Upgrade 5.5 to 2003

2004-01-08 Thread Jerry J.
Running Exchange 5.5 on 2000 Server and upgrading to SBS 2003. I assume
that I will want to upgrade exchange to 2003 first (after running ADC)
then upgrading the OS to 2003. Or in this scenario will I be better off
just creating a new server altogether? (Hardware is not an issue) (This
server will also assume the domain master roles, be internal DNS be a DC
etc) Being forced to merge alot of servers into one since we updated
hardware from P3 500 systems.

Relaying problem (not quite sure)

2003-09-09 Thread Jerry J.
Exchange 5.5. I have relaying restricted to only my internal network.
There are a few domains that I had to allow to relay to. Example, system
somewhere remote needs to send an alert. The computer connects to my SMTP
server over the net and tries to send the alert and hits a wall. I enter
in mydomain.com to ignore restrictions and all is well. But the systems
manager at the remote site wants the e-mail as well so I enter his domain
to ignore restrictions and all is well. Tested it and if there is any
other domain in the e-mail list for the alert, the entire thing gets
dumped and no one is alerted. This is what I wanted.
So back to the problem, I am seeing since last week alot of NDR's sent to
my postmasters mailbox that (somerandomgarbage)@mydomain.com could not be
delivered. Most of them come from AOL addresses. Now am I being relayed
thru?
What should I look at first? From my slight knowledge I am secured from
relaying because I cannot get a remote machine to relay thru my server.
But I know there is always a way.

Postmaster question

2003-09-03 Thread Jerry J.
Silly question but I cannot find what I am looking for. I have postmaster
set up to goto my mailbox but I am not getting anything to it. I even send
a mail to a known bad address and I never get anything to postmaster.
Where in exchange 2k do I find how to turn this on if its not on by
default. I can send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and get it fine
but not getting any NDR's or the like.

Relaying in 5.5 and 2k question

2003-03-06 Thread Jerry J.
In 5.5 I can set up in the routing tab of the IMS to reroute incoming SMTP
mail, sent to whatever domain to relay, overriding relay restrictions even
tho the mail is coming from another site. Where is this in 2k? I was able
to see some things that were close but not quite what I needed and
tinkering with them I could not get them to work. This functionality was
perfect for our needs and I had to undo my upgrade last night because I
was unable to duplicate this functionality.
For some background here is my scenario. Have a pc in the field that if it
sees an alarm state will send out e-mails. Normally it will just send to
me here and all was fine but we needed to add other addresses like pagers,
cell phones remote users in different domains etc. The last thing I want
to to is make my server and open relay. Our config was fine since if
someone wanted relay from my server it would reject it if it was not 1.
ony my internal network or 2. sending mail to any of the domains listed in
the routing table.

Re: Relaying in 5.5 and 2k question

2003-03-06 Thread Jerry J.
Recreating the thread I felt I needed to do to make some things more clear
than what I did earlier. To expand of my scenario, the remote PC is
actually 312 remote PC's. So entering their IP addresses is not really an
option. Suboptimal will do for now as we are in the process of writing
software so that we can just send a single e-mail to our alert mailbox,
then it will look at the alert for type and site, grab the e-mails from a
database and send them out from there. But it seems that we need exchange
2k to write the software. But that part is out of my arena. I am just
trying to get 2k to work as 5.5 does work now.

Re: Relaying in 5.5 and 2k question

2003-03-06 Thread Jerry J.
First of all, thank you for your input. I think that I am getting what I
need taken care of for now. I will agree that sub-optimal is not the way
to go but for the time being it is a satisfactory workaround. More than
half of the legacy systems will not support any kind of authentication to
my mail server. What we are deploying now will. The main problem I am
facing is that this is to be done and now. My boss does not accept that
since it works in 5.5 that it will not work in 2000. Again I am just
looking at this as a workaround until we get our other system completed. I
have never faced as much frustration as I have here. They have deployed
systems that are to run 24/7 and collect data/ monitor interfaces and
these systems are running windows 95. *ugh* I just want to scream
sometimes.
Again thanks for the information. I completely understand whar you are
saying that its stupid to do it half-assed. But for now, I do not have
much of a choice.

Upgrade problem 5.5 2k

2003-03-05 Thread Jerry J.
Ok, upgraded our 5.5 server to 2k. everyone seems to be fine except me.
The problem is that it pointed my user to a different mailbox. This
mailbox is just for daily delivery of data files so no one else is
affected. But, it gave me its e-mail address and alias, everything but the
logon name. The account that I got now has no e-mail address. This I can
fix but how can I get my mailbox back? Or am I screwed? The original 5.5
server got the upgrade so everything should be there but how can I link
back to it?

Mail routing question

2003-03-05 Thread Jerry J.
In 5.5 I was able to lock the system down so that no one could route mail
other than my internal network. But at the same time I was able to have a
computer in another state on a different network connect and send an
e-mail to everyone on our network at all was fine, everyone got the e-mail
from the computer out of state. But as soon as I added an outside address
to the list of our internal addresses the entire message would fail with
relaying restricted. But I was able to add that particular domain as a
always relay list. So at this point if anyone tried to relay and had any
domains listed that were not either my local domain or the one domain
listed it would fail and all was well.
How do I do that on 2k? I am in a real bind here.

Outlook 2k unable to open you default folders

2003-02-12 Thread Jerry J.
This PC had a problem after a power outage. I have gotten it running fine
except for one problem. I get that error when trying to open a mailbox.
Now, I can goto another PC and open this users mailbox no problem so it is
not a problem with the info store. On this PC you can pingthe mail server,
DNS is working correctly and anything else network related is working
fine.
Now, when I go into exchange properties and reenter the users name and
tell it to check name, I get this: THe name could not be resolved. The
microsoft Exchange Address Boook was unable to log on to the Microsoft
Exchange Server computer...
AGain, the server is fine as all other users are working fine and this
user can goto another system and check mail. There is something still
wrong with this system. ITs running 2k pro and I have reinstalled outlook
2k and SP3. Nothing has changed. I have also set the logon network
security to None in hopes that I could force logon credentials to the
server but when I try to open outlook it just goes straight to the above
error again, ignoring the need for authentication.
Anyone have any ideas? This is my VP;s system and reinstall is not really
an option.

Upgrade Q from 5.5 to 2k.

2003-01-17 Thread Jerry J.
This might be very stupid but I cannot find any conclusive reference to
answer my questions. First of all my network: NT 4.0 PDC and BDC then an
NT 4.0 server running exchange 5.5. My plan is to upgrade the PDC then the
BDC to 2k server leaving it in mixed mode leaving me with one non DC nt
4.0 server running exchange 5.5. I then plan to upgrade the OS on the last
server to 2k server. At this point is where I have the questions and am
looking for reference. After the last step do I then run ADC prior to
upgrading to exchange 2k? Does the server running exchange need to be a
DC? Do I need to have a different server with exchange 2k installed before
running ADC? There are no hardware issues with the server running exchange
so I cannot replace it. I have to use just the hardware I have now. My
problem is that I read one thing on MS site and my books from Sybex and
such say slightly different things which could be potentially devastating
if this upgrade goes awry. So if someone can point to some reference and
say this is absolutely what you need to do I would really appreciate it.

I am running exchange 5.5 sp3 on NT 4 sp6a. I would like to know if there
is a way I can log the domains of all incoming mail on the IMS as well as

restrictions and just want to monitor for a few days. Need to make sure

allowing to override. We are trying to implement SSL but having problems

Routing restrictions Exchange 5.5

2002-11-22 Thread Jerry J.
Have an interesting problem. Currently have our exchange server locked
down so that no one can route mail from outside the internal network. Now
we are setting up remote monitoring PC's that are using the internet to
send alerts. But obviously that will not work since they are outside the
internal network. Inputting IP info for each machine is not desired as
there are over 300 machines that will be doing this and their addresses
may change. Looking for a means that these computers can authenticate to
the server. This is something that can be inserted into the code of the
software sending alerts. But I am not seeing a sure fire way to accomplish
this.
So to sum it up, exchange server is locked down so no system outside the
internal network can route mail. Need to find a way that certain systems
that are outside the internal network can route mail thru our server using
some sort or authentication that is hard coded into our software. Or any
other means that anyone can think of.
Thanks

I put the smpt server on the local machine out and the programmers do not

Outlook drops first address in TO: line

Have a user that when he types in more than 2 addresses in the TO: line it
drops the first address. Did a test that had 4 seperate addresses that all
come to me. The first address did disappear and the e-mail never arrived
to that mailbox. This only happens with multiple addresses. If he sends an
e-mail to that first mailbox alone it arrives fine. So not matter what the
first address is, when 3 or more addresses are present the 1st one gets
dropped every time.
Anyone seen this before?
