the folder called "Turf" suppose to be in MS Exchange 5.5,
where all of the filtered e-mails are suppose to go. I did a search for
it
and it didn't find it.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

RE: Calendar issues in E2K

2002-07-24 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

The one experience I had had to do when a user logged into his NT4 domain
was trying to access a calendar of someone else. All users had a E2K mailbox
setup. The only way to get users to see other calendars when logged into a
NT4 domain with a E2K mailbox was to give full rights to that mailbox on the
AD side. But this gave them access to all folders. When they are logged into
a 2000 domain everthing worked fine. Hope this helps.

Hello everyone,

E2k(sp2) and Ex55(sp4) in mixed mode in NT and 2000 domain with 2 way trust.

I am facing an issue here with seeing others calendar. Since I have Admin
rights I can see others calendar without any issues. As a domain user with
regular permissions I CANNOT see other users calendar when I am logged in to
the 2000 domain. If logged in to the NT domain as a user I CAN see others
calendars!!.
Here is what I have done so far:
-Assign Read write permissions to domain users group in Mailbox store and
Public folder store, which in turn propogates additional relevant
permissions.
- Assign Read write permission for Domain users on the Exchsrvr folder.

I have tried adding the everyone group and assigning permissions, but does
not seem to be working, Did not find anything in Msknowledgebase except
Q282964 which was not too helpful
Anyone has faced this situation before? Any ideas or suggestions? My next
stop would be PSS.

Thanks

Raj

pages? Under OWA for ex 5.5 we were able
to make custom pages for our company. I take it that there is nothing that
can be done under Ex2000 - other than replace the

on a though ping-ponging in my head... Since E2K has this inseparable family
issue unlike 55..
isn't it a pain ... IF you are going to expose the E2K OWA to the Net... to
harden the IIS portion of the box???
I'm thinking...like in my 55 envir... my OWA/IIS4 is on a sep. box from the
55 exch. Thus I have done quite a few of the recommended harding of IIS4 as
described in the MS white paper & so on.. on improving security on the
IIS/nt4 box.. with this if you follow a lot of the recommendations...you end
up moving quite a few EXE,etc out of the WINNT dir to a new separate dir
with diff security...
Would say following the MS white paper for IIS "break" the E2K portion of
the box?

yeh I know..put my foot in the water..fined out..let us know
Have not had time yet...but the though continues in my head...

anyone have exp on this?

thx
bill

Um... as was discussed earlier this week, E2K, IIS and OWA are inseperable.

Calendar Issues

2002-07-23 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

I have heard from my new emplyer that they have been told that when they
upgrade to E2K from 5.5 they may have issues with calendar functions not
working 100%. Things like free/busy not working right. i am trying to
remember if this was a early problem with E2K that has been resolved with
the SP's. Or is this an old wives tale.
